    I used to FIX wheel aligners so I know how they work and how alignment affects cars. Caster will not, I repeat will not, cause tire wear. It will however cause the car to pull to the lower caster. So your corvette should pull to the left which is perfect because you usually want it to slightly pull to the left to offset the road crown which is used to drain water off the hiway. Your corvette is 100% fine with that lower caster reading. If you could actually see 1 deg of caster you would laugh how little it is. I’m jealous how you are able to identify cars that you can rebuild and get a great car back on the road at a fraction of the cost of new. You rock

      @shrx Před 5 lety +21

      If you notice the chart suggests the manufacturer considers a caster between 8.1 and 6.9 degrees to be acceptable on the left front wheel. That is a span of 1.2 degrees which means they are ok with +/- 0.6 degrees of dead on center. They are saying that the driver would be very unlikely to tell any difference between 8.1 and 6.9.
      The actual recorded measurement after adjustment was 6.8 degrees or 0.1 off of the bottom of the specification range (which is 1.2 degrees wide).
      Alignment systems have to be adjusted and inspected periodically. They are not exact instruments. We don’t know how far off the machine is from perfect nor when it was last calibrated. The expected operator error is even larger (usually) than the machine error.
      Add these up and that is why we have tolerance ranges rather than a specific and exact setting. The car is designed to operate anywhere in the range AND a little bit outside of the range to account for operator and machine measurement error.
      IF the measured 6.8 degrees was exactly right (spoiler: it isn’t) we would very likely be in a range where no human could tell the difference on any surface or driving conditions. Certainly no sports car enthusiast on a regular highway could tell.

    As to the corvette - your camber and toe were within spec (although should be adjusted for more negative camber and zero toe) your caster was out; caster won't affect how well the car tracks; think of it this way - camber is lean of the wheel left to right (X-axis), toe is how straight the wheel is, e.g. turned in or out (Y-axis), those will affect how the car tracks, caster is the angle of the strut front to back (z-axis) and you honestly won't notice it, but if it's a severe issue, it can lead to binding of components, or odd reactions under heavy braking/accelerating (eg. can cause toe or camber to temporarily be unmanageable in these situations.) Caster Camber plates can remedy that, a trip to the corvette forums can get you a good suggestion of where you want camber, toe and caster to be for your driving style; daily - leave it in factory specs or as close to it as possible, spirited - more negative camber, track - everyone is different. Looking at your alignment print out though, it's 0.1 deg out of spec and I wouldn't worry about it.

      You can lie to others, but you shouldn't lie to yourself. Just in case you missed it, it is not "back to factory spec." That the caster is not adjustable in the normal sense does not mean that you should ignore it when it is off by 10%, as it is in this case. As you see at 14:33, the caster on the left front wheel (the corner he repaired) is significantly off (should be 7.0, plus or minus .1), which in this case means that the repair area was not properly aligned when it was welded.
      If you don't know what caster does, it helps to provide tracking stability to the wheel when the car is moving forward. Have you ever had a shopping cart where one of the front wheels shakes back and forth as you push it? That is because the caster angle is off due to a bent frame or bent vertical shaft. For now, the right front wheel will have to provide the stability for both sides, but the additional load will cause uneven wear to the tires, excessive stress/wear to the tie rod ends and steering rack and will make the car inherently less stable at high speeds, when making a hard turn and on wet or snow-covered roads. It's not a death trap at this point, but it is not where it should be either.

      @@georgeford6056 The Audi R8 is BACK to Factory Spec. The car you are talking about is the Corvette. Conflating the two to make it sound like the Audi R8 wasn't returned to factory spec is disingenuous at best. You can't talk about lying with a straight face and pull a stunt like that.

      @@intoTheEther1 Look at 14:26, just freeze the video and read what is at the top of the screen, then let it play and pay attention as it reaches 14:33. Again, the caster does not have a factory installed adjustment because it is permanently fixed by the angle of the attachment points drilled into the unibody frame, the points that were not in alignment when the repair was welded.
      The R8 is not within factory specs and just because the guy making the video (and you) don't understand it does not change that fact. I don't fault him for thinking it is, he is obviously not a master mechanic and does not understand the importance of the caster angle.

    I think there's a lot of confusion and misunderstanding of aligning vehicles let alone a damaged one. In terms of the damage done to your cars, it's pretty easy to make adjustments to get them into factory wheel alignment specs because it's not like the cars were extremely mangled. I think why people really freak out is that you didn't use a frame rack or jig to ensure symmetry on both sides of the car. This may be a cause of why you see a lack of symmetry before you align the wheels, and see a slight difference in caster values after alignment. It's relatively easy to align wheels (especially front) to get them to drive straight, which is predominately toe alignment (this is also the main factor in excessive tire wear besides aggressive negative camber). However, if there is slight asymmetry within the frame alignment, the toe may be adjusted more on one side than the other to get within spec. This as well as the caster differential in the front may not have a huge difference on everyday driving, but it could disrupt steering at angle through a changed ackermann angle, and does change the instantaneous center location of the suspension, impacting suspension travel during compression/rebound. But, I don't think an everyday person doing regular driving could notice these changes, but it is something to be taken into account as to why frame machines are used in the automotive industry to get things back to factory spec. I'm not trying to spread hate or say that you should have done anything different, I just wanted to put some input on the frame alignment vs. wheel alignment conversation.

    • @muskokamike127
      @muskokamike127 Před 5 lety +3

      In my post I said caster out by 1 deg isn't really going to affect anything but the wheels desire to go back to straight after making a turn. Yeah, there will be a slight change in angle when you make a turn but not enough that anyone NOT running GT is going to gaf about or even notice.
      But if you're talking about frame alignment, well, since there is so much mass in the vehicle, temperature will play a part in that as well. If you drive it in Northern Manitoba today, at -28 C and took it in for an alignment, you'd get one reading. Then transport it down to FLA where it's 30 C and you'll get another. Metal grows and shrinks with extreme temps. I mean, look at train rails....Canada's trans Canada rail grows by 150 MILES in the summer. So while the frame won't grow that much, if it grows or shrinks a MM around the engine, and not around the front, then your readings will be off.
      There's a video of a guy in Vegas ( i think) who bought a Demon and it pulled to the right the day he got it. For over a year he tried to have it fixed and finally he got it lemon law'd and they gave him his money back because the Demon cannot be aligned conventionally, the wheels aren't adjustable. The only adjustment is in the front cradle.
      I bring this up because this is a case of where the car wasn't assembled properly at the factory so who the hell knows if ANY vehicle is 100% perfect coming from the factory. Now I would say something like a Chiron or One1 is, but anything else? I dunno about that. Sure they use jigs but after viewing a video of a motorcycle frame being welded in a jig, and seeing one part not properly seated in the jig, and they went ahead anyways, I would question any vehicle being 100%.

      @Joe Knapp Please forgive me for questioning you, but I believe your statement is more like saying a foundation of a house could not be damaged because of roof damage. Car structures are different, when upper components support the lower two. A strut tower/mount/frame could tweak anything below giving the ideal conditions

    • @teymac8127
      @teymac8127 Před 5 lety +2

      Unless it is a severe condition toe doesn’t cause a pull, but it is the fastest tire wearing angle. All things being equal, the vehicle will pull to the side of the lowest caster and highest camber. That’s why you can dial up the camber on the opposite side of the low caster and correct a pull, but camber is a tire wearing angle too so there are limitations.

    Hello from across the pond, for reference I am an engineer and I have a significant amount of experience in Aluminium and the welding / manipulation of its alloys.
    Firstly - We don't know what alloy Audi use but it wont be hard it will be tough, so the alloy will be less prone to cracking after welding along the HAZ. A good thing.
    Secondly - The damaged area that was repaired supported the top of the shock absorber and spring, not the double wishbone suspension which controls the alignment. Warning I have made an assumption re the coil over spring / magnetite spring control specifications and alignment spec.
    Thirdly - From 2 above I think the castor has been affected by the position of the top of the spring / repair, but can be adjusted to the same as the other side by the use of a racing spec adjustment (washers), which you know about.
    Fourthly - Bloody marvellous, thanks for the vids, really enjoy watching them.
    Cheers

    Not an expert here, but I had a similar issue with my 2003 Chevy Cavalier. It was T-boned on the driver side and when they fixed it, they were no longer able to get the front d/s wheel into factory specs, but it was super close, like your Vette’s is. I never had any long term issues with the vehicle, the tires wore evenly and she drove straight and true. Accident happened at 13K miles, I drove her to 397K miles. Would still be driving it today but I got rear-ended pretty badly and the vehicle was pretty destroyed.

No matter how bad the car was damaged, if you follow the factory repair procedure (can be purchased from the spare parts store) to repair the vehicle, it can be 100% aligned and to factory spec. If after a repair you have problems you need only look as far as the repair and compliance with the repair procedure to get the answer. Great videos to pass the time in lockdown.

    Cool to see that the alignment specs are spot on. There is a huge cottage industry for aligning cars with damaged frames and getting them back into spec. Offset bushings for control arms, adjustable control arms and trailing arms, spacers, shims, you name it. You can even get offset ball joints. If it still has four wheels, it can be realigned. As to the 'Vette's caster angle, that will mainly affect return-to-center for the steering wheel. And not much at that. I like the fact that you take cars people deem not worth fixing and fix them for your personal enjoyment.

As the readout said 1 deg in caster is NOTHING. Considering there is 360 deg in a circle, it is out 1/360th....BFD.
      Now if this was a LeMans or F1 car doing high speed runs all day every day? yeah, might be a problem......but on the road? Shit, I bet the first pothole he drives over the alignment will be out.

    Castor on C5-6 and 7 should be less than factory spec anyway, in order to improve corner turn in. Toe in and camber need to be adjusted to the wheel and tire package, not some shit “average”
    specification. In the 70s and 80s I did advanced race car suspension design and development professionally, worked on race cars from SCCA club racers to Formula 5000 pro series with Lola T-332. Keyboard warriors will of course have more knowledge gained in their mommy’s basement, so we better listen to them.

Negative camber helps with contact patch on turning where has positive camber helps with straight line high speed stability. i can not say that i agree with you on castor being less that factory because there is a reason that GM puts that much castor in the car and that being overall balance that they are after. times and cars have changed a lot in the last 30-40 years. when i align any of my own vehicles i take the factory specs look how i drive it and change the specs accordingly. many times I'm increasing the castor to over factory

    • @jenniferwhitewolf3784
      @jenniferwhitewolf3784 Před 5 lety +1

      frozenheart The factory tune to greater caster to increase speed of self straighten when letting go of the wheel.....Based on shitty drivers buying Corvettes to carry golf clubs.🤣🤣. There are drivers of all skill levels that buy and use them, so they tune spec for a safer experience for the less skilled. Less caster will speed the rate of turn-in at a corner, and reduce effort, but it will require more driver input to control the straightening as the corner is passed. I understand why they went for the amount of caster they did.. but drivers with road racing and autocross skills can be more precise and quicker with less.. Its all about the goals.. but in the case of one side being shy, personally I will do as much as possible to make them same side to side. We do all toe and camber aligns at home, but have to rent time on turntables to cal the caster.
