  • ECLIPSE. The most underrated tuner car of all time. Responsible for setting off the US tuner scene and immortalized by The Fast and The Furious franchise, the Eclipse has seen it all. See how it all began with James Pumphrey; as he explains the origins behind the DSM name, the partnership with Chrysler that gave rise to the Eclipse, and it’s influence on car culture as a whole.
“I see a cold air intake, it’s got a NOS fogger system, the T4 turbo Dominic, I see an AIC controller, it has direct port nitrous injection…” “Yeah and a stand alone fuel management system...not a bad way to spend ten thousand dollars”

Ive got a 1991 Mitsubishi eclipse, its been an amazing little car. Ive owned it for about 9 going on 10 years now. It was my first car when I turned 16. I received the Eclipse from my uncle who was just wanting to get rid of it due to the timing being off and was just tired to dealing with it sooo.. i got it.. lol Thing was sitting under a tree covered in bird crap and was just a sad little car.. LOL I knew nothing about DSMs at the time. Long story short. He helped me get her running once i got the brand new timing parts and the rest is history. Grandfather (R.I.P) who was on his death bed gave me his remaining money to help me buy the new parts.. So you can imagine the attachment to this car. Restored the whole car from top to bottom with custom paint and body work. Looked like it came right off the show room floor. Sadly how ever.. i wrecked it back in October of 2016 due to a truck not having tail lights... Sad day.. but all was not lost! Got a new core support and put her back together once again and is now on the roads once more. Just gotta save up the money to get her painted again. Awesome vid. Made me even more proud of my DSM!

I owned a 1991 Eagle Talon TSI AWD 5 speed manual, the engine and boost with a BIG 16G Turbo was AMAZING! Especially with my full 3" exhaust and hollowed cat!
God damn, I wish I had looked into the car before I bought it though, the first owner literally blew the shit out of it! When I got her, there was a HOLE in the stock 14B Turbo! The camshaft had skipped 2 or 3 teeth and I had to get a top end rebuild - at least I got 1mm Oversized Valves, Titanium Valve springs - and the accompanying upgrades to the valve covers.
My Mechanic was AMAZING! And he was VERY cheap! I bought my Turbo for ~$700, he only charged me about $500 to install - AND TUNE MY ECU for a better fuel map (he already had the ECU flash ready, as he owned 6 of the DSM Turbo Trio himself!) He also ran BIG 16G Turbos (EVO 3 stock turbo) on 3 of his own cars - so he knew it all so well.
Anyway, eventually after draining my savings on things like a new Alternator, Steering Pump, Fuel Pump - and much more - the Head Gasket blew and cracked one of the cooling jackets a little - not enough to leak a lot immediately, but enough that it WOULD have failed, and I did not have the $5500 or more it would have cost - about $4000 or more was in parts alone...
So I HAD to sell her off on eBay as a Parts Car, I only got $3000 for it - and I sunk basically $10,000 into it.
See I thought I was safe because it was low-ish miles when I bought it at just below 60,000....
God I wish I still had that car, I was EASILY putting down about ~300+ HP with 93 Octane and 25 PSI of boost! When she ran as she was supposed to, she was the MOST FUN I HAVE EVER HAD IN ANY CAR! And I have driven a LOT (worked at an Auto Auction, and had friends with fast cars!)

They want one vehicle that can do it all and don't care if it drives like crap.... hence the return of the station wagon with a new name and a slight lift to kinda hint at enhanced capabilities and automakers falling all over themselves to besmirch classic nameplates like Eclipse, Mustang, and Blazer to make little shitboxes that suck all the soul and fun from driving only to replace it with Bluetooth connectivity and smartphone integration. The popularity of Crossovers is mainly due to the fact that automakers know they can still cash in on crappy designs because everyone still thinks they'll have to haul some mythical and mysterious STUFF in the back of their vehicle so they want more cargo room, folks believe that someday they'll hit the Appalachian trail or they'll just have to go somewhere in the snow so they want All Wheel Drive, and you better believe you just have to have world beating efficiency for that cross country trip you'll never take cause gas stations is scarce in death valley, but wait there's more Dude you gotta have your Apple Auto and Android Car play compatibility to get your crappy trap beat mumble rap tunes everywhere you go so we added Bluetooth, usb, and aux to your car.

+1 for most underrated tuning car of all time. People love to shit on the 4th gens because no AWD nor 4G63, but keep in mind the V6 of that generation was by far the most powerful iteration. While you can't tune it quite as well as a turbo, it still responds very well to bolt-ons and reflashes. My own is putting down 280whp on simple bolt-ons and a 94 octane map. Not bad for a car that you can buy and build for less than 10k

No hate, just facts... helped my friend tune his 4th Gen GT and had a bitch of a time finding bolt ons that wasn't megan racing crap or from RIP. Theres more to a car than raw performance like every no car bitch ass kid wants to comment about on youtube. Drive and enjoy what works for you!

Rawdawgggg actually not true.. they can make 400hp naturally aspirated which is pretty cool considering this car doesn't have too much of a cult following like the 4G63 or 420A variants.. and yes, I mean, it isn't as good as the other things in the market, but I think it can be made to handle pretty well for it's size.. RRE Motorsports made a turbo one back in 08 and there's even a video of it on track racing at Willow Springs Raceway..

      @manfromnantucket9544 Před 6 lety +2

Rawdawgggg Sure it may be a bit heavy and has a poor weight distribution, but it sure as hell isn't what most people would call slow. The aftermarket isn't up to Honda standards but the dedicated builders have good options with RRE and RIPP stuff.
Check out my channel if you want to see what a good example at least sounds like

It's sad but true, a lot of people think every DSM was turbo all wheel drive, but only 5 % of total production was the GSX and TSi AWD , so they were pretty rare off the bat , even new. The Turbo All Wheel Drive versions have a high visibility factor in comparison to there numbers because all the DSMs people see on CZcams or Facebook are the Turbo All Wheel Drive versions, it seems like 80 % of those models ended up as drag cars or street racing lol, I've owned a 95 Tsi awd since new .

They don't care any more. The car section of their company is small compared to so many others. So instead they release whatever the average everyday A-to-B driver wants, and those people don't want much. Same reason the manual is dying.

My buddies dad worked and retired from that plant-not 50min away, and still pains me when I see the new eclipse🤦🏼‍♂️. Times have changed though: 4 door Chargers, Mustangs, and a long list to follow.. I am just super glad to remember watching the entire transition in my own backyard and never knowing what was going on. My kids will replay my rants and stories of “the good old days” of car culture. But you can’t help but wonder what our next generation will bring and I personally am looking forward to the “look what I did to this car” type stories. As long as tools and knowledge flows our generations will make it their own!

Back in the mid 90's, I had a '91 Eagle Talon GST - it was my first fast car. 190 HP - what's not to love? It didn't take long for the turbo lag to get old (it wasn't modded). I swore I'd never again buy a turbo car, but that only lasted until I bought a new Gen 1 Speed 3. No turbo lag or not enough to be annoying! The lust for power carried over to the next (current) car - a '16 Golf R. At first it felt slower than the Speed 3 but a solution was quickly discovered - tuning! The R now sports nearly 400 HP and 409 FT LBs of torque. My lust for lag-free power has been satisfied (4 1/2 years into the ownership of this car) and I'm hoping it will last me the rest of my life as I am well into my senior years.
