      I'm always so sad when he has opportunities to review the UNREAL oe sound systems he's lucky enough to encounter.
      Merc's Bermester, Ford GT's Mcintosh, and especially Pagani's Sonus Faber... All missed opportunities to satisfy us curious audiophiles.

    • @falkenlaser
      @falkenlaser Před 4 lety +8

      ELEVATEOFFROAD.COM I’d think Doug would at least show Audi’s and Aston Martin’s Bang and Olufsen’s tweeters pop out of the dashboard, as those are quite a quirk even for a non-audio guy.
      But a lot of those premium sound systems made by super high-end brands like Bermester in M-B, Bang and Olufsen in Audi et. al., and Meridian in Jaguar and Land Rover aren’t entirely made by those brands, as a single pair of entry-level speakers from many of those brands would cost the same or more than the cost of the entire sound system option (e.g. Meridian’s entry level speaker is a $3000 boom box, which is more than the Meridian option). So they’re not at the same level of quality of speakers those brands make, and a high-end aftermarket system (such as my Hertz Mille Legends powered by a JL Audio Slash 300/4v3 amp) would blow most away. The one exception I could see would be Sonus Faber in the Paganini since that’s an extreme limited production care and everything about it is perfect.

    Doug, this car is AWD, has a t3/t4 turbo, deep cuts in the seats to hold you in place, a large vertical shifter, a dashboard designed for a guage cluster, and a wheel that isn't cluttered with unneeded buttons. The 4G63T motor came with a butterfly valve system for pulling in more air at higher speeds. It came running like 14 second quarter mile times, 195 horse power, doing over 120mph from the factory. The GSX is a great racecar platform on a budget. That's what it's best for. I loved mine.
    PS: I've seen these with sub 8 second quarter mile times. I was building a road racing car when I sold mine and the person who bought it was stripping it to the metal and making it into a drag car.

    • @WilliamTM
      @WilliamTM Před 6 lety +7

      To be fair to modern cars, they do have much better sounding stereos nowadays. I've been in loads of friend's cars from the last 5 or so years, even budget ones, and they all sound great. Compare that to older/cheaper cars from 10+ years ago and they were a lot lot worse so an EQ would actually help with improving audio quality, in some cases.
      Plus...I can still change it anyway, it's just moved to my phone rather than the car.

    A couple of things to note. The sliders on the stereo are collectively called a graphic equalizer and a lot of '80s stereos had them. Going further back, lots of people would install custom stereos with an extra power amp that had one of these equalizers built in. Manufacturers just started adding them to the OEM head units due to their popularity. Also, on the power locks with these Japanese cars, you could unlock the driver door from the passenger side using the key (and vice versa IIRC). You simply turned the key twice in the unlock direction and it unlocked the other side (and the back doors if it was a 4-door). I think they were trying to figure out a way to have some of the functionality of keyless entry without using a transmitter fob, a thing that I miss every time I have to pull the big honking key fob from my pocket when I want to drive my car. I hate the bulky newer keys and key fobs taking up all that space in my pocket. Hopefully this gets remedied at some point and they finally miniaturize this stuff.

    The best part about these cars was that you could add almost 100 hp with exhaust, boost controler, and good gas. I had a 92 TSI AWD for many years and loved it - rarely did someone know what it was when they were new. And it was actually reliable if you tuned it carefully (monitoring knock etc.), didn't push beyond safe limits.. kept good oil/gas and didn't beat up the transmission with fast shifting.

    I owned a black on silver Eagle Talon TSI just like in the brief photo you popped up. The reason you felt the vague on center steering is because your test car didn't have the larger wheel and sporty tire package. I absolutely loved this car. It's slow by today's standard, but so is a BMW e30 (which I currently drive). In its day it was quick, giving Mustang 5.0 GTs a run for their money. And when the roads got slippery, it was game over for just about anything else. The AWD system worked flawlessly with nice rear wheel bias. I could go on, but thanks for bringing back the memories!

      +Will Serrano it was because CD players were just becoming widely available, but were still expensive. Many people's only CD player was a discman or similar. You hooked it up to your home stereo with a minijack->RCA plug then brought it to your car. While having a front facing jack was rare, tons of cars back then did have an "aux" setting that went to two RCA ports on the back of the head unit, and then the dealer or other installer would run the cable to the glovebox or something. I think a lot of JDM cars actually had the front minijack very early, due to the popularity of MiniDisc long before MP3 players and later smartphones were a thing, though it is strange to see it in the US designed and built eclipse, maybe that premium head unit was used in actual Japanese Mitsubishis as well.
      Edit: it also makes sense in a higher end car stereo because those tape adapters sounded terrible, and someone shelling out for it at the time probably has a portable CD player and would want it to sound good

The sun roof leaked like a mofo and the valve cover gasket had to be changed every 6 months but the ample hatch space allowed for me to have a killer sound system and it hardly ever broke. The girls really loved it too! I owned a brand new '90 Eagle Talon Tsi, the equivalent of the Eclipse GS (both turbo, FWD). I still think of it as one of the most fun cars I've owned, and I loved the styling, performance and value. Only issues were torque steer, which the AWD version (GSX or Tsi AWD) cured, and warping front rotors. It was also the fastest car I've driven, as in 120 on the interstate. I wish I still had it and one actually just sold on Bring a Trailer for about $18K, but I realized it was just trying to take 30 years off my age, which it couldn't do, so I didn't bid. I owned a 1991 Mits Eclipse GS dark blue turbo which I bought used in 1993. I remember test driving it and was impressed with how fast it was. I ended up installing Borbet rims, tinted the windows, and replaced the airbox with an HKS intake for an added15 HP and 5 more pounds of boost. With very little work the car was a quick sleeper and I was even able to beat the local 5.0 Mustangs in my neighborhood. I found the handling to be very good and overall the car was very reliable. I ended up selling it after 8 years and 90k on it. During that time I only replaced the front brakes and put a couple of sets of tires on it.

    I had this exact car, in white too and 5 speed too! Mine had a beefed up twin turbo. It was such a fun, fast little car. I loved it so much. I used to fly everywhere in that car. It just wanted to go and was so fun to drive, so it was impossible to drive slow lol. It was so small that you could just dip in and out of traffic. Perfect car to whip through the city (Boston) and parking was great because it fit in small spots. It was definitely one of my favorite cars ive owned. This brought me back to some great memories

    LOL, it's called a coin tray! Way back in 1990 we used to pay tolls with actual coinage. It went sorta like this; you would pull up to a toll gate, reach into the change tray, remove the required coins and toss them into a (what looked like) a giant urinal, the coins would clink and clatter to the bottom then the gate would raise to let you pass. A very handy tray to have, especially in cities like Chicago.

  • @ErikHendershot

    Man Doug, for knowing so much about cars, there are a lot of common features that you apparently don't know about...
    -The "second high beams" in the light bar are not a separate light. It is just the regular high beams turning on while your flip up lights are still down.
    -The sun roof was actually a moon roof since it was see-through glass. You also didn't have to remove it to get the outside air. The handle where you released it can flip forward and latch up, holding it open at an angle.
    -Stereo sliders are an EQ. Each number is a different frequency that you are adjusting independently. Most stock stereos now adjust the bass, mid, and high on a bell curve and don't allow for independent frequency adjustment.
    -I've seen various newer cars that still have cruise control on stalks. It is not uncommon.
    -The pocket to "hide stuff from cops" is the exact opposite of that. It is where you store your vehicle registration and insurance paperwork.
    -The dome light actually DOES make sense and functions EXACTLY like every other one in existence. You have 3 positions: On, Door, and Off. On would latch it to be used at any point and would keep it on pretty much until the battery of the car dies. The one with the dot is the Door option. Having it down allows the dome light to come on only when the doors are open. When they close, the lights go off.
    -The cartoonish drawings in the owners manual are quite common in many Japanese manuals of the 80's and 90's; this would include vehicles and electronics.

      I know this is old but I had to comment on this. I stopped watching at the EQ part. The headlight comment and the note about a convertible solving the “sunroof” issues had already irritated me. I owned a 97 and it had a POWER MOONROOF! The glass slide above the roof... not a convertible.
      I understand it has to be very tough to put a video together on the fly, make it interesting and get everything 100% right but my God man... this entire video is flawed. It’s a shame because I really liked this generation of Eclipse in its time and was looking forward to a knowledgeable review.
