"Yo, death is awesome!"
~Vinny 2017.
What I like about the Genesis sound chip is that it sounds like an arcade.
Because it's an FM chip. The Sega Genesis uses the YM2612 chip and despite that the chip is a downgraded version of the YM2151 used in many arcade boards, that doesn't stop composers to being creative for the lil beast.
And while Castlevania Bloodlines didn't use the fullest potential of the YM2612, Michiru Yamane's still manage to compose the most quality Castlevania soundtrack for that chip and the console itself.
So Vinny asked what the hardest Castlevania game is, it has to be Haunted House, the arcade version of the original game. It doesn't have the Castlevania name on it but it's blatantly a redo of the first game (Which they did several times).
One credit gets you 1 life and 3 continues, there's no way to get more continues, you can dump 99 credits worth of money in it and you'll still have to restart the game after 3 continues.
There's also no healing items, the only way to heal is to burn a continue for a bars worth of health. So it's complete the game in 3 continues or 1 life and 3 heals.
Enemies hit like a truck, at normal difficulty a skeleton can take half your health, it only goes down to about a third if you set the cabinet to be the easiest it can be.
Basically the game is absolute cheap bullshit designed to get as much money as possible out of you with next to no chance of actually completing it with out stupid amounts of practice. Most other arcade games at least give you an option to get more lives so you can at least complete the game, Haunted House gives you nothing but despair and suffering.
old comment but you couldnt get more lives with more credits? like 99 lives or smth?
Hatunted house, Bloodlines and Order of Ecclesia. We got a top.
@@mikotoh nope, they said "fuck money, this needs to be the hardest game ever made!"
Haunted Castle, not Haunted House lol. Terrible game, but it's got a killer soundtrack.
"this is a fairly short game when you save state the fuck out of it"
that Stage 4 gear robot boss feels so out-of-place but yet super cool at the same time
The only game in the Castlevania series I ever owned and had the chance to play. Good fucking game.
37:14 One of the best music in the series!
This. So much this.
I was hoping it was gonna be this track before I clicked the timestamp lmao
J O H N M O R T I S
For the love of fuck, someone tell Vinny to play Streets of Rage. Godly music!
Or Thunder Force 4. Or Gunstar Heroes. Or any Treasure game, really.
Edit: Phantasy Star 4's music is also incredible, and I still find myself listening to the OSTs of the Genesis Shining Force games, as well. Also, although not as well known, I won't hesitate to tell anyone who have doubts about Genesis soundchip to listen to the Devilish soundtrack. It's just awesome.
Maybe then he'll stop talking shit and move on from the fanboy wars of the 90's
If you have the time to hear some more FM synthesis goodness, you should also listen to some PC88/PC98 music. The sound hardware is very similar to the Genesis, and some amazing music tracks were composed on it (such as YU-NO's soundtrack).
Rocket Knight Adventures, that OST...
Rocket Knight Adventures is actually my favorite Genesis game, so good! Great music as well. There's so many awesome OST's on Genesis. Splatterhouse 2 & 3, Sonic main series, Contra Hard Corps, Castlevania Bloodlines, Streets of Rage series, Shinobi series, Phantasy Star series, Ristar, Tiny Toon Adventures: Buster's Hidden Treasure...the list goes on & on!
I wouldn't mind a re-stream of this game at some point in the future, perhaps with a patch to remove the continue limit?
just feels like Vinny legitimately wasn't really enjoying playing this one
honestly i play with the 9 lives cheat whenever i play this on expert, i can get through on normal with 2 continues, but i still fucking hate limited continues in any format
I really wish this game would get some sort of re-release. Yes I have an old Genesis cartridge, but this game deserves to his Virtual Console and XBLA and stuff.
Konami's exclusive Genesis/Sega CD line-up: Contra Hard Corps, Rocket Knight Adventures, Double Dribble Tournament Edition, TMNT: Hyperstone Heist, Castlevania: BLoodlines and SNATCHER. There were other Konami games but man, that was a good time of high quality hits for Genesis/Sega CD.
Coming Back to see this game once again is Good
I watched a bit of this, stopped, and later came back at 46:41 to hear Vinny say "Hah, pulls out penis: it does maximum damage!" On any other channel, I would have been confused, but on Vinesauce, I accept it as normal.
the spikes on the helmets for german WW1 soldiers was only a thing in the beginn of the war... they fairly quickly adopted better helmets in the later stages of war....
I've been watching a lot of Vinny's streams on here lately so I'll be making log of my ent throughout. Definitely my favorite Castlevania game In the series.
This is awesome. I didn't know there was a Genesis Castlevania.
this was my first Castlevania game. fantastic place to start I think.
The best one. And the music is goated.
Vinny wasn’t lying. The hosts of Club Mario really were named Tommy Treehugger and Co MC.
To give Vinny a history lesson:
So I've been around a lot of remixers who do soundfont retakes of countless series, and I recall a conversation where it was said that the Genesis's soundchip was rather hard to work with but was amazing once you could pull it off. The reason for Genesis not having a supposed "good sound card" was because 1) the programming required math and calculations to pitch and compose correctly for, and knowing back in the day, not a lot of people had the patience to understand to program for it, and 2) the Yamaha sound chip it used was made for metal and techno geared soundtracks, unlike the heavy synth and hard rock geared SNES.
We love ya Vinny, but sometimes you just make us want to punch you in the face. Just saying.
First time I've seen this game being played, it's awesome!
If you want awesome Genesis music and game play, gotta check out Jewel Master. It's like a cross between Castlevania and Megaman.
best castlevania for me!
Holy fuck.
Castlevania: B L O R P L I N E S
dracula looks like crenando if he was a vampire
'too many jonathans in dracula lore' ill say
I love this comment because of your profile picture. It's not actually Johnathan, but hey it's his grandfather so close enough.
Oh my God, I have at least one childhood memory of Club Mario. I've been wondering for years what the hell that was all about, kept thinking I had imagined it.
Club Mario looks like it was invented in Eric Andre’s head
i think you got a bad rom vinyot cause that 'lightning' wasn't there for me, nor the other crunchy noises
also wtf i never noticed the pillar in the face fight
i thought they were turning invisible and you could only hit em then
I hope Vinny plays the PC engine version of Rondo of Blood, that's the good shit.
There isn't really any need for translating. The PSP version is kind of bad, so I rather he play the PC Engine version.
You're the only person I've ever seen diss the PSP remake of Rondo and I sincerely applaud you for having actual taste
It's graphically kind of ugly compared to classic Rondo, and the overall colors in the remake are so dull and kind of drab compared to the classic. The remixed music is also generally not as good. You could argue character designs were improved but that's such a small aspect. The story in Rondo also barely matters and you can understand it without knowing the language characters speak, and except for Dracula the dub actors for Rondo (and by extension the replacements for that port of Symphony) are garbage generic anime tier voices.
Did I say anything about "authentic Japanese experience" or are you trying to devalue my argument by putting words in my mouth?
Anyway, getting a save file for the PSP version would be so much more of a hassle than just setting up a PC Engine emulator. If he went the PSP route he'd probably give up and play the remake instead. Better to avoid the headache.
I never had much trouble with PC-Engine emulation, just need the right files. If I recall the emulation quality of remake Rondo's port of classic Rondo isn't very great, but perhaps it's changed.
Binyot, please play Rocket Knight Adventures (not Sparkster), it's probably Konami's best Genesis game.
1:28:12 SourPls
The Club Mario is so bad, you get to hear a cat dying in the background.
Dude, please play Portrait of Ruin. I would love that!
You can trust Vinny for all Knowledge related to Italians whether it be how wobbly the leaning tower of pizza is to how sweaty the average taint is (only Italian taints)
He didn’t even go up and down the stairs
Aria of sorrow is my favorite from the series but this comes second
Do you guys also snort blood lines?
yo anyone else get fucking shreked by that fucking plant level? the one with the blood pools with never ending red skeletons? and the fucking reverse flowers and swinging tree guys? fuck me that part always always makes me quit.
Club Mario is like something out of a nightmare.
thanks for uploading not joel
Lord Squid What do you mean?
There was a lot of joking about Vin being Joel, or "another Joel", because a bunch of people flocked to this stream when his internet went down.
Lord Squid YAHHHH
Wasn't his internet, he overloaded his PC with Doom mods.
KaedeLanyo Thank you for telling me
Gotta agree that the level 6 of this game is insanity. Without save states, holy shit!
i've beaten it before. once you've gotten used to the game, keep an eye on john/eric's feet and know how to beat the boss rush without taking a single hit, stage 5 is honestly harder/more bullshit
if you can get to dracula, just grind points for a life with the moneybag if you got no lives or continues left, likewise you can grind the special upgrade by heading up/down the stairs
also ducking near medusa seems to let you dodge her attacks, except the tail/ram attack
the other bosses aren't so bad if you have the special move with an axe for backup and bathory is easy as the wizard in the second level, just don't let her fake you out
and if you die to death after taking his cards, unless you continue, he will not resummon them
oh and as for the distorted hallway, you won't get knocked back in midair for some reason, so if you're gonna get hit and don't know where to aim, jump straight up
the rest shouldn't be so bad really
idk why i posted this in reverse order of the level but i don't feel like switching it around
Oh cool Vinny is playing a MegaDrive game! ... then repeatedly shits on the MegaDrive. Oh... My heart.
Really though, Contra: Hard Corps was probably a better example of what Konami could do with a sequel to their existing IPs than Bloodlines. And some really cool music to boot. Damn hard game though.
Su Bu Sword of Vermilion was a classic title for me back then
Japanese version was far more forgiving.
Yeah it was an odd decision to remove the health.
Japanese version is easier.
@@subu9552 its not THAT odd, the other contra games were all 1-hit-death games, its just that + the lack of infinite continues is really overly harsh
*Binyot* you should try *corrupting* Turok
vinny would really like the lecarde chronicles 2
So what happens if you beat expert mode?
RONDO OF BLOOD WHEN?
Please play symphony of the night. (Again)
I mainly agree with Vinny, but before buying BF2, consider purchasing the origional Battlefront 2 and playing its newly reactivated multiplayer. That way you get a similar experience for a fraction of cost and make a good statement to EA.
2005 Battlefront II still holds up today, in my opinion. I was playing it just today with some player-made maps and I had a lot of fun against bots, especially on XL and Uber maps with loads of bots.
The PC controls are fucking garbage though, 17 buttons to move my character and no native controller port. No wonder it sold better on consoles.
25:12 Solid Snake and Raiden what are you doing? You're in the wrong Konami game!
Look at that beautiful slowdown. Blast processing is great.
The spinning tower effect at 35mins looks amazing, easily on par with SNES stuff, they did a really good job on this game.
John Doe The Mega Drive/Genesis was capable of doing everything the SNES could do as it was more powerful, the SNES only really beat it on the soundchip and being easier to create the effects.
The difference was it had to be done in software so Devs didn't take as much advantage of those kind of effects. The SNES had them built right in to hardware so it was much easier for Devs to use them, that's why you saw them more in SNES games.
The misconception that those kind of things couldn't be done on the Mega Drive/Genesis came from what was essentially a smear campaign run by Nintendo that was filled with incorrect info and misrepresented stats made to look like the SNES was better in every way when it was only better in a few things.
Sega completely misrepresented what Blast Processing actually was though so they were both guilty of lies.
This was a really nice stream. I joked about it in chat, but i really do hope Vinny plays Portrait of Ruins in the near future, it's such a good game.
I generally just love the platformer and metroidvania streams, they end up so good for some reason. Though i am fairly biased, since they're some of my favorite genres.
My other favorites would be like... RPGs of various kinds, Fighting Games, and Souls-likes. I got freaking old man tastes, probably since my parents used to be fairly big gamers. I still play fighting games with my dad to this day, though much more rarely. I'd say i'm better than him now thanks to training more, but he's so used to playing against me, that he still manages to win a lot.
There isn't a SNES game in existence with music comparable to Sonic 3. The best SNES soundtrack is Thunder Spirits...which is a port of the Genesis game Thunder Force 3. The genesis sound chip is only limited by the skill of the musician and developer...like all FM synthesis. Where the SNES really shines, soundwise, is in the SFX department. There is no FM synthesis that is good for decent sound effects.
You should play gunstar heroes
Genesis audio gets a bad rap because of how bleh the tools floating around at the time were. It seems like a lot of composers relied on using presets from GEMS (a program made to aid composers in programming the music), and thus robbing themselves of the freedom that comes with designing your own instruments. From a purely objective standpoint, I think Genesis audio is actually quite flexible! You can hear this by listening to practically any OST for the Genesis written by Yuzo Koshiro.
Michiru's compositions for this game are pretty solid to me, but the sound effects are EXTREMELY lacking, and even grating to listen to at times.
Any of Noriyuki Iwadare's music on the Genesis is fantastic as well.
Are the CZcams streams really killed though? They still happen (sort of), I've been able to watch the last six streams in full on here, just gotta get to the stream quick on the YT app
Kholdstare77 You mean to tell me that you can still watch the streams on YT if you're quick enough to catch it before Vinny removes it?
AzureBeats yes
Huh? How is that possible? I know it's possible to watch an archive unlisted stream if you use the notification.
1:18:51 What would that look like in first person? Like your feet would appear to be a foot behind the rest of your body? Like those angles that appear acute but function as obtuse in R'yleh, except it's your body instead of architecture?
Oh, i'm still alive everyone....Oh never mind :)
-Vinny-
32:07
Well now Vinny. I wouldn't say the Genesis soundchip is "limited", just take a listen to what Strobeflux does to the Genesis in Titan Overdrive 2 czcams.com/video/gWVmPtr9O0g/video.html
There are plenty of games with amazing soundtracks on the Genesis.
But I'm sure Vinny is just used to the sample based sounds coming from the SNES compared to the FM synth sounds from the Genesis.
Overdrive 2 is a bit of a bad point to compare with, since it heavily relies on PCM samples instead of actual FM instruments. If you want a good example of Mega Drive/Genesis music, listen to any soundtracks that Hitoshi Sakimoto (Devilish, Gauntlet IV, Verytex), Motoi Sakuraba (Granada, El Viento), Yuzo Koshiro (Streets of Rage series), Kazuo Hanzawa (Gunstar Heroes, Alien Soldier), and Toshiharu Yamanishi (Thunder Force series, Elemental Master) worked on. Of course there's a crap ton more out there, but those are some of my favorites.
Whoa look i'm still alive everyone ok never mind! XD
odd.. some sites say the steel helmets are of WW2, but on wikipedia, it says that the Pickelhaube was discontinued and replaced by it during WW1 in 1916, which would make the game very accurate, since the plot of the game takes place in 1917.
maybe someone can confirm this, all I did is a small search on it.
This isn't hard, Genesis contra is c:
The BBC and actual Casino sites have covered the Battlefront 2 controversy which is pretty big for the view of loot boxes. Not to mention Need for Speed itself tells the player to "play the odds". Its pathetic of EA.
People are suddenly mad at EA for this Battlefield 2 mishap, but I’ve been dealing with their shit for years playing Sims. It cost $20 to send your freaking sim to college.
wait, this game got remake on wii?
Itachi Uchiha Virtual Console, not remake
ooh, thanks for the info
nah but castlevania the adventure did
The guy on the left in the Club Mario stuff is very Bob and Doug.
He’s like the show’s token hoser.
Castlevania: Bloodcurdling (sound effects)
I grew up with a genesis and I still agree that the sounds are kind of jarring.
The Japanese Mega Drive version, called Vampire Killer, is easier that the US/EU versions.
Wow, the furthest I ever got with this game was the first room of the final castle where the visuals get all fucked up. I just couldn't get past that part as a kid and never finished the game. I never realized how much fucking worse it got. That boss rush at the end was bullshit.
the final boss looks like shaft...
this may be “hard”, but its easier than castlevania 4
Uh no, Castlevania 4 is a piece of cake compared to this
Genesis does what nintendon't this Castlevania game is so good.
Super Castlevania IV says hello.
Dracula X < Super CV IV < Bloodlines < Rondo of Blood
lol, nope.
My opinion with EA and those that want the game is this:
Hold off on it. The game isn’t going anywhere.
EA is most likely gonna cave to pressure and change hero unlocks, and if you get it later it’ll most likely be on sale.
That way you get your game cheaper and BS free!
If you want some great games with awesome music on the Genesis, try the Thunderforce series or The Adventures of Batman and Robin. Castilevania is a bit weak audio-wise compared to those.
The Genesis soundchip sounds like the MSDOS soundchip
MS Dos doesn't have a sound chip.
Finally, someone plays the good CV of this generation.
5:47 most accurate synopsis of the genesis i've ever heard
So basically:
Joel dies and vinny takes has place to stop silva- I MEAN Dracula
Everyone complains and shit talks the Genesis soundchip when it has some of the best music on the system...
The ONLY, if I had to guess. Oof..
Feelin' DanDy I haven't heard people shit talk the soundchip much at all actually...
Wasnt the genesis soundchip the most powerful at the time?
I mainly just have a problem with the sound effects in Genesis games since they sound like hot garbage. Music on the other hand I fairly enjoy
The thing is, the Genesis soundchip is incredibly bad compared to actual instrument samples. Yeah, the samples used in SNES games are lower quality to fit on a cartridge and sound a bit muffled because of that, but the range of sound due to samples results in SNES having the best video game music of any 16-bit system. Strings actually sound like Strings, distorted guitars actually sound like distorted guitars, brass trumpets actually sound like brass trumpets (and not a choir of farts), etc.
HOWEVER, the Genesis, when in the right hands (usually Japanese composers and devs), can sound absolutely incredible and can reach the quality of SNES music, though very rare. The majority of bad Genesis music and sound come from US devs who didn't know or didn't want to learn how to use the Y2162 chip.
H
Vinny does not know shit about Genesis games, there are tons of other game equally as good as bloodlines like Shinobi 3.
Plus Dynamite Headdy. One of the best ability swapping games outside of a Kirby that can put some hair on your chest for conquering its insane difficultly. =Y
So lemme get this straight, I play a Genesis game, compliment Genesis games, and say there are many more I am unaware of, but this isn't good enough. Should I copulate with a Genesis next time?
Yes.
I don't know why Vinny's anti-Sega bullshit annoys me so much.
J S he's just VERY misinformed
I don't hate Sega... Skies of Arcadia is one of my top games of all time. They make some good shit. That said, I didn't grow up with one and it has a less powerful soundchip than the SNES. Would it be better if I never streamed any Genesis games? Clearly, I'm trying to branch out here and make peace... not good enough?
vinesauce My fault, i didn't mean to put it that way I'm glad your actually putting the time to genesis/mega drive games when no other person in the time and day would, i apologize if i came as sounding rude i meant no disrespect at all, i meant to elaborate on was about that not every sega genesis games music sounded terrible.
Maybe I've came off at the wrong track there and i completely understand you was kidding around and my comment was the fact i was just joking around as well as I'm sure you wasn't serious about that and knew that it isn't true.
Again i would like to say sorry if my comment came off jerkish and wasn't expected to take it seriously at you or anyone who agrees or disagrees :-)
I'm actually more happy that you and Joel took the time out of your day to stream and showcase MS-DOS games and kinda give it some exposure unlike most let's players or streamers in general and i deeply enjoy that!
This playthrough/commentary hurts.
he seems to be pretty hard on discovery yet by his own admission it seems to be much better than any other first season of any other star strek series by far. if it has such a superior start then where might it end up? he viewing the other series through the lens of having seen the whole seasons. but he ADMITS that most of them have trash first seasons. but this one doesnt. and he mentions not learning more about the crew buuuut. how much did you learn about the crews of the other ships in a half season? and the more actiony elements. its a prequel perhaps that an actual element of the story and not an attempt to dumb something down. hes mentioned before that the klingons were brought about during the cold war as a metaphor. well, i dont if he hes looked around the country lately but perhaps we need something else to fight dont you think?
When you buy into games that deal with this lootbox, microtransaction crap you are actively feeding into the destruction of gaming. I'm not saying do or don't purchase these games, because I have no right to tell anyone what to do, but you do need to at least recognize what you are doing by telling them you'll give them money no matter what they do.
It's gambling so to say. Worst of all, it's gambling on a form of entertainment that has no need to even need to do that. If I wanted to gamble I'd head out to Las Vegas.
Using save states? FAIL
It's not a hardcore playthrough.
the soudns in this game are rather horrendous.
good lord the sound effects are so shit. i agree with vinny. i never did like the genesis soundchip. even games with great soundtracks on the genesis suffered from the chip. and of course there a quite a few games with excellent soundtracks on the genesis. no one said or says otherwise but the chip does them a disservice. and i get being nostalgic for it. i hate it still and even i have a bit of nostalgia for it. but snes sound SO much better. i dont know if its because it came out later or its concessions sega had to make for grawpiks but it is what it is.
DSP impression @33:39
The game looks fun but the sound effects are so fucking garbage.
Not so much the quality but the sounds themselves are unfitting for what makes them.
In this stream: Vinny savestate abuses as much me, and shit talks the Mega Drive some more
(Guess he'll never let it go, not even when Streets of Rage shuts his mouth with a zipper)
Like, seriously. It was fun, but also like a micro SF Zero stream, want proof?
Brace yourself, tighten your ass. Here's some outrageous claims
"They're thing so hard to make the Genesis sound good" and
"Now this sounds good. You can make the Genesis sound good",
at least Vinny has enough spine to admit his miles-noticeable bias
I'll never understand why people give the Genesis so much shit while fetishizing NES audio.
NES audio sucks, but me stating a fact about the limited Mega Drive sound chip has apparently been seen as a declaration of war. Extremely grown up. I shit on SNES and NES games all the time, so yes, I'm going to do that with Genesis too when I play the games. I'd like to play more of them in the future as well and catch up on the games I missed out on. Something tells me if I have even a minute problem with the game or Genesis though people will get salty. That's a shame.
I'm not at all bothered by people liking or disliking a certain thing, I just find the specific phenomenon amusing. Megadrive audio gets a lot of flack generally, meanwhile you can't take one step without bumping into indie chiptune. If anything, you were being too easy on some of this game's more baffling sound effects, like the looping potbreak.wav when that golemn boss died. And _especially_ that wolf, the one that sounded like a broken radial arm saw. If you think people will hate you for not enjoying [video game] then shit, that's their loss.
Ya know what? I thought this game was pure bullshit until this stream. If you can get through a stage without dying, write down the password. Do that until like stage 5, and the rest of the game is doable. I thought you just had to do all this shit in one go, like contra, sans the konami code
Its been 2 years you still haven't gotten good? No wonders why Joel is better.
Not the most elegant use of FM.
"This _will_ involve save states […]"
_And,_ he missed a lot of rooms because he didn't up the difficulty.
Love the game, love you, Vin, but hard pass. Sorry.
I think vinny is being way too hard on the soundtrack of this game. For the genesis, this is actually impressive considering how some games sound like total shit. Go ahead and look up "Weaponlord" on SNES (which has an amazing soundtrack), and then listen to the genesis version. It's so bad it feels insulting to listen to.
