- First off, HUGE thanks goes out to Tyler (antiwhoknows) for editing the video for me while my computer is down and out.
This is the monthly test of Houston County's outdoor warning siren system, as well as my privately-owned Federal Model 2-240. My siren is now on a new "perch", right at about 15 feet from the ground and on an actual utility pole instead of a 4x4 post. The siren does a double growl during the pre-test voice messages as a heads up to anyone in the immediate area, and is then followed by a 30sec alert tone alongside the county's sirens, and finally a ~30sec attack signal, usually consisting of two cycles. - Věda a technologie
Beautiful siren and scenery man if that is your backyard then I love how you got a river just going through it so peaceful !!
awesome job on this siren Ian! kudos to Tyler for editing it for ya. always enjoy the sound of this Model 2
A combination of the number of ports plus the motor speed at the supplied voltage, just so happens to make the siren produce the same top-end pitch as a modern Whelen. It actually blends in almost perfectly with our Whelens, they're only a couple of Hz off from each other (makes a weird "phasing" sound a lot like how a Sentry 16V1T-B sounds).
WHOA, freaking fast wind down
you can hear the talking tornado sirens in the background
Yes indeed.
This is the siren you hear in old movies
@sirenfan97 I have a Darley 2T that has the original Darley housing (it's red). This housing here was actually from a Federal 2T-120, since the Model 2 didn't have a housing originally.
Fedelcode was a division of Federal Electric way back in the 40s and 50s, which usually meant they were coded (thus, the FedelCODE part). W.S. Darley bought siren cores from Federal, which they re-branded and stuck inside their own custom housings. They quit using Federal in the 80s I believe, and now sell re-branded Sentry sirens.
@Cobras7111 Yeah, I need to get up there and slack up the brush tension in the motor so it doesn't cause so much drag. I know it's not the bearings doing it because that sucker will coast FOREVER without the brushes in it, causing all that friction.
@amtrak3501 Thanks Bill! Took quite a lot of work to get there, but man was it worth it. Oh yeah, definite kudos to Tyler! lol
Do you have another model 2 with the Darley housing on or did you change it?
@TheFiremansavage Of course lol. I swear, all of us in the county need to petition for that to be removed from the test procedure at least, can't remember if they actually do that during warnings or not since I've only heard them twice (they probably do...).
Why does it sound like a Whelen?
@Blue10AEMia I know right?? If that pole and the wire were just a little bit bigger, I'd put something out there that would drown that much out for sure!
how old? It looks new but usually new Model 2s are all gray. Is it restored or new with a custom paint job.
+Money Bags The siren itself was originally made in the 1960s, but I completely overhauled it both mechanically and cosmetically inside and out back in March of 2010. It really needs to have its housing taken down to be cleaned up and waxed soon, since the topcoat has lost its sheen and is starting to look pretty dull. (though it hasn't faded, yay!)
murrfarms Cool!
murrfarms How do you activate it? is there an Ar timer in your house or what?
Why is it in the middle of water?
Its not
looks like a birdhouse.
Haha yes indeed! :-)
It's not, it's on a pole in my backyard near the lake.
Why does darley and fedelcode copy this?
Hey I live in the Woodlands and I live a couple hours away I wish we could meet but no Bc of the virus 😔
Start at 0:54.
I can hear talking whelens
very short wind-down
Hey, may I jump in on the topic of the Spanish voice messages during tests? I can't stand them, it ruins a recording in my opinion, one language should be enough, then the siren sounding should tip them off, I'd love it if companies got rid of that
Dafanmon2500 To ruin our peacefulness fishing. :)
