Who is your favorite COMMENTATOR on CZcams? Does that person comply with ⭐️ FAIR USE ⭐️rules?
Why dont you make arabic captions ? It will be great
أنا محمد i’m Mohammed l OK. That sounds like a good idea!
Mine would be... not sure
Ian Corzine
Hi Ian,
I wanted to try a new concept of showing videos from different perspectives, then having my audience & I work towards a solution. Obviously this will take much longer then the 3-5 second rule. I assume it would be ok to “link” these videos in the description of the show, play them in their entirety & that way I am not violating “fair use.” Would that still meet guidelines?

ok so i want to use videos from youtube or wherever to do reaction videos. do I need to be watching the video live while recording myself doing the reaction in obs or do I acquire the video by wtv means and add my overlay after? thnx if you answer
i am so glad i found your channel, whenever i read a creator comment about copyright anywhere i let them know about your channel it helps us all make better videos
This series MUST continue. Thanks for this, Ian.
Awwww...Thank you for watching AND for your kind words. I hope I am providing content that is useful to creators. 👊😁
@@iancorzine useful AND thought provoking. I'm sure it sparks imaginations of those out there based off the examples you use. When it's all said and done, the clips one would "use" would be comparable to how Hip Hop producers USES "SAMPLES" TO MAKE BEATS.
Thanks for the information. How did you obtain (download) the Linus clip to embed in this video?
You also make commentary on your example. Thank you for sharing this info =)
Thanks so much for watching, I really appreciate it!
Thanks for the tips and pointers to what to do to avoid copyright issues. Commenting regarding the last video to with gaming copyrights. Love your stuff man and helping to create legit CZcams channels
Great series. Can’t wait for the next one. I appreciate the work put into these videos 👍
Thanks so much Whiskey!!!
Hi, Ian. You've once answered my a question I had in this video, and you replied about using portions of the video and commenting and/or reacting to it. Based on this, I have a follow-up question from you: where you said about clips being short (2 to 5 seconds long) at 6:28, is it possible to do a longer clip of the copyrighted work, but comment or react during most of it?
Appreciate these videos so much. Would you happen to have any advice for doing commentary on lengthy clips? Sometimes the really crucial one-liners I want to reference can run longer than 5 seconds. Thank you so much!
Hello! Does the audio source used for a reaction video matter, whether it's a CZcams video on the artist's official account, a YT video uploaded by a fan or audio from a CD? Thanks!
I understood this to be the case in the context of video essays, however I've been struggling to find information on what would be considered commentary in reference to something like a game mod. What I mean is, would someone basing their mod off of copyrighted material be considered a commentary on the material itself in that it's their interpretation of and expression of said material showing appreciation? If so, what would be the limitations and exemptions in this regard?
I'm asking due to the current situation with Nintendo going after modifications for the game Garry's Mod, an 18 year old game, out of the blue and very harshly. Do these creators have any legal standing or defense?
I'd love to get more information about this and considering how well you explained this I hope you'd consider covering this topic!
Just to add, in case you're not aware of the situation, these mods made by the community are not for profit (as far as I am aware, if there are outliers they are not the norm and shouldn't be taken into consideration anyway, however I'd be interested to know how this would affect the majority if there was a small few that were profiting where they shouldn't be, and if this would basically destroy any defense others who were not being scummy would have) but I'm sure if you cover this you'll look into it. I just thought I'd add some extra info that could help you decide whether it's worth you're time or not
Great rule to have and know the in and outs of, Thanks for the info brother!👍
Hey Cliff! Thanks so much for watching!
Appreciate the information, thank you.
Thank you so much! You’re amazing and I appreciate this channel 🎉
Why doesnt this have more views!? Liked, subed and shared! Thanks for the vid.
Kindly advise If the commentary can be a non-verbal one? For example, me reacting to a copyrighted video and giving my opinions in the form of texts displayed on the screen. Can I do that? Thank you...
hello Ian great video this is exactly the info i needed, i ask if you do all this, and properly to fall under fair use through commentary, would you still be constrained to using minimal amount of video/song 3-5seconds?
Pat Condell is my favorite CZcamsr. He does all his own original material. So I can’t imagine him ever having a problem.
Hopefully not. The problem is that sometimes people claim other's work as their own and they are successful in getting the other person's video blocked. So frustrating. Thanks for watching. 👊😁
Besides getting Fair Use literate-ish, I love all the channels you introduce us to, "charisma on demand" definitely going on my list, thank you MA

Awesome

@@iancorzine welcome sir
EXACTLY what i needed to hear.
Thank you.
Bless you for this video! I'm just starting out and have been looking for this precise information! Awesome content huge thumbs up!
I love the vid! Very relevant.
Quick question..
What if my commentary is in a form of text? No voice and with noncopyrighted background music
Would it still qualify the fair use?
Thanks!
Can 'Fair Use' apply to videos that are being interpreted to English, where the video was originally posted on social media, in a foreign language other than English? In other words, would I be able to post videos by using other people's content that I translated into English with added voice interpretation and English subtitles?
I've been searching for this information. Thank you
Hi! Love your youtube channel. I am only starting out and would like to ask if below is copyright if i post on youtube..
I take an online survey like a "personality test" or "which disney character i am", etc. give my thoughts about myself. Thanks!
Best video on this topic! Good work
thanks so much for hard work on tips
You are so welcome!! Thank you for watching AND for your kind words. 👊😁
This is really great content. Thank you for this!!
Thanks so much Alisha!!!
Hi Ian, I'm thinking of starting a CZcams channel where I'd teach plot structure using TV episodes as examples. The way that I wanted to do it was by having my voice talking about the structure of the particular episode that I'm talking about (say, The Office Season 4 Episode 1), and while I'm talking about the structure of that episode, I'd have relevant clips from that episode playing, although the audio from those video clips wouldn't be playing, just the video.
My questions are: if I monetize the video, does that fall under fair use, and am I okay to start making videos like that? If not, then would I be alright to do that WITHOUT monetizing the videos? And failing that, what if I used pictures of the SCRIPT from that episode instead of actual video clips? As in, the video would just be me and then images of relevant portions of the script from that episode?
Thanks in advance for any help that you can provide. I love your videos!
My channel is centered around reaction/review/commentary/critique (mostly of movie trailers). When I get copyright claims I often use the "review" fair use argument (in the beginning I used "reaction"). But I've wondered if I should use "commentary" instead. Because that is what I often do in reaction to a trailer I watch. I don't just play the trailer and film my facial reactions. At the end, I discuss my thoughts about the trailer, the story, the actors, review how well the trailer was done, etc - various things. So is "commentary" more accurate than "reaction" or even "review?"
So if any youtuber talks about memes, music, gameplays, or even paintings and they pull out of that picture video clip or audio, will that consider as a fair use?
Hello Mr. Corzine! I was wondering, my friends and I have started this CZcams channel where we react to and review movies (in separate videos). For the reactions, we watch through the movie together and then cut out most of the movie for the final video. While we record, we usually speak over and discuss the movie as it is playing, thus preventing us from using a short clip, which you mention is preferable. Would this still be considered commentary (or any other form of Fair Use), even though we are not distinctly pausing the movie and discussing it?
Thank you for all of your videos on the copyright and fair use ideas and laws! I am actually starting to understand!
I am confused over the time element here. If I want to analyze a photograph and tell why it works, such as where the lights were placed and the depth of field and how the background was handled, I would have to leave the copyrighted photograph up on the screen for most of the duration of the video. Would this not be allowed because of the time?
So far I haven't done this because when you look on Getty, for example, there is a cost for editorial use. Any advice appreciated!
Hey Jill -- I mean, you could. It's just a risk you take. You have to remember we're dealing with CZcams policies here and bots. What you've described is Fair Use, however, bots sometimes make mistakes. My advice is better be safe than sorry.
@@iancorzine Thank you! So happy to have some guidance.👏
@@iancorzine now i understand
Great video once again :) Thanks for all your help Ian
Hey Cam! Thank YOU!
Hi alot of info on your channel thank you 😊 i got a question what if the artwork on sale comes with terms such as “cannot be publicly reviewed ...” Can others still review it according to fair use law?
I would like to know if written quotes in a video would be an issue or are they
subject to copyright also?
Written words are subject to copyright, too, and so you have to put Fair Use principles to work!
Best channel on the subject!
I have 2 questions:
1. Is copyright strike and copyright claim the same thing?
2. I used some songs in my video and I wrote comments on the clips but the audio still got copyright claim. I cannot remove the audio because well if I'm giving my feedback on the song, I'll have to play it i guess. What should I do?
The Copyrights Club!!! I mean Copyrights Squad!! Yeah!!! Hahaha! Thanks Bro Ian and got a lot more new idea for commentary.
More power to you. 😎👍
Thanks so much Deso for all your support!!!
Excited to hear your ideas on commentary!!!
Thanks for the help Ian! 😉❤️
Well, thanks so much for watching JD!
Hi Ian, thanks for your video. If I am correct in my understanding, you can no longer do music reaction videos where you let the video play and simultaneously describe the musical techniques the artists are using. You would get a copyright claim. If you dispute the claim under fair use, even though You Tube has a category for reaction videos and you can state that you were simply providing a review of the video, if the copyright holder wanted to they could actually cause you to go from a copyright claim to a copyright strike?
Hey quick question Ian. Are CZcamsrs like Ozzy Man within the rights of Fair Use, as he does comical reviews on the various videos on the Internet? Thanks you!
As you promised. Thanks Ian. I'll share it to my friends. Expect that you'll be flooded by subs 🙂
Awwwwh! Thank you SO much! I appreciate you!
Can we commentary about image . Plan to commentary about cricket match with cricket images .please give me advice .thank you
Love the Charisma on Command channel.
What if I want to use video game footage in my video but then I talk about how these clips relate to what I am discussing? Is this considered fair use? I just want to make sure that I won't get copyrighted before I start posting videos. Like if I played a clip then talked about how it helps prove my theory?
Do you think we can monetize videos where we add unique comments to "content uploaded many times by other creators"?
Because while commenting on videos makes using other people's monetizable. "Content uploaded many times by other creators" falls into the content reused policy and seems to imply that using other people's videos are not monetizable. I am confused.
are you allow to play the full video while commenting on it?
Thanks for your videos! I'm learning a lot! I have a question tho, what if I want to create a mashup video of different clips from other CZcams videos? Like for example, could I use 15 20 seconds of different videos of people talking about motivation and put them all together in one video?. Is that allowed?
And is it possible also, to do this, and use a popular song in the background in a lower volume, but still have the audio from each of the different clips?
Wow. Great video, Im loving this series. Thanks for following up!! BEST YT LAWYER :)
Aww thanks!!! 💗👊😀
Can i add text caption on copyright video instead of commentary?
spot on bud
My question is where to find the downloadable clips such as the Ben Shapiro video?
I love your videos. I have a question though. I want to make tech videos in my Native language. Can I use short clips other peoples tech videos and make a voiceover in my Language. Explaining what's happening on the screen. Is it considered fair use?
Commentary-seption... classic.
Question: Are there any approaches for copyright that cover the use of a video for a punchline? or just comedy? Does "Parody" cover this?
Hey Chris -- it's possible that parody covers what you describe but I'd have to see it. Generally, what most YT are doing today is not parody -- it's just using copyrighted material for the punchline, which is not Fair Use.
@@iancorzine thanks for clearing that up Ian! Keep up the great work 😁👍
He sir can I make my own sports video and then can use commentry from professional match is that copyright or not?
For the Linus Tech Tips example, doesn't that seem more like critique than commentary?
What about gameplay commentary 10 - 15 minutes? is it okay?
What if your doing an episode recap and the. Share your opinions at the end if thr episode run time is 25 mins how much footage can i use
Hi! Thanks for this video! I`m preparing a channel that will have commentaries and reviews on fashion shows, editorials and fashion collections, along side video commentary on styling from kpop mvs. So.... just because i will put my opinion, describe and analyze in details what is going on and explain the complicated aspects of them, the videos will be under fair use and not be claimed or struck????
Thumbs up for the quality alone 🙌🏾
Hi, Ian. I have a question for you regarding your critique/criticism and commentary videos I just saw: at one point, I've seen videos of people talking about certain DVDs from their favorite movies or TV shows they've obtained. Does that count as critique/criticism, commentary, or the creators original work?
Hi Emily. To answer your question, If the creators show portions of the video and then comment and/or react to it, it is considered Fair Use and it becomes their original work. However, they need to abide by the Fair Use exception laws which includes keeping it short and giving credit to the original creator. I hope this answers your question. Thanks for watching AND for reaching out. 👊😀
@@iancorzine, okay, thank you.
Hi Ian, I impressed with your video. If I created a video, and put a commentary as a text not voice , is it counts ?
Yes. That should be fine. As long as you abide by the other rules as well. 👊😁
So I was wondering, what if I am interviewing a person that was on a late night talk show? What if I used the clip that featured the person I am interviewing? And we talked about what happened and how did they get to be featured on that talk show after I showed the clip? Does that count as part of the fair use guidelines?
Yes, as long a you follow the Fair Use rules. Make sure the clip is only 2-5 seconds long (10 secs max) and that you comment and/or react directly to the clip you just showed. You may want to watch some of my other videos that talk more about this. Thanks for watching AND I hope this answered your question. 👊😁
I'm unclear what the difference is between critique and commentary. Could you clarify that, please?
All about that commentary life! haha
You know it!! 👊😁
Im planing to make a channel to review movies and top10list and such, similar to watchmojo channel.is it ok to follow the approach of watchmojo channel????commenting while playing movie parts in background??
Hi
Thank you for your awesome videos. I learned so much and I already subscribed to your channel.
Can you please help me with my questions? I couldn't find a good answer anywhere. How can we use copyrighted movies or videos to make countdown list like top10 lists from watchmojo. I also recommend you to make a video about this because I saw on many forums people were looking for an answer. Thanks
this information is PARAMOUNT!!!!! does using the copyrighted material/GIFS (7 seconds and under) to comedically comment/compliment what im talking about in the video?
if i edit one minute video and make it 5 secs video without commentary is it fair use?
Can you explain how channels like riddle & what if uses copyrighted material without getting strikes? ?
You made this great video 3 years ago. Are these ways valid in todays date ?
you my man are a saint
You deserves a million views.
Thank you so much!!! I'm trying to help creators be successful. 👊😀
Hey Ian! How do you know if a video is copyrighted? Any input appreciated. Thanks!
Everything has a copyright attached to it by whomever created it (whether they have registered it or not), therefore you can just assume that ALL videos are copyrighted. You cannot use material that is not yours or that you do not have permission to use. It's really that simple. 👊😀
Are you allowed to create a reaction video that only shows 7 second clips at a time? Thanks Ian.
Can I download someone’s entire workout video, and do a picture in picture of me trying their workout. with me adding commentary about the workout? Maybe add some copyright free music in the background.
How to explain watchmojo? They basically use film clips throughout all their videos.
Don’t really have a favorite commentator. . . 🤷🏻♂️ Here’s a question for you- if you use copyrighted material and get a strike from CZcams, is there a way to remove the strike, either by taking the video down or altering the copyrighted material? Or is the strike permanent?
No -- the strike drops off in 90 days, unless you get another.
Regarding commentary, and I hope someone can answer ...if you are reviewing a song, for example, and you are listening and commenting throughout the video, is that considered fair use? Thank you 🙏
Yoo! ✌️😀 Ian.. thank you so much.. 😁 I just uploaded my latest video on which I've used 25 songs with commentary and only got 2 copyright claims... I already disputed the claims with appropriate reasons and hoping that they'll remove copyright claims..! Thank you so much Ian! You saved me.. 😊
And do you also think positive that they are gonna remove the claims? .. 🤔 let's hope for the best.. ✌️
After all I've given positive commentary and I think it's gonna be promotional for their artworks..
No problem! Happy to help!
Hi Ian! I find your videos so helpful. Thank you for making this kind of content! I'm trying to upload a reaction to a new music video, and I want to show the entire video pausing along the way to interject with my thoughts. Do you have any suggestions for trying to react to longer stretches of content? Because every time I upload the video it keeps getting a copyright claim and/or taken down entirely despite the fact that I am offering commentary throughout the entire thing. Thank you so much!
I would love to help out and answer any questions you may have!
You can book a call and set up a scheduled 1-on-1 call with me.
iancorzinescheduling.as.me/ian
Thanks so much!
Ian, are you saying that with the macbook pro video,if I filmed the computer itself and didn't talk about it???
I could get a strike??? Just for showing their computer???
No. If you filmed the computer yourself, then you would have the copyright on the material. It's if you used Apple's video of the computer that you would have the copyright hurdle.
@@iancorzine Ok got it! Thank you for clarifying it for me!!!
This helps me because I've gotten into music remixes and it can kick me in the behind
Yep! Really hard stuff to do on CZcams.
@@iancorzine I agree! But I have rights as long as the music is my own work
i just wanna thank you for making this
Nothing better than getting free advice from a lawyer!
Haha! Thanks man -- I so appreciate it!
Hey Ian. What's your view on the Honest Trailer videos by Screen Junkies? How much is that considered fair use since the entire video is made up of movie clips? Are they risking getting in some legal territory there? And what about mashups where you take audio from one movie and insert it to another for the purpose of comedy? Thanks!
Quick question- creators like Linus and Charisma for sure monetize their videos, so is it still considered fair use even if they're making money off of other people's work? And with that being said, am I allowed to monetize a video of me commentating over a video that I didn't create?
Hey Ian! Thanks for directing me to this video. I am still confused about something. I want to make a reaction video featuring clips from the Dr. Phil show. How do I avoid copyright strikes? Any input appreciated. Thanks!
Hi Marina (again)!! I believe you watched my previous video about Fair Use. There are 5 guidelines in there that you must abide by: The video you share can only be 3-5 seconds long, and then you must comment and/or react to the video you just showed. The video on Fair Use is the main video and then I have made other videos to explain more of it. I would suggest you watch several of my videos and then I bet you will begin to understand it. 👊😀
Will you be posting the other approaches soon?
Absolutely!! Just keep watching!! AND thanks for asking. 👊😁
I do language -learning-related content for the somewhat obscure language Esperanto. One idea I've had is to dub and comment on other people's videos into .... uh .... better Esperanto. Ideally, I'd like to get permission to do this, but I wonder if it could be considered fair use - education, commentary.... The clips would probably not be short - which is something you keep saying.
And again, I think I would rather get permission to use the clips because I'm sure people would appreciate feedback better if they knew it was coming and gave permission first.
Yeah, getting permission is best. Thank you for watching!
Hey Ian Corzine!!! What about real estate listing photos for transformative content? When does fair use kick in if you are a realtor making shorts on youtube of other peoples listings.
Do reaction videos like anime reaction videos considered as commentary and fair use? Lately, anime channels haven been receiving a lot of demonization, claims and strikes and even some being terminated(like mine). It would be great to know your view on this. 😁
Thank you for this information. My channel is to teach people to be Script Supervisors, and I want to use movie scenes to show how to describe them. Can I get away with showing a 1-minute clip, then commenting on it, and then disect each section. But I want to show the sequence all together first. How can I do that?
pretty sure u can
i think u can get away with under 3min
but try doing even less
Are you sure that I can get a copyrighted media on my videos with fair use?
~ keep it short? How does New Rockstars spend hours breaking down entire tv episodes?
But how can channels like Watchomjo use clips from hollywood movies in their videos without doing commentary over it when giving examples?
