Do these digital tuners use vibration on the neck or sound in the air?

what does the number on the left side of the letter mean??

The number indicates what string it thinks that you are playing/trying to tune. So if you play the top string, it will say 4G, meaning 4th string, and the note is G. This is reliant on you having the right instrument setting on the tuner.

When I put the tuner on ukulele mode ,any string I pluck it shows G. What should I do

try placing your finger on the G string whilst you pluck the other string. It may be a case of sympathetic vibrations. Or it could be your tuner. Try download one of the free tuner apps and see if the problem persists.

@@MarksUkuleleTips well I just got the tuner so it's new. The mobile apps show me that it's fine perfectly but the tuner isn't showing anything other than G when I pluck any string in the ukulele mode. In he chromatic mode also it shows me that the ukulele is tuned perfectly but when I turn it to ukulele mode it's just showing G no matter if I change other notes it's still the same

Then there is a problem with the tuner. If it works okay in Chromatic, then use it in that mode. The ukulele preset is more about limiting what the tuner is going to look for than anything else. Chromatic is basically wide open in terms of what it will display. Any note you are near, it will display, whereas if it's on the ukulele preset it will keep pushing to get you towards the standard tuning notes of a ukulele.

Sorry I disagree with the way you teach how to use the tuner. The tuner should be selected to Chromatic or C. Chromatic allows you to check the notes of the string even if it is outside the range of U=GCEA. This avoid what we term "blindspot" . I had novice tuning the string till it broke in U mode by never in chromatic mode. My humble opinion is the function U and G simply narrow the tones of the notes it detected. These functions creates more problem for novice than helpful.
