  • Ah sure look, sometimes you gotta play the classics, right?
Here's a snippet of Dirty Old Town, recorded live from Ukulele Tuesday HQ a.k.a. The Stag's Head, in the heart of Dublin City. Come see us trying to break the record of how many ukuleles can fit in a pub there every Tuesday.

3 months after we posted our humble cover, it's with deep sadness we learnt of the passing of Shane McGowan of The Pogues. His unique, unmistakable voice, which popularised this tune among others, will be missed. Our condolences to his family.
Sinéad O'Connor, Christy Dignam and now Shane McGowan - what a sad year it has been for Irish music... but we'll play on.

I worked in Sarnia building a rail tunnel under the St Clair River, there was a lot of Irish and Scottish working in the oil refineries etc. One Irish family the husband worked on the rail ferry that our tunnel would close down. Yet we found friendship, his wife ran a B&B and Irish bands would stay there. Arriving late at night after their gig, but no matter some beers, bread and cheese on the huge kitchen table and the instruments would come out. I didn't play anything, but they would not have me just sitting there, so it was the spoons for me. But I had to cut down the visits to only Fridays and Saturdays, as work got in the way of enjoyment. PS: This was in 1994/5

@@Dave-im3lm It is indeed. But the great thing about this, why it's so popular, and what makes it so reminicient, is it could be applied to any old dirty industrial/ex-industrial town. I'm also from Liverpool, and I also think of Liverpool when I hear it because that's the town I know and where I've always sang it in pubs (I've always known it was originally written about Salford). It's also why, since Irish bands started doing covers of it, most people think it's written about Dublin.

Only written as a time filler for a scene change for a play he had written (often forgotten that McColl completely reformed theatre before he did the same to folk music) but the song connects. For me, McColls point always comes in his final verse... and the song was a call for social reform of the working class cities. In the case of Salford, vtge Town the song was written about, that regeneration didn't happen meaningfully until the late 80s... over 30/40 years after MacColls plea

Awww thanks! Yeah we try and play with dynamics to make it interesting. And add some cool instrumentation. And modulation, too... The Pogues version has 2 or 3 key changes! Were they trying for a Eurovision hit, or what?

Met some of you in hotel bar in Cheshire. Great fun and I was castigated for playing F incorrectly. I pointed out to the lovely young lady I was playing a baritone in G. I was awarded a Tuesday marker which is still stitched to my strap. If my legs make it I will visit you in Dublin where there are connections!

Let's keep the faith, remember our past plight, even though things are not so great for some, let's continue to provide a home, a refuge for people, women, children fleeing war, famine, destitution.

I have some original Irish/Celtic songs I created that would have people dancing on the tables. I hope to to play those in Ireland someday.
