The original first line was gasworks CROFT. We had many crofts near us. They were a plot of land where a building had been demolished and levelled. Often they would build wooden garages for locals to rent. We used to play football and cricket on them.
Hope no one has forgotten that this song was written by the immortal Ewan MacColl, (born in Salford in 1915). Who also wrote "if ever I saw your face".

This not the way he did on his first album though. I had that album, early 70's, and didn't know this was a Irish song till years later. The first album version still my favourite.
