5th gen 4Runner biggest tire - fender liner mod
Vložit
- čas přidán 24. 07. 2024
- Factory tire size: 265/70/r17
Max tire size totally stock: 275/70/r17
Max tire size with fender liner mod: 285/70/r17
All of the above will fit in the spare tire location.
This applies to all 5th gen 4Runners, but the screw location on 2014+ is slightly different.
If you're planning on taking your vehicle off road you might need to limit up travel by adding a lift, or extending your bump stops.
Adding a wheel spacer or aftermarket wheels may require you to do the body mount chop, which is something I did not want to do at this time.

I barely ever comment on videos but I have heard about this mod for years and never had it explained so clearly and concisely before. Great job.
Thanks, I appreciate it!
Agreed. Clearly demonstrated.
Agreed
I had been looking for this mod and your explanation its the best thank you.
Best teaching I have found for this. Thanks.
smack my head. why did it take watching like 40 plus videos just to finally see this and get the answers i needed. thank you
YOU SAVED MY LIFE BROTHER WITH YOUR TUTORIAL. I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM, TREMENDOUS IDEA AND SOLUTION TO THOSE OF US WHO ARE GOING FOR BIGGER TIRES AND RIMS, GREETINGS
Thanks brother! Put some bigger AT's on the wife's rig and caught a rub on the liner so was running down the path of a small lift which was unnecessary. Then I found this video and 30 minutes later all was good!!
Just got done doing this on mine. Newer 5th gens are a little different than what you show in this video, but I was able to use the same general concept you showed. Thanks for giving me the confidence to just go for it!
Did you install the 33's. I have a 2020 and looking to do the same with minimal work
This is a great explanation. Thanks so much. Have been searching for a long time
Best video for this mod. Finally straight to the point. I'd buy you beer if you were here. Thanks for the video brother
This was so simple and after cutting up my plastic, I ordered new ones and did this simply trick
This was the best damn CZcams help I’ve ever received. Zero need for sawzall. I feel like I need to pay you. Thanks again
Hahahaha
This helps so much thank you
Thanks for this ! Looking to lift my 4Runner via bilsteins 5100 set to 1.75” and switching to 285s . Seeing this video I’m sure the new tire size will fit just fine with minor trimming/mods
Jm92, did you end up doing this fender mod? I also have bilstein 5100s set to 1.75 and want to upgrade to 285s. Curious if it really was as easy as this video makes it seem!
@@dillonpaiva3798 I ended up going with a dobinsons 2.5” lift with 275s and yes this mod is pretty straight forward.
@@dillonpaiva3798@IPinoyBoy69 I am on the way to do 275s with my 1.75 front/1” rear already on 😂
Great to the point diy video!
Thanks!
Hey looks great 🐟🐟🎣🎣
Do you think BF Goodrich AT KO2 275/70R/17 will have any rub on a stock suspension (and 17 inch stock TRD wheel) 2020 4Runner TRD Pro?
Great Video! So this would work for 33/12r22 right?
My 275 70 17s definitely rub (wildpeaks) stock everything
Mines doing the same. How did u fix it? I’ve ordered bilstein kit, thinking of lifting about 2 inches front hoping to solve the issue.
nice video.. so the 275s will not rub on aftermarket wheels without any mods, lift and etc?
2020 TRD Pro 4 runner with Spidertrax Toyota 6 on 5-1/2" x 1-1/4" Thick Black Wheel Spacer Kit. Will this work straight up? Everything else stock. Thanks in advance for response.
I just got 275/70/17 the other day n it rubs in both side during sharp turn. This isn’t going to help me is it?
Do you a video of your lift? I appreciate your videos!
Yes! I have a complete guide: czcams.com/video/KAgSmIdSVeI/video.html
What about 255/75/17 or even 255/80/17?
Great demo! For some reason I thought you needed to do the body chop with going to 285/70/R17s. Thought it was recommended to go to larger rim with that large of a tire as the stock rims are a little skinny for this application. If I rememver right it has do to with the risk of breaking your bead in air down situations.
Did you need to body chop?
@@thadpole5275 No haven't got that far yet, will likely do all that when I'm ready to upgrade suspension and also consider Nitro gears for rear end due to complaints of the larger tires affecting the gearing so much. Do one thing affects a cascade of others. Engineering, what a concept, an expensive one!
How about 4th I just got 275 70s 18 and the fender liner in front rubs bad and a little bit on the control arm on top but that's only at completely full lock
No clue - I’ve never owned a 4th gen!
What do you suggest for a trd pro 4runner 2019? That has the stock Fox shocks on there? I have the 275s on there with a Southern Style off-road high clearance bumper mod cut, and SSO winch bumper.
So basically the front is cut. I do go off-road for my photo work. Nothing hardcore but still off-road. Do I need to cut anything in the back to fit 33s on a stock trd pro? Trouble when compressed and so on?
Debating throwing on 33s. Keep going back and forth.
285/70/17 should fit, but slight differences in tire brands and wheel offset can make a difference.
what is the model # for those rims?
Looking at the pre and the post, it would seem that you had also raised the suspension somewhat.
You're right. The shot at the very end is after I lifted it. The 'after' shot of the fender liner mod is exactly the same as the very first shot, since you can't see the mod unless you're up close.
Although I'll concede that I should have had some footage of me driving around in the stock vehicle!
I’m looking to do this on my 2012 4runner limited. I’m pulling out the XREAS and putting in 5100 bilstein struts with coils they will give me a 2.5 inch lift in front and 1.5 in the back.
With this mod do you think I’ll have any bad rubbing if I go on some light trials and the new struts and coils I’ll be putting on?
Thanks!
I had absolutely no rubbing after doing just the mod, while still running stock suspension! With the Bilsteins you could probably do any trail out there without rubbing!
Did you lift it? I have a limited as well.
I chopped the front bumper on my 2011 limited 🙃
😂😂😂😂😂😂 me too
I want to put on 285/70/17 before my lift comes in from being backordered. Doing this should be ok right?
I did!
what's the gear?
Thanks for the video, did you have any issues with the driver’s side window feeling loose after drilling a new hole? I pushed mine forward but the upper front of the liner is loose and causing a flapping noise at highway speeds.
Is the front screw a self tapper? What's holding it in? It look like it would eventually fall out. Wouldn't it be better to use a new screw with washer and nut?
It’s the same one originally used to hold the bumper, reinstalled in the same location. You just create a new hole for it.
@@RevereOverland but the hole is not threaded or secure, or is it?
@@RevereOverland BTW I'm not trying to argue. I'm genuinely asking
@@mobius012 If you are worried about it popping loose then it would be easy to use an actual bolt, washer, nut combo to hold it all together.
@@currybike I ended up doing it exactly as the op suggested and its worked so far.
Does the 285 tire make the ride more comfortable? I would like to optimize for comfort for city/highway driving
It can. More sidewall between the wheel and the road can help when hitting bumps and potholes. On the other hand, bigger tires often come with a thicker sidewall (don't get E rated tires), which can have the opposite effect. Most people choose to go with bigger tires to help with off road driving; the more you can air the tire down, the better it rides on bumpy trails.
Thank you for your response and the tips. I will keep in mind the tire rating and avoid the “E” tires. I have the 2010 limited edition and don’t do off-roading (it’s red not awd) so i mainly just want the ride to be as comfortable as possible for city and highway.
Hello, what is your wheels' width? My 2010 4runner has 7", which I think will not fit a 285 Thank you
285s will fit on ur 7” rim. I was running that on 17x7 wheels
@@teke237 Thank you sir
What works for him may not work for everybody else. Keep in mind he's on stock wheels. Wider rims and negative offset will most likely required more trimming/chopping
Why would you need wider rims for those 285s?
Yup. Learning my lesson now with -12 offset.😣
I have 285/70/17s on my 4runner with a 3inch lift and they rub the upper control arms and I haven't found anyone else with this problem
I don't understand how some people have problems with it. Maybe alignment?
Do you have aftermarket upper control arms? Many aftermarket UCA's require more backspacing to clear the UCA when running a 32.5 or larger tire. You likely need different wheels or a hub centric spacer like one from spidertrax. But then you'll probably need a BMC and fender cut in front..
@@RevereOverland I think the 2010-2013 Gen 5 4runners have a bit more room than the 2014+ as they received a slight "face lift" in 2014.
hmmmm, my 2020 has the windshield washer fluid reservoir right behind pass fender liner, I can only move it maybe a 1/2 of an inch. Is the previous models like this to??
So they won’t rub driving on the street but they probably will off-road?
Im curious too🧐
Yes, that is what he said towards the end. They may not rub on the sides of wheel well, but on the top
Was this with stock height?
When I made the video it was stock height. I drove it for a week at stock height after making the video. The picture at the end is after I did a lift.
Will BMC be required too?
No. Not for 285/70/r17.
Does the mud flap need to remain off, or can you put it back on once the front fender liner has been pushed forward?
That's what I want to know. I didn't understand the removal of the mud flap, or if there's a way to clean up the look after removal (rather than leaving those holes).
Just take the whole thing off. There are no holes if you put the screws back in their original holes and looks much better
Just put 275/70/17 on my 2016 5th gen. They rub when wheel is fully turned. I believed CZcams that they wouldn’t. CZcams was wrong.
I’ve never heard of 275/70/r17 causing problems. Stock wheels? Spacer?
Revere Overland Stock wheels, no spacers or anything... 1.75’’ lift in the front... the rubbing is slight but undeniable. BFG K02s. Gonna push the finder liner forward per your video!
Update: I pushed the fender liners (super easy, as you said)... but now I see the fender itself is *SUPER* close to the tire at full lock. Like, too close for comfort. Gonna leave it for now but may end up trimming the actual fender with a utility knife if I make contact on uneven terrain or something. Also, the tires are literally brand new. After 10k miles I’ll gain a tiny bit more space o guess
I’m glad it’s working out for you, but I am genuinely surprised they rubbed! I had 285s on stock height and only rubbed full lock in reverse! It seems odd that the same model vehicle would have that much variation.
Revere Overland maybe it’s because I’m 1.75’’ higher than stock? Seems like that would make it better, not worse... but the bottom part of the fender liner that curves back in towards the tire was moved up and thus closer to the middle of the tire, so who knows
Is that 275/70/17 will fit without any modifications
Yes. And 285 with fender liner mod.
I put that size on my TRD Pro rims ('19 4runner) and it rubbed. Did a Bilstein 2.85" lift and they still rub just a tad when backing and turning off a curb.
JR Cook same. 275/70/17 rubs a little.
Dear Sir
Hope you doing well
Could you please tell me if I can mount 285/60 R18 with 0 offset on stock 2017 4Runner without any rubbing issues?
Mines rub when im in 4x4 and turning
I’m running spacers on mine
Do you not need spacers?
You’re actually more likely to rub with spacers!
Revere Overland that insteresting . I’m going to remove them. I’ve been running them for a while but I’m always worried about them breaking. Even though they are good quality
Damn I was worried about this I have a 19 TRD and I wanted to go 285 but I was debating on 275 seems like an easy mod
How’s the gas mileage??? Any issues here
It's super easy, and worth doing for the 285s!
It's hard to say how gas mileage was affected, since I did this mod about 10 days after I bought the vehicle, then lifted it the weekend after. I currently get about 17mpg with the tires, lift, roof rack, and roof top tent.
@@RevereOverland what kind of lift do you have? Anything else of note? I like your setup, not over the top wide, good fender gap, aesthetically pleasing. Thanks
It’s the Old Man Emu lift kit. I’ve got a video showing the install, and linked to each of the parts I used.
10 mm socket not ratchet. Lol
You'll need the socket and ratchet!
