    What did the Berbers look like before the Arabs?

    • @josephsofaer841
      @josephsofaer841 Před 4 lety +15

      The same. They are still genetically Berbers. They only took on the Arab identity as a moniker after they accepted Islam like other Arabized groups.

      @@josephsofaer841 I think there should be phenotypic differences, the Haplogroup changed in a big number of them since 1650.
      The Arabs conquered with religion and also genetically. That is why it is so confusing. Arabs were from the Saudi Arabian region, and now they seem to have become several hundred million.
      That is because in spreading Islam, they also spread their DNA. Arab became synonyms with Islam. The North African tribes were not allowed to keep their identity. Those who did not convert were sold as slaves. Its not like an announcement was made, but the descendants of the conquouring Arabs would have dominated and discriminated those who did not adopt Arabic culture and language.
      So, I think the Berbers who were there before 1650 should have looked at least a little different.

    • @josephsofaer841
      @josephsofaer841 Před 4 lety +12

      Denis Mutabazi The Arabs did not spread their DNA. That’s a false claim and although many Peninsular Arabs themselves like to claim that their genes have reached all the way until Sicily and Andalusia, it simply isn’t true.
      The Arabs invaded the Maghreb in 647, so why would their haplogroups change around 1650? And speaking of haplogroups, the Berbers are predominantly Haplogroup E, belonging to Semitic farmers. Whereas most of the Peninsular Arabs belong to Haplogroup J, belonging to Levant farmers. I’m sure there was minimal, individual mixing with all that movement but nothing substantial to change the genetic or phenotypic landscape of the whole population. And this is attested by the haplogroups.
      If there was a huge population replacement or mixing, then for example how Aryans changed the genetic landscape of Central and South Asia, where it is now evident that R1a is the more prevalent haplogroup, the same would have been seen in the Maghreb. But this is not the case.
      In fact, during the Neolithic, it was farmers from the Maghreb who moved into the Levant and the Gulf, giving gene/language input to the Arabs and other related groups.
      Also, the Berbers look nothing like the Gulf Arabs. The Gulf Arabs look more like Pakistanis/North Indians or Iranians. The Berbers look very Mediterranean.
