Lewis Black's Rantcast

  • Lewis is headed overseas, but he left the fans with a stellar episode of The Rantcast. Like many of you, he's having a hard time understanding why a South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem bragged about her animal abuse, why NYC mayor Eric Adams is an idiot, the college campus protests, and ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas. It's enraging for all. But perhaps the silver lining of all this might be the promising season of Baltimore Orioles and their hopes to restore some sanity for Lewis this summer.
    The live rants from this week's episode come straight from The National theater in Richmond, VA and run the gamut of complaints, from the big (climate change) to the small (an ex taking back a gift) and the good people of Richmond showed up.

      It is very difficult, if impossible, to cure a dog that has killed chickens. I tried various methods of "rehabilitation", but the dog would not respond. It was a sad day to have to have the dog put to sleep by the vet. Solution, keep the dog and chickens separated.

    Lewis, as a society we have Never adjusted to what life used to be...kids had access to their Mom in their home nearly all day, not random daycare workers, Fathers that represented the Fear of God not mostly absent weekend Dads girlfriend searching at Dave and Busters. Teachers who are so tired because to pay their rent the deliver Uber Eats till 2am and are back teaching kids at 9am. What is needed for the adjustment must be a livable wage, an ensured higher education or trade school and a miracle of a kinder heart, diversified understanding of others and a default sense of humor!

      I partly agree with your comment but: Fear is not a stable way to parent. I had BOTH types of fathers and it frankly went badly. First my bio dad was the partyer weekender type with numerous girlfriends, and he took off early. Then step that was abusive(multiple types of abuse, and I mean real abuse not negligence). Fear over dad's wild abandon and more fear over stepdad's aggressiveness... so I didn't have a good male rolemodel.
      Mom was the bright side but it was a dark brightside. Tagalong buddy part of the time but also strong work ethic. She worked lots and went to college(didn't end up helping her land a career). She leaned me into grandma as a mom much of the times and both females emotionally unavailable from their own dysfunctional childhoods. I didn't find anyone to be a real support. I had to struggle for even my own mind and identity, and still fighting for it, still feeling like a stormtossed island all the times.
      I'm proud of both my parents for different reasons - they didn't do everything wrong - but the biggest problems I see in young families today is about the same as it always was: not enough leadership by parents.
      I think you're right about money. Doesn't it always go out too easy and come in too scantly? Also I think schools are terribly too expensive for lots of people that end up paying for the schooling but don't often enough end up being able to make a career for themselves.
      Seems to me we need to treat each other better, as a species.
      P.S. I responded to your comment because it struck a chord in me. I got both types of dads that you described but it had a destabilizing effect in my life.
      Well here's to better times; gods help us all, friend. 🍀🥂👓

      As a society, we can't afford to live in a one-income home. It is what it is. But if a child has loving parents, it'll all work out. I had a stay at home mom, but she never really wanted to be a mom. It's not all it's cracked up to be.

    • @CooperMarketingUnlimited
      @CooperMarketingUnlimited Před 2 měsíci

      @YaWantTaters
      I can relate to that as well. My parents struggled so much that I became an interim parent to my younger brothers by the age of 8. By 16, I was more of a father to them than their own dad. My bio dad was a terrible alcoholic and addict who left when I was 1. I had to grow up too fast, and it messed me up. I didn't realize how much it had screwed with me until I started falling apart mentally around the age of 30. Now, at 38, I'm finally getting myself together. I say this to make the case that your entire life will be affected by your childhood. They say that your first 7 years of life will dictate who you are for the rest of your life. I was raised by Gen-X parents and Boomer grandparents. They had very different opinions on parenting, but they both did damage in their own way. Of course, there were benefits from each. My family was always loving, and I never felt like I wasn't loved, so long as I was useful. The disfunction and constant fear left me anxious and afraid of life. By 6, I had become convinced that I was only loved as long I was valuable to my family. It led to low self esteem and feeling worthless for the rest of my life. All of that being in the past, all I can do moving forward is try to do better with my own kids. So far, I think I am doing better. My kids are kids, not tiny adults that have the responsibility of picking up the slack for their parents. My teenage son is a well-rounded, normal kid who is relatively happy. (As happy as a teenage boy gets, anyway). My daughter is 6, and she's a super happy girl who has had a very pleasant life thus far. If I can keep it up for another year, she should do pretty well in life. The biggest difference between my childhood and theirs is the number of kids we have. I have 2 children who are 9 years apart. That allowed us to give each of them lots of attention in their childhood. My parents had 5 kids while making minimum wage. That's a recipe for a stressful and difficult upbringing. All we can do is try our best with the cards we're dealt, but we have to remember that our behavior is permanently molding our children. Anyway, enough ranting. Thanks for your comment.

    I'm in Healthcare. The greed pimps fucked up that institution. What a nightmare for patients to navigate. Even as an employee, policies seem to be written in easily manipulated language.
    Welcome to Kafka Health. Your next appointment with a specialist is somewhere within this labyrinth. Have your credit card and insurance ready. Hobble on in. Arrive 15 mins early to check in so you can wait for 30 minutes to have the specialist order a test that is 3 months out, because of this, ERs have essentially turned into walk in clinics, and urgent cares seem to be just a place that can't do anything, but they'll collect a copay for telling you that they don't have the necessary diagnostic equipment to do a proper workup, so we recommend going to er.

    Animal husbandry can be brutal. Dogs that kill chickens are put down or shot. Once they get the taste of blood the dog is spoiled. I think it stems from neglect to begin with. You have to train your dog to be around other animals at a very young age. Dogs have to be introduced to other dogs, chickens, goats, cats and horses- and children. The owner must be present in order to be a master. This is something you probably learn from your father as a young child. It's a tough lesson. I hated it. So I was vigilant. Thanks for the excellent rant cast Lewis.

    16:30 - I will second all of those comments about Japan. It's a practical utopia compared to the US. If you ask someone for directions, they are likely to take time out of their day to DRIVE YOU to where you want to go. "Southern hospitality" seems like a kick in the dick compared to how hospitable the Japanese are - even to "gaijin". We had a Marine lose their wallet at the train station, return the following day, and it was still there with everything intact. People just don't touch shit that doesn't belong to them in Japan. There is practically no trash/litter. I was on a UDP deployment to Iwakuni for six months. If I could afford to, I'd return, and never think about the US again.

    I'd like to add a thought on that last note about the teachers bit. I find it ever so funny (and stupid) that the same people who hate the idea that teachers make a decent wage are the same ones who throw the biggest tantrum over a single day that maybe they'd have to pick up their kids early or they can't take them to the school because of some emergency. If their kids are such a joy to have around, what does that say about the parents hating the idea that they have to watch the kid a little more?
    This is especially notable at a time where teachers have to fight a battle that they never asked for (like our medical professionals did during COVID). This battle being something that other people came up with because they just wanted to, like the useless pricks they are. These parents are far more childish than their stupid kids are. Maybe that's why they hate the idea of spending a little more time with them. They serve as a reflection of the parents and how no one likes to be around them. To no fault of the child if that's the case, but those kids need better role models in their lives than their useless parents.
