I thought that they would simply show Ellen as gay and dating women and the human problems THEY have just like Straights have but they chose to lecture us instead. It is exceptionally well executed. It's endearing, heart wrenching, and comedic all at once. That's got to be a hard balance to achieve but it's pulled it off. You laugh at the end because by the time the joke hits you feel it's okay to laugh...she's pulled you through the thickets already.
i was 9 when this happened, 9 or 10. and her Time magazine cover was EVERYWHERE. there was no sheltering me from it, no matter how the parents tried. I would not have come out, nine years later, without her. i certainly wouldn't have had the courage to stick by it when my parents told me i was going to hell without ellen.

That was very brave of her to come out like that. It made it far easier for me to come out about two years ago. She helped me before I even knew it and I am very grateful to her for putting herself out there like that when the world was far more homophobic than it is today.
I'm 23 and I got outed two weeks ago. That night I watched this episode for the first time knowing that Ellen probably felt 100 times worse and 100 times more scared than I did. I'm still going through a cycle of emotions, but if it got better for her, it will get better for me.

I miss this Ellen, before talk show fame got to her head. I was only about 8 when this episode originally aired, I was completely oblivious to all the stuff on TV that talked about it, like Oprah and Rosie O’Donnell and Entertainment Tonight. I had no idea what “gay” was. She had balls to do this in 1997. Screw ABC for losing faith in her after this season. This episode was amazingly well done and I loved it.
The funny thing is now she is as big as Oprah is in her talk show. 20 years ago, she literally had the Scarlet Letter and no would really hire her to do things. Coming from being a stand up comic and starting from the bottom and then having it all taken away. Luckily, American culture changed and Ellen started climbing up the ladder again. Now she can do anything in the entertainment business with her talk show, game show, commercials, anything she wants she can do.
Agree to disagree. People should 100% be able to love who they love, and screw people that say different. But in a perfect world it wouldn’t warrant it being a big deal, it would just be accepted.

Doesn't negate the fact that this was one of the most important moments of history for our community.

I remember when this episode aired, as things got going the local news cut in for a severe weather bulletin, luckily there was another ABC station I could get in, so I only missed a couple minutes. I've since seem this episode multiple times. On a personal note, this was so me when I was in my late 20s and seeing this helped me through my own process.
