      I agree with this though I think it definitely could have been worded far better because I can see how the reporter could take offense to hearing that. If I were reviewing this case I'd just tell the officer to utilize better words when having an interaction. For example, could have said "Hey man, spread the word around that this guy has been calling a lot and the city has been kind of coming down on him as of late so he is kind of ramping things up to avoid dealing with all of that ya know? So I don't want you to get the short-end so just go around and let everyone know.". Something like that, I know the officer had good intentions and was acting chill as sort of de-escalation that will help him both now and any future interaction he may possibly have with the group down the line.

    No, not rude at all. Using a calm voice and demeanor, this LEO stated facts to the subject. Even asked him to spread the word in the community about not coming to the location. While people in general don't like being referred to as an arsehole, it is what it is!

      @EveryoneKnowsItsWendy Před 2 měsíci +5

      @judystine7901 To clarify, no one's calling the owner an a-hole. The LEO stated he was becoming one. My saying "it is what it is" simply means I'd probably become one as well if I were the owner and dealing with the same. Homelessness is a much bigger issue outside of a police force. @@EveryoneKnowsItsWendy Let me get this straight. The officer wasn’t being rude, he did not refer to the owner as an asshole only that he was becoming one? Okay, that’s an opinion that should have been kept to himself in his official capacity. He was there to perform his duty to remove someone who was trespassing on private property, he has no dog in this fight. He should have been there as a neutral party to the situation and simply done his job, no opinions required. And by you saying, “it is what it is” you indicated that you see the owner as an asshole and just agreed that the officer did refer to him as an asshole. The owner is not responsible for the homeless population. I’m sorry that man is homeless, but if he were to get hurt on that property just who do you think he’s going to look to for compensation?

      100% incorrect unless you want to pay his fines to the city.....he pays taxes to have police deal with trespassers and junkies on his property he does not only pay taxes to have the city get after him about the condition of his property while the police call him an inappropriate name to someone that is on the property creating an issue

    Sounds like the best thing that could be said!! The owner is being forced to call so he doesn't find himself in trouble with the city. The Officer lets the guy know that the owner has no choice but to take action, that being said hopefully there's no retaliation from the homeless man or others if they know what position the owner is being forced into...

    Speaking as a Senior Officer / fill-in Supervisor and FTO here in Texas that covers a wide area from the ghettos and hoods out to the hills and woods, here is my $0.02:
    I think referring to him / his actions as becoming an "ahole" was probably not the wisest choice of words to communicate the point and I can understand that in his shoes I could find offence at being referred to as an ahole, especially for something Im being forced to do by the city just to keep myself out of a jam (though going so far as to say "I dont think the police are on my side" from this interaction is being a drama queen through the roof, no question).
    I wouldnt say rude, and caller is being petty by filing an official complaint and crying about it to the level he is, but yeah I know Ive ended up wording things poorly in the moment on plenty of calls myself and upon reflection think "That could have been taken poorly, probably shouldnt have said it like that" and I feel this is one of those moments.
    Happens to the best of us, especially in this era where Officers are expected to behave like a retail store employee whose customer satisfaction is the number one priority and everyone is so easily offended by even inoffensive things.
    So I understand the reason for saying what you said (we all know street folk gossip like anyone else and your tired of deviating from patrol functions to play private security for one particular building over and over), but while caller is taking it way too far I do at least see reason to find offence (however minor). You are a great Officer who has the utmost respect for the citizens of your community, so I know this isnt even worth being called a teachable moment to do better. I say it was a small verbal misstep that likely wouldnt happen again anyway regardless of if a complaint got filed or not.

    It seemed to me that you were explaining why the owner's hands were tied and had to call the police...even explaining that the guy is being pressured into being an "Asshole". I think the owner is taking it the wrong way and doesn't like the "asshole" reference.

    I think the officer was just trying to put it on the guy's "level" so to speak, when referring to the owner as that term. I didn't take it as the officer was actually claiming the owner was an asshole. He was trying to put it in relatable jargon with the trespasser. It's not hard to see what this verbal interaction was about and why that word was used. In fact, I think the cop handled it very well and very professionally.

    What a karen. The officer wasn't rude at all.... He's simply saying it like it is. Maybe the officer could've said "he's having to become an masshole" but still even without adding one single word it's what he meant. The owner is too thinned skinned if that upsets him to the point of filing a complaint.....

  • @EllEss331
    @EllEss331 Před měsícem

    The officer said, "So, in order for him to avoid getting in trouble, he's becoming an asshole."
    Of course it's rude and disrespectful towards the property owner to say he's becoming an asshole. The cop should have used different words to describe the property owner like, he has to become more strict or more concerned or more on top of the situation... If I was the property owner, I'd be upset to hear the cop describe my behavior as "becoming an asshole".

    The property owner is becoming an asshole? Because he doesn't want degenerate filth on his property littering, which he's being penalized for.... That makes a lot of sense. How about do your job, just enforce the law, and keep people off his property. I'd refrain from making those comments in the future.

    At this point it's up to the building owner to resolve the problem by installing a fence, hiring his own security or changing locations. I understand his frustration, but CPD can't be there 24/7 and should not be expected to be. The area in general attracts transient people, the building looks abandoned, there's no fence and there's no sign made that will keep people away.
    As for the becoming an As...ole comment... I don't see a problem with an officer using a little colorful language when talking to street level people. It's unfortunate this comment was picked up and called in making it necessary to address. As I thought the guy hanging around the building did not make the complaint and had nothing to do with the CPRB finding.
    Not sure what else to say about it.........
    Officer Ben thanks for posting the video.........

    No… the Cop wasn’t being rude at all. He was just handling the situation. And he was just throwing blame on the owner so he, the Cop, doesn’t look like the jerk…. And I would say that’s a good way to de-escalate the situation.
    And I’m sure the owner is tired of all the homeless people hanging around his building causing issues. I just read about 102-year-old guy online…. in a wheelchair that is going to be fine because people keep spraying graffiti on his building and he’s not covering it up enough for the city. So yeah, the owners of properties are getting tired of being taken advantage of.
