      +Gershon Dharmanandan You have to look closely at the footage. When you use hand held gimbals when your walking, you will see the camera bob up and down as you walk. From what I have been reading with the the Z Axis arm, that will eliminate any of that up and down movement.

    • @Gershy13
      @Gershy13 Před 8 lety +10

      Chuck Purnell I was looking pretty closely, and its not a massive difference... the walking motion was smooth... so it was fine...

    A better comparison would be to use the normal walk, not the "stealth" walk. This way, the difference would be more obvious. As already noticed, almost no difference in left and right pane of your test ;-)

    • @TomsTechTime
      @TomsTechTime  Před 8 lety +1

      +Igor Bujanović I can really see the difference. It's a big deal. But on the other hand one could say, that it's possible to save money by walking correctly. But I wouldn't want to miss mine as I think it's the best accessory for the Osmo so far. Stay tuned and thanks for the feedback!

    •  Před 8 lety +4

      Don't get me wrong, I have Osmo and Z-axis ;-) When showing the difference, you should augment the benefit, not killing yourself to diminish it... ;-)

    • @BlueMantleFilms
      @BlueMantleFilms Před 8 lety +4

      @Igor Bujanovic Totally disagree with this. That's like saying "Let's compare Glidecam models by having a professional use one and a hobbyist use the other." Any time a comparison is done you want the products being compared to be used as best as they can be used, so you can really see the differences...even if those differences happen to be subtle.

      I can see a difference, although not an insane big difference (because the osmo itself is pretty good with "ninja" walk) and I can agree on both. A test walking normal would be good to show how well it removes it, basically showing that you don't have to waste energy on ninja walking and another test with both used at their best (ninja walk both with and without the z-axis) to see if it's worth buying if you are comfortable walking ninja :D

    I picked up the z-axis stabilizer when it was released and now all my osmo footage is done with it. Game changer. I’ve also added similar z-axis handles to larger rigs (several brands out now). Gimbals are very limited without this addition.

    Some tips for people who want to get this or new own:
    1. Yes, do loosen up the spring bit more for the z axis to bounce more, if your spring is too hard or straight, the z axis will actually make your footage wobble.
    2. I do not recommend use it for small movement or indoor , because the z axis is best for larger movement like walking or running, small movements will actually makes it wobble too.

    6 yrs later, 2022. Just discovered this kit and it is VERY INEXPENSIVE now used. I have 2. Z axis, full gimbal and the 1inch sensor combined with tuning and PID settings for the gimbal, audio gain,... this is a VERY nice piece of equipment. But since it's now so cheap, I am gonna fly one on a drone. First one was $150, second one was $40, Zaxis was $60. I sold my DSLR Canon t5i. Loose megapixels, but I'm after video first.

      The Z arm is actually intended for mounting on vehicles, NOT for walking along the city.. Tom has really reviewed this product incorrectly, as he hasn't reviewed it in what it was intended for... Put it on a vehicle then take it for a drive, thats where you will see the difference. He talks WAY too fast too, and sick of CZcamsrs asking for financial help!

    I will say this. The difference is negligible at best. Mechanical with manual adjustment for the spring. In watching people talk about this I have noticed extreme camera bob with them standing there just holding it, tells me this thing is likely very finicky at best, and may actually cause some people more issues than it is worth.

  • @editboy23

  • @stonekdotcom

    If I run, stabilization is okay but if I walk, many times vertical movement is similar as if I don't use z- axis extension.
    It seems like my walk (my hand) cadence makes the spring to reach the resonance frecuency so the camera Z amplitude is larger than my hand's.
    Shorter steps help but it isn't comfortable.
    What do you suggest?
    Thanks

  • @onnowesterman4825

    I tested this combi this day. The 4th axis I had just like you Tom but when filming I saw a little bop when checking the video however if I put the 4th axis in horizontal you know handle and axis straight than I could walk and I cannot see any bop movement. So it for now good to know to hold it that way to have the best results. I remember from a demo video that this was already mentioned, and yes clearly that worked. Now still have to figure out by adjusting to get it right in the normal position. Thnx for helping me on my way.

    I shoot video at a night club in Seattle with a DJI OSMO and I just tried out the Z axis attached recently and it somewhat helped in certain angles but looks like I'm not going to use it again at the club since I need my osmo to be more light weight since I already have the extension arm with universal with the manfrotto lumie led light and phone mount. It really did help and got rid of the up and dance bounce so everything was more smooth.

    I see a slight difference where without the z-axis there's a very small wiggling in the center of the footage which highly noticeable at 4:18, which resembles an FPS shooter.
    For consumer level this should not be a problem, but for high end production (or perhaps if you have extra dollars laying around), I think you might need the z-axis.

    Steadycams work because the payload is very heavy. When you are standing there talking the X3 is bouncing up and down by several inches. I think the arm needs some damping and more weight on the camera. Of course, more weight means a stronger spring and the whole thing is then heavier. Alternatively an active vertical dampening system could be added with a lot of work.

    • @RSBSTEADICAM
      @RSBSTEADICAM Před 8 lety +1

      Check your spelling there Robert as there is no "y" there... actually Steadicam works based on Hook's law and balance in an analog world which is what the arm is doing... in this case the spring rate could probably use further tuning as it might be a bit too stiff for the payload resulting in the "bounce" (oscillation) you are seeing...

    I like that DJI is addressing vertical stabilization. But, despite the reviewer gushing over it like a fanboy, the cost is way too high for what it is. There are no electronics which means that the only thing powering this device is a spring. Not unlike a miniature version of an articulating desk lamp. Where is the real cost? The redundant phone mount? Why is that piece even necessary?
    I would prefer to see optical image stabilization in future cameras which should help with the veritical (and horizontal) shake without the added bulk.
    One trick I've found in using my Feiyu G4S is to hold the gimbal horizontally or at an angle instead of straight up and down. This has the effect of translating up and down movements of your arm into a rolling pitch action which the gimbal can stabilize.

    • @RSBSTEADICAM
      @RSBSTEADICAM Před 8 lety

      Dude, I understand the desire but you have to realize that with these "cheap" solutions you just can't "over build" the neighborhood... the audio issue has been solved with a seperate cable assembly but at some point you have to just shoot with a "double system" though I have the same issue wanting to pack too much on things... as it is I use a 4K Sony camera on the Beholder with 2 wireless microphone receivers... got to know when to call it quits and shoot with multiple signal generating devices...

    • @TomsDIY1
      @TomsDIY1 Před 8 lety

      $600 isn't exactly a "cheap" solution. A good microphone/input and a connection that doesn't go bad isn't over building. Its building something with quality.
      Take GoPros for example they aren't meant to be A cameras at all but if needed you can get decent audio out of them. Ill have to look up the separate cable assembly.
      I shoot with a lot of different cameras including the Sony 4k Cams but each of my cameras has a specific roll in the videos i make.
      For vlogging this thing isn't good (yet). Besides the mic issue and connection issues it takes to long to set up. By the time you get it out turn it on get the wifi connected to the phone and frame the shot you missed it.
      If i was shooting a wedding or event and had multi cam the osmo could work as a B cam. I highly doubt DJI's average customer is doing that type of production.

As far as your assessment of audio cables and connectors they do degrade and a ton of microphone cables should be thrown out for sure... I'm not sure what the rest of your note was about since it seemed like an exact recitation of what I wrote...

    You're a good operator (except for the base horizon line) so the "z" axis issue is very minor to begin with for you... this might be good for my neighbor upstairs that walks like Frankenstein and his leaden boots... a very interesting solution to the Z axis issue with servo devices... kinda funny a miniature Steadicam arm on the device... sort of 1975 meets 2016... amazing that people complain about "stiff knobs" as it sure beats having full sized sets of allen keys stashed everywhere in my life with... the "new" generation just has no idea... nice video... just one note: you cannot be both over and out... you can be over or you can be out... right up there with "Tarmac" as being dumb terms that are wrong...

    Tom, very nice review. Not even DJI talk much about HOW to use the device. Still, I am curious if you can talk more about what kinds of walking styles work? For example, without the z-axis people would say they had to carefully walk. Are you doing anything different than a normal gate? I ask because my z-axis is not as steady as your shots.

    No difference. You don't need spend your money on extra accessories for your Osmo, you can shoot good videos with just the Osmo as it comes and if you know how to edit them, even better

      Tom's Tech Time that's what I thought. You should show the difference between a regular Joe walk with and without the z axis. To show the extremes
