- Today in the first of many transmissions elucidating the workings of the Chapters of Adeptus Astartes, we chronicle the deeds, functions and structure of the Blood Angels.
From their deployment during the Unification Wars, their adoption by their Primarch Sanguinius and beyond.
Savage yet noble warriors of Baal and Terra, the 9th Legion would prove crucial to the continued survival of the Imperium and garner an legendary status amongst both the Space Marine Chapters and the populace of Humanity.

The black rage was an amazing turning point in the battle for Terra. I laughed so hard when I read the account of the angels going totally psycho and butchering all chaos. Carved a path through chaos like nothing.

I discovered Warhammer when I was 12, and I found the Blood Angels, im now 30 years old. They are and always will be my favourite Chapter.
Ever since Abnetts arc with Rafen and His brother they have been my favorite to read

Well met, brother of the 9th. I, too, have been a fan of the Blood Angels since 1990
Doused in agony but ever flickering with hope. The sons of the angel have been one of the mightiest, as well as perilous instruments of war by the Imperium of Man.
The love the legion had for their Primarch is just so beautiful to me. They lamented his death so deeply that even ten thousand years later, they were willing to lay down their lives just to protect his mortal remains. No other primarch, not even Guilliman, could command such loyalty from his sons. For the other legions, it was duty that bound them to their fathers, but for the Blood Angels, it’s love. Pure, unfaltering love.
It really is. I really wish GW would buckle down and really push out lore more frequently about all legions. There are many who are dusty now 😂 lately though it’s been a blood angels high cus of Dante but the Lion being back is crazy
Actually the most detailed run down of the 9th legion. Even with it's short length, this is actually more in depth then some hour long lore vids I've seen. 👍

Definitely my favorite loyalist legion. They have the best overall aesthetics in my opinion, not to mention their Primarch was the most badass and honorable of them all (again, just my opinion.)

If the Blood Angels are “space vampires” then what about the Night Lords? They also definitely have a vampire-ish thing going on.
I spent a lot of time thinking about why I felt so drawn to the Blood Angels. I think when you get down to it, it’s that they suffer. They wrestle with so much anger, so much pain, and so much darkness, yet they don’t hide that part of themselves. They control it through discipline. And that is worthy of respect.
Or maybe it’s just the Catholic in me.
Sanguinus is an example of a person who rises above struggles but remaining true to what is right and who they are.

Blood Angels my new favorite chapter. Huge space marines that loves bloodshed being taught by the emperor to make paintings, poetry, and other crafts cracked me up
The thing I really love about the pre primarch lore for the 9th legion is that we learn that part of what makes them special is that they can recruit from the mutant dregs of humanity!! This crucial piece of lore gives us a reason why the legion suffers from it's 'curse'. Their ability to recruit rapidly and easily from the lowest 'quality' of recruits comes at a cost. The fact that they require regular 'donations' of blood to maintain genetic stability implies to me that Sanguinius' geneseed is very unique compared to the average legion. Instead of being designed for stability and compliance like say the Ultramarines, The Dark Angels, or the Iron Warriors. The Blood Angels appear to be some kind of living bio-weapon.
I've always thought of the Blood Angels as a legion designed for the 'End Times'. When the galaxy is consumed by the Warp when The Emperor finally ascends to true god hood. The Angels of the Blood will be amongst those legions that also transform and ascend into their 'true' form. Living flesh deamons designed to protect humanity from the mutants and heretics of chaos. Just as the Space Wolves can transform into the Wulfen in the presence of chaos, and Alpha Legionnaires can drink the blood of their Primarch to become avatars of their father. So too do the Blood Angels provide The Emperor and Humanity with tools in the tool box to deal with any situation. I also suspect that the Salamanders are part of this cadre. We know at least one of their successor chapters has the capacity to grown weaponised blade horns from their forearms and foreheads. Combined with their very unique skin tone and fire black eyes, they surely have some kind of hidden purpose. The Sallies are also part of the "tre-foil" of legions developed in secret. Alongside the wolves and the alpha legion.
To think he is so crazy strong, Sanguineous was able to rip the wing off of a bloodthirster with his free hand and while impaled on his sword, Sanguineous tore off the nails from Angron's head banishing him. Sanguineous was the most badass primarch......and that's what makes his death all the more sorrowful. Why did you have to fall to chaos Horus luprecal? You were his brother and closest friend..
Always had a soft spot for the Blood Angels, why? When I was a little kid, like 8-10 years old, I convinced my parents to take me into this cool-looking shop called "Games Workshop" near my hometown's movie theater. I had no idea what I was looking at, and I remember the people inside giving my parents odd looks, but I picked a pewter figure off a wall that looked cool to me and my parents bought it. That figure was a Blood Angels battle brother, I think his weapons were a sword and bolt pistol, and after my dad glued the parts together I remembered how cool it looked. Didn't find out what exactly it was until I did the deep dive in 2018-2019, but once I did I always thought of the Blood Angel as my first legion.

The Blood Angels Legion and current Chapter is a rise from horror monsters to pinnacles of a warrior and honor, not perfect but always striving to be better.
This was REALLY good As Blood Angel loyalist (but also like Space Wolfs) I learned much more from the last bit of how they paint their army and what are their specialty's are.
These guys are pretty much the reason I discovered Warhammer universe. Well, actually second thing I discovered; the first was actually khorne when I looked up blood god and he was the first thing I saw. After looking up blood god I got curious if there was something called blood angels, and there they were.

I love how the Emperor gave the space marines the ability to eat the brains of the fallen enemies to learn about them and at the same time anyone who does it is considered disgusting and near heretical.

I like the reversal of horus fighting sanguinius. Where sang went berserk after trying to confront horus slaying horus in the fight. Upon the Emperors arrival and sanguinius in his rage attacked the emperor, and through sangs psychic backlash and the emperor slaying sang created the black rage in all blood angels. The emperor not wanting to dishonor sanguinius let all know the sang was slain by horus and wrote the history as such.
It makes so much more sense right? I love the story of the lone loyal guardsman defending the emperor but the emperor hesitating to kill loyal son makes way more sense than needing one final human sacrifice to strike down his traitor offspring.
I hate this head-canon. It shits on Sanguinius's sacrifice.
Also don’t the Talons of Horus in 40k specifically have the psychic echo of the Slaying of Sanguinius attached to it? Also having the most iconic scene of the HH be false wouldn’t work imo.

The Blood Angels, one of my favorite legions. Who's primarch was taken in such cruel circumstances, this made me sad for them.
Don't know if this was mentioned already, but even the dreadnoughts still need blood. They let their servitors build openings to their sarcophagus into the hull so that the enemies blood can flow in.

Great video! Though the last quote was unusually bitter and resentful and not really fitting for the Blood Angels. While lore acurate, whining and bitching about Guilimans edicts is more fitting for the space wolves. Though the BA do have a few very ill tempered successor chapters, who enjoy whining and bitching as well. *cough* Flesh Tearers *cough*
