  • Today we elucidate the fall of the 8th Legion of the Adeptus Astartes: The Night Lords.
From the slums of Holy Terra to the unforgiving world of Nostramo, the 8th Legion would be comprised of the worst dregs of humanity.
Further descending into depravity and slaughter with the return of their Primarch: Konrad Curze, the Night Lords would forever be condemned to history of bloodshed and infamy...

@@mathiashansen9108 but also it kinda didn't work. Fear wasn't sustainable on Nostramo, his soliders got worse and worse in his absence. The problem with the nighhtlords is konrad is wrong, a world built in fear is an unsustainable one. He saw it in the faces of his own space marines he grew to resent and hate. He is wrong, it's not actually an effective way to build a world.
Now don't get me wrong, I love silliest as much as the next guy but burning villiages as a military is more destructive then flaying just a few of the world's leaders children in front of everyone. They are weirdly the least violent legions.

i think what makes the nightlords interesting, is the fact that they are evil murderers, they seem way more human than the other traitor legions. unlike the others who either don't care, love killing, or delude themselves into thinking they're somehow justified based on a 10,000 year long grudge, they know they're assholes. and they make no attempt to be anything else. they actually have a decent enough reason to feel betrayed unlike the others who still believe in Horus's lie. they were meant to be terror troops, yet they were scorned because they were too good at it. they don't deserve sympathy or anything, but i think it's the fact that they actively choose to be evil, is what gives them the ability to show, shocking amounts of kindness and even empathy and compassion once in a blue moon. looking at you Talos.
it's a weird dynamic. who's more evil? they guy who feels angry, bitter, and thus lashes out in evil ways while trying to justify it, or the guys who were made to be evil, know their evil, but will show empathy if so inclined.

The Emperor of Mankind created his Space Marines to conquer the Galaxy from the horrors of both Alien and Mankind, but he also realized that he could conquer from of these through a very primitive emotion, FEAR. The Night Lords were the Emperor weapon of Terror, where the Imperial Fists and Iron Warriors were to siege a planet, or to enemies who he wanted destroy with no trace of them he will send the Iron Hands and the World Eaters, but if he wants to send a message to his enemies he will send his monsters of the Night Lords to do the horrific deed. Perhaps if their Primarch was more sane and noble their fate and destiny could have been avoided, sadly that will not be the case as Conrad Cruze was a total monster who plunge his entire legion into infamy for their betrayal of the Emperor and his Imperium.

One of the functions of the Night Lords was to be the Emperor's assassins with Lord Kurze as the Emperor's Master Assassin and or the Master of Assassins. No Empire is sustained by timidity, sometimes blood must flow, like a small brook or as a raging river, either way blood will flow when the Emperor issues the Night Lords forth. This is my favorite legion for many reason, but I guess it's mostly because they're really tragic in a way.
The 8th Legion truly never stood a chance, their Primarch tortured with an ability to ONLY see the worst possible ending for himself which is his death by his father was slowly being driven insane with the idea he lacked an autonomy. His brothers despised him his planet despised him, but his Legion despite their scruples hung on and tried to remain loyal to the imperium. A legion that was the dredges of their society even before their Primarch's home planet started sending them nothing but rapist and murders exclusively they were first and foremost murders who was using their trade to do something they assumed was for the greater good.
Listening to the audiobooks for this legion its just so sad because I genuinely can't really see an ending where they wouldn't remain what they are in the current setting.

Because the Wolves kill cleanly, and we do not. They also kill quickly, and we have never done that, either. They fight, they win, and they stalk back to their ships with their tails held high. If they were ever ordered to destroy another Legion, they would do it by hurling warrior against warrior, seeking to grind their enemies down with the admirable delusions of the 'noble savage'. If we were ever ordered to assault another Legion, we would virus bomb their recruitment worlds; slaughter their serfs and slaves; poison their gene-seed repositories and spend the next dozen decades watching them die slow, humiliating deaths. Night after night, raid after raid, we'd overwhelm stragglers from their fleets and bleach their skulls to hang from our armour, until none remained. But that isn't the quick execution the Emperor needs, is it? The Wolves go for the throat. We go for the eyes. Then the tongue. Then the hands. Then the feet. Then we skin the crippled remains, and offer it up as an example to any still bearing witness. The Wolves were warriors before they became soldiers. We were murderers first, last, and always!

I find it slightly amusing but ironic that words like discipline, Doctrine, disciple, tactics, communication, and of course TRUSTED - appear in this video. It's Great storytelling; I'm not sure if that was intentional or not but that kind of language in itself as it is attached to the 8th Legion just shines a Glaring Light on the hellish atmosphere of 40k. To think your planet will receive reinforcements, only for it to be 8th Legion who may or may not kill you anyway out amusement, the evasion of punishment or simply just to make a example of you to reinforce compliance, is insane.
"The nightlords were murderer, first and foremost. It is all the hae ever known."

They were arguably the most brutal and vicious before any legions turned on humanity, but like the Alpha Legion and Iron Warriors they didn't dive into slavery to Chaos, either as a chosen of one god or to them all. So while they were the most evil beforehand, and despite being made up of murderous bastards, they're quite far from the worst of it.

I want it to be noted: it was never technically declared that the assassin killed Conrad curze. But merely implied. The way the story goes it's almost like the writers wanted that to be open-ended and left to interpretation whether he was assassinated or he faked his own death and survived to escape, to, disappear?.
Lot of primarks that survive tend to disappear. On top which they never found Conrad curze body.

Night lords and Curze became some of my favorites very quickly.
They occupy an extreme niche in the legions and imperium... Especially during the great crusade and the following horus heresy.
The night lords are designed for terror warfare, they can use the most ruthless methods to bring worlds to heel, saving more life than spending them, using extreme pain as payment.
Morally speaking, it is wrong on all accounts, because killing your enemies is more of a mercy than torturing some, even some that may be innocent...It would be fair to kill as fast as possible, all those that need to die than it is to torture many that are more or less innocent. BUT, in the great crusade, it is useful. Its been useful in real history... Dracula, besieged by the turks, managed to save his lands on several occassions using great scare tactics... Poisoning his own water supplies and raiding his own villages and eventually impalement... Turkish men became so scared of what they saw they retreated out of fear of dying horribly... Other Primarchs looked down upon the nighlord methods, especially Dorn, whom even argued with Curze and nearly got killed by the night haunter. BUT, in essence, ALL astartes are scary to humans, especially when they come to conquer your world to force you into the embrace of the Imperium. Imperial fists would have considered just as monstrous as daemons, nightlords, orks, by those that were opposed by the imperial fists, or ANY and ALL space marine legions and now chapters... And this is where Curze is THE MOST HONEST about the objective truth of reality and humanity. He and the nightlords are as all space marines and primarchs are to the core. Super human weapons of utter terrible power... Many worlds being conquered by the legions would call them all monsters... When the Luna wolves crack open fortresses and purge planets of resistance, those that stood in their way would have been as afraid as they would have been of curze. When Horus was nearly slain, the Luna wolves carried Horus back to their flagship, whilst onboard their flagship, the spacemarines, the most noble of them all, carrying Horus, crushed, wounded and even killed so many of the humans onboard their flagship, pushing them aside and walking over them without regard to their life. Space marines are often so high and noble, extreme, hard, some are more heroic than others, but like Gavriel Loken discovered for himself, they are nothing but barbarians.
    - I do not yet know all the lore, but it seems strange to me that, even after the death of Konrad Curze, the nightlords would remain enemy to the Imperium and truly became that which they deplored. They become mercenaries and torturers of people... Curze, let himself die because he saw the irony of being what he was...The entire purpose of the Nighthaunter was to punish the guilty so cruelly that you create paradise through fear...Even if the crime was insignificant, That is the Nighthaunter's identity to make an entire planet submit through fear of the consequences...Terror was a means to a great end, a great goal to save all of humanity. That was the purpose of the emperor, to save all of mankind and Konrad holds DNA from the Emperor, so those characteristics, ideals, truths, believes, ruthlessness and being terror incarnate is within the Emperor of mankind... It has always been within mankind...It would seem more logical to me that the nighlords would have gone completely isolated, not aligned with anyone, because that position is more in line with being the judges and punishers over what they survey. I understand during the heresy, Konrad aligned with Horus but Konrad had his own reasons for doing that, He found little aid from the loyal primarchs, he felt betrayed by Fulgrim to whom he entrusted his visions of the future. And when he was called back to terra he felt that they were trying to bring down his legion, at the same time which, Nostrama, without the nighthaunter and nightlords to rule them, returned to lawlessness, for which it was destroyed by Konrad. It was justice even though billions died... At which point, Konrad had already chosen to resist the emperor's orders because he questioned the emperor for his actions... Unlike Horus who saw a future wherein the emperor is worshipped like a god and he himself was written out of history. You might say the nightlords are black and white, but they are more like twilight, They corolate between the good and evil and accept the darkness of the truth, And that for their to be an Imperium ruled galaxy, humanity must suffer and be beaten into submission. "All empires are forged through blood. " Konrad Curze when he argued his case against Dorn after the nightlords and Imperial fists conquered a planet together.
