- Today we shall elucidate the 1st Legion of the Adeptus Astartes: The Dark Angels.
Knights of Caliban and the first Legion to wage war across the stars, the Dark Angels would be among the mightiest of all Legions.
Unrelenting in their pursuit of their Fallen brothers, the Dark Angels though bereft of their Primarch and homeworld would nonetheless slay the enemies of His Impeirum in the name of the Lion with righteous vengeance.

My favorite and funniest lore about the Dark Angel is when Azrael, the supreme grand master of the Dark Angel, almost blow up Guilliman and his flagship because of his paranoia.
Roblox Gingerbread is a bit of a control freak, I don't blame Azrael for being a bit paranoid.

Literally the scene is that Macragge's Honour shows up and Azrael is like "OH SHIT GUILLIMAN IS BACK AND KNOWS ABOUT THE FALLEN, HE'S COME TO KILL US ALL" and Guilliman is just like "You Dark Angels are doing great, here's some Primaris reinforcements and how to make your own, good luck"

There was a quote that roughly said Russ is a man that pretends to be a beast, and the Lion is a beast that pretends to be a man.
They are all unique. Sanguinius, the literal angel beloved by all. Magnus, who is literally red. Logar... a worshipper. Vulkan, a giant the size of a mini titan. Horus, aka doctor Phil. Lemun Russ, the street fighter. Gulliman, the college professor. Fullgrim, the most beautiful man ever to exist. Angron, Anger incarnate. etc

If Henry Cavill needs a narrator for his 40k live-action series im utmost dissapointed if you are not asked. Absolutely brilliant storytelling.
One of the best summaries of Dark Angels lore I have heard in over 20 years. I didn't want it to end.

As the lion meets the dark angels of now and then,he sees luther,bound,in front. The lions instincts know something must be done. Luthers face betrays no emotion. Only closing his eyes...accepting death. Taking the lion sword remade,he looked at the fallen angels,and see they are ready to fight,while the unforgiven watch in anticipation. It was then the lion sword was brought down. Shoved into the rock and adressed the legion.
"No more."
Azrael and all the unforgiven fell silent as the lion began to speak.
"I have realized the concequences of my actions. When i 1st took command of the 1st legion,i strove to ensure all who follow me shall be noble,honorable and just. Some of you, both from those days and now followed my legacy."
As he looked at the unforgiven,the lion continued.
"But many have failed. We have allowed anger,self hatred and madness rule us for milenia too long. I say to all dark angels of this great legion. Will you stand with me once more,or does the past blind you to now. And the 1st that shall follow me..."
Luther was freed from his bonds. The ancient knight shed tears of remorse. The dark angels in unison shouted the emporors glory and luther looked at the primarch.
"Im surprised your heart has changed..." Spoke the mournful man.
The lion put a hand to luther,and for the 1st time,smiled.
"Your the one who opened my eyes luther. Will you still follow me even after all thats happened?"
Luther showed his blade and nodded grimly.
"On this day...we shall find redemption. For ourselves...and our legion"
The primarch nodded.
"Indeed. ...but there is much...much work to be done"
DAMN! That really drew me in. Hoping against hope that ,that was to be. ....But no! This IS the grim darkness of the future, where there is only war......

Reaching for his homing beacon he voxed the fleet above to fire on his position.

"Exterminatus!"
They were first of the Emperor Legions and their honors and glories are seen as example of how any Space Marine should conduct themselves in their pursuit of war.
Lion would have challenged Gulliman on the codex (if had been around) sword and shield/Lion and Dorne.
@@ezekiel8236 He might have relented as he did with the Imperium Secundus, seeing the logic of rebuilding the Imperium in case Terra was destroyed.
View all brothers as possible traitors? Investigate them all with inquisition like fervor, kill anyone who learns of their own secrets?
A book I have for the Dark Angels blew my mind: Luther tells his torturer that El'Johnson could have arrived on time, but he wanted to see who would win the battle for Terra. That book was my introduction to 40K, and that statement made me realize that there is so much more going on. Did Luther lie or was he telling the truth? Who knows, but it's an interesting aspect.
You are thinking of Astelan, not Luther. The book was Angels of Darkness, also you cannot believe anything Astelan ever says. I have no proof of this but I think he was like Calas Typhon or Erebus and was there to corrupt the DA.
He was misinformed. The Lion was there the entire time. He's the entire reason the Traitors no longer have a homeworld to return to. He's the entire reason Horus wanted to get to Terra immediately. He's the entire reason Sanguinius even made it to Terra in the first place.
And now luthor runs free on the request of Azrael to presumably gather many of the fallen who have remained loyal in their heart and soul so that with the coming return of the almighty lord of the first, the second tide to smash against the dark madness (first tide was guilliman) arrives in the force and effectivity it likes to, for he is the one who inherited both physically and conceptually the emperor's very own presence and will.
I have a feeling Luther will repent to the Lion with his dying breath. Maybe Angron will slay Luther … who knows, I have a feeling that those of the “Fallen” that stayed loyal to the Lion will come to him when they hear his voice.
@@Scout703 Or the other way around. It would be awesome to see a semimortal slap around another Primarch. Angron is pretty much a powerful Bloodthirster and with all the advantages of being a Demon Prince. There's also disadvantages like the necessity to be tethered to the Warp, and the vulnerability of being binded although. Luther was the greatest of his unaugmented human peers In cunning and marshall prowess, who later studied demonology and the weaknesses of his Primarch.
My favorite legion ! And perphaps soon, the second loyalist legion to recover their primarch in the 42nd millenium...

When The Lion wakes, will he laud he son's service with pride or condemn their actions as treachery? I can see either being applicable. That will be a busy day for The Remembrancer indeed.
When the lion wakes hes going to start screaming and throwing furniture when he finds out Guilliman did the one thing he promised he wouldn't do and that's take control of the Imperium. Maybe he will chill out when he finds out Dante is controlling a full half? More than likely he would see it as Robute trying to cover his own tracks. Chilling out and not being paranoid isn't one of Johnson's strong points.
I'm reading through The Horus Heresy and I have to say no one's fall to Chaos hit me as hard as Zahariel. I really loved his character and growth from his life on Caliban to becoming a Librarian of the Dark Angels. I understand his feelings and why he fell, but damn did it hurt
Descent of Angels and Fallen Angels were my intro to the glory of Warhammer almost 10 years ago now. I am right there with you on this.
@alexstan414 hell yeah! I figured of I read the first 20 or so HH books I'd find a Legion that stood put ND spoke to me. Halfway through Descent of Angels I was hooked on DA and The Order. I'm doing a successor chapter based on a group of loyal and traitor DA's that were lost in the Warp after the destruction of Caliban. The Knightly ascetic had me immediately.

@@zaneriva5903 See, I have to say I fell with Zahariel. I can't bring myself to look at the Dark Angels the same way. Not until The Lion: Son Of The Forest came out and made me feel much like his Risen. I don't want to spoil anything, but read/listen to that book of you haven't yet. Absolutely phenomenal character development and story progression.

Then u think I'm gonna skip to the Fall of the Dark Angels then The Lion. I've been good about reading in order but I've had enough spoiled that I wanna read all the DA stuff now

Amazing video and the Dark Angels Legion is so cool and hands down the most powerful Legion just before the Heresy and where even stronger before the Rangdan Xenocide.
Edit: Blood Angels, Dark Angels, and White Scars are my favorite Legions

@serronserron1320 in numbers but not strength as the 1st Legion had more Campaign wins rivaling Horus and in lore surpassing him when the Redacted ones were counted Then, the 1st also had the most powerful fleet as it contained 3 Gloriana class ships and DAOT weapons. Read the Lion Primarch novel for a hint at that power. They have enslaved Men of Iron for reference.
Edit: numbers wise the 1st was more numerous also till the Rangdan Xenocide where they lost 50,000 Astartes and its hinted that one of the missing Legions was destroyed by that war. Even after that, they were over 200,000 Astartes.

The dumbest continuous part of their story would be cartoon antics of trying to keep the secret of the Fallen. It gets repetitive and there is no way that the rest of the Galaxy like the Custodians don't know the truth.

@@dodge7729 Oh yeah Curze was incredibly calculated in how he doled out justice but he was also unfathomably brutal when delivering justice.
The Rock surviving makes no sense. The building didn't get destroyed when it should have been a high priority target? GTFOH with that. The damned building was made of stone, metal, and plasteel but held together by plot armor.
Pretty sure all the major strongholds have shields against orbital bombardment. I've always thought the surviving part of the Rock was the part that was within the shield both above and below the ground.
