That sounds cool, but Leman Russ was literally raised by wolves, wasn't he? And don't forget; he also killed dozens of grown men, warriors, with nothing but his bare hands...and he was just a child.

Lion was a great Primarch, but his sons, without his guidance, have become so petifull, more worry of their secret than the wellbeing of the Imperium far from what he wanted them to be.
I agree. It's a real shame they are less than a shadow of what they could have been with the Lion's leadership. It's one of the legions that seem to have inherited very little of their primarch's potential. Their current lore is almost comical with how narrow-sighted they have become.
You're right but at the same time that is what make the Dark Angels the Dark Angels. The concept of the Inner Circle, the hunt of the unforgiven, etc is what makes them absolutely different for other more vanilla legios. That is why they're my favourite faction in WH40K and what makes the Lion so interesting with the Lion and then the Dark Angels being a great example of a Knight of Infinite resignation and The Lion being the best example of that.
I believe Merir Astelan was onto something when he said that the Dark Angel's need for secrets stems directly from the Lion himself, from his gene seed directly. This is quite evident in how the Lion wages war against the Khrave, keeping everything a secret, even from his closest advisors. This is why the Fallen are so easily able to manipulate the Dark Angels of the 41st.
The writers of the original 40k lore based the legion on a poem written by English poet lionel johnson; The Dark Angel. Thus his name is a nod to the poet.

Considering how much language in the real world has evolved and drifted across history, it doesn't seem too far-fetched that in 20,000+ years of interstellar human diaspora it could happen. Admittedly, it does still come off as a bit goofy to present-day Westerners.
@drgonzo305 It's not. His first name is "Lion". His surname is El'Jonson. It's logical to assume that "El'" is a possessive indicator like "of" or "from". Assume then that "son" means, well, son, it's not a stretch to assume it's "Jon" that translates to "forest" or "woods" or something. So it basically reads as "Lion, of Forest: Son". Name, possessive, location/family, position. Sounds very "knightly". Like "DrGonzo El'CZcamscommenter".
