My First Space Marine - Trying to get a grip on Yellow - 40K Indomitus Imperial Fist Captain

- Stepping out of my comfort zone & painting my first ever Space Marine. I decided, as I so often preach, to paint something different and new to me. This is a mini I have never painted before and yellow is a colour that I often disregard - a learning experience. I really tried to do this miniature justice by giving it my best.
For those of you that are new to this channel.. welcome! And please, if you are after a straight forward A - Z tutorial of how to paint Imperial Fist's... well.. there is quite a lot of that around, so this one is a bit different. That said, there is a lot of tips and tricks here as well. If you have the patients. Stay Safe!

"Still trying to figure out why he's stuck all his receipts to his armor" got a good chuckle out of me.
:) The Stormcast kind of do it to, only they have more of the classic sheets of toilet paper roll accidentally stuck to the armour after visiting the privy..

I love how this isn't really a tutorial, but more of a story about the process! it's quite relaxing and entertaining!
Thanks Jess!

I don't know what was better, the video footage or listening to you narrate it. Well done, sir.
Well thank you Gregory, I appreciate it.
I agree. Sometimes I just like to listen.

Ha ha! "I'm not really comfortable with green.. so I wanted to give it a try". But seriously, thank you :)
He looks awesome! Thanks for your thoughts and humor while paining.
Honestly one my favorite captain models, the dead Necron base and the way he holds his shield makes his whole vibe that of a badass. And then in the colors of my favorite legion, makes me wanna buy the starter box just for him and paint him for my army (the other models are a nice added bonus lol).
The algorithms came up trumps with this one, as the owner of around 7000 points of 30k Imperial firsts my hat goes off to you for the quality of this miniature.
Well thanks Rob. If I would attempt to paint 7000 points in this manner... I don't think I would be doing anything else for the rest of my life 😂
@@52Miniatures None are to the standard of yours. Though it's nice to see you use a similar technique. I undercoat orange, then a few zenthinal spray of yellow. Then a heavy brown (oil based) wash over over, before a hour or two removing the wash with a cotton bud and white spirit, till I'm happy with the result. Even better is that it works (I think) for individual men and tanks (my Spartan is painted with the same method as my marines).
0:40 I'm so glad I'm not the only one who shaves that edge down.
👍👍
Edit: you really have no idea how privileged you are to just be able to go to a shop that has a display of indomitus like that. Really.
I'm privileged too, in that I can enjoy your videos, I'm sure there are some who cannot even do that. For that I am grateful. Thank you.
Oh! Edit2: prime/base coat pink to make your yellow. Goobertown Hobbies has a great vid about it.
Those edges round the base is devils spawn and should be shaved back to whatever level of hell they came from... I really don't like them :) And yes, the local shop is a wonderful place. I'm not visiting as often as I would like, times being as they are.. but places like this should be well looked after. Thank you for the tip on the yellow, I can see that a lot of people are working hard to get good yellow space dudes going.
I've got to say, I really do like the turquoise in the backpack vents, and the way it contrasts with the yellow. I might have to steal that...
Thanks Ian, please do!
Turquoise contrast with HIS yellow because he dis an orangish yellow and while the yellow complementary color is purple, the complementary color of orand is blue and turquoise has the green that contains yellow AND THE BLUE that is in green also and is also added to green (blue+yellow and blue + blue to have equal green and blue so like having 3 parts of blue and 1 part of yellow). So orange having blue as a complamentary color here we have a bluwish green which (if its exactly between blue and green) is 3x blue which is complementary of orange and 1x yellow which us the color of the armure a orange yellow so you have nearly complementary (yellowish orange complentary would be bluish purple, here we have bluish green) and the.liitle.bit.of yellow that diminish the contrast.
Holy shit, thats a gorgeous marine 😍
Thanks Dan!
This is my new favorite OSL method
I found out that a pink primer works wonders when painting yellow, it's so much easier
This I have heard a lot about. Also doing like a "magenta zenithal". with more pink / magenta in the recesses. Then airbrushing on the yellow.
This is true
A common thing with people is they tend to be different. The paradox is strong with this one🤣
Anyway, thanks for your insight, both philosophical and hobby wise.
Paradoxical insights :)
You are absolutely spot on with that reverse orange/yellow, the yellow parts pop out even more without going to the white, it's really impressive.
Thanks :) Seems to be a taste thing. Quite a few think this mini is to orange :)
Best Imperial Fist color on a model in my opinion, and it it true highlights in yellow just became white, thank you
Thanks Martin!
This is actually the best paint job I’ve seen on a miniature in my whole life! Thanks CZcams algorithms!
Wow C! Thanks! I appreciate it (and the algorithm :)
clicked on the painting, liked for the cat xD
Ha ha! Fair enough :)
If this is your first 40K mini....WOW Awesome done! Wonderful done with the yellow!!
Thanks! I appreciate it. I’ve painted an imperial guard, this was the first Marine :)
@@52Miniatures you're welcome and again wonderful done, great tips 👍
This turned out really well!
I remember my first Space Marine, it was also yellow. I was 14 years old and wet blending was something unattainable only seen in White Dwarf 'eavy metal pages. I remember the power sword had flames painted on it using glazes of red ink. It was my best painted mini. While showing my friend at the front door he was also impressed with the paint job. Several second past while he was turning the miniature around to look from different angles when it slipped from his hand and fell to the concrete floor flattening the nose on the miniature, it was one of the now out of production lead variants. I wish I had kept hold of more of my miniatures from that era, knowing that I would come back to the hobby one day and have to re-buy them at extortionate prices if I wanted to paint them again!
What a story! And I'm kind of sorry for your friend, that must have hurt inside... You haven't got any of the old minis around still in a box somewhere?
@@52Miniatures i actually have almost a full box of 40k harlequins that are unpainted in the origin box. They are in the nostalgic class of ‘too good to paint’ somehow…
I find your narration incredibly organic and often quite philosophical! I've recently (couple of weeks ago) purchased some 40k for the first time in over 10 years to keep me busy with all the boredom. Learnt a lot with this video. Been considering painting my marines yellow haha
Nice S! Welcome back to the hobby! I hope the yellow doesn’t scare you away 😂
The cat's big!!! God damn it! LOL
I know, no joke. He's half "Main Coon"... they big :)
Beautiful, Dorn would be proud! Great advice too, understandable and helpful, thank you!
I'm glad you liked it S, thank you.
The subtle dry humour is great.
Everybody gangsta until they have to paint an Imperial Fists squad.
Ha ha! Yeah
this is probably the best mini i've seen
Wow! thanks H!
Watching this video, I couldn't help but to remember that old song by The Beatles: *Yellow Space Marine*
It'd get awfully crowded in there.
Rogal Dorn would be proud.
I follow a lot of painting channels here on CZcams, but i have to say that you are the only one that's truly inspiring me to do something that is not just a new technique to use one time and left forever. I really love your approach to the hobby and in general to youtube videos! Thanks for your work and mostly for your thoughts!
This comment really made my day. Thank you for it D
Here from Miniac's shout out to you - so glad I've subbed. I'll be watching all your back catalogue as time and small children allow
Welcome to the channel F! I'm very glad for Scott's recommendation. Hope you enjoy the rest of the vids!
Yellow is the best colour for Space Marines! :p
It's pretty striking on the table. I like the "ice blue" variety a lot as well. The wolf ones :)
Yellow - my nemesis - especially with a brush. (I need an airbrush!)
Yeah. I'm with you there.
@@52Miniatures And I watched this video again. Your videos are wonderful; I appreciate your good humor and humility while reflecting what you learn. (I still hate yellow though - It always looks much too chalky. I need to try that oil technique!)
When painting (not minis) yellow ochre is a godsend for getting something with good coverage. I think if I painted a yellow mini I would want to start with an artist's grade yellow ochre acrylic.
I will try and remember that P, thank you.
You could add weathering on the bottom of the armor, mud and black wash concentrating downwards. The yellow would make weathering stand out and add more re detail than the sculpt itself has.
That's a good idea. That would bring the focus up towards the face and that. Thanks
I buy model space ships ships. Then one day I wanted to adjust some colors. Looked up painting, and came across this whole Warhammer model painting universe I had no idea about. Still no idea about the game itself, but the craftmanship on display is amazing.
Welcome to the dark side R! There is plenty of room :)
To be honest, that is a rather spectacular paint job on the marine thingie. Agreed yellow is rather difficult to paint even when it’s on a flat surface with no shading or highlights! Oils are a great addition to the painting arsenal, agreed the extra step can be a question of ‘should I bother’ but once started it gives a life to the paint that washes and glazes can’t. Really enjoyed this vid, off to watch another of yours!
Thank you! Yeah, the oils definitely are a great “finalizer”. Every time I bring them out... well I just need to get them into my workflow more permanently. Even if it’s just as a wash or whatever.
I really got inspired by your work and your words. Thank you very much Sir!
Glad to hear it H! Thank you for letting me know.
well the "receits"are called purity seals are used as a mark of honour and experience, it used to be in the 30th millenium that if you came back with it intact it meant you were a veteran and elite soldier since you were able to keep a piece of paper from being torn off in the middle of a battle, in the 41st millenium its like a mark of purity and a way to show the emperor's guidance and protection so usually the veterans and higher ranking marines get them and they can also be given as a representation of an amazing feat in combat
Thank you Eduardo. It definitely must be quite the feat to manage to keep them not ripped off during combat :)
I learn something thanks to you brother. And that is pretty badass by the way, starting to really like spacemarines lore
@@onyxtheemeraldknight8429 well the purity seals aren't only for space marines, anyone that does good enough can receive one, sisters of battle usually have them, but yeah, space marine lore is pretty interesting, like the one faction inside the custodes that has some sort of premonition ability, so they go and protect seemingly unimportant people knowing they will do a great deed or become an important figure in the future
I love your videos. They are easily my favourite. I dont know whether its intentional but they make me laugh so much
Great to hear Chris, thank you.
Dude this is awesome, I'd be really keen to see you paint more 40K, especially marines!
I’m sure it will come one day. At the moment I’m still to stuck in fantasy world :)
@@52Miniatures appreciate that fully my dude, perhaps one of's, one model from each faction or something?....I dunno I like seeing different styles and approaches and enjoyed yours. Have lost a little enthusiasm for the hobby and this made me want to pick up a brush again.....I realise this is pure selfishness on my behalf haha ;)
In the begining all I could think is - just paint yellow with oils, they are so much easier... and then you whiped out the yellows. The captain looks amazing, I see no faults and the saturation is spot on! Vince Venturella would be proud!
I was kind of proud to give the inks a go, but the oils just really tied everything together. And thanks for the support :) I appreciate it.
More not less of the 'mumbo jumbo talk' 👍 my favourite painting videos are the ones that include ideas for keeping things fresh
Well thank you. I think my issue is keeping the mumbo jumbo relatively relevant :) But it is sure to stay.
I would say you painted bravely and it shows. Great work. Thanks for sharing and please stay safe.
Thanks! A lot of the time I think I call things done a bit to early... on this I tried to hang in there till everything felt right.
When we start painting, minis or something else, drawing etc we learn that darkening a color is not necerraly adding black like orange can be darkenend with red , redish brown, dark red, etc the green can be darkend with dark blue but as you learn and apply the rules (espacialy if you want to get out of your confort zone and if you like to learn, as you said), you learn that after the 1st step of acknoledging the rules and master them, the second step is to break the rules, as we usualy ear, first know and master the rules then break the rules.
The idea is to master principles, rules, laws and even exagerating them like having a green that have dark blue shadow and yellow highlights and doing it different way like having it maybe very progressive or not at all, you can have your green that has a big range of color like going from a very dark blue to a less darker turquoise, to a "normal" green to a yellowish green to a yellowish white.
Practice and explore, this is what going out of your confort zone is and exploring means also trying to break a bit the rules like darkennink your yellow with black instead of going for RED OR GREEN, like the 2 directions, ideas that arent just darkenning with black.. you can go browinish orange which I considere being the red direction because orange is putting red into the yellow.
But did you explore ? Did you try to break this yellow darkenning "rule" of going to orange red or green ? Did you try to darken it with black ? Did you already mixed yellow with black ? Who in the comment already tried to mix yellow and black ? If you tried it say it as an answer under my comment and tell me what kind of color did you obtain, before continuing reading my comment. You xan just say "yes I tried the mix before" or "you gave me the idea and I decide to test it" and then "I obtained a .. ... ... color"
Ok now if you are reading this, I am assuming that you already gave tested the yellow and black mix, almost once in your life. The color that you obtain was certanly a kind of camo/olive green which btw I call false green because there is no blue, its black instead, black and yellow.
Now, from here you can considere a third path for darkenning yellow, you can go in the hot with red, orange, brownish red or orange etc, you can go in the cold direction with blue so you have a greenish color, green being yellow and blue. And now, instead of having only the hot with red or cold with blue, you dont need to be afraid of black and can do it other ways with the third path :camo green, olive green which as I said arent green its a third path and to darkent even more mixe the camo/olive "green" to black and/or use black ink and in the other way, to lightening, mix the camo/olive "green" with yellow.
You'll be impress by the result it gives, I personnaly love it, much more than going into the otanges or the greens.
I think you will find that I pretty much experiment in every video published. This for example being my first “yellow space marine”. I present in the video, that I want to go for one with red / orange shading. And I experimented my way there. I appreciate your comment. But this was about me going for a specific space marine look. And sure, I can mix yellow with black. But it was not really the look I wanted for this :)
Try this. Paint the entire mini in pink and then paint the highlights in yellow. You get a really fun orange-yellow with minimal effort.
I'm here after the Dana Howl shoutout about your editing. Gotta say, you do deliver on the promises. I really dig it.

i have found that pink base does WONDERS for yellow.. i actually start with a peachy color then pink then my yellow and i am telling you it POPS!! it looks amazing and i am FARRRRR from a great painter!
I have heard! I'm going to give it a whirl next time :)
also yellow ink glaze on top :)
This is a Space Marine, a Captain of the glorious Imperial Fists, the protectors of the great Godemperor of mankind and Terra itself. How dare you calling him a yellow space dude, you shall be punished by the holy inquisition of the imperium of mankind!
; )
He should still keep better track of all his receipts :)
So basically your dude lends you a hero model...and you paint him dead and rotten hanging from a shield. What a friend you are! 😈
Really good results, love what you did to the mini. The warm yellow works really well with these blues.
Glad you went the extra mile with oils, I often neglect them too. In the end, this vid is stuffed with great thinking like think out of the box, getting out from your comfort zone and pin washing.
Free tip. Don't put your oils over a palette but on a piece of kitchen paper:
This way the disposal or remaining oil painting not transferred to the second palette is cleaner and easier BUT paper sucks part of the oil from the pigment so once thinned will dry a little faster.
Cheers Alex, have a nice weekend!
Only to remind him of mortality you know - memento mori... 😂 At least he got to be a holy dead person and not just the regular kind.
That is a very good tip with the paper, some of these oil paints are so very oily. Thanks. I’m glad I went the extra mile. Thinking of batching up on some “standard” batches. So that I more easily can just grab some oils and go.
Hope you are staying safe. Missed your comments on the last video and was a bit concerned, that everything was okay. Don’t think I’ll manage to get any more videos up before Christmas, so Merry Christmas! 🎄
@@52Miniatures So sorry to know 😰 I watched the video, really liked it. I mentally build my comment while watching BUT sadly I rescued an injured parrot a year ago and he thinks we are best pals so sticks to me hard enough to make me lose focus in virtually anything I try to do.
The way you made the theme, the lore permeate thru your unique take on these stormcast is superb. How they are geared towards battle, madness driven cause the resurrection. You made them more fearsome than the undead they fight against.
So that's it, real life is always in the middle of fun things.
Glad to know you and your fam are ok, I hope you have the best holidays one could have considering how the world have changed.
Hope 2021 will be even a better year for the channel, your high end quality videos well deserve it. Cheers! 👍

great job on this one. Thanks for showing how the sausage was made
I think it’s good I didn’t show how it was actually made... that would probably have been some messy footage.
use a palette knife to mix oil paints, get a cleaner consistent paint. Also it won't ruin your brushes :) Wipe it clean with kitchen roll.

Well thank you James!
I found your video randomly and while im also learning a little about painting, i feel im getting some sort of sage advice through a story or something. its nice
Thank you C, I appreciate it! Glad to hear you found your way over.
I think, at this moment in history with the prolific amount of information on youtube, the more difficult colors to paint in miniature have now become some of the easiest to find vast amounts of information in the form of tutorials and tips on! What a wonderful thing it is too! Thank you.
Challenging myself to paint a yellow space marine was the how I learnt about contracting/alternate colour shadows, and started what I jokingly call my "purple phase." I came to many of the same conclusions as yourself. Wonderful video!
Hah! Thanks B! I can definitely see how one could end up in a "purple phase"... sounds like a place to be :)
Oh so you darkenend the yellow by mixing everytime a bit mot purple ? Like dark purple to yellowish white ? I love the tints of yellow purple mixed, you can also do it.with orher complementary I did my bloodletters in dark angel green and build the red from mixing greens, reds etc until having the last, lighter color as a pure red, beautiful result😉
That is one of the best minis I have seen! Seriously, that paint scheme is fantastic and perfectly executed! Well done!
Wow! Thanks for that... seriously :)
I like how he used a strong analogous scheme, and didn’t try to shove a bunch of purple in the darkest spots. Many people tell beginners to do this, because yellow and red violet and blue violet are complementary. Without training, they just look like giant bruises
I LOVE painting yellow, but I hate painting SM. ^^
My "trick" to painting yellow is to use cadmium yellow as a highlight. No white at all.
Nice, that sounds like a good thing :) Thanks for the tip!
This video made me giggle. Thanks very much
My pleasure Warren :)
This is wonderful, not only does it help with painting yellow, but its super easy to watch
Thanks P, nice to hear it :)
@9:04 I would agree that the sword did perhaps have an air of 'incredibly talented 5 year old' about it but in the finished shots I think that 'swirling vortex' would describe it quite aptly! Very inspiring :)
Thanks O, I think I just needed something to take out some of the “frustration” amassed by all the other fine details :)
I play Iron Warriors, which means I've painted a lot of yellow. I like Seraphim Sepia and de-saturating the yellow outside of the highlights. It comes across as still quite yellow without it being such a "happy" color.
Yellow is tricky. 100% agree. Thanks for sharing, and the captain looks awesome!
It sure is! Thanks for watching and Merry Christmas.
Started the yellow the right way.. using pink.. but you only need to use a transparent yellow over the top, the transition between the pink and white, will give you the transition that you used the orange for.
basically... paint it pink... spray on the highlights with white.. cover the whole thing with thin layers of a transparent yellow.
Thanks E, yes - this seems to be the favoured technique :)
And the cat is.. big.
😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣🐱🐱🐱
Lost my shit completely right there. People in the train are looking scared and confused.
Ha ha! He is pretty huge though.
I think it turned out really good! I know what you're saying earlier in the film as well, so thanks for the encouragement Alex.
Thanks for being receptive C :)
I feel like (as boring as it may sound) a thorough review of (Renee) DeGa and particularly maybe Picasso (the early stuff with all the yellows) would really help in studying yellow and the appropriate effects; maybe more important is the way they went about observing objects in nature - put some yellow pears or pale oranges and a Tonka truck on a table in a room with 1 small window and no lights on, take some pictures and just kind of look at it from different angles. My opinion is that extreme lighting takes us to the edge of what color and shade can do, particularly because as the amount of light fades our ability to detect the color diminishes as the cones in the eye require a certain amount of saturation to 'turn on'
Thank you for the thoughts Ramirez
@@52Miniatures I expect you have a much stronger basis for all of this than me - I have more of a passing interest in a lot of the earlier western artists, but I am absolutely fascinated by high contrast lighting. There's an (Italian?) fellow that did an incredible video on the topic while comparing grasaille to works from Caravaggio
So...you could have painted him with acrylics orange....shade the orange with some red but not much...and highlight it with yellow....to the point it is now...amazing paintjob..and what you say its quite true
Thank you T, I appreciate it :)
Tremendous talent! Nicely done
Thanks a bunch Eric! 😁

Yeah... I am a bit of a fantasy buff. I have a plan for some Sci fi but not quite 40k. We'll see what happens, right now focusing on finishing of my Stormcasts.
I am blown by how well this turned out. I never knew oil paints can add so much depth! Gotta grab me some of those.
They do kind of blow me away as well. Takes a little while getting used to the “workflow” but well worth it.

Fantastic video !
If you like inky washing up liquid, I can definitely recommend trying oil washes. They're similar, but better, and you can undo them completely if needed.
Yeah! there might be something along those lines in an upcoming video ;)
I had to break off watching, I've just come back to the bit where you used the oil paints! Now I feel silly!
No worries! I was just waiting for it :) but in a way you are right. If I would do this again I’d probably skip the ink bit and move straight to oils.
@@52Miniatures well, I like it that you show the whole journey. Many painters on CZcams give the impression that each step is pre planned, and painting a model is just executing that plan, which is never how it goes in real life.
These warts and all videos show us that if it goes wrong, you don't have to strip and start again.
Thank You Mikey, I appreciate it. I’ve been trying to inspire somehow, and I think for now, just putting myself in the deep end and talk about the process -mixed with the painting tips I find relevant... is what I feel most comfortable with. I’m growing less fond of telling people what to do and how to do it. I’d rather just do / try it myself and share knowledge that way.
