  • The return of Warhammer The Old World is great, now I can paint some of my old minis! In this video I restore a 1992 Warhammer Ork Champion to its former glory because its way cooler than the new Old World Ork champion. We go through a nice green Ork skin scheme as well as a great yellow armour tutorial, and more. Another Epic tale from the Hobby realm.

    Lovely video of course, Alex - so much love goes into them, it's obvious!
    One tip to avoid paint explosions - after shaking a pot of paint, I hold it upside down and give the paint a solid shake, down towards the nozzle. Then when I open it the paint is right there at the business end, often only needing a touch on the wet palette to deliver the minimum amount of paint required.
    Works for me (works with ketchup and shampoo, too).

    Saffron yellow is the best color for an ork. I played with using Dark Jade to shade the muscles and worked lighter using heavy blue grey and stone grey - I let the painting dictate the journey and the destination is one of my favorite orks but certainly not what I thought I was doing

      @52Miniatures  Před 4 měsíci +1

    I am totally with you on these old sculpts. I recently painted the 2006 dwarf king with the feathered helmet and I can't remember having so much fun painting a model. Sure, it's not from the 90s but it was still handsculpted and full of character. Really can't put my finger on what it is exactly that these models have that the newer ones don't. Maybe in the end it's just nostalgia, but I think there's more :)

    For much of my childhood and adolescence, I played Warhammer Fantasy (it was almost a religion here in Spain, it is very difficult for me to assume that in the rest of the world 40K was more popular), Mordheim, 40K, LOTR and in general anything from Games Workshop. At the first half of my twenties, I stayed away from miniatures completely. Now, at 33, I've gotten interested in some games again and I'm surprised how much has changed for the better. When I was young, I didn't consider playing anything that wasn't from Games Workshop and now my favorite game is Carnevale. I'm putting together crazy Dark Soul-inspired bands for Frostgrave and trying to create scenery to match. But the biggest difference is that before we didn't have CZcams or social networks! This is one of the channels that I have watched and liked the most in recent months, although I have never commented on it. It's great to see people from other parts of the world enjoying this great hobby.
    Nice ork guy btw, looks like he's having a great time! :)

    • @52Miniatures
      @52Miniatures  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Thank you for writing Fran, I’m glad to hear you’ve liked the content. I have a few Patrons into Carnevale and it seems like a fun game. You’re quite right, there’s a lot of games out there and more creators working on their own thing showcasing what inspires them. There is a massive GW following and thus it’s “easier” to make videos with that content, often guaranteeing double the views. So it’s a bit of an effort not doing it. So I appreciate when people like you write and let me know it’s appreciated

    I adore the nonchalant or cavalier attitude towards the brand of the paint. Anything will do as long as the paint is nice enough and the color suitable.
    This is totally something that I validate and it brings nice results, in comparison for the will to stick absolutely to the letter to one color or brand specifically.

    • @52Miniatures
      @52Miniatures  Před 4 měsíci

      I think we get a little brainwashed because of what is widely seen - ie CZcams. It’s deemed more approachable to use what is at the hands of most painter on the other side of the screen. So that means Citadel mainly. But it would be great if we could aproach things more in a manner of colour and not brand.

    • @klug5916
      @klug5916 Před 4 měsíci

      @@52Miniatures Oh, but I totally validate this eclectic approach. I get that quite a lot of people want to absolutely adhere to a very precise color scheme, with the exact paint used.
      For my own part, I prefer to see the painting in term of color, like you do. Yellow is yellow, whatever the brand, after all.
      Anyway, as someone close to your age and w&y of thinking, I always very appreciate your videos, especially when you open a bit to side consideration, sources of inspiration, etc.

    Hi, mate. New subscriber here.
    I’m an older painter too. I’m 41 and started painting when I was 9, a plastic Night Goblin Archer.
    Without being too big headed I consider myself a very good painter with a lot of skill and creativity and I just wanted to say I absolutely love your style.
    Those high contrast gradients and the multiple colours used to add vibrancy and interest are beautiful. It’s a technique I use occasionally (I tend to paint my models in the style which reflects the miniature, setting, and background), and your style has totally inspired me to paint a bunch of miniatures from my pile of shame in this style.
    Well done mate, and I hope you get to make a salary off your work.

    A thing about the pose is that 2-dimensional poses were a lot safer to cast in metal- removing them from 2-part moulds was simpler (less fiddly bits to get caught in an overhang) but also with the detail facing downwards or upwards into the surface of the mould, you got better results. A lot like light and shadow with only one or two light sources, I imagine. With more complex manufacturing came more complex options and more complex poses.

    That is a gorgeous orc! I've been painting mine much quicker than you did on this one, but seeing your slower process is definitely motivational. I'll have to set some time aside to just do a single mini

    If you look for old greenskin armybook you can find very good pdf scans in the web of every page you are interested. Great work, i also love minis that emerged when they were just my dream to have (years 95-96) and have few of i managed to own with no plan of paint strip but this new orc boss is really cool. Give him chance, its perfect personification of Grimgor Ironhide!
