- Metallic Red and Gold - Cataphractii Terminators painted in one evening. This video is a step by step guide on how to achieve a similar paint job. I also talk about why setting a time limit when painting a miniature can result in a new tool in your hobby toolbox. Finally, I have no idea what happened to my hair in the opening shot but I can assure you it has not fallen off.

These actually came out really nice I agree the grimey look is totally necessary. They look like a hard fighting unit. Those Lego Ninjas are toast.
RIP Ninjas

@@52Miniatures I don't believe it!
I believe it, but I'm easily manipulated.

love the red over gold. I've been doing that for anything khorne related for a while.
At least four techniques I never thought of that I'll be using in my next project!
Damn, that shot of you using the airbrush on your terminators is absolutely stunning
Still watching the video but it's already looking awesome. Great work, Alex!
Also Commenting for the algorithm!
Totally agree that painting is relaxing or should be- even when one speeds. And you sped beautifully. Well done, the usual A+ script too. 👍👍👍
Thank you as always Mark
Fantastic video! That red looks great and I'm confident the battle between Ninjago, Dinosaurs, and Space Marines will be legendary. I agree with setting a time limit too, I make sure I don't go over 2hrs unless I'm invested in what I'm painting but I think 2hrs is perfect to prevent boredom because once that sets in the fun begins to fade fast
Great video Alex
I landed here thanks to the joint Midwinter Minis podcast, and have no regrets at all. I pounced on this particular video as I am planning a Marine army colour scheme, and was about to try something similar with a chrome base, but the gold looks so much better!
Welcome to the channel! The "contrast paint over metallic" is a great trick". Warm tones over gold, cool tones over silver.
I just stumbled upon this video, and your channel, from a recommendation on the CZcams homepage, and I've already subscribed after watching this masterpiece. The cinematography, the immaculate script and narration, the lesson to be learned by the end of the video- it's unlike any other piece of miniature painting content I've ever seen. Good luck to you, sir, and keep making stuff like this! It's amazing. I'll be binge-watching the rest of your videos now.
Thank you humbly and welcome to the channel
Hey guys!! I just want to push back a bit. If you're using rattlecans, I would still recommend you basecoat your mini's first. The rattlecans don't always adhere properly to bare plastic. The rattlecans also do go in and out of production, and have their formula's changed relatively often. So if you've found a colour you really like and expect to be working on the same army/project for more than a couple years, I would recommend you pick up maybe half a dozen cans and store them in a dark cupboard!
Thanks for the vid though 52! Great work!
Thanks for the tips James
+1 for the Bling Dark Future.... also I found when my son was young that as long as he knew that these were "grown up toys" he was much more gentle with them.
Thats true! Thanks DB
I have been looking for an efficient (and relatively simple) formula for red armor. Very pleased to find your recipe!
Happy gaming!
Great 👍
Confident and meditative. Your channel is a pleasure.
Thank you so much 😊
Been thinking about something like this for TSons and this will help loads!
Thank you!
Absolutely stunning effect with gold to red to oil... I will definitely copy this method 😊👍
Love the look of that red over the gold, I wonder what other neat metallic can be created with various metallic basecoats and transparent paint over the top.
Definitely experiment with it! I've gotten a nice bronze, a very dark unpleasant red, and something I can only describe as looking like a manhole cover
Marco Frisoni has done a lot of that on his channel.
A good place to start experimenting is silver for cool colours and gold for warm. But mainly try and think of a colour wheel and think of gold as yellow. What happens when you add yellow to blue or to green for example.
I love how thought-provoking your videos are Alex. The gold under the red is a brilliant use and I find myself nowadays trying to think of other clever plans like you do!
Amazing video! Grymt jobbat, älskar allt här, bra tips, bra storytelling och allt!
Tack!
I amazed everytime I see a kid who is willing to let his father paint some minis for him. My boys are insatiable with the demand to paint more, even given one of them is not the most artistic. At any rate, these look great!
Honestly the idea of a ninjago and 40k crossover sounds amazing. Your son is clearly going places.
Absolutely love that red. I will try that.
I love your videos. They're not just good solid tutorials, but your running commentary is pure gold. Thanks, and keep up the good work.
Oh yes, this scheme really works! Thanks for the guide!
Did this with an ATV and it come out absolutely stunning!!!!
Amazing stuff. Your time limit miniatures looks better than most of my best. Learned a lot! Love your narration - you must be a funny guy to have a beer with for sure!
I appreciate, thanks 🙏
Those are excellent for a quick paintjob.
Fantastic work, they look gorgeous! I agree on the concept of pacing your painting to yourself. I think even an evening spent enjoying thinking about how to paint a model in front of you, idly twirling a paintbrush, is just as valid a pastime in the hobby as actually finishing something.
Incredible piece of work!
Those look so good for the time spent.
Easily one of the coolest kits ever produced by GW. I love my relic terminators almost as much as my Ebon Keshig. Just spectacular sculpts. You really did them justice.
Yeah, Great looking models!
This video is not only good art, but you are a full on ASMR experience. Dakka, Space Marines, and soothing sound and visuals.
The time it takes to figure out which paints to use, and creating a new workflow for something you haven't painted before...that was spot on. I'm sitting on a fully primed Stormcast army, struggling with that same, exact dilemma currently.
Great video Alex as aiways, and only those who know will get the smell of in the morning quote, and brilliant film those who know will know. Please keep them coming,
I love the fact that you painted these for your Son. ❤ They look fantastic as well!
Thank you!
Awesome result. Sometimes it's nice to speed things up. You learn what matters the most and then can apply it to the next projects.
Dark wash + final highlight really made the lustrous red & gold pop. Need those dark shades for the brights to shine in contrast.
Cracking as always, becoming a better painter is not always about more layers of detail.
Another wonderful video. Thank you, Alex.
Amazing video!! Love the reason behind these models, got too keep the little ones happy, and they'll have even more fun knowing dad painted it!
Couldn't agree more!
They look great Alex! I also love contrast over metallic paints, doing the same but with silver and blue for my Alpha Legion
Thanks man!
Great video as always, and I absolutely love how your terminators turned out. Definitely adding this one to my toolbox!
Thank you Luke!
Beautiful work!
I use this for all my armored minis. I also like applying a wash before the contrast to give a little more depth
That is another good idea. It’s then possible to tint the armour in other ways as well. Like adding a blue wash to get more purple like shading 👍
That is a very nice result for the time spent!
I like the pre-oil wash "bling" best, it reminds me of a beautiful toy unwrapped at christmas. great video, thank you
You're a good father, and a amazing storyteller. Thank you.
Thank you humbly
the orchid soil is genius. will use this for my orks and blood angels!
It’s great 👍
Incredible work as always 😁❤️👍🏻
Great film, as always! It's the ritual of sitting down and calmly painting, that I get the most enjoyment out of. Speed painting, as it were, doesn't always fit with that. Thanks for another great watch!
Thank you Jarrid 💜
That bag soil is going to be used by you, your son, his kids and their children to base minis.
This was a very nice video. Apart from the amazing job you did with the Terminators, this is the kind of video I'd like to watch on a rainy day with a cup of tea.
This is the type of video I will reference back to over and over, if only for a reminder that you can take your time on a model but using techniques to make painting life a little easier. Thanks Alex.
Thanks Khry
I am so excited about your recipe for skin tones, I tried it right away and it is truly amazing. It gives me so many options to "play" with different gradations. Thank you so much!
I’m glad you like it!
Those came out fantastic! Great results given the time invested. They don’t seem to be compromised as a speed paint job can often be. Well done. Good video
Thank you!
Nice painting and narrative
Another great video Alex! The oil wash at the end tied everything together beautifully and made them look properly mean and moody 👍
Thanks B!
Wonderful paint jobs!
These look great! I've seen the "Contrast/Ink over Metal" before, but doing it over gold changes it in a nice way. Ill definitely be trying this for... something! Lol
Also, thank you for the iea of the orchid mix. Will be ordering some of that soon as well!
Google how to sterilize soil, a certain temperature for a certain time in the oven. This will also remove the moisture from the bark
@@52Miniatures I definitely will, thank you!
great job, love your bases. keep it up. thank you
Love warhammer terminators!
Oil wash for the WIN! Very nice. Great job and another great video. Thank you Alex
Thank you Sean!
Excellent job
Love this technique. I need to use it more
Wait till you learn about thousand sons lol
Amazing job mate just incredible
Wonderful work!
Thank you! Cheers!
Holy moly! That oil wash is like magic!!!
I love it 🙏
Great lookin miniatures, I like the griming down and then removing some of the grime, makes the minis look much more like they have been on a battlefield for some time.
These turned out superb!
Thanks man!
Great stuff friend 👏 👍
Thanks for sharing your journey
Thank you Mark
I’ve found going in with a plan for the model paint scheme helps. It doesn’t have to have exact steps but having the colors you want in your scheme helps set the time table imo.
Amazing as always!
Thanks Lee!
This was awesome!
Small hint as to the type of bark that is used in orchid soil: It's pine bark. Great stuff, too.
Happy you did some of the fancier Terminators. I like their design
Thanks Matt!
This quick red armor is going to be great for some vampires I've been procrastinating with over the last 6 months.
Good idea!
loved it! thanks!
Love Arbitor Ian. Lore legend.
i think they came out really nice, the gold priming gave the red colour a nice metallic look. i will definitely try that out.
and as someone who rarly plan out my painting sessions and only goes in with a general idea, i do think it is good to make a plan and set a time for how long you will paint. i have tried it once or twice and when i look back on it i can see that i got more made then compared to when im just sit down with a general idea.
Superb story telling, my squad of Leviathan Space Marines Infernus i just bought are going to get the Alex touch, thank you.
This looks awesome. and I realy wanna try this contrast red over gold my self now.
Oil washes lend themselves inmsanely well to the "grim dark" aesthetic, I've used them for years in the world if miniature moidelling and they pick out details so well on well sculpted models.
Absolutely lovely video and terminators, Alex
Thank you man!
Amazing Paint job 😊
Thank you so much 😀
Really nice video! Thanks again sir.
Thanks Mike!
Great vid as always. Would love to see one about the differences/advantages of the oil washes you use compared to the acrylic washes like nuln oil etc.
I want to make a video on oil paints.. this is a good thing to add
Looks great, as always! I use a similar technique for my 30k Alpha Legion, but I apply the color layer with airbrush...after watching this I may try a batch this way so I don't have to redo some of the metal trim!
i did the same with my thousand sons but i primed them in gunmetal and zenithal highlighted with aluminum before applying the contrast colourfilter. its so easy and looks like much more effort was put into the gradient. also oilwashes really are liquid talent.
I LOVED Asterix & Obelisk when I was a kid. My partner & I were discussing the comics just the other day 🙂
Love that red
Rather close to how I painted my buddy's Thousand Sons, but different, too. Fantastic results and incredibly charming presentation.
Very Nice!
very interesting how you created a wash I never thought of that before well escpecially for miniatures. Ill definitely have to considure challenging myself in this way.
Glad to hear it Josh
Very nice video and bunch of terminators! And i am happy, that i am not the only one, who forgot/overlooked the double layer shoulder pats 😅 there are meant to be 2 on top of each other. I freaked out when i completed painting my first one and then looked at the instructions 😂😂😂
Hah! Yeah, er thought they looked way cooler this way.
Wow oil washes ftw. Now i need to try them!
Good show Old chap!
Thank you good sir
So cool!😮
Thanks!
My Cats are named Asterix and Obelix! Your son is surely a man of culture
My son is 6 and he started painting space marines because they look like robots (he even calls them space robots). But he wants to paint them by himself (he asks for help only for the eyes) and wants a squad to fight my chaos marines (evil space robots).
So I painted a space marine along with him and it was my first "speed painted" mini (and my first non-chaos marine).
Thanks for the great tutorial...and a beautiful video with superb narration.
Thanks M! I’m glad to hear your son wants to paint stuff himself. My son does to but he also seems aware that mine turn out very neat. And so for these he wanted something that looks like the minis I play with :)
Hi Alex. I'm back 😀 I watched your video this morning but didn't have any interesting or humorous things to say besides the usual aesthetic platitudes. I'll think about it some more and maybe come back with something astonishingly clever , but don't hold your breath. 😆
Oh, by the way, you might be surprised to know, I love your work. 🤣
Hah! Thanks man 🙏
Hope you don’t mind but as i commented on your instagram i am so steeling this colour scheme for my chapter!! The 80’s Flash Gordon vibe brought back some nostalgia for me 😎
