STI wreck at VIR

  • Edit - I see periodic comments about how I was chasing the Daytona Prototype. At the time I was racing in a weight/hp based class and there were adjustments for various things to sway your overall number. I was using undersized tires to get a better weight/hp, which were okay for shorter sprint races. The tires would get pretty greasy on the longer 40 minute races. That plus general fatigue/overdriving led to this wreck.
    First time back at VIR since the new gators. I could tell I was shaving some time in a couple spots, so I just pushed a little too hard during the race.
    If you're curious about why exactly I yelled "way too much" before hitting the wall, it's because coming into the turn I realized I had too much speed. In my head I was thinking "way too much, way too much" Once I dipped off the track the reality of the situation hit me and I then blurted it out haha.

      @@GamerGavin04 I guess it's not that bad. In my experience I put 2 tires into wet grass momentarily and it made my car start drifting. I didn't accelerate to send grip to the rear because I was under the incorrect impression that FWD or AWD cars should brake to correct oversteer, lol. I totaled by car and learned that lesson the hard way...

      @@SI0AX I didn't even think of that even though it's the logical thing to try if braking doesn't work. I assume he was on slicks therefore it was impossible to grip on the grass, but with street tires it should definitely be worth a try.

    • @SI0AX
      @SI0AX Před 2 lety +2

      @@user-hr2zy7ct8h When your car is drifting, it's because you don't have enough grip at the rear. When you accelerate you shift the vehicle weight to the rear thus increasing rear tire grip. You want to do that to stop oversteer/drift/fish-tailing and one you stop that, you can start braking to slow down. If you don't control take care of the oversteer condition before braking, you will remove the needed weight at the rear and making it all worse.
      That is what happened in my case. I won't be making that mistake again.

    so the things that hop out to me are in that first corner, we got on the brakes too early, and then we felt slow in the mid corner and tried to chase the other car, and therefore added gas, and that put us out wide due to the drivetrain, then halfway through the next corner a big lift and possibly a dab of brakes to force the car to open up and rotate was in order, but we missed the point by a little and in result added too much brake causing a overstep, then a wheel correction, and then a snapback, then turning back in and locking the brakes (as we have now missed the braking point) causing the slide and spin. dont be afraid to really use the brakes to make these STI's dance around their centers. in RWD you would want to be using the braking and accelerating points you are, but because when you hit gas, the front tries to pull you have to drive the car in hard and get it to turn on the brakes, then accelerate out in a straigher line. good job at getting the car un-fucked and getting back out there, thats champion material for sure
