STI wreck at VIR

- Edit - I see periodic comments about how I was chasing the Daytona Prototype. At the time I was racing in a weight/hp based class and there were adjustments for various things to sway your overall number. I was using undersized tires to get a better weight/hp, which were okay for shorter sprint races. The tires would get pretty greasy on the longer 40 minute races. That plus general fatigue/overdriving led to this wreck.
First time back at VIR since the new gators. I could tell I was shaving some time in a couple spots, so I just pushed a little too hard during the race.
If you're curious about why exactly I yelled "way too much" before hitting the wall, it's because coming into the turn I realized I had too much speed. In my head I was thinking "way too much, way too much" Once I dipped off the track the reality of the situation hit me and I then blurted it out haha. - Auta a dopravní prostředky
"Wreck? All you did was spin out into some gra... oh shit there's a wall there"
I did the same in a Mclaren P1, I just hit rewind and braked earlier next time.
forza EX DEEEE
has rewind assist, what a scrub.
@@nauseous3925 Thats what all the pros use to nail their technique ya lil bitch
agreed
@@EazyDuz18 Pros on Forza use rewind HAHA this just got better
Seemed like you overdrove a little into T1 also, that pesky racecar infront was definitely a bad influence lol
you always lose 10 iq points when racing on a real track, no biggie
The "he can brake that late and corner at this speed, so can I" mentality.
bad influence FACTS DUDE MY FRIENDS DO THE SAME SHIT TO ME
exactly my first thought when I saw it come past. He went: "Oh I can keep up with this guy"
@@realbigtuna667 THAT PART
Man I was cussing for the damn car to stop too...sliding across the grass has to be the worst 1-2 seconds in racing.
I thought he could have tried accelerating and maybe have the AWD save him, but wet grass is hard to grip in, lol.
@@SI0AX i accidentally got oversteer the other day while it was pouring its ass off and i almost flew into a ditch but for some odd reason the grass just before the ditch is what let my tires grip 😂😂 You wouldve thought i wouldve been worse once i hit the grass
@@GamerGavin04 I guess it's not that bad. In my experience I put 2 tires into wet grass momentarily and it made my car start drifting. I didn't accelerate to send grip to the rear because I was under the incorrect impression that FWD or AWD cars should brake to correct oversteer, lol. I totaled by car and learned that lesson the hard way...
@@SI0AX I didn't even think of that even though it's the logical thing to try if braking doesn't work. I assume he was on slicks therefore it was impossible to grip on the grass, but with street tires it should definitely be worth a try.
@@user-hr2zy7ct8h When your car is drifting, it's because you don't have enough grip at the rear. When you accelerate you shift the vehicle weight to the rear thus increasing rear tire grip. You want to do that to stop oversteer/drift/fish-tailing and one you stop that, you can start braking to slow down. If you don't control take care of the oversteer condition before braking, you will remove the needed weight at the rear and making it all worse.
That is what happened in my case. I won't be making that mistake again.
I was watching when you spun! I didn't enjoy the slow spin into the wall!! The STi looked mighty strong in the first couple laps leading the pack tho! I have some Lame Iphone photos pre wreck if you'd like them.
Please
iPhone doesn’t have bad quality anymore XD

@@eaSTS9 that’s the joke ..
@@santaslayer1013 I got the joke haha
After it hit the tire barrier, it appears to have taken a vape break🤣
😐
@@Treva-dn5jb na it got a chuckle outta me, dont be so harsh on the dude
I was instructing at Watkins Glen years back when NASCAR driver "Clint Bowyer" was getting instruction in the instructor's group. He was out front of me in a less powerful car than I was driving and I thought about trying to catch him until I saw how fast he went into turn one. I decided it was time to pit before I embarrassed myself. Best track move I made that day.
Target fixation?
All of the sudden braking at the same point as the race car in front. Who knew it is not possible all of the sudden. 🤔😀
An ego check he probably didn’t learn from
Yeah it looks like you were distracted by the racing machine that overtook you and you started to try to keep up it's a tricky turn it's like two turns and one it seems like
I agree, he was following very closely, increasing his speed trying to catch up was his mistake.
Yea best line through there is to take it tight and brake accross the first apex then turn in. Looked like he tried to keep tight into the full corner and ended up braking while turning
Its the go kart effect you follow the speed of the person in front😂 on a track day none competitive theres a big difference in some people’s cars especially the one this bloke thought he could take that corner in😂😂
Anyone else suddenly get this old vid in their recommended after 8 years ?
Yes
Same. Very strange!
Thanks for sharing! I was running in the drizzle Oct. 13th in my STi and was paranoid as all hell about this especially in T3. Hope everything is OK something similar happened to me in the snow you might want to have a look at the wheel bearings on the left side if you have not they don't like side impacts. Good luck and we need you back out there representing for Subaru!!
always the left side🤣
Damn that thing is fast though
Mistakes happen when you dance with the limit. Looks like you’re a good driver though so eh wouldn’t be down about it
not good driver at all good drivers dont crash buddy lmfaoooo
these videos always give me that gut wrenching feeling of despair. i hope i never get in this kinda situation, its not the crash that scare me, its the money its gonna take to repair the car
Crashed my car and it was so minor no airbags went off. Still cost £14500 to fix. Yes, that's british pounds. Fourteen and a half thousand of them.
@@unrealecki'll stick to simracing lol
That is a terrible feeling, you were pushing that thing hard tho!
what kind of gauge pod is that?
You’re good . You’re car is just sporting the rally look now. Keep on racing !
My condolences may be with you
Did you have the right tires for the conditions, or did you just outdrive them?
He was outdriving those tires. Trying to brake and turn way beyond the limits of tire traction.
Focus on YOUR line, YOUR braking points and YOUR turn in and apex. Smoother hands, brother. Glad you were ok.
So how many times have you sent it in this car? 😬
That awd grip
Glad to see you made it out ok. How does one get into this sort of racing anyway?
fuckton of money to spend on parts and a passion for racing
NASA HPDE, scca track days! Look up when they’ll be having them in your region and see if it’s something you’d be interested in!
Did you get distracted by the faster car in front?
I honestly feel like that's what happened, started to want to follow that cars line.... atleast that's how it appears.
@@TBInuYashaX yeah he had more grip looks like it has more aero too.
TB InuYasha X strangely I’ve started doing that recently.
@@isaacsrandomvideos667 I think its a common thing that can occur, we get sucked into a battle mode or a form of trying to keep up with something that is obviously faster than us. 😂😂 battle mode initiated
almost looks like hi didnt want to put the throttle down in the corner in fear of running into the guy in front of him...when he slipped a little in the first corner he was on the brakes with dude right in front of him..couldnt get grip and acellerate soon enough in the corner to use the AWD to its maximum
CZcams recommended 3 STI videos now, blown engine, blown gearbox then this wreck
That basically sums up the ownership experience. The owners all think those shitboxes are race cars.
Fixated on the car in front?
At least the car isn’t too jacked looking, was it drivable after the wreck? Seemed like the Sti is super fast!
2013 bruh
I'm sorry.. and Congrats lol
Sucks to see that happen. But we learn from our mistakes.
You know what they say "I'd you don't crash every now and then you aren't driving hard enough"
I realize this is an old video but a good one anyway that a lot of people racing awd cars can learn from, all it takes is one tire on the grass going wide. Good damage control spin all things considered
"I"d you don't crash" dude you mean IF?
This idiot quoted it too...
@@KillerPojo12 you should change your name to Captain Obvious
@@P1Fanatic I may just do that ? great joke... ?
As soon as he rounded turn 1 I knew where he'd slide. Done it myself in FM7 a couple of times, but it definitely sucks IRL
this is how i picture every sti driver on the road.
Feels nice to know it's not must my scoop that looks like it's gonna fly off
Was this repairable? Looks not that bad, well, pretty bad, but not totally catastrophic.
Still, sad to see.
Good to see that a WRX Sti can do more than just plow the front end! :-)
Grass runoff’s… may as well be ice.
so the things that hop out to me are in that first corner, we got on the brakes too early, and then we felt slow in the mid corner and tried to chase the other car, and therefore added gas, and that put us out wide due to the drivetrain, then halfway through the next corner a big lift and possibly a dab of brakes to force the car to open up and rotate was in order, but we missed the point by a little and in result added too much brake causing a overstep, then a wheel correction, and then a snapback, then turning back in and locking the brakes (as we have now missed the braking point) causing the slide and spin. dont be afraid to really use the brakes to make these STI's dance around their centers. in RWD you would want to be using the braking and accelerating points you are, but because when you hit gas, the front tries to pull you have to drive the car in hard and get it to turn on the brakes, then accelerate out in a straigher line. good job at getting the car un-fucked and getting back out there, thats champion material for sure
On that day, you learned rule no 1.
NEVER chase a car, that is outside of your class.
That sucks.
I spun there once in the rain but luckily it was an easy off. No harm, no foul
I got $20 says that steering twitch while braking fuct you up when the car in front braked hard outside. You tried like hell. One thing I love about Subaru is they can take a lickin' and keep on tickin'!
yeah looks like that unsettled the rear
@@Wigwhom86 I've learned that in ANY turn.... once you've passed the outside corner and start your way in towards the apex, near or at your limit....You are fully committed to that line. Any deviation from that line can and will break you loose. I would have expected more from the lead pack given the cars in that group but it looked like someone fuct up the rhythm.
The hood scoop was wanting to take flight
On any track (or random field, I suppose) the feeling out on the grass at speed is one of utter helplessness.
Noticed a lot of tracks in the US just have grass run off, vs a gravel trap. Not that there aren't gravel traps in the US, just see them less.
Least it wasn’t rear or head on.
Hardly a wreck? I was expecting at least a partial rollover
You would think they’d be courteous and put a sand trap in for you?
A decreasing radius turn is tough
that wall really comes out of nowhere
How did you lose traction???
Too fast. The tires just couldn't hold it on the track.
welcome to 2021 video
What happened? I noticed you did a little correction to prevent oversteer and it is almost as if that prevented you from making the turn.
Yeah, the twitch in the steering wheel caused him too go too far outside
NO NOT THE SUBIE! *Cries*
How did the car slide so far if it wasn't even going that fast? The grass acted like ice!
Seriously, he didn't look like he could have been going any faster than 40mph. Crazy how slippery grass is
You youngins have never heard of something called a Slip N Slide. Old toy/slide from the 90s maybe even 80s where you lay it out on your yard, add water and slide on it after a running start. You'd keep sliding on the wet grass. Felt the need to teach the younger generations 😏
That one hurt.
Looked to me a reaction to the guy in front of him jamming on the breaks.
Looked to me like he made the mistake of thinking he can corner at the same speed as the car in front.
His car warned him on the previous corner and he didn't pay attention.
@@yt.personal.identification yep maybe he got his ego in check after this mishap
I did the same thing the first time on a track. With a 06 Sti non the less. The faster car definitely gave me the wrong confidence.
Wot happened to the subaru 4 wheel drive ...
4 wheel drive... not 4 wheel stop XD
Physics still apply to 4wd cars
@@_winter7745 HILARIOUS comment
STI = So Totaled It?
you did good
Damn that sucks... maybe awd should be on a track with turns.
I thought it said in VR
DISCLAIMER…No bugs were harmed in the making of this video. 😉
as long as you were fine...!
Looks like you had the corner.
the car never really had the chance to get straight enough for proper braking, the car in front might have distracted but even without him that looked tricky
The white car in front approach to cutting the turn was not ideal and unsuccessful, therefore causing both of them to slow down and the Great STI Driver to slip on loose grounds. Stay Safe Racing!
Good shit fixing it!
If the car in front is half the weight/ hight and you can follow, especially in turns ... figure out
rip
Thankfully it wasn’t major
Your mistake was thinking you could keep up with what appeared to be a prototype race car. You're lucky the damage wasn't worse
Classic.. trying g to keep up with fast guy. I did same thing road racing motorcycles. Humbling.
lesson learned for people's taking advantage in their car that is not supposed in the super track
It will buff out.
Crunchy McCrackles
Whoopsie
he was watching the car in front and not his position on the corner
Tryna keep up with that car in front of him was probably part of the problem
you wanted to follow that car infront, but you had no downforce :D
It’s a SUBI what u expect
He thought he was driving the car in front 🤣
Granny hit the wall too.
Would never wish harm on the driver but bot upset about 1 less wrx or sti in existence.
STI driver wanted to keep up with the 'something' that overtook him. His idea was to delay braking - stupid idea.
Always entertaining when this video makes the rounds again and people comment thinking I was chasing after the Daytona Prototype.
@@JMathews88 You were a lot better (faster) in turns than driver of Daytona.
Braking mid corner is not a good idea(talking to the car infront
Why don't they just pave the entire thing... Grass just slides you into a wall. Pavement will at least slow you down so you won't hit it...
Left foot break
Anybody else get this recommended after watching the MightyCarMods vid?
Just like that
0:42 he moved the wheel too much to the right.
Steering was too sudden. Not smooth enough for that turn, along with speed and throttle etc.
Sad
shouldn't off let off the gas
Alternate title. “What happens when amateurs try pro shyt”
When you try and keep with a real race car
all the understeer haha
does he say "Racecar, you suck", or "way to much, fuck"? Kinda sounds like he was blaming the car infront for his crash.
He got a little behind on his braking.
so much for awd
Should buff right out
