  • This is our first test session at Virginia international Raceway (VIR). What an amazing track, I have been excited all winter knowing this was our first race of the season!! We have never run at VIR before and the plan was to use the test day as a chance to get some experience. Unfortunately this was not to be.....you will see in the video that an on-track altercation sent us flying into the grass at 110+MPH (ignore the on screen gauge, I mistakenly set it up for KMH). The ensuing impact in the grass after going airborne caused significant under chassis damage, we spent the next 6 hours thrashing to get it back on track. After welding the k-member back together, making a new exhaust out the remains of the original, reattaching the front bumper cover and replacing the 2 destroyed front tires and wheel we were able to run the last session of the day. Not how we planned to start the season but at least we got running again....more to come from the weekend.
    Thanks goes to Steve Ott for loaning us a welder!!

    Thanks, that made for a tough test day. I believe 3.90 would have been optimal. Unfortunately we blew that up in qualifying and had to switch to 3.70 for the race.

    Bummer that happened and I am sure it was extremely frustrating. I think he could have respected your position on track a little more. What would you normally run for a rear gear on VIR?

    Yer, the other car went for the inside of a closing gap when he could have gone around the outside. Then again you could have seen him coming and reacted according although his closing speed gave you bugger all time to do that. On balance the other car should have noted his relative speed and taken more care when passing.

    Looked like you hit oil or something else slick on track with how suddenly you lost the rear end. There was also another car behind you that seemed to go off as well?

      The other car tried to pass me on the inside and hit my LR bumper, that’s what caused the spin.

      @@tisracing9928 with all due respect, and yeah, I'm going to be an armchair race driver here lol, but it doesn't look that way to me. Firstly he overtook with space to spare, as there was a good foot if not 2 feet (30cm or so) between the two of you, and secondly you didn't start going into the spin until you hit the rumble strip. The way I see it you got startled by him, and lifted off the accelerator, then braked, all while turning left, thus putting the weight of the car on the front right wheel and just before the rumble strip you accelerated on a car that was struggling with rear traction because all the weight is on the front right. As soon as the front left wheel hit the rumble strip, extra drag pulled that wheel in, encouraging the car to turn even more to the left, much like when you hit a puddle with only one side of the car, it pulls you toward it, which put even more weight on the front because it acts like a braking force, and then you accelerating with little weight on the back wheels, and the car out of balance, encouraged the spin. My 2 cents.

      I did not see the other car. The passing car is 2 classes above myself and the other car so I guess I wasn’t expecting anyone to be there. That corner is definitely not a 2 wide corner. Worst part, that was the first session on a test day.

    why you no use 2nd gear?!

    • @SI0AX
      @SI0AX Před 2 lety

      Many times the track and final drive gearing can make the lower gears slower to use because you have to downshift and then quickly upshift the constant shifting makes you waste time and more prone to screw ups. Downshifting to 2nd gear in a high torque car usually requires you to give more throttle input and do it a bit slower. You can see how his downshifts are slow, it's not because he is slow ,it's because the car transmission is beefier and won't work with quick downshifts like a 4 cylinder Honda can.

    I'm watching a lot of these vids lately. In this one it looks like the overtaking car is well past while the driver that crashed is off the throttle. The car that crashed is holding just fine right after the other car passes. Then he hit the throttle at the apex and lost the rear. You can hear the revs climb as the rear loses traction while he is hard on the throttle.

    This is hard to read . Driver input was off the throttle in a corner that some cars won’t call a corner but with high speed all should be good , so my guess is jumping back on the throttle right at the exact time the other cars past pushing air over like wash and upsetting the car. These cars where close . But ? It’s like wheel spin driver error in the wet at this speed . I can’t pick it . ‘Unlucky’ for mind.
