Why People Love Honda's B16/B18 So Much

  • All the old Civic, Integras, and CRXs are great and enjoyable cars, but nobody would give such attention would Honda not produce such a gem of an engine as the B series. With the Japanese precision and quality, it was able to produce an incredible power per litre and match even bigger engines of European and American brands. This is a story of the B16 and B18.

    It is mind blowing that Honda built a 200hp VTEC four cylinder engine in the early 1990’s, while other Japanese companies were still using V6’s or Turbo 4’s to make 190hp. Even American V8’s only pushed 220hp.

      As a result of high power/displacement ratio, torque is pretty much non-existent.

    • @zmaxdudeonline7854
      @zmaxdudeonline7854 Před 2 lety +17

      Most V8's in America are more intended for torque or smoothness. Not for the power. The few V8's actually being used for power put out a good average of 3-400 hp. Not down playing Honda of course, absolute legends

    • @MrAnonymousRandom
      @MrAnonymousRandom Před 2 lety +13

      VTEC engines rely too much on extending the red line to achieve high HP numbers. You won't be able to rev that high in every day driving conditions. There's also the issue of low torque.

    • @trackshun
      @trackshun Před 2 lety +8

      @@MrAnonymousRandom ehh, true, but not necessarily in thiss case. Throwing a 4cyl 200hp all motor engine in say, a mustang chassis, is stupid and overall would have the most negative torque/weight ratio of all time. But the thing about the 4cyl is the chassis’ that theyre used with. So theoretically, a 4cyl engine will perform (at least torque wise) to the standards of the owner trying to push power, whilst still maintaining high horsepower numbers. Vtec engines originally came N/A, therefore the vtec system naturally made more power as well as extended the rev range. As for torque, those small engines that love to rev up high, quickly through the powerband, don’t need this torque to match the hp acheived. And as for not being able to drive it everyday, there’s nothing that sleeves, e85, a fluctuating cooling system, and a good tune can’t do.

    BEFORE I even watch the video, I'll tell you why I always wanted one, why I bought one, and why I was right to love it in the first place.
    - They output a lot of power for their size. Like seriously a lot. 100-130HP/L is common.
    - They sound like they are gonna rip themselves apart while they actually outlive everything.
    - The SOUND. No other 4-cylinder comes even close at least in stock form.
    - B Series are actually super fuel efficient engines when driven normally.
    - You basically get TWO engines in one package. Daily Grocery + Monster at your command.
    - Most of them came bolted on to very, VERY enjoyable cars.
    - They were also mated to super-sweet close ratio gearboxes.
    - You can modify them to ridiculous levels.
    - They are as easy to work-on as it gets. I actually work on mine myself. (I'm not a mechanic)
    - NINE THOUSAND RPM.
    Plus the number one reason for me, which won't even bother most people, but still, definitely the No1 reason for me:
    These engines were made by Honda, and they were the LAST engines Mr. Soichiro saw before he left this world.

  • @CyroTheSpider
    @CyroTheSpider Před 2 lety +169

    In the 90's HONDA, you'd get a hatchback with the same power as most turbo engines at that time. Because of no turbo and FWD, the car would be incredibly light, so more acceleration. The car also felt incredibly responsive and the torque delivery was consistent throughout the whole rev range.
    And then there's the suspension geometry of those old hatchbacks. You'd essentially get double wishbone suspension, which, again is unheard of in a FWD car. Because of Honda's meticulous suspensions tuning, you'd get a car which would very gently oversteer (not understeer as most FWD cars), giving you more rotation in the corner.
    Nothing comes close these days to old Hondas if you also factor in how low priced and reliable these cars were.

    • @kasuraga
      @kasuraga Před 2 lety +8

      Yup~! I have a 90 integra 4 door and one of the nicest things about it, is with a decent but basic coil over setup, you have a REALLY nice neutral balanced car. Just a hint of understeer, but with the ability to get just that bit of oversteer to give it good rotation around tighter turns. even the B18 nonvtec engine is really good with some basic bolt ons and tuning. Really good torque and power for the size. They're really nimble cars.
      They're also the EASIEST cars to work on. Everything is pretty simple. You don't run into a lot of funky engineering when trying to work on them, just a few annoying quirks from being a RHD first car (alternator is under the brake master cylinder on LHD cars, making alternator swaps difficult compared to RHD cars)

      Haven't measured the power but should be around 130 hp, it moves the 1 tonne chassis of my 1999 EJ9 really well.The D series is often overlooked over the B series but D series parts and mods are significantly cheaper in my experience and they get wonderful gas mileage.I have an LSD in my car as well.With some basic OEM strut bars and Koni street shocks it's a really fun package that you can drive like granny and get 40 mpg or hoon it around with good result.

    Great video, especially love the old footage of the factories and Spoon racing in Best Motoring. Forgot to mention the ls motor. The b18a1/b1 non vtec 1.8 liter motors still performed quite well and if you also put a b16 head on them and chip the ecu it was an instant 200hp. A lot of people did this and the b20/vtec and didnt upgrade the bottom end for the higher revs. For that reason a lot of engines got destroyed over the years and now finding any unmolested b series vtec is dang near impossible. And thus the prices for them over here are going through the wazoo.

It currently has 290000ish kms on the original stock head, but the pistons and sleeves had to be replaced with stronger aftermarket ones because of the stress. Nothing broke, I was just scared that it would. I'm glad it hasn't blown up yet considering B series are about as much as K series are now. The only person I know that has a turbo car as reliable as mine owns a 1JZ Toyota Soarer, but it's not as fun as the B series (he's wayyyyy faster in 1/4 mile and street tho, I only beat him at the track.)

When I need to run to the store real quick to grab some groceries , I can jump into my 98 Integra RS with a Jspec itr block ( 219 dyno'd at curch's ) and take it for a spirited drive real quick. I have some clips of it on my channel. The motor and car is raw , nothing but oldschool japanese raw power. A fun , simple , yet powerful car.. Any car guy that would jump into my car would have fun driving it. The K motor is another amazing wonder from Honda , having driven a few high powered set up's , it's the new way to make power. For guys like me that want something more on the " original quipment " side of things , the B motor is perfect. It's not the fastest motor but it's fun , enjoying your car from point A to B is what it's all about.
