- Its been a while since we have seen the ITB M30B35 swapped BMW E28 build and this is why... It is no longer!!! I knifed it in hopes of letting the beautiful M30 live on in something nicer. And as a bonus I discuss my biggest BMW mistakes Ive made in my nearly 10 years in the game! Remember this is MY experiences, may not apply to you!

100% agree about 7-series, nice E32's are worth less than the cost of a basic suspension refresh on them lol. I've spent probably 3x the value of my 750iL trying to make it nice
Yeah, I went into e32 ownership with eyes open, knowing there was not a profit. I love my 7er so that justifies it for me.
Danny your dedication to E32 inspires me!!
@@mattm6720 Honestly if you're buying a decent e32, the usual casual small rust areas, small/negligible issues of course, to just enjoy and drive without resale in mind, they are actually good cars. Atleast from my experience having one with an m30. It's also my first car and yes I have dumped a fair bit of money on refreshing the front suspension (even shot suspension on e32 and e34 still don't feel that bad apart from upper control arm death wobble) and coilovers and wheels. Everything pretty much works on mine besides the ac of course. I don't know about America but seems like the price of these in aus is just starting to slowly pick up in value. E34's auto's are now more valuable than manual e36's here. Yes I could probably make more than i originally bought the car for. But after the parts i put into it.... I'll never make up for it so it'll always be a lose. they are luxury cars but the m30 can still take a beating
Yes my friend the learning process is priceless!! Cheers, George
Completely agreee!
Its great hearing your honest opinions about your experience with bmws i found your video really interesting
Thank you Mike!!!!!
I enjoyed this rearview mirror perspective of your BMW journey thus far. In the great scheme of things, what you have learned (and enjoyed!) far outweigh those regrets you went over. Full speed ahead now!
Completely agree. There is valuable lessons in all things we experience!!! I enjoyed every along the way
a very similar story with my 325e euro stock... want to keep but so much spent and needing to pass... going with the flow is the best way forward... as always man love your work and your style... all the best for the new year!
Thank you man!!!!!
That's what counts, honesty. Thanx a lot again bro. Those are things that we all need to know beleive it or not. Is nice to know what's worth it and what's not so we dont make mistakes when investing. Great info!
Thanks for watching man!!!! Happy to share!
Yeah, I've been working on restoring and modifying a terrible E21 chassis that was just very rotten. Initially I thought "how bad can it be?", but reality where I live is a bit different. First of all, E21s unless some prime looked after examples, have terrible rust protection from the factory and combined with part unavailability, they are quite expensive to revive. Not only that, but I decided to swap an M30 in it, which isn't easy considering this model was not initially intended with a 6 cylinder engine and M30s... Well, they aren't very compact. Anyways, over the several years this project has taken so far it was rust repaired, brakes got upgraded and completely renewed, I got nice recaros for it, shock tower bracing, custom stainless exhaust system and plenty other small upgrades that are supposed to make it in the end a very nice toy. Now I'm waiting for it to be repainted and I will upgrade it with schrick camshaft and lightened flywheel, new piston rings, big end bearings and so on. It has taken me too long to finish this car and I have lost my passion for it.. The only thing that keeps me going is the fact it probably will become quite a nice car to experience. I love the mods you did to your M30. I'm sure you'll find a nice fit for that engine.
Wow, that sounds like an insanely cool build!!! Sorry to hear youre losing motivation, DONT GIVE UP though! That car will be so much fun to drive. Ive still never had an e21!
@@m3nameisjosh464 E21s are like E30s but with character. Objectively speaking they are worse in every metric. Flawed front suspension design that unless perfectly maintained develops a shimmy at 40-60 mph. The rear semi trailing arms, combined with soft springs lead to very pronounced oversteer happy handling, which frightened reviewers back in the day. The steering racks are slow, but actually offer nicer feedback than E30s. Overall, they are fun but the underpowered engines they were sold with in the US hampered their potential and appeal for most enthusiasts. I can't wait to have mine put back together and just enjoy it.
Glad you're keeping the drivetrain! Someone just hit and totaled my 533i so I'm looking for a shell once insurance pays me out. Keeping my m30b32 drivetrain on motronic 1.3 and other stuff such as interior and wheels. Actually just uploaded a video about it you're interested in checking it out.
Can't wait to see your itb drivetrain in a chassis again! Was prepping my e28 for paint and had already painted the engine bay, so I get to do that all over again on the replacement shell lol!
Aghhhh man that sucks:(((( sorry to hear. But buying the car back and keeping parts is the best idea!
There's less and less of them every year. Nice hearing you talk your mind on your BMW experience.
Thanks for listening!
You'll find out that the experience was worth it and down the road you'll be in the right position for something great that makes this bump in the road just look like a step leading up to the big successes
You’re right man!!
Insightful, thank you.
Thanks for watching!!!
this is the kind of content we’re all here for
I appreciate that, almost didn’t post the video
as a pretty tall and sorta wide guy, i found the e32 735i/5 to be the only BMW from the 80s-90s i could comfortably fit in w/ passengers, with a manual.
i got one w high mileage, but the top end was rebuilt recently. Needed a suspension refresh but i was always putting a lemforder kit on whatever i got (still steering to the right a little :/ ), past that it seems to be pretty straight. did big brake upgrade, e60 shifter, shouldn’t take much to call it “done” from now
was talking to my mechanic he said labor for ITBs should be
Makes sense being the largest of the chassis at the time! Sub 1000 sounds like a stretch to be honest, but again the cost of parts is really the bulk, install not too bad. Id say all the NA mods would definitely be worth it for fun factor! Dont worry this setup will live on!
One of your most interesting video's. Greetings from Greece.
Also i have a question. I am about to swap an M50B25TU on an E30 316i facelift car. The ECU that the guys sells me with the car is a 413 silver tag. Can i make it run with this or do i certainly need the red label 413 ecu? Thanks in advance.
Thank you for watching!!
I've had my manual E32 for 20 years. It was a very good full history example and I've kept it good and maintained it fastidiously since - it's better than when I got it. It's worth maybe 5 grand on a very good day, no way I'll sell it. Most of them are sheds now and I wouldn't buy another.
We've all been there with projects which is why I very rarely do them now!
Sounds like the nicest E32 around!!
thanks for all the info and transparency! selfishly im still praying that you one day do a series on an E38 even though you hate the 7's ha ha
If the right one arose I would do it but until then dont hold your breath! 840 series will be the closest thing till then!
you’re a legend 🫡
If could have my way with my 533i e28, it would cost way more than it's worth to me.. I respect your decision and understand, I put myself in the same position.
Easy to get there😩
One thing that sticks out to me about the story are you describe taking a loss on a car vs profit. When we are young and we are enjoy what we’re doing we don’t put enough emphasis on time.
If you spent more than 1.5 days on that first seven series you had then it was still a loss. I think as you go forward and deal with more expensive cars, there will be more wiggle room to compensate your actual time. When you decide that a car is not worth taking a loss on, and then you bury yourself into more time dismantling it, even if it’s only two days of work. You just lost that time you could’ve been working on something else. I built many cars also over the years and I learned this the hard way. The market is on a real low right now so it’s a good time to get something more in the 30 K range to potentially sit on until the market gets back up
Absolutely spot on! I sometimes ignore labor and time because at the end of the day I am doing what I love, which is messing with these cars. But in a strict time/ profit/ loss viewpoint, these cars became even greater losses because of the time into them!
Sounds like you learned a lot of good lessons in your BMW ownership.
I’ve learned lessons worth a lifetime in these 10 years!
I know you do classics josh. But just flipped and fixed a 2001 BMW 330i sport package for 6k (made 2500$ after fixing a huge list of issues making it perfect) an 04 325i e46 sport package (similiar list) and I just bought a 2011 BMW X5 Sport n55 turbo all clean title for 5500$ getting that fixed up and sell it for 11k.
E46s have made me good money, e90s and e70s. and threw in an e92 m3. Love this BMW game. Drove my N54 out to discovery bay CA today to pick up the X5
Goood to know, may be worth checking out newer chassis for money opportunities
@@m3nameisjosh464 hell yeah man would love to see some
Newer ones but love your classics too bro keep it up. M3 josh blowing up ⬆️
@@startingtech3900 thank you bro🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
Are all the e46 your flipping manual?
8:51 7 series point I agree with. I've made money on all of mine. But only because I got em like 500-1000 besides 2. (2500, and 3500) I broke even on the 2500 740i msport , but made like 7500 on my black e38 750il parted it out cuz the person I got it from had a shop redo the entire car but finger tight. So a lot of parts were new. (OH one was free, but that was a super big pos)
But theyre too much work, and require too much money. Then the ones that are fully redone properly are super expensive. 15-30k and if u buy that no one will ever buy it for what you spent on it.
Glad my experience isn’t just applicable to me man! Thank you for sharing!
This is me with my ls e36.
I like it, but I was mislead when I bought it, so $1500-2k fix turned into $7500 . So now I have to take a loss (which is cool) but I got it to where it's at and now i don't want it anymore lol.
One of those better off keeping cars!
Great video, thks for sharing, qk question on my e24 my fuel pump went bad I just replaced it with original oem, also the secondary pump to and the fuel filter. She runs for a half an hour then she starts to stall. I kinda stuck in what wrong with it any advice would be much appreciated.
I had this issue with my e12 and it was a rusty gas tank, full tank it would run fine, once that level went down or load increased the rust would be sucked into pump and clog it causing stalling, check that tank!!
Will do ✌
I was here earlier but I’ll take my spot in third now
😩🫶🏽
boss 10/10 video
😫🫶🏽
That’s actually a very short list of regrets for a whole decade!
I would agree!! Obviously theres been little things here and there but those are the big ones
On one hand I understand where you're coming from - money and time aint cheap to maintain and improve these cars, so if there's no margin for when you go to sell, less people are going to keep them on the road. But, on the other hand, I can't help but get sad when hearing the words investment or flip on these cars. This is not a jab at you or anyone else, it's just the current state of things, just don't know a better place to bring up the conversation.
One of the greatest things about these cars back in the early 2000s/2010s were how affordable they were because the owners of the 'good ones' were true enthusiasts/hobbyists. It didn't matter if money was 'lost' on the car because hobbies cost money. Owners just wanted the car to go to someone that would 'carry the baton' farther, keep the car running well and improving it because we loved them. I've probably spent maybe like 18k on my e28 at this point, the bulk of the investment in 2013. At the time, it was the stupidest money ever spent because the car probably only gained a few thousand in value, but I didn't care. Yes, it's now worth a lot more in 2024 which is great, but at the same time, I feel bad for the 18 year old now that wants a decent classic BMW and is priced out. What do they search for, what do they get? Mixed feelings...I know I sound like a boomer - I'm 33 lol.
No man I completely understand and can feel where you are coming from. I dont like the non appreciateive people that flip these for strictly profit because it takes the fun and accessibility out of these cars. You are spot on, they should be hobbys, and losing money shouldn’t be seen as a bad thing. Trust me my turbo E34, my e12, and many more I have dumped more into than Ill ever get out and I dont care because they are keepers, but on other hand cars like this, I need to be smart with, not on a flip level but on a “keep the channel moving forward level”. I dont work a 9/5. These cars are my career! But the profit funds the passion!
735i E32s are the best way to get a B35 though.
I've learned to never buy an auto, unless it's a nice E30 vert.
Also, never any alpine white cars, they always sell for 20% less than any other color.
True that is correct. Cheapest way to a B35 now a days. Interesting on the Alpina white! I never thought about that
hello, gr8 work mate for this all posts. If u can tell me what is this color number?
Polaris silver 061
I def wanna see more on the frankenmotor v8 👀😁
Working on next episode now!!
@m3nameisjosh464 he'll yeahhh. I pulled my m60 out and ready to degrease it down before I strip it as things like timing covers and ancillaries will be moved across to the new bottom end
Gearbox off to be fully rebuilt so will come back fresh. Can't wait now. Got full standalone management to run it on too so will make good gains 💪 😎
@@clayp.e30_v86 oh man thats sweet!!! Good luck with it!!
So i have the opportunity to jump on a 93 525 touring unfortunately a auto. So far things wrong are power steering and suspension leaks, sunroof shade has fallen down, and trans whines a bit. Would you stil go after it? Im a BMW tech so im.not scared to mess with it at all.
If price is right then yes! Good manual swap candidate
@@m3nameisjosh464 just trading a old bike i have for it. Only concerning but is it does have SLS thats leaking so first thing will be deleting and coils but no biggie
Wisconsin?
I had an e34 touring in alpine white with a manual and turbo. I got it with rose colored glasses. Sun roof didn't work gauges lights barely anything electrical worked had the jack points rusted out. Turbo was shot suspension shot. Some guy sold me a sedan for 250 dollars and I used that one to take the turbo out and use the parts to make everything work again(except the sunroof😢) tried to sell it and no one wanted it. Kid came with a 2001 civic ex manual and I said fk it. Then the civic went in a trade for a 2003 outlander. Sold some parts from the sedan(got 350 from the cats) and even though I really wanted to make that thing work it was really out of my mechanical knowhow and budget. Maybe some day.
Aghhh man!!!
You don't go to McDonald's for the salad, 3 series for the corners , 5 series for the autobahn. 7 series just go buy a benz. E38 are nice looking but it just a heavier e39 without a rear sway bar.
This is spot on really
i’ve had 10 e38s they’re super dope cars but they definitely are not what you want to buy if you’re trying to flip bmws like you were saying lol
Any 7 series is a hard flip haha
I'm about to buy a 750iL E32. The plan is to manually swap it (6 speed of course), double ITBs, headers, stand-alone ECU, and straight pipes!
That sounds INSANE!!!
Josh are you from Wisconsin?
Chicagoland
I’ll take second
Appreciate you!

HAHHA id say fair! By European standards probably a good price though!
be happy you have a manual! M30's are really solid engines. You British are really lucky. You guys have tons of manuals in any car model for cheap as. In aus, we have f$ckall decent cars and definitely fuckall parts for em. I want to manual swap my 730i but i haven't ever done one or have the experience, and after watching the the e34 manual swap vid, looks daunting and would probably cost a fortune and a headache, better just to find a manual e34 :(
@@amero3577 I know it would probably cost a fortune to import but there’s so many 730 manuals in the uk 🇬🇧 735’s with manuals too
Sounds like this was the black sheep 🐑 of joshes fleet lol 😂
Oh it most certainly was!
Only thing worse than 7 series is v8 e53 x5s.
I wouldn’t dare touch those

If it was a 535 maybe but 528 I don’t think so
Agreed
Good thing I didn’t buy my e38 for profit otherwise I’d sell it on the spot
