I agree 💯 %... car tires are for cars ❤

Makes a lot of sense to me about the tires. I just had 8K on my tires, so I have some time left until I need to change them.

I respect your opinion John, but my experience has been quite different than yours. The biggest handling improvement for my F3 came from changing out the front stock Kendas to Continental car tires. The Elka shocks I added didn't make it feel as good as the new tires did. I put a Yokahama in the back and that improved it even more. I could never brake these tires loose no matter how hard I tried. The 4 ply car tires vs 2 ply Kendas allowed lower air pressures and better comfort. Cheers!

Thank you for sharing your logic about the tires, John! As you said at the end, everyone is free to use whatever kind of tires they want. I am sticking with the tires that are designed for the Can-Am... Though this time I am putting on a set of the kanines because I was finally able to get my hands on some. With 72,000 mi, I am on my third set of front tires and these will be replaced in April. I didn't get the normal mileage out of the last set because of our trip to Alaska which chewed up all my tires😂.

Well John , what you are saying about the Kenda tires is spot on . my Dad always told me that they make an owners manual for a reason as to what to use on any given vehicle or product. I say the same thing should be said about the all of the different aftermarket exhausts the owners manuals are made with data to get the best and safe performance out of any product on the roads great Video John

Most Motorcycle tires wear out at 7k, i don't know why people complain about Spyder tire longevity. People are smarter than engineers, they should make their own bike🎉

Well John, I value your video and you opinion on the Kenda tires, I certainly have been back and forth on this subject. The over 11K miles you experienced on the rear tire pulling a trailer and two up much of the time is impressive. I hear, or read, that the Kenda KNines are even a better tire. Kudos!

The birdie was saying hey Barb and Bob come back and see me again. No car tires. We are about to replace our rear tire when we get to Indiana. A lot of good information in this video to help people think about what they should be putting on the spyder

  • @SpyderWayne

I'm looking forward to hearing more about the longevity of the newer Kenda Kanine KR20 tire, the only "authorized" replacement tire for the Spyder. When Kenda first announced their release of the Kanine KR20 tire, they also claimed it is a significantly lower cost tire than the original Spyder tire (which is true) but they also claimed it will last longer, and I hope so. I've stuck with Kenda tires, but it sure would be nice to get 15k to 20k miles on the rear tire. John, I think most Spyder riders agree with you. I've rarely seen a car tire on a Spyder, even though you'll see or hear about on CZcams or other social media.

I run federal formozas on the front and a Kuhmo on the rear. My 2015 F3 has 50,000 miles and handles so much better with car tires. I get roughly 15,000 out of the rear and the front will probably last 50,000. i’m frugal so I mount the tires myself and do all my own maintenance. One thing I’ve noticed about most spyder owners is they must have more expendable income than I do and take their machine to the dealer for nearly everything. 💰💰💰

  • @SpyderRichard

I managed to get 25 000km (15 500 miles) on my stock Kenda rear tire when the trained service technician at my CanAm dealership said it was time to change it as it had reached the treadwear indicator. Safety is paramount for me and Lisa when we ride; I trust the trained technician and the engineers who came up with the proper specs for the tires, I am getting a new Kenda put on when my Spyder comes out of hibernation in early April. And that's my penny for a thought! Cheers John!

I went back and forth on what tire to put on our Spyder. I finally decided to stick with the kendra. I just this week had it replaced at Ride Now Power Sports here in Daytona Beach. Out the door, it cost me $227.90. I had 12k+ miles on the original. Sound advise/opinion again John.
PS don't fly the drone when you visit. The community is a no-fly zone, and we have our own airforce. 😂

I’ve always found it interesting to hear the argument from someone who spent $30,000 on a motorcycle or Spyder complaining about the price of tires vs longevity issues. I sold a Goldwing to get my Spyder and was always similarly amused at the same issue and ongoing arguments in the Wingworld regarding going to the “Darkside” with a rear car tire for longevity/cost considerations. Hell, I even saw similar arguments over oil filter costs. To each their own but, like you John, I’ll stick to the OEM tires.

kenda also put out upgrade tires that are can am - brp approved. I had them on my 2018 rt and wear was really better.

Just replaced the rear at 9K when I had the countershaft sprocket recall done. About what you paid. Without a doubt the most controversial topic on all the forums.

  • @beanoil
    @beanoil Před 4 měsíci +2

My experience has not been like yours. Rears last about 6k, maybe 8 if lucky. Mostly center wear down to nothing while the edges could go much longer. They actually balloon at speed because they only have a couple plies. There are car tires that are very acceptable for the Spyder. They are "J" rims, car tires are designed for "J" rims, so compatible. No one would tell you, ever, that you must replace your OEM tires on your car with tires of the same type or manufacturer because they are compatible with their design of ABS or traction control.
Now I will agree that the on board Nanny does figure into this, but... With a car tire and it's increased ability for traction and wear, the Nanny will kick in more often. CanAm doesn't want to wind up in court with someone suing them about the Nanny protecting them, and it failed. They need the defense of a non spec tire to cover their defense. They put on tires that won't annoy it because you'll get out of it before the computer takes over for you. Not to mention repeat business a couple times a year if you ride much.
My last tire change... 99.00, free ship on the tire, 35.00 to mount, 10.00 for balance beads. Did the work myself. I expect 35k out of it.
There is enough room for all of us, if you like the Kenda, cool, keep on running it. I'll stick with what I do.

John I have admit that your theory on tires make sense to a certain degree. Where I have to disagree is where you say these boys and girls with degrees absolutely know what is best for the product. Many many times they have gotten it wrong and have a tendency to over evaluate what is actually needed to make something safe. Sometimes making a product available only at their companies dealerships at inflated pricing

I have been wondering about the tires on my Spyder.
I have a 2023 Spyder RT Limited and had to change out the rear tire at 15000 km.
I thought maybe that was a bit soon and should do some research before I change them next time.
I think I will stay with what Can am recommends.
Also wonder if the new tire helped out when i hit a deer on the highway last week
I was going 100km/hr and did not have a chance to break before I hit the deer.
The Spyder handled it very well, never lost control, just pulled over and had to get a tow truck.

No problems with a car tire on the rear. No difference in handling.
