Mesabi Miner "near-grounding" departing Duluth 8/29/2021

  • Take a right at Pier B! For some reason, the 1000ft Mesabi Miner was not able to negotiate the turn into the Duluth shipping Canal Sunday afternoon and stopped to realign with the canal. There could be any number of reasons such as small boat traffic, mechanical failure, strong currents, etc --- all speculation at this point.
Glad to see them quickly get back on course without damage.

I sailed for this company over fifty years ago, I can guarantee that there was a mechanical issue that delayed the turn at the right time. The individuals that are in control are Not playing computer games, they are True Professionals, give it a break people! 🤯

Was stationed in Duluth '76-'78. Had to wait at the bridge countless times for traffic. They had an open house when it was christened. Unreal how big it is, and it still looks good and it's nice to see that it's still plying the waters of the Great Lakes forty-four years later.

Despite what some armchair captains might say, they did a good job of saving the situation. The current there is often tricky and that turn is more difficult than it appears, especially with 60,000 tons of cargo on board. Seems like we get one miss (or near miss) each year, on average. Hopefully no more for 2021!

My wife thinks I'm mad, but I like seeing the ships come and go at Duluth, men at work being productive. I'm an Aussie and not familiar with the Great Lakes so I'm just guessing that they're big enough to be tidal, especially Lake Superior. So if that is true I can imagine that on a incoming tide the current would be working against the ship turning towards the canal. I can imagine the cap'n gritting his teeth and muttering 'come round ya big bastard'.
