- With sea smoke billowing over the sides of the 1000 ft. American Century, she steamed into the Duluth-Superior Harbor as the crew deiced the deck on a below zero evening.

I'm a Ship Nerd,,,,,and as I watch this from a warm bed with my cat, I can't believe there's people out there, in these ships,, IN THE ICE COLD WATER,,,,,YIKES..stay safe and warm..

Really cool video! At the beginning, when the American Century is approaching the harbor entrance with those clouds swirling about it, it looks like a ghost ship emerging from the fog.
Amazing. Like the ship's bridge dressed up with holiday lighting. Easy to take for granted these folks who brave the cold and elements to deliver shipments..hope they stay safe and sound in their travels.

Literally a brillaint idea that the lights on the bridge ends project the ships path on the water. No guesswork on where the ship is pointed. First time I've seen that.

We saw her come in on ships camera live. During more pleasant weather people who live in the Duluth area will stand along the sides of the ship channel to watch these huge ships come into the Duluth harbor. Often times the Ships Captain will give a salute with his ships horn. Merry Christmas everyone.
the horn is for the bridge, but its supposed to be 2 long three short. but they simplify it with one long and two short.

Being a “ Saltie” that is excellent ship handling of such a long ship. The “square” stern lends itself for quick turns.

@@petercoull9082 The American Century is not a saltie, She is designed as such, and she has been working the upper Great Lakes all her life... They began changing the traditional Great Lakes Style to the Ocean type a number of years ago.. Have a safe and Merry Christmas there Peter...

For a minute, I was like... "deiced" What's "deiced"? ....Oh. :D These ships are breathtaking. Ever since I spent a week on the St. Lawrence seaway 14 years ago, the breathtaking size of these large vessels has held a place in my conscious that makes me appreciate them in a way I never could if I hadn't seen them with my own eyes. I saw one or two 800 footers, so adding another 200' to the visual is hard to fathom!

I have an aunt and uncle that lived in Duluth for several years and would take us down almost every time we visited and it was so cool watching these ships come in and it's amazing how loud the horns are in person
This is so relaxing I miss hearing the horn blast in the harbour I miss Duluth I think I'm going to have to visit again soon

Having been in the navy I’ve heard a few ship horns but I can tell that was the throatiest one. I would love to have that one mounted on my house and everytime these kids drove by with their bass thumping garbage rattling my windows give them a couple toots and see how they like it.

Those cameras are on 24/7, send a ship. I've seen a Norwegian freighter built in 1949 and some from the Mediterranean countries but never yet a British. Perhaps they're more comfortable up in Canada

I'm from Delaware and I never understood why a lot of US merchant ships are registered out of Wilmington De. Anyone on here know ?
Possibly for business purposes (?) Lots of corporations have their headquarters in Delaware, might be something to do with taxes.
Tax reasons I believe Delaware has more ships registered there than the rest of the country

With it being so cold and ice is forming how long before this current shipping season ends and they all take their winter break? Any ideas?
The Soo Locks close on the 15Th of January so that closes shipping on Lake Superior, The lower lakes which is Michigan, Huron and Erie have some shipping then the locks open again on 15th of March.
