- In the defense of the Bridge, they did the lift and the Coast Guard small boat was just sitting there. I don't really blame him for "putting his foot down"

Beautiful sound when a person can hear a MASTER SALUTE & a CAPTAIN'S SALUTE during a bridge lift.
True!
What a GREAT, melodious horn. It must have shook the buildings of downtown Duluth! The fans watching yelled their approval too. Block has arguably one of the best if not The Best!! Nice ship a favorite.
Indeed, a great set of horns on the Ship!
If you're standing in Canal Park, it rattles your core!
Great video of the Joseph L. Block.Thank you Paul.
Thanks!
A very good video, thank you for this Video
You are welcome!
Nice gruff, baritone signal 🔊
Pretty vessel ⚓✨ Great video 👌
I do like the Block's Horns! They always treat the people on the Piers well!
That was great! Thank you!
Thank you, great footage, beautiful day, beautiful boat/ship
Glad you enjoyed it
Awesome salutes!! The sound of the ship horn and aerial lift bridge could be heard a long way. I remember when l could hear ship's horns where my grandmother lived on Oneida St.
You are right! Especially if the wind was blowing West, or no wind. I can hear the salutes of the ships from my house over the hill.
Yes beautiful precise salute, Bravo,🤗🌟
Many thanks!
Great catch. You always get the unusual and unexpected. 🤩🤩🤩
Thanks Greg. 😊
Beautiful.
Thank you!
Funny! The bridge operator must not have noticed that the USCG boat had started to move. He was probably watching for the fishing vessel to clear so he could lower again.
It did shock me a bit, although the Coast Guard boat did not start moving until the last moment. Seemed like they were going to take a run at it.
That's pretty nice. Seems like all we ever get is Phosphate Ships. Maybe be an occasional banana boat. Thanks for the Vid!
Lol, now you made me look up phosphate ships, already know about banana boats.😆
I've only heard one ships horn, was many years ago in Port Huron MI, was coming from Sarnia in a heavy fog, was an awesome blast !!
Anyone on the water was quite happy for that horn I bet!
@@PaulScinocca Sir I can't tell you how much I appreciate and enjoy your channel !!
She's a great boat to ride and work on.
I will say, from my viewpoint, the crew does always looks happy when they arrive and depart
If you are suggesting the CG Skipper should have raced with the lowering bridge you're out of your mind. Once it was traveling down he is obligated to yield.
I am suggesting nothing of the sort.
The title definitely matched the video. Great job again, Paul, thanks a lot . Coast Guard boat should definitely have moved faster good call ! Take care 😊🍁
Thanks Jay.
Wow, there sure is a big crowd today! Have classes started at the University of Minnesota Duluth?
Soon they are moving in, I think next week ?
I love how so many people over there go to watch the ships, yet here in England, most people aren't remotely interested in much at all now.
They are beautiful though.
Interesting. In Duluth the ships are a major tourist attraction. That and the leaves up the shore turning color in the fall.
@@PaulScinocca Where I live is the busiest cruise port in the UK (sometimes about 10 liners over a weekend, and we get some really interesting stuff in port. At the moment we have three warships from European countries, we've had Submarines, and even the Liberty ship Jeremiah O Brien in the past too, but people really can't be bothered. It's very odd.
I could sit here all day just watching, thank you I love the program
Thank you 😊
Beautiful !!
Thank you!
now that's a GREAT horn
USCG Boat: You forgot to ask: Mother, May I? Now why do you suppose that bridge tender got reassigned to a tiny bridge in Prudhoe Bay, Alaska? No bridges in the Aleutians?
There was room for both of them to pass
You snooze, you lose...
The USCG vessel should know at Duluth Harbor size matters...💤😴😖
LOL!
😛 I negotiate Atlanta traffic dailey .. I need that beautiful horn .. !!
That shot is so smooth, are you on a scooter or one wheel?? Looks great! Great channel!!
Thanks! On a bike.
I thought the same thing and I heard the throat clearing 2-3 times and I also wondered How it was so smooth,. now I know.@@Bebtelovimab
Block has a nice sounding horn to my ear.
I agree with your ear 👂 😁
I'm curious about the decisions that ships make to go under the lift bridge rather than going to the other harbor entrance that doesn't have a bridge. Do you know why they choose one way over the other?
Distance and time to the dock, if they are going up river, it adds about 4 miles to the trip if they arrive via the Superior entry. If they are going to BN-5, it's just on the other side of the entry.
@@PaulScinocca Thanks, I didn't realize there was such a mileage difference.
@@PaulScinoccaplease answer a question for me too…..wouldn’t it be more efficient to build a bridge that doesn’t require being raised in a high ship area?
@arribaficationwineho32 it would. But not possible with the building layout in the downtown area.
@@PaulScinocca thank you
so the bridge controls the harbor. are there alternate routes out to the lake? what happens if the bridge fails to open (ie power failure, brakeage)?
About 6 miles southeast of the Aerial Lift Bridge there is another ship canal in Superior, WI called the Superior Entry. There is no bridge of any kind at the Superior Entry.
Do you have a video with information about the bridge on it? If so, how can I find it?

A couple of videos when I was able to ride up and down for work.
... just a landlubber here ... but thank you for posting ...
you're welcome!
Someone on Joe Block must have relatives or friends living in Duluth because there is always shouts and greetings going back and forth or someone holding a sign pretty much every time they sail into the harbour
I know of 2 friends of the crew for sure, I do think you are correct.
Don't do as I do, do as I say? I wouldn't want to get in the way of the Block. You could get crushed, and they wouldn't feel a thing! 🙂
LOL, how true!
OH nice double salute good horn
Thanks! they do treat the fans well!
The "Just Stop Oil" protesters cannot explain how global shipping will operate without fossil fuels.
They will ride "Electric Cars" and ships will go back to sails. They are Idiots
Do these ships go year round?
Almost, they go into layup around the 2nd week of January. Come back out late March
Oops!!
yup
I figured 230-27+ vassal states = home.
🗽🗽🗽👍👍👍⚓⚓⚓
Thanks Vern.
Did you know the bridge operator refined for not open the bridge for the US Coast Guard.
I do not believe anything happened after this.
Take the Block for a walk
The Block has the best Horn...
Its up there in the rankings, in my book!
Coasties should have asked the bridge to stay up when they were still out by the lighthouses or pushed the throttles up.
Conduire comme un gros Cadillac !
You can’t Denie try US coast guard!!
The bridge horn sounds awful.
You are in good company with that statement. 😁
Great video Paul. Pacing shots and radio add to being part of operations. It's hard to grasp how much tonnage is handled by Great Lakes shipping!
@johnbell3962 thank you John.
I too find the "Bridge Horn" not appealing. my thought is, they want a different sound so folks know it them without doubt.
I'm by no means an expert on this, just my humble thoughts.
@@lectro88 you are in good company with a lot of others. The train horn on the bridge has been a topic quite often in my videos.
You do realize that Putz is Yidish for the male organ and could be viewed as a sexual post by YT algorithm. Probabably best if you change that word to dally.
Gotta get taconite to china
I don't care much for DUMB ('silent') Videos, No Narration as to what is going on, or why it is important?
Is it really necessary, do you listen? Can you hear the info, can you read the info? It amuses me just how rude people are on a keyboard
.. so .. just go away 😎
Interesting day I was up there about a month ago and got "bridged" by the viking Octantus which is what I wanted to video but couldn't didn't see you anywhere rainy overcast but still had a great time awesome restaurants, tons of stuff to do regretted leaving want to come back loved the entire "U.P" & superior now I know my way around I intend to return 🏕🌲🦫🐻🐟🚤🚢🍔🌮
Awesome you had a great time. Too bad our paths did not cross.
