One of the best sounding engine in history in my opinion.
The best turbo'd engine for sure!
I rank it with the 787 rotary.
Greatest engine note in motorsports â„ïž all fun n games til a 5 cylinder shows up
The dual tone song of the 5-cyl (and 10 cyl although less pronounced) is sheer magic.
Absolutely goddamn right.
These classic Quattros still put out one of the best sounds ever when modified, I âonlyâ filmed a replica and it blew me away! so jealous you got to try the real thing đđ»
Someday Luke! Keep grinding đ€đŒ
Your video was epic Luke! Stunning production indeed.
Sounds like an angry zombie from Call Of Duty lol.
I love it, such a mean but smooth sound.
here czcams.com/video/B6PS4oPLgDk/video.html&t at 6:30 the concert starts and the car is street legal here in germany
Yoooo it's Luke! đČ
The greatest era of motor sport never to be repeated
This is seriously awesome. The Carfection 2021 content has been ridiculously outstanding đ€© đ€©
There is something that I have always found to be mortally scary about this car. There's a combination of things. Firstly, there are its looks, with all of that big bodywork on a short wheel base, and the brutality of its gait in the way that you can see the weight being thrown forwards under braking, and then thrust rearwards again under the acceleration of all of that power. Then there's that haunting 5-cylinder wail frequently punctuated by a loud, spinning, scything, piercing whistle. And then there's the fact that it carries the halo of the fearsome reputation of Group B. I find it all to be sinister in a way that can be quite troubling, in exactly the same way that a small child is irrationally afraid of monsters: although I've never seen one of these in action other than on video, the monstrous experience feels very real to me. I would mentally have a problem stepping inside one of these, and yet I hold it up as one of my most hallowed motorsport icons, just for the way that it never fails to make an impression.
Nice writing bro. Keep it up đđ
You should be an author
This is something it will never happen with a 36 years old Tesla...this enthusiasm and this nostalgic feelings! What a machine!
So true. hate the way the world is progressing. Shame politicians and corporate elites are destroying the very essence of freedom and cars.
This 1985's beast kill off the new cars â@@anishrnjn
How they ever managed to drive these at full speed between crowds of constantly moving spectators I will never fully understand...
one sentence was:"you gotta pretend they're bushes"
I suspect the slightly front heavy 55:45 weight distribution was caused less by the engineâs position, and more because of the steel balls of the driver. What a time for rally. What a time.

If you meet someone say they do, they may be lies personified ;)
Amen.
Henry makes driving a toaster an emotional experience, so seeing and hearing him wax poetic on the S1 is just outstanding.
Beautifully shot, scored and edited, too. As always.
Class comment! đ
Love it.
That's got to be one of the best sounding engines ever conceived. Nothing can sound like a 5 cylinder. Also, I love Henry's shirt.
one of these banging through gears has been my ring tone for about 12 years
link!! â»
Hahaha! I use a 787B, which is more "vibrant" if you want...I've used lots of car sounds as ringtones too!
Something tells me Henry is going through his bucket list of cars to drive and I have to respect that đ
@JD Turner They will still force them upon us if we allow it. Last two years have been most educational.
Iâd never grow tired of listening to the whistle of that compressor surge
Audis (or most/all rally cars) did not have blow off valves. You're hearing compressor surge.
That 5-cylinder turbo engine is pure perfection. Love it. â€â€
as someone unfamiliar w the Audi Quattro rally model designations I definitely read this as season one episode 2
RAC Rally 1985 - I was one of the stage marshals and bore witness to Hannu Mikkola's Sport E2 passing by me within a short distance when its exhaust exploded spitting out flames a good half metre behind. Unforgettable, and my all-time favourite car.
0-60 mp/h in 2.5 seconds............ON GRAVEL........35 years ago! Kinda sums it up really
Awesome to see legendary rally driver Stig Blomqvist in this video! Iâm proud to say we are from the same town in Sweden :)
So so nice to hear that Quattro chirp again, takes me back to the Welsh forest on what was then the Lombard RAC Rally. Epic piece of film Henry. đ„
"I wouldn't know more than 3 people who could drive that car fast." -W. Röhrl
My first memory of a rally was when I was about 5 or 6 with my dad and seeing these cars come through the stage just sparked a life long passion!
They all sound a million times better when you are a few feet from the side of the track the noise and smell it's just pure emotion for the senses! I'd give me left kidney for ten minutes in the S1!!
What a film. Phenomenal amount of work put into this. Just wow. This is TV quality content for free. You guys deserve a pay day for all this work.
Those builders were having the time of their lives everytime Henry passed by them!! I envy those chaps.
Amazing content as always, thank you.
The four rings stir my soul, a child from the 80âs and now an owner of an A6 quattro.
My highest of regards to the absolute monsters that the Group B era drivers were. I simply cannot imagine
what it must've been like to thunder through small roads, dense forests, dust storms and, of course, crazed people lining the stage. To be able to drive one of these mechanical monsters must've been an absolutely surreal experience. God, I get chills when thinking about that era, even if I wasn't born to experience them. Mr. Catchpole, your videos are absolutely stunning, and they are true gems of the automotive world. Also, HUGE props to the Carfection team for shooting such spectacular shots and incorporating beautiful editing. Be it the intro with the TT, Quattro and the S1 E2, or the binaural audio ending for the two five-cylinder engines. I, from the bottom of my heart, thank you for making this video.
I've seen journalists dive the most expensive, fast and rare cars but i never really felt anything, this, however was the first time ive ever been jealous of someone getting to drive such a machine! Thank you for creating this video, modern footage of this majestic beast is hard to come by and we all appreciate the work you guys do!
I marshalled at Rally Australia in 95 or 96 (getting old can't remember!) and had Stiq Blomqvist retire near my marshall point. I offered to give him a lift back to the start of the stage. I'd driven to the stage in my nearly new Celica GT-Four Group A Rallye. He and his co-driver were a bit hesitant getting into the car as it had been raining and they had mud all over their shoes. I couldn't have cared less! How often do you get the chance to drive a rally legend around. He was a great bloke.
I really cannot express enough how much do I love this car, is just my lifetime dream.
Thanks for sharing.
Excellent production - well done to all involved.
I owned an RS2 for 11 years - I made sure it went to a good home.
I now drive an original RS3 - only because they made an in-line 5 turbo.
Itâs great they keep it for their special models too.
I donât think Iâll every get rid of it.
Audi should seriously consider building a Yaris style 1 off for enthusiasts as a branding exercise. 5cylinder obviously.
and lose fuckton of money doing so :D
@@Rentta well all really takes is a TTRS put on a diet & some extra power and a more rear bias 4WD & excessive aero, they have the base car & all the parts. I don't think they would lose money but they wouldn't make much profit.
They haveâŠâŠThe RS3âŠ..donât be swayed by all the critics claims âit understeersâ or âitâs not involving enoughâ as the only criticism of what is a superb car
Itâs merely A few components away from being legendaryâŠâŠâŠif you can actually afford oneâŠ.and drive of course
That would be epic
It's not about direct profit, it's a loss leader and a branding exercise to attract more buyers.
Itâs true the 5 cylinder sound is so evocative. I owned a couple of T5 Volvos, the on Boost sound and performance was utterly addictive. The only reason I donât still have one is running costs! Oh to be a wealthy man... thanks again Henry, nice trip down memory lane.
Goosebumps all the way through the video. Absolute dream drive.
Henry is living the dream of 80s in 2021. đ Please keep going!!
Fab piece which makes my mind boggle trying to comprehend what the drivers back in the day were putting themselves and the cars through flat out on incredibly challenging rally stages. This truly will never be repeated in competitions.
Henry and the carfection team re-enabling childhood dreams once again superb chaps!
Iâve watched this video twice now and with each viewing I felt transported into the car with you. Now thatâs what automotive journalism is all about and you sir, absolutely nailed it.
I saw exactly the same car at the London Classic Car Show 2020 and it was like a dream come true,it's fenomenal!!!
Thank you Carfection!
Being from the USA đșđž I've never seen one of these in real life. It would be a dream just to hear this monster đč
Well, that was wonderful. Outstanding Carfection, outstanding Henry, outstanding Charlie.
Henry, what a great video, love the fact the camera angles mirror the vintage footage.
Wow, it had a prototype Porsche PDK gearbox! Must have been completely insane to drive!
Il
Stunning production (as always) guys!
I never really was an Audi fan.. hated working on them if I had to. But this, this is 80s glory. The Lancia Delta is king, but this one set the standard. Respect!
You are a lucky man, Mr Catchpole. Great film, thank you!
Carfection films somehow just keep on getting better and better. Amazing production as always. And the way that thing sounds on boost, amazing.
"I've driven quite a few rally cars". That's a not very humble brag if ever I've heard one. Awesome video as always. I never realised they pur a PDK in these a nice little history lesson.
Thank you Carfection and Henry for giving us this immersive experience of the S1 E2! What a rare opportunity you had to drive this beast, and I will be watching this over and over again in the years to come, I'm sure! The sound of that turbo 5 cylinder has been giving me chills for nearly 40 years!!
The sound, oh man the sound...... so good.
Love my Suby 4 pot rumble but this 5 just sounds so sweet.
I remember seeing these at Goodwood in the 90âs, grown men flocked around it, excited, jumping up and down as they warmed it up. Remember my Dads excitement at seeing it, this car is in that bracket (Brm v16, 787b, mclaren senna v12) the bracket that makes grown men shed a tear or run towards it as soon as they hear it fire up. If you know, you know! đ
This is why I drive an Audi RS3. The history and that 5 pot sound, nothing on the road today comes anywhere near it and no better sound on a rally car either from the SWB Sport. Love it. Just love it. My all time favourite car and so lucky to have seen them race too.
Never knew PDK went this far back, wow
Great work as always you guys, looking forwards to more motor racing heroes~
it actually went even further back. Into the 956 and 962 days.
It was however, not automatic. It was a semi-auto sequential gearbox, something like a modern PDK in manual mode.
Also, such gearboxes are older than you might think. Hillman Minx used something very similar in 1960's (called Easydrive) and Eastern-block tractors (and similar machines) used essentially the same thing since 1970's as pre-selector gearboxes.
Top top content! Well done chaps! Love how these legends of rally are getting some air time.
My dad had a front wheel drive 87 Audi Coupe GT with the manual inline five. I just loved that car. It was so rare in the US. Even the Audi mechanics at the dealer would come to look at it when we went to the shop. People just loved the look and sound. I always wanted a quattro, but I would take that gem back in a heartbeat. He put 230k miles on it. It was a great car.
Another gorgeous and awesome video. This is why I love Carfection.
Great video as per usual Henry đ. Love the seemless shift from the TTRS to SWB Quattro to the S1 Quattro đđđ
You can tell Henry watching rally growing up when he drives group B car, his eyes and spirit just lit up!!! Bravo!!
Yea i love reactions from the heart, he sure was worthy!
Wow excellent content well done to all involved. The sound, music, car etc all on point đȘđŒ
An iconic car that kickstarted a revolution!
What revolution:)
@@joe125ful now what exactly is the drivetrain of modern day rally cars? Say it.
@@satvikkrishna145 Not audi parts..ther is more iconic cars who start next gen rally cars more than Audi.
I just found this channel. I wondered where Henry Catchpole had gone too. One of the great automotive journalists of this era. Knowledgeable and you can FEEL how much he loves cars.
This is the ultimate driver's car with the legendary 5 cylinder sound !Greetings from germany
Ultimate???Try drive Lancia 037 then:)
@@joe125ful not really..
Hardly the ultimate drivers car with its terminal understeer and unpredictable twitchyness. Fast but not particularly loved by those that drove them.
@@byronmills5952 That power, that sound, that brutality -that was a form of beauty..Walter Röhrl!! Of course the car difficult to drive and understeering, no problem for Röhrl ...
@@stefanvogel8255 Its true..much more lighter and agile then Audi get some infos first.
Also car who beat owercomplicated Audi with only powered rear wheels:):)
Where is your tech now...
For me the greatest competition car ever. Thank you for another fantastic video Henry. đ
God damn this is brilliant. Thanks Henry and team.
Absolutely fantastic job guys! And hell of a workout from you Henry, that cycling stamina comes in handy :D
A legend of a car, thank you for the way you portrayed this car. It is legend of my childhood, with your excitement and enthusiasm, and the sound of the amazing Audi engine, was awesome.
Thank you, for you and crew for making my childhood poster come aliveđđ
Carfection absolutely living up to the name!
Absolutely amazing. A legendary car which had legendary drivers. Used to love watching it come through Keilder forest on the Lombard rally.đđ
Group B created some incredible and insane creations. This the T16, RS200 etc. But my absolute favourite due to its crazy looks and heavenly engine/exhaust note was definitely the 6R4. What a beast, like a standard Metro had been pumped full of steroids! So many fantastic cars that came from such a short lived series.
Thank you for this fantastic and unique contents!!!!!!!
When Audi were kings... and led by engineers. The sound of this car is unreal. Up there with the best of all time! Thanks for sharing the experience đ
After you entered the car, I had to turn the CC on, because of that immense growl this legend produces. Exceptional review .
Brilliant film. Keep up the great work!
Thereâs a small LEGO model of the S1. My nephew liked it :-)
lego speed champions quattro s1!!! so sad its lego variant is not in forza horizon 4 :(
Well done man!!! Legend car, and to be in that seat that sting was in!
Carfection content tells you that these guys are real petrol head. They make video to share their passion, not to promote new cars for manufacturers like most other channels
Hagerty is not too bad either.
I watched group B in the day & and it was truly amazingâŠ
The Audi is my ultimate favourite and yes the 5 cylinder noise is brilliant.
You are one lucky man & another great review đ
That looked like bloody hard work đ Absolutely fantastic video đ
Absolutely awesome....cant imagine driving one of these and I have driven a regular Quattro...
Goosebumps. As always đđđ
Beautifully presented!
He has the postercar-smile ;)
Henry's presentation and excellent editing, definitely make this my favourite motoring channel :)
Agreed!!!
Sublime... magnificent car and a fantastic video. Thank you so much.
What an amazing opportunity that must've been! Truly an iconic piece of motorsport history. It blows me away that there's a few people out there who felt the need to dislike this video. Can't find anything to dislike myself!
One of my all time favourite cars and a fantastic video about it! You are very lucky to have been allowed to drive it...
This was brilliantly made!
Awesome vid Henry. You look like you had an absolutely great time. đ
Beautiful video and some history revision. Thanks
I have lost count how many times i have watched this amazing video.
wow... just WOW!
thanks you guys so much for this video.
Wonderful video. My fav car for 50 years now. What a thrill to drive it. Bravo Sir, bravo! And thank you very much for sharing the experience
50 seconds in and this is already my favorite car video đ
I can remember vividly watching one of these through a stage in Bradfordâs bowling park in the evening on the National breakdown rally in 1986 spitting flames about 2 feet out of its exhaust and sounding awesome!
What an amazing video, such an iconic car. It is frightening to drive it in rally games, I can only imagine that's 100x stronger in real life.
Wow what a great little treat of a video đ
Great video! Much respect!
only one word comes to mind - AWESOME, great video as always
Great episode , your smile and horror in your eyes tells the whole story about this legendary monster.
Wow, what a car. I'm tired just watching, I'm sure Henry had to sleep for week after filming đ€Ł Great work as usual guys đ
This guy and Chris Harris. My go-to guys. Great content đ
Oh wow - when I commented below your recent Macca/Porsche/CLK piece that a Group B group test would be awesome, this must have already been in the works... lovely! What an absolute beast - can see the fear in Henryâs eyes when that turbo spools up, he looks like he had a proper wrestling match with this one.
Badass. The one with the PDK box and working Umluft setup still exists in Europe, that thing would be a whole other level to this one that doesn't have either (but is still one of the coolest cars ever!)
Absolutely brilliant đ€©
