1985 Audi Sport Quattro: The Group B Homologation Special

- In Austria in 1980, just a year after four-wheel drive cars became eligible to compete in the WRC, Audi debuted the first Quattro rally car and forever changed the sport. Over the next half of the decade (and onwards, if you count the Pikes Peak specials), these Audis would be subjected to a period of rapid iterative evolution that led to the short-wheelbase Sport Quattro models that helped define the infamously fast and dangerous era of Group B rallying.
The relatively lax nature of the Group B regulations gave rise to a number of downright ferocious cars from Audi’s competitors (most notable being Lancia and Peugeot), and while it was not the most successful nor technologically advanced of these top tier cars by the end of the Group B era, the Sport Quattro is a worthy poster child for the lot of them-being first to the punch has its advantages.
The advent of the Group B class provided manufacturers with practically every leeway imaginable given they adhered to a basic set of limits on the car’s engine capacity, track width, and weight, but in order to race these monsters they had to produce 200 versions for the street.
The result of this requirement was a group of legendary homologation specials like the Lancia 037, Lancia Delta S4, MG Metro 6R4, and Peugeot 205 T16. Audi’s contribution to this lot was the Sport Quattro road car, a 300-horsepower box-flared rally weapon with license plates. In this week’s film we’re joining our host Sam Hancock for a tour through the history of Audi’s paradigm-shifting rally program in the 1980s, as well as through the Swiss Alps behind the wheel of a homologation special that lives up to its purpose.

I also miss the old format. I loved to hear what the owners of the vehicle had to say about their passion for the car, the story of how they came to own it, where passion grew from and what drove them to buy it. I also love that wistfulness of the story telling, intersected with visions of the vehicle being driven through the landscape . This format, whilst well executed, now blends into all of other well executed automobile channels in the World Wide Web. Dear Petrolicious new owners, what made Petrolicious so special is quickly ebbing away, perhaps a reflection on what made it unique in the first place infused with your new energy could drive it further not blend into the background with all the others. Cheers.
Dan Mccann ...nothing to add. Perfectly summarised.
Have to agree with the other comments. While the presenter does a good job, this is not the format that made Petrolicious so special.
Amen 🙋🏾♂️
Sounded like early Top Gear, I enjoyed it
Completely agree. Came to comments section to share the same thoughts.
The second episode in a roll which I actually don't finish because of this reason
Yeah he’s alright but he’s no Chris Harris lol but yeah I loved the old format, such special stories that really showed the connection between man and machine
I must be basic because I really liked this film - unlike the majority of the comments here. Thanks for posting it for free.
I'm not a subscriber of this channel, but I watched a lot of videos they have made, and can say, that this type of videos are more interesting than the old ones. Also the production value feels much higher, maybe it's just me.
@@deividasradziunas3696 I agree, it's a beautifully shot film. Plus, look at that Quattro!
Seriously dude, people complaining about free content. Entitled babies.
I agree
I liked it as well, great to have a new type of video, and seriously good camera work and editing as usual.
I want to hear from the owner, and only the owner on-camera, flaws and all. That short, raw documentary-style is what made Petrolicious so special. Please bring it back.
Not all owners want to be on camera.
Greatest Audi ever made!
yup I agree
100%
Audi 200 20V Turbo though D:
💯, closest to it is the TT RS
I love the cars of my youth . I graduated high school in 1984. The Audi Quattro the Saab 900 turbo SPG The Toyota Supra the Ferrari Testarossa the Porsche 959 God I love that era !
Music is too loud! Can’t hear what he’s saying.
can't hear the CAR!!!
Must be regional...I can hear is speaking voice just fine.
Do you really need to? This isn't Petrolicious.
A Sport Quattro in the Alps, that's a dream right there.
The film is nice, no doubts...but, the old Petrolicious, the owners that talk about their cars with passion...this is priceless...Please, be the Old Petrolicious too
Thanks for the feedback. Just so you all know... this series was filmed two years ago and is just being released into the wild now. It is not replacing 'the old format' which is called 'Made to Drive', it is an addition to it.
@@patdevereux6312 Great to hear! I think that the main tip is: it is an art channel, with cars and motorcycles. Basically, people don't wanna hear numbers and facts, they wanna hear how it is to drive emotionally, what the cars offer to the driver's heart. It is great footage, great sound mixing, maybe is just writing more with the heart than the senses, maybe it is find that balance. I'll come back for more, no doubts! Keep on the good work though!
Too much focus on the presenter....we want the owners talking :)
big talker - big non turbo lag;)
I'm sure I've seen another Petrolicious video of the sport quattro where it is the actual owner commenting. And also one for the ur quattro.
Same here 🙄
Was it Andre Lotterer's? guy is legend
Maybe just maybe the owner didn’t want to be on film or herd
Music needs to be turned down, it makes it hard to clearly hear what he's saying sometimes. Also, it seems like Petrolicious has turned into a knock-off Carfection now...
These are old videos for paid membership..... They're now free.
The music needs to be turned off completely. Far too much unnecessary distraction going on here. I stopped watching after about 1 minute.
This presenter is really gifted. Supremely produced.
Not many cars short of a the Ferrari F40 that evoke this kind of excitment and ellation. This car was magic. Even the gutless Audi 4000 Quatrro we had was incredibly sorted and everything we've driven or owned to date has been judged against it and almost all paled to compare to the Audi's balance, steering and predicability. If you liked this go check Harrys Garage review of this. Its great
Another beautifully shot Petrolicious video. Thank you for helping me get through the day.
Makes me so happy to see a valuable collector car such as this being driven where and how it was designed to be!
I can't watch another one with this guy talking at the camera. No offence to him but this isn't the recipe we liked.
Same here, they killed the formula like Coke did.
@@stephen-john1677 Actually, the previous owner was critical of BLM, so the Twitterati mob made him step down as CEO. Apparently this is the new direction of Petrolicious. Whooptydoo
@@Delta-nl7pi oh wow, I obviously had no idea. That sucks, I guess I'll stick to the old videos, thanks for the info 🙋🏾♂️
this was about the relation of people with their cars, it was what made Petrolicious special, it made a connection with all of us enthusiast. It is sad.
When i was young boy i saw this Car driving in st Moritz and silvaplana myself ! I still remember ! It was red and very loud - my father owned a Porsche 928 These days it was wonderfull time - These picture are like time Travel for me -thank you
What a lovely segment! I was fortunate enough to be a SCCA corner worker in the classic Chimney Rock Hill Climbs. In the mid-80s, Audi sent Walter Rõhrl in a Quattro. It roared up the hill like barely in control, angry beast rocketing toward me. Slung around the 180, catapulted up the hill with BOV popping. Just a brief moment, but I remember every thrilling second. It brought a tear to my eye watching this n recalling, such a powerful brush with legendary!!!
I'm glad to see that snow is still a thing
Nicely done segment on a car that would be a welcome addition to any garage. Props to the owner for this!
My childhood dream...
They just don't make cars like that anymore
Honestly liking this format as a change from the usual documentary style with interviews. Complement each other well :-)
Thanks for the feedback. Just so you all know... this series was filmed two years ago and is just being released into the wild now. It is not replacing 'the old format' which is called 'Made to Drive', it is an addition to it.
What a beautiful back drop for this video, such an amazing and absolute stunning car.
My first car back in 88. Loved that car. Scratch Ticket win = Audi quattro GT coupe.
Would love to watch 10 minutes of that bonnet driving through the snow roads
Such passion in his reporting. That is what this channel is all about! More Sam Hancock please.
Every video every word from now will never compare to the perfection I’ve just watched and listened too
My fave rally car ever and you captured the spirit beautifully
Thankyou 🙏🏴
Beautiful shots, very interesting facts, an overall really nice video to watch!
These videos are not what we‘re here for!
The most beautiful car reviews on CZcams!
Love the new format! The presenter is a great speaker, storyteller, and driver.
If it wasn't for this beautiful car, I would not click on this video. And after watching, that feeling: "Another Chris Harris wannaby"... Not that presenter is bad, or that he said anything wrong, but this is not Petrolicious with warm human stories and normal voice of proud loving owners and their stories that I loved so much. Hope that you will find that warmth and spark of life again! (Maybe if presenter just drives and says nothing?)
As a massive rally fan this is my dream car!
A lovely video, thank you!
300hp in 1985...impressive
Lovely cars! Nice bit of history for sure! :-D
The fact he doesn't stop smiling as long as he is driving it, really says a lot...
Excellent video👍
I really liked it! And your filming skills, wow!
Loved that short wheelbase car... always wanted one... love the wedge shape of that car and the period Celica Supra... have an 02 A4 now... can't beat how the Quattros hug the road...
Love the format, great presenter too!
Amazing presenting!
The people who complain that old quattros understeer clearly have never driven one agressively. They oversteer in the most beautiful way.
Turn the music down!
Turn the music off!
Such a cool car, but that backdrop is Beautiful! 😍
Very informative thanks 😊
Tbh this is so repetitive format...
This channel used to stand out from others because there was a feeling, connection that owners of the cars used to express...
But i think it's vanishing as the younger people tool over this channel 🤦🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️
@Rubedo Alaberti Then WHEN do we get to see the Real Deal again?
The 20v 5cyl is an amazing engine. Always will be.
Nice fim, great format!
Good presentation and camera also good music backround👍
What is it with car shows and their sound engineers?
I'm sure there is a secret cabal of green party musicians with a distaste for petrol engines that finagle their sound engineers in to these shows.
Great Video, thank for the nice story 👍👏
Superb machine nice video
I agree with the comments, although I learned by this film new aspects of this Audi. Alternating the old receipt with this one, would not be a bad idea.
An OMG classic Audi from my 20 something time period.
Where's the owner of this beautiful beast?? Did you guys jump'em and steal his car to do this episode?
Stay with content and style which made this channel so unique!!
great video.
In the old days in the US market, the best description I heard of an Audi was a Volkswagen with a gland problem.
ugh, i hate to agree with the rest of the comments but yes, we like the owners talking. However, that does not mean the film was not good. I did enjoy it for sure. And the scenery, LOVELY! Anyways, you got this Petrolicious.
I actually really like this video format! The presenter is great, the cinematography is awesome, but I think that the music was a bit too loud at times. The audio focus should be on the presenters voice and the cars noises.
Looks much better with the longer wheelbase
i NEED. One of these before i die.
I am not asking for the old recipe,it reached its limits and can't be used anymore, but there is a problem with this one! It needs more true energy, more dirt, more oil and petrol on it and less talking. 60 seconds full throttle of this car through the mountains with just the engine noise and a subtitles of the technical and historical details could handle it all !but this, I couldn't watch it till the end! sorry
If this girlie man held the throttle pedal down for sixty seconds, he'd be part of the geography.
I know I got bored....
9:00 Well said. Only a handful of auto journalists know how to drive the sport quattro the way it was designed by the designers & engineers.
The new videos, are the same as every other channel now. What made this channel different, was solely focusing on the owner and what brought them passion, etc.
Guys Im loving this!!!!! Keep it up, as well as the original Petrolicious content. Its free guys, dont watch it if you dont like it!!!
Audis engineers took my heart with s1 and b5 RS4 baby's. 😪😪😪😪
gran bel lavoro avete fatto. numeri 1
I agree with @TheRealFLX81 et al: too much Sam Hancock. Although Sam is very enthusiastic, it comes off sounding like he's laying it on too thick - like a gearhead version of Robert Irwin. I enjoyed hearing from owners about the passion for their cars/motorcycles.
I doubt Sam has a cock.
Hope you enjoyed the Julierpass with this beast
Whilst I miss the old driver-based narrative format, the presenter does exude a sense of passion and sincerity which is refreshing. It is almost as if @Petrolicious has reached a more reflective and poetic time in its online journey. I know I'm in the minority but while change is hard to swallow, it does grow on you in time.
Also given the circumstances that led to this change, having a presenter narrate the story of the car helps neutralise any unintended driver/owner association with specific causes, political or otherwise.
I think this format is fine and I like the presenter. About the Audi the long wheelbase version is my favorite but both great rally cars.
how is everything so incredibly clean in this video?
If the customer can't drive it as the engineer intended, then tough! Love that statement!
not really fussed about the presenter or the way in which it is presented. For me, its all about that car. The dream, the way it looks, the way it drives, the sound it makes. Needs the original wheels, but hell i love that thing and have done so since I was a kid. While everyone else drooled over the 959, the F40, I was having none of it. Just wanted that Audi..
This seems a bit like a top gear knock off?? Where’s the owner? Why isn’t he talking about it?
Been saying this, I miss hearing from the owner. It's basically Top Gear now 🙄
The car legend, the format not anymore. Please return to the old way of filming these clips..
These are older videos that were exclusive to members and now they are shared for free right? Many people seem to have the impression this is a new thing Petrolicious is trying.
Its because it was an extra to petrolicious, not what we want to see daily... its what we want to see when we want to dig deeper into it, but now we miss the normal videos
Despite others opinions i think the mixing of style is nice.
Spectacular!!!
After getting halfway through the video, I decided to look at the comments to see if anyone else felt like I do. I see many share the same feelings. This format is just like many other car channels and isn't as special as Petrolicious used to be. I can only guess that this format is easier and cheaper to make. It certainly isn't unique.
@Rubedo Alaberti Thank you for the clarification.
Great content as always, beautifully filmed in a great setting with an awesome car .... but I would rather hear the car than the commentator, even tho he did a great job. Keep up the good work.
Flüelapass -> canton Graubünden👍 , from 07:24 it's Davos a lovely ski resort
Great composition, car and location....wow. Yes, it's not in the usual format, but frankly I think he did a great job. I would've loved to see the engine bay though, and maybe just some raw driving/audio. Great film piece though...
This is not the format we want. Top gear is readily available. Why would you eve change it?
Thanks for the feedback. Just so you all know... this series was filmed two years ago and is just being released into the wild now. It is not replacing 'the old format' which is called 'Made to Drive', it is an addition to it.
The only Audi not plagued by understeer
I love this ....... Channel
Их история совсем на другом конце палки 😢, им не нужно доказывать за проходимость…… все помнят их легендарную рекламу в которую никто не верил ❤❤❤❤
Greets to Cresta Garage, Engadin ;D
A lot of people whining in this section. I think this is a good format.
I keep watching the old petrolicious videos instead
This channel is wonderful.
Awesome 👌
Should have took it on a frozen lake to show it flat out
I miss the owner stories and profile. This is just another car review, white noise on CZcams. Unfortunately, Petrolicious has "Jumped the Shark". RIP
Thanks for the feedback. Just so you all know... this series was filmed two years ago and is just being released into the wild now. It is not replacing 'the old format' which is called 'Made to Drive', it is an addition to it.
@@patdevereux6312 Good to know. Thank you for reaching out, I appreciate it.
Awesome
Oh no..... what happened to the Petrolicious that I loved....
The cool silent way they use to portray the vehicles.
Oh great. One of the most unique and inspirational video formats has turned into a top gear clone.
