Drink This Much Water for Good Health and Weight Loss (Surprise Ending)

  • Drinking more water leads to weight loss, right? So many weight loss "experts say this that it seems self-evident. It must be true, right??
The problem is, when you really dig into the research, there are no meaningful studies showing that drinking more water leads to increased weight loss. Water is absolutely essential for human survival and health, but drinking more than your thirst calls for doesn't really seem to have any positive benefit on your health...
I'd much rather you drink ice water than a cola, but the practice of drinking more water hoping it will lead to weight-loss is a frustrating concept that doesn't help. The busy-work of calculating how much water you should drink based on how much you weigh is based on no science, and can distract you from what is really important, the foods that you eat, and the crap that you avoid.

You have great information and I appreciate how you explain all of the medical stuff so that everyone can understand ~ so, huge thanks! My question is can a person drink too much water? I drink, on average, 5 x 28oz jugs of water each day, probably even more than that. Can this harm me? I don’t drink anything other than water, except for an occasion Starbucks. I have hypothyroidism so I don’t waste calories by drinking them. I also check my blood sugars once a week to keep an eye on that ~ my sugars are great. Can’t wait for your feedback, cheers from🏁🇹🇩🇹🇩

The majority of physicians practicing Western Medicine went into this grueling means of earning a living because, like Dr. Berry, they had a deep and burning desire to help people. It is not the docs who lack honesty, as they do their honest best for at least 70 hours per week year in and year out to help people get well and have better lives. No. Not the docs, but instead most of the pharmaceutical industry, the federal medical agencies, the state and National medical associations and so on. Most physicians go thru medical school and residency training, then through yearly continuing medical education learning about the current level of ignorance in regards to nutrition. In all my many years as a Family Practice physician I have seen the nutritional guidelines change radically every 10 years or so, all due to governmental medical agencies, and it has all turned out to be, basically, well meaning baloney. So, the problem is not dishonest docs, but is crappy federal nutritional guidelines and a poor job of educating docs about real nutrition. Dr. Berry and many other docs are waking up to learning about the benefits of low carb diets for their patients, but this is due to educating themselves and discarding much of what they have been previously taught.

Thank you! Doctor Berry. I’m a 75 year old woman with a daughter who tells me all the time that I need to drink more water. I live with a 20 ounce container of water near my hand and know how much water I drink each day. My face and figure are smooth but the area most exposed to the sun, my arms and hands have a lot of wrinkles (so did my grandmothers). I’m on a keto diet and have lost nearly 40 pounds and don’t really need to lose any more. When my doctor told me I was pre-diabetic, I decided to change my life and my future. He now tells me I am no longer pre-diabetic and that I have improved my health greatly. Still, my daughter thinks I need 💩. I hope when I send her your assessment, she will be satisfied that I’m not dying of thirst.

Dorothy Sullivan I’m not sure what you are saying. If you drink more water of course you pee more. Water in water out. I guess I don’t have a sense of humor if that is what you were putting out there. We all know we need to exercise more. That’s a given. This life style has saved my life and works! Everyone is so quick to jump on whatever the government says is the best “diet”, But they spaz out on anything going against it. Do you not see they are supporting the big food companies and subsidized grain farmers. Don’t just watch one CZcams post. Study it before commenting. If I have misunderstood your comment I am sorry. But this Dr is one of the most well informed Docs I have researched and I have his back. I have read over 15 books in 3 months both pro keto and against keto.I have watched so many CZcams, and podcasts and googled countless trials. I have researched government and private trials and tests. The only facts I can accept is those of keto. It’s like buying a car...you don’t just go out and take the word of one dealership providing 1 make and model. You study and research which vehicle truly is the best out there. Then you make your choice. Always be open minded that what you have always believed may not be the right or best fit for everyone. Research research research! That’s all I can say! I went from a typical American doctor recommended diet to figuring out by accident from a book I picked up at a heath food store (Maria Emmerich) that I was doing it all wrong. I have lost 30 pound, blood pressure and cholesterol are perfect, and my blood test for a life insurance plan passed after being denied twice. After only 3 months eating keto. That says something. All I am saying is don’t be a nutrition snop. Don’t bash on anyone else for doing what they feel and or know is right for them. Dr. Berry has been helping his patients for a long time never seeing results until he started pushing the keto diet. Now his patience are thriving. How would you explain that? Just asking........Diana McKell

I'm new here and I love your videos in common sense and easy and clear explanations and approach about diets and foods that we should eat. A lot of what you said about eating and drinking habits I've been doing it all my life based on common sense, including how much water to drink, when my friends tell me that I should drink so many glasses of water, I tell them that I drink water when I'm thirsty. I'm in my late 60's and I don't have health problems, except I take a pill for my thyroid and I want to lose a about 7 lbs to fit on my size 8 cloth, I also been going intermittently to the gym for years, I haven't been able to lose them, so my new Dr., said to me to read and go on the intermittent diet, (which I already was doing it without knowing, I usually have dinner around 7pm, and I have a healthy small breakfast, eggs, fruit, pancakes, it varies, until around 10 or 11am, next day), but not to lose more lbs. I started watching your videos on how to keep doing the intermittent diet. Thank you for your fantastic information about foods and diets. Blessings

Yes, our typical American diet is making us fatter and sicker. I agree with Dr. Berry that simply drinking x amount of water isn't a magical weight reduction regimen. But increasing one's water intake DOES facilitate weight loss for the average American when that water replaces some of the sodas, copious amounts of sugar laden coffees, flavored drinks, and alcohol we consume each day.

Spot on doc ! There's a great amount of water one gets in through food , coffee, tea etc. There's indeed no need to drink any beyond that, except when you're thirsty. One piece of advice I did take note of recently, and found it to make a difference, was that it does benefit one to drink 2 glasses of pure water first thing in the morning - it rehydrates after sleep, and puts your body ahead for the rest of the day, upping your general energy level, without you needing to worry about specifically taking in any water aside from your normal food, coffee , tea etc, unless your body tells you to..

Thank you for your common sense approach. I was taught 25 years ago in physical therapy school, that the feeling of being thirsty can often decrease with age. Considering this "fact", and that an estimated 1/3 of elderly patients admitted to the hospital are dehydrated (yes there are good studies on this) I encourage all of my older patients not to rely solely on thirst to judge hydration levels. (On the other hand, this video was referring specifically to hydration's effect on weight loss). I guess what I'm saying is 8 glasses a day is dumb, but not drinking enough can be worse.

Hey fellow dietarian, i can tell you from experience of half a year of loosing weight (around 40lbs now) that you should just continue your efforts. There will always be plateau phases where your body stores more water, your digestion is not as fast as it should be or something like that. Sometimes it's just muscles that got build up (they weigh more for less volume). Or some slipup of sugar didn't let you burn as fast as usual through insulin. And yes, those phases can take a bit, even though a week might be a little bit on the longer side. So don't get yourself demotivated! don't get demotivated like me who just recognized i answered a 4 years old post lol but hey if you are still around, and you like too, share your current status, did you continue making progress?

Water helps in weight loss by keeping my stomach full for a longer period of time. So I can eat later and if I decide to eat then in smaller quantities. It may not have much to do with weight loss, but it has a heck of a lot to do (for me) to prevent kidney stones. I'd also like to add that I am a "repeat offender" of these damned painful things and every single one "broke loose" from the kidney wall when I was dehydrated (virtually always following participating in some sporting event).
I follow most of your advice on focusing on what I eat (low carbs), and I acknowledge you are talking about water vs. weight loss and not preventing stones, but every stone I managed to catch when passed was analyzed. And, by far, the last two that I passed after I first went high protein, low carb, about 16 years ago were the largest. My urologist said that the added protein in my diet increased the acidity in my urine... He did not tell me to cut back on protein. Not at all... but he did tell me that with this diet (again, not using that word to talk about weight loss, but rather food intake), I needed to drastically increase my water intake beyond the typical 8 cups a day, including what I was getting from certain foods. He recommended I drink as close to a gallon a day as I could stomach and gave me a peer reviewed paper about it.
I have days, even weeks, where I fall short of that intake, but I'd say 80% of the time I make it. 16 cups a day. And, knock wood, no additional stones. Damned genes.

Something I found that has helped me to lose weight on Keto is that I upped my water intake. Normally I might only have coffee in the morning and then something at night. At some point I started making sure I was drinking water during the day. I have a 30 oz tumble that I started drinking about two a day. Once I did that the weight started coming off. Occasionally I will drink more and it doesn't work. So I would say increasing your water intake, but not dramatically so, does help to lose weight, at least in my case.

According to the lay press, 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated. While this is not supported by medical literature, dehydration is common in elderly patients. It has been reported to occur in 17% to 28% of older adults in the United States.[1] Dehydration is a frequent cause of hospital admission. It can cause morbidity and mortality on its own and complicates many medical conditions. Dehydration may also be over-diagnosed. This can lead to misdiagnosis of the real cause of the patient's illness and lead to over-treatment with fluids. Dehydration is easily treatable and preventable. A thorough understanding of the causes and diagnosis of dehydration can improve patient care.

I think there is two real reasons to drink more water than you’d expect you need each day. 1. It helps to flush out your intestinal tract without adding extra stress on it. And 2. Most people that have issues losing weight have a hard time deciphering hunger signals from thirst, boredom, depression, etc, and end up eating more calories than they need to lose weight, or even maintain. There may not be a study but seeing as how processed carbs and multiple meals a day tricks our brain into thinking we need food at times we don’t, consuming water at these times could be a real benefit to many individuals. Not to mention you can live off only water but without it you die if there is no other nutrients consumed as well. Interesting video though, just have to remember how important personal experience is as compared to science backed studies that can be just as if not more flawed at times.
