Drink This Much Water for Good Health and Weight Loss (Surprise Ending)

- Drinking more water leads to weight loss, right? So many weight loss "experts say this that it seems self-evident. It must be true, right??
The problem is, when you really dig into the research, there are no meaningful studies showing that drinking more water leads to increased weight loss. Water is absolutely essential for human survival and health, but drinking more than your thirst calls for doesn't really seem to have any positive benefit on your health...
I'd much rather you drink ice water than a cola, but the practice of drinking more water hoping it will lead to weight-loss is a frustrating concept that doesn't help. The busy-work of calculating how much water you should drink based on how much you weigh is based on no science, and can distract you from what is really important, the foods that you eat, and the crap that you avoid.

My husband will be glad to hear because I'm always telling him he needs to drink more water đ
I happen to love water, so do not drink it for any other reason, than I like it. In fact sometimes I wonder if I drink to much. :-)
Due to this myth, I'm using an app (for weight loss) to keep track of the water I drink for preventing future kidney stones. I was a little surprised that water intake for this reason wasn't addressed in this video as an aside.
I'm really enjoying your channel!
KenDBerryMD
KenDBerryMD ~ first off, let me thank you for all of the great content and videos. Iâm in full~on binge-mode watching your library. You have great information and I appreciate how you explain all of the medical stuff so that everyone can understand ~ so, huge thanks! My question is can a person drink too much water? I drink, on average, 5 x 28oz jugs of water each day, probably even more than that. Can this harm me? I donât drink anything other than water, except for an occasion Starbucks. I have hypothyroidism so I donât waste calories by drinking them. I also check my blood sugars once a week to keep an eye on that ~ my sugars are great. Canât wait for your feedback, cheers fromđđšđŠđšđŠ
What did humanity do all these thousands of years without guidelines/charts/recommendations etc. on what and how much to eat and drink? How on earth did we ever make it this far? Use common sense and listen to your body! It knows best.
AMEN to that!! And thanks for the chuckle. I'm sure that you realize that common sense isn't as common as it used to be (I know...it's maddening sometimes). Blessings for your day!!
Yet, humanity is still here, thriving and doing better than ever (mostly anyway).
Elisabeth Ak we arent doing better than ever at least in the health department. Obviously all our scientific discoveries allow us to live longer and more comfortably but so many people are diabetic, get cancer etc
They didn't have long life-spans.
@@franktheweinerburke we didn't die in our 30s. That number comes from an average that includes infant deaths which were quite high back then.
My go to way of knowing I need water is I will have a wave of tired come over me, took me 57 years to figure out I just needed to drink a glass of water.
Yes, about mid afternoon after lunch, a sleepiness comes, I either have a kip or a mug of water. If I have water I generally find myself doing active stuff.
Finally! An honest doctor! Thank you, Lord and bless him for being truthful!
The majority of physicians practicing Western Medicine went into this grueling means of earning a living because, like Dr. Berry, they had a deep and burning desire to help people. It is not the docs who lack honesty, as they do their honest best for at least 70 hours per week year in and year out to help people get well and have better lives. No. Not the docs, but instead most of the pharmaceutical industry, the federal medical agencies, the state and National medical associations and so on. Most physicians go thru medical school and residency training, then through yearly continuing medical education learning about the current level of ignorance in regards to nutrition. In all my many years as a Family Practice physician I have seen the nutritional guidelines change radically every 10 years or so, all due to governmental medical agencies, and it has all turned out to be, basically, well meaning baloney. So, the problem is not dishonest docs, but is crappy federal nutritional guidelines and a poor job of educating docs about real nutrition. Dr. Berry and many other docs are waking up to learning about the benefits of low carb diets for their patients, but this is due to educating themselves and discarding much of what they have been previously taught.
THANK YOU SOO MUCH for debunking this and other myths. I always felt guilty about NOT being able to drink huge quantities of just plain water. I'm glad to know that all liquids count. Now I know I'm getting more than enough water. Luvvv your videos!
Water is better for your body than Soda
I drink coffee with saltt electrolytes and a Tblspn of keto chow mix in the morning. Every once in a blue moon I'll have a glass of unsweetened ice tea with lemon. Most of the time it's water, iced or warm, but still plain filtered water. I haven't had a sprite/soda in over 10 years.
I love your videos, I can't wait to get the next one. Thank you for explaining everything so well.
Thanks again for all you do! I share as much as I can to all my friends and others. Keep up the good work.
Yes, Dr. Berry, I am infuriated at others who have told me that I MUST drink, drink, drink. But if it ever happens again, I will most definitely ask for their sources from the intense research they must have done. Thank you for spending some time on this subject.
Thank you! Doctor Berry. Iâm a 75 year old woman with a daughter who tells me all the time that I need to drink more water. I live with a 20 ounce container of water near my hand and know how much water I drink each day. My face and figure are smooth but the area most exposed to the sun, my arms and hands have a lot of wrinkles (so did my grandmothers). Iâm on a keto diet and have lost nearly 40 pounds and donât really need to lose any more. When my doctor told me I was pre-diabetic, I decided to change my life and my future. He now tells me I am no longer pre-diabetic and that I have improved my health greatly. Still, my daughter thinks I need đŠ. I hope when I send her your assessment, she will be satisfied that Iâm not dying of thirst.
Another great video, Dr. BerryđđđŒ
Thanks for this! I have a really hard time with the 64oz a day rule as I'm on public transport almost daily and that really does not lend itself to fluid-loading! I want to be sure I'm hydrated because I tend to let myself get dehydrated (I know because as soon as I drink some water, my headache is gone) but it's super great to be freed from the idea of slurping down that much fluid every day!
The best way I have to know about my water intake is Thirst and then color of my urine,
when it gets darker I drink more.
Urine color is #1 for me
In sports, checking the urine color is also a quick dehydration indicator.
You are right⊠Watch your urine, donât go overboard, but for the sake of your vital organs drink more water. Youâll feel better! đž
Thanks Dr Berry. I like your no nonsense approach to all these issues. Keep posting. Cheers from England.

Dorothy Sullivan đdyingđ
Dorothy Sullivan Oh Dorothy! You so got that right!
Justin Bozeman Come on. She made a joke, man. :)
Dorothy Sullivan Iâm not sure what you are saying. If you drink more water of course you pee more. Water in water out. I guess I donât have a sense of humor if that is what you were putting out there. We all know we need to exercise more. Thatâs a given. This life style has saved my life and works! Everyone is so quick to jump on whatever the government says is the best âdietâ, But they spaz out on anything going against it. Do you not see they are supporting the big food companies and subsidized grain farmers. Donât just watch one CZcams post. Study it before commenting. If I have misunderstood your comment I am sorry. But this Dr is one of the most well informed Docs I have researched and I have his back. I have read over 15 books in 3 months both pro keto and against keto.I have watched so many CZcams, and podcasts and googled countless trials. I have researched government and private trials and tests. The only facts I can accept is those of keto. Itâs like buying a car...you donât just go out and take the word of one dealership providing 1 make and model. You study and research which vehicle truly is the best out there. Then you make your choice. Always be open minded that what you have always believed may not be the right or best fit for everyone. Research research research! Thatâs all I can say! I went from a typical American doctor recommended diet to figuring out by accident from a book I picked up at a heath food store (Maria Emmerich) that I was doing it all wrong. I have lost 30 pound, blood pressure and cholesterol are perfect, and my blood test for a life insurance plan passed after being denied twice. After only 3 months eating keto. That says something. All I am saying is donât be a nutrition snop. Donât bash on anyone else for doing what they feel and or know is right for them. Dr. Berry has been helping his patients for a long time never seeing results until he started pushing the keto diet. Now his patience are thriving. How would you explain that? Just asking........Diana McKell
Jesus Christ, all that over a damn joke. Calm TF down.
I'm new here and I love your videos in common sense and easy and clear explanations and approach about diets and foods that we should eat. A lot of what you said about eating and drinking habits I've been doing it all my life based on common sense, including how much water to drink, when my friends tell me that I should drink so many glasses of water, I tell them that I drink water when I'm thirsty. I'm in my late 60's and I don't have health problems, except I take a pill for my thyroid and I want to lose a about 7 lbs to fit on my size 8 cloth, I also been going intermittently to the gym for years, I haven't been able to lose them, so my new Dr., said to me to read and go on the intermittent diet, (which I already was doing it without knowing, I usually have dinner around 7pm, and I have a healthy small breakfast, eggs, fruit, pancakes, it varies, until around 10 or 11am, next day), but not to lose more lbs. I started watching your videos on how to keep doing the intermittent diet. Thank you for your fantastic information about foods and diets. Blessings

Love your videos. Can tell you are a health care professional by the number of times you say âokâ. Iâm a nurse and my former husband used to tell me this all the time. Apparently I used to or STILL say ok after each statement. Ok...? Lol. Thank you for taking time to help folks like me distinguish facts from fiction in our weight loss/wellness journeys.
Yeah. I noticed it yesterday. I think we do it to make sure the patients understand what we are telling them , because sometimes they have this look on there face of confusion! đ€
When I visited the United States a few years ago and made a 3-week trip through various states, I was shocked to see that so many people at the workplace had huge paper cups or plastic cups full of ice cubes and soft drinks. and everyone was fat. Next door, of course, a fast food restaurant. It was always a problem for us to find the right healthy food. I come from Germany
Yes, our typical American diet is making us fatter and sicker. I agree with Dr. Berry that simply drinking x amount of water isn't a magical weight reduction regimen. But increasing one's water intake DOES facilitate weight loss for the average American when that water replaces some of the sodas, copious amounts of sugar laden coffees, flavored drinks, and alcohol we consume each day.
Love the channel, Dr.Berry! I'm subscribing!
Really great info!!
Man I'm glad I've watched this vid. I started keto a month ago and doing well with weight loss so far and I have been drinking 2.5 litres a day⊠even though I usually stop drinking by 830 at night, I often have to get up in the middle of the night to pee twice or even three time which really messes up my sleep. So I think I'm going to ditch this and see if I can sleep better. Thanks!
Thank you, thank you, thank you!! My thoughts exactly - just drives me nuts with folks constantly having a water bottle in their hand. I drink when I am thirsty and now at age 70 hasn't hurt me at all.
Always a delight to see you, Doctor Berry!
Thank you so much for addressing my question!
Brilliant sir! The first f...ing video that has made sense of this subject of "how much water to drink".
It's great to hear it from another source. Heard it on Dr Berg. Seems he's gotten some flack from it. Traditional medical sources often get plain mad about the concept of less than 8 glasses a day. Drink a glass first thing after waking. One before a meal. And when you are (gasp) THIRSTY!
Thank God someone has address this subject. when ever I would trying to do this all I did was go to the bathroom a lot
Weâve been programmed with almost all that we claim to know! This applies to most of humanity. Iâm learning this more and more everyday. Ugh, de-program and listen to the body. Eat as healthy as possible and drinking water can be good for your skin anyway đ.
Thank you Dr. Barry! đđđâš
Love it ! Truth sets you Free ! Thank you !! â„ïž
Thanks for another great topic and video.
Could you discuss what happens if you drink too little, or too much, water and whats the side affects would be of each. Maybe even some signs of each.
You can literally cause your body to drown from drinking too much water. A buddy of mine did a water drinking contest, ended up having a seizure and water in his lungs because his body couldn't process it fast enough.
And not enough water is called dehydration. Lots of problems there too.
Love your information.... would love some information on hair loss while on keto/IF please!

Oh man, every time you say âhey dummyâ I laugh so hard. Idk why. Thanks for the interesting info! Keep up the videos!!
Spot on doc ! There's a great amount of water one gets in through food , coffee, tea etc. There's indeed no need to drink any beyond that, except when you're thirsty. One piece of advice I did take note of recently, and found it to make a difference, was that it does benefit one to drink 2 glasses of pure water first thing in the morning - it rehydrates after sleep, and puts your body ahead for the rest of the day, upping your general energy level, without you needing to worry about specifically taking in any water aside from your normal food, coffee , tea etc, unless your body tells you to..
Another great program my friend. Be well.
I agree with this in the context of weight loss. For bowel movements, I think that more water is better. Itâs much easier to pass stool when it is well lubricated.
Fat lubricates it
Agreed your right
yes more water , better movements
â@@judy3460 spot on with this. I use to get impacted on a low fat diet. If things slow down I up my fat intake. normally more butter.
@@pattyklein4394 not for me. I don't eat plant fibers so I don't have to hydrate the fiber and hope that it will slide on out without doing too much damage along the way. I drink water because my body tells me to. My poop is fine.

Me too...I try to drink at least 100 ounces per day!
I love this! I drink a LOT of water because its just what I prefer. I've been thinking for a long time that these people were crazy by saying if you drink more water you'll lose weight. If that was the case I would be skinny as a rail.
Me too, I crave ice water daily.....my skin, and overall well being , thanks me for it!đ. When I don't hydrate, I feel the difference.
I've been saying this for years!! Your body will tell you how much water you need! ty for the back up
Wow. Thank you for sharing this information.
Thank you doctor Berry for your job and tell us the truth.
I think some people have a hard time gauging if they're hungry or just thirsty. So drinking a cup of water could be a good way to see if you're actually hungry or just thirsty.
Thanks for the great tips please them coming.
Love this so much!
Thank you for always sharing the real truth!đ
Thank you for your common sense approach. I was taught 25 years ago in physical therapy school, that the feeling of being thirsty can often decrease with age. Considering this "fact", and that an estimated 1/3 of elderly patients admitted to the hospital are dehydrated (yes there are good studies on this) I encourage all of my older patients not to rely solely on thirst to judge hydration levels. (On the other hand, this video was referring specifically to hydration's effect on weight loss). I guess what I'm saying is 8 glasses a day is dumb, but not drinking enough can be worse.
8 glasses each day is not necessarily enough. Some of the amount needed is based on weight, another is based on thirst, and another is based on your health issues.
BS comments both of them. Elderly people have been poisoned with fake food, Fluoride and pharma. Not even CLOSE to a good example. Give em beef, animal fats, no Fluoride toothpaste, NO CARBS, then see how they are in a few years. Until then they're in sick bodies and not an example of how bodies work.

I'm recently starting my low carb/keto journey, learning a lot from you. I suffered a mild heart attack over a year ago, had triple bypass surgery. I'm doing very well, but wondering if you could speak about medications that might possibly hinder weight-loss efforts. So far I've lost ten pounds, but this past week - nothing. (I've got about 50 lbs. more to go!) Thank you so much for your videos.
Hey fellow dietarian, i can tell you from experience of half a year of loosing weight (around 40lbs now) that you should just continue your efforts. There will always be plateau phases where your body stores more water, your digestion is not as fast as it should be or something like that. Sometimes it's just muscles that got build up (they weigh more for less volume). Or some slipup of sugar didn't let you burn as fast as usual through insulin. And yes, those phases can take a bit, even though a week might be a little bit on the longer side. So don't get yourself demotivated! don't get demotivated like me who just recognized i answered a 4 years old post lol but hey if you are still around, and you like too, share your current status, did you continue making progress?
This is a breath of fresh air!! I've never been a water drinker but my urine is never dark... ever... so i must be getting enough water from somewhere!
KETO Liscious Life Drink enough healthy fluid (no sugar, no chemicals like sucralose, no synthetic dyes) they your urine is almost colorless. That's the goal--not a specific amount.
Thats great to know. Just bought a book on the keto diet and it said you should drink a Gallon of water a day. Was about to give up on starting the diet but thought I would just check if the book was right, found your video luckily so looking forward to doing keto now. Thankyou.

I'm glad that you posted this.
I just saw an app that said to drink 1 gallon of water a day for weight loss. I've never been able to even drink the 8 glasses of water. Imagine! If I drank that much water, there would be no room inside of me to eat food.
Good to know..... there's been so many different opinions on this subject and much confusion...... I really appreciate you educating me on health.... you're filling in a lot of blanks for me...... Much love...... ;-)
My hubby thanks you... lol..I was trying to do the "water thing" for a minute there. But proved it to myself actually. Went from drinking essentially no water a day to forcing down 2 liters... did that for months. No noticeable changes in anything whatsoever.
Justin Bozeman awww!!! You are SWEET!! I'm 40... in the icon pic even.. it's recent... it's funny I'm actually quite naturally greasy as all get out... so I think that helps too... but I think you're right I still try to do at least a liter a day for the skin thing. We shall see what I look like at 50!
Water helps in weight loss by keeping my stomach full for a longer period of time. So I can eat later and if I decide to eat then in smaller quantities. Water - at least so I think - also plays a role in removing toxins from the body. Personally - either it is a placebo or it is a reality - water helps me lose weight. I drink at least 3 kilograms of pure water a day.
Water is measured in litres not kilograms

This is shocking.. I though my excessive water intake over last 6 weeks played a huge part in my weight loss
Bro its does. May not be a study out on it. But u drink more water u eat less less calories. Gallon a day definitely aided in my weight loss. Hes a jackass

Thanks for the keto wake up call for my body!! You are GREAT!
Thank you Dr Berry. I think I have been drinking way to much at the advice of a keto/lchf coach. Started dialing it back the last few days. đđŒ
It may not have much to do with weight loss, but it has a heck of a lot to do (for me) to prevent kidney stones. I'd also like to add that I am a "repeat offender" of these damned painful things and every single one "broke loose" from the kidney wall when I was dehydrated (virtually always following participating in some sporting event).
I follow most of your advice on focusing on what I eat (low carbs), and I acknowledge you are talking about water vs. weight loss and not preventing stones, but every stone I managed to catch when passed was analyzed. And, by far, the last two that I passed after I first went high protein, low carb, about 16 years ago were the largest. My urologist said that the added protein in my diet increased the acidity in my urine... He did not tell me to cut back on protein. Not at all... but he did tell me that with this diet (again, not using that word to talk about weight loss, but rather food intake), I needed to drastically increase my water intake beyond the typical 8 cups a day, including what I was getting from certain foods. He recommended I drink as close to a gallon a day as I could stomach and gave me a peer reviewed paper about it.
I have days, even weeks, where I fall short of that intake, but I'd say 80% of the time I make it. 16 cups a day. And, knock wood, no additional stones. Damned genes.
Something I found that has helped me to lose weight on Keto is that I upped my water intake. Normally I might only have coffee in the morning and then something at night. At some point I started making sure I was drinking water during the day. I have a 30 oz tumble that I started drinking about two a day. Once I did that the weight started coming off. Occasionally I will drink more and it doesn't work. So I would say increasing your water intake, but not dramatically so, does help to lose weight, at least in my case.
It might help get rid of excess salt or dilute high sugars in your blood but if that were so, most likely you would be thirsty
It has helped me too. I've lost 78 lbs so far and the weeks I lose more are the weeks with higher water intake.
Another point is you're filling your stomach with something healthy rather than snacking on unhealthy foods. I find drinking lots of water helps me to eat less portion sizes too, all in all I agree with the doc water itself doesn't cause weight loss but it aids in weight loss
According to the lay press, 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated. While this is not supported by medical literature, dehydration is common in elderly patients. It has been reported to occur in 17% to 28% of older adults in the United States.[1] Dehydration is a frequent cause of hospital admission. It can cause morbidity and mortality on its own and complicates many medical conditions. Dehydration may also be over-diagnosed. This can lead to misdiagnosis of the real cause of the patient's illness and lead to over-treatment with fluids. Dehydration is easily treatable and preventable. A thorough understanding of the causes and diagnosis of dehydration can improve patient care.
Loved this!!
Our water is filled with garbage!could you do a video on distilled, spring and mineral waters please?and yes,its a total industry driven manufactured myth to push increased sales. The human body IS very smart,it will soon let you known when it needs fluid! Its called thirst and its difficult to ignore! Bravo doc.
Get a Berkey filtration system... I did.
I have a 12 cup Zero Water pitcher, and reportrs have said that its on of the purest water filtration systems available. It comes with a TDS meter (total dissolved solids) and it reads 000. When it gets up to 30 TDS, it's time to change the filter.
Totally love it.
Reverse osmosis water is the healthiest water.
I think there is two real reasons to drink more water than youâd expect you need each day. 1. It helps to flush out your intestinal tract without adding extra stress on it. And 2. Most people that have issues losing weight have a hard time deciphering hunger signals from thirst, boredom, depression, etc, and end up eating more calories than they need to lose weight, or even maintain. There may not be a study but seeing as how processed carbs and multiple meals a day tricks our brain into thinking we need food at times we donât, consuming water at these times could be a real benefit to many individuals. Not to mention you can live off only water but without it you die if there is no other nutrients consumed as well. Interesting video though, just have to remember how important personal experience is as compared to science backed studies that can be just as if not more flawed at times.
I once read about a man who did a 30 day water fast. He said that he lost about 50# and felt great, with lots of energy. I've gone whole days where I just couldn't make myself eat, but I drank water.
agree
That's so great to hear.
I don't care what medical research says, I've found that when I start drinking large amounts of water, I always lose weight. I've done it several times.
Well, I kind of disagree with you on this because I noticed a drastic difference in my weight loss depending on how much water I drink. If I donât drink much I donât lose fast at all and sometimes I wonât lose it all. If I drink up to a gallon a day I can lose Half a pound to a pound a day ,not every day but consistently at least a half pound most days ,But can go weeks without losing a bit if Iâm not drinking enough water,so with me water makes a huge difference. I donât know if everyone is that way but I notice it with me!
I was just about to say this. I've increase my water and fiber intake. Ive been dropping weight like you. I read that water especially cold water can help your metabolism and help calories burn.
You suppose to drink according to your physical activities day by day. So of course if your not active and sweating a lot, don't drink a lot
Agreed,! Drinking more water DRASTICALLY helps me lose weight!!!
I was told something similar (there's a but coming up here) but, the extra water was recommended for me not to lose weight but to avoid the side effects from increased uric acid levels. I always would start suffering from Gout when I started a diet and the increased water did seem to prevent this. Is this accurate or coincidence?
Do you know if he ever answers any of our questions back? Like you asked him a question and I wonder if he will get back to you? I know he has alot of people asking stuff but I never saw him answer back in the comments đ€
