    This is what matters in gaming, this is what is best in this community and why I love your shit so much Johnny; I don't give a shit about how many games you have or how cheap you got your last whole sale lot, I care about your history, your experiences, your anecdotes, you actually playing your games and bonding with them and over them. Love these collection videos, man!

    LandStalker is my all time favorite game. I had so many great memories playing it as a child with my father that I made it a yearly ritual to play it through once every year. It's not as hard as you say it is. Though the jumping & moving platforms however can get quite difficult. Really looking forward to your review.

    • @jessejay1104
      @jessejay1104 Před 7 lety +2

      LandStalker is one the best Genesis games on the console. Too bad it came out really late on the console so not as many people enjoyed it.

    • @Drewsefer89
      @Drewsefer89 Před 7 lety

      That ending always left me wanting more. You get the gist of it but it wasn't enough. All though back then many games didn't have a big ending and just ended quick just like that. They did make Lady Stalker which was never released outside of Japan cause I believed it wasn't as good but still decent. And their was Time Stalkers on the Sega Dreamcast which I recommend staying away from cause it's horrible.

    I loved Beyond Oasis. Of all the Genesis games with "next gen" graphics this one always did it for me. It looked so bright and colorful back when so many games had a grainy texture to everything. And then the Saturn sequel was good all over again.

  • @segagenesis1989
    @segagenesis1989 Před 7 lety +1

    Awesome collection Johnny! It's really good to see you collect games that hold some type of memory or are nostalgic. With respect to Sonic, I believe the reason why the character really resonated with you was because a marketing tool used to draw in the younger audience. As I noted before, we are the same age and the reason why we were early adopters of the SEGA Genesis was because it was marketed as the console to bring the arcade experience home. It was the reason why I begged my parents to get me the console in '89. In 1990/91, as soon as I saw the commercials featuring Sonic the Hedgehog I knew right away that SEGA was targeting the console to the younger crowd.

    Just a thought. At a glance, Magical Hats looks and plays like an older Master System game called Phycho Fox. Everything from the statues in the background, to the eggs, the punching animation, and the way the bridges fell.

    Landstalker is one of the best games of the 16 bit era. It's "Zelda" aesthetic for some odd reason makes some gaming historians not give it the props it deserved (also being "Zelda" on Genesis on top of that). It's fantastic once you get the controls down.

    I don't remember Phantasy Star 2 being at all confusing in terms of quests or anything, but the dungeons got really ridiculous. That was the main value of the hint book. Towards the end of the game I started writing on the maps in the hint book to show which teleporters were connected, so I could figure out where to go.
    I guess the game just expected you to draw maps, and there's nothing wrong with that, but it was too mazy for my taste at the time.
    The game's lowest point is in the early game when you go on a slog through 4 dams. Up until that time I had never been so "tested" to stay interested in a new RPG before. I had to get further in the game before it got more mentally engaging to me.
    In the late game, I think I had to gain about 10 levels before I could win the fight against "Dark Force" or whatever it's called. That's a fond memory though, not a complaint. I enjoyed the difficulty of that fight and the anticipation of eventually getting past it. Good late-game boss battles in RPGs should always be hard, otherwise it's a letdown.
    It's a cool game but it's also a test of your endurance. I'm glad I beat it as a kid because I don't think I'd be able to get through it again today.
    I beat Phantasy Star 3 once. I wanted to go back and try different paths (there's 4 different ways of going through the game), but I was starting to find it difficult to invest that much time into RPGs anymore.
    I never did beat Shining Darkness, for the same reason. It felt like a grind after a while and I just got burned out on it.
    I sort of wish I had bought and played Phantasy Star 4, but I never did. By that time I wasn't paying attention to console games anymore. I'm kind of glad I "missed" Sega switching to those cheap cardboard boxes though. That's just sad. The old plastic boxes were really nice, and that's how I prefer to remember the system.

    both earthworm Jim games are my favorite for two games for the Genesis. it may be nostalgia, but I remember the hype for the game, the magazines raved about em. I spent forever saving for ewj and finally got enough to buy it. it was every but of the awesome I was hoping for, funny cartoon graphics, hilarious characters, solid gameplay that changed it up often. just a classic I still enjoy playing through today.

      Great post except that I disagree about that part:
      "Pretty much covered all the great ones"
      He has a good Genesis collection, especially among the early titles (1988 to 1991) but he has only around 10% of the overall goodness on the system, there are so many awesome Genesis games... On top of my head I can mention Panorama Cotton, Columns III, Devil Crash MD, Gunstar Heroes, Alien Soldier, Thunder Force III and IV, Comix Zone and, well, many others!
      +Retro Soul
      Oh Shining Force is well regarded but Beyond Oasis indeed deserves more recognition.

    • @retrosoul8770
      @retrosoul8770 Před 7 lety

      Eh, as far as I'm concerned, no Genesis game other than Sonic, uncensored Mortal Kombat, Aladdin, and maybe Phantasy Star IV seem "well regarded" and maybe Streets of Rage as well.
      At least among the bias Snes obsessed internet mainstream. Many Genesis enthusiasts understand it's great library though.
      So yeah, I'm not necessarily disagreeing with you.

    • @yohkom.7988
      @yohkom.7988 Před 7 lety

      I see what you mean but I think that you're exagerating a bit. Also this is what makes the Mega Drive so cool, it might have been very successful but it's still not your mainstream system, it's edgier, with a more diverse library helped by the fact that it had games development support from every regions Japan, US and Europe.

    Hey Johnny! thanks for always recomend the Ys series. I just started playing Books I & II and man, IT IS AWESOME! just as you said. I'll like to repay you somehow, and that's why i'm gonna recommend you Gunstar Heroes for the Sega Genesis. Put that in your list of "games i have to play before i die" please!

    Shadow Dancer is my fave Shinobi game on the Genesis (who would have thought XD ) and it's IMO the superior game of the three! It's arcadey and a bit stealthey and memorization based - great stuff.
