  • Part of Mumbai’s ambitious Coastal Road is open to the public. But how has it changed things and how much time does it actually save you? Gavin D’souza and Nikhil Bhatia are out to investigate.

    I think Gavin was lucky enough not to encounter any traffic on Peddar Road area when the video was shot. Else that stretch is still a nightmare to drive on. Also the 2 cars weren't comparable. A Tuscon would have probably been much more powerful to drive as compared to the Comet. While a 6 minutes time gap is great between the two drives, Bombay still has a long way to go as far as the traffic nightmares are concerned. Just to let Autocar know that yesterday ie Friday 3rd May afternoon I took 1.5 hours to commute from Goregaon to BKC for work on the Western Express Highway. A long way to go, but Bombay is probably getting there in terms of road infra with all new roads etc. Thanks Nikhil, Gavin, Jay (for the commentary) and Autocar for the video.

      Will you switch to the metro once 3 phase 1 opens by the end of the month? You'd use metro line 7 (red), switch to metro line 1 (blue), and finally get onto metro line 3 (aqua) from marol naka and then directly to BKC.

    No extra amount of roads will ever lower the transit time. This is the biggest fallacy that everyone fails to understand in the long run. More roads = less traffic --> more people buy car = more traffic. It is a vicious cycle. There is only ONE way to reduce transit times and cut traffic which is (drumrolls) --> investment in good public transport infrastructure. (Period)

    • @meetankush
      @meetankush Před 22 dny +43

      Mumbai has one of the best public transport system in the world. Guess what, even that is packed. The “fallacy” is not applicable in the population density of cities like Delhi and Mumbai. How long before we have more lines to accommodate more of the public transport system? Because there’s a local every 2 minutes of each other. The only way is to have more platforms and more tracks, which is, repeat after me, EXACTLY THE SAME AS INCREASING NUMBER OF ROAD LANES.

      Agreed. BTW which car do you own now? 😊 People's enthusiasm for a car will never vanish. People who are very conscious about utopian concepts can very well opt for public transport. Human aspirations can't be suppressed.

    The coastal road was meant for just this, it was supposed to help the route to be decongested, and provide a better commute to both the users and non users, so the idea which seemed kind of crazy, and many assumed it would fail to decongest the old route because they thought the implementation would be bad, but for now at leat the implementation seems somewhat successful, more than trans harbour link, though trans harbour link will be the main route in future after it is extended to Pune mumbai expressway and the new navi Mumbai international airport opens up....

    I think a lot of people fail to understand the ultimate benefit, the aim isn't just to make a ultra fast highway but to also make more routes and reduce traffic in the city. Peddar Road, a traffic hub has seen lesser traffic because of this and hence it will not just benefit the ones taking the coastal road but also the traditional route.

    As the Coastal road is still a work in progress and many parts are still to be completed, this is not really a fair comparison. Having said that, it is probably because the Coastal road and the old road are both now available, that the traffic seems to be split evenly, which is why the commute took almost the same time. The good news is, that the earlier grid-locked traffic jams are history.

    Chances are many office goers took 2nd May off in addition to 1st May (Wednesday). Also 922 am from Bandra is not peak time; most folks have to reach offices in Worli and South Mumbai by 930, so peak hour on that route is really 8am to 930. I live along an arterial road going from Mahim to Worli so I see the south bound traffic already built up by 9am. Most banks and corporate offices are now located in the Parel to Tardeo stretch. The coastal road from Worli to Nariman Point is likely to become a white elephant in a few years, especially after the underground metro is fully functional. This is another example of the nexus between big construction companies and govt that enriches their promoters politicians, and bureaucrats without really benefitting the residents.
