I think that being a "racist" is probably the least morally objectionable thing about a Mafiosi who is a stone-cold killer, a thief and a huckster. As far as his sins goes, this wouldn't rank exactly at the top.
Real enough to make him a bad guy that can’t be glorified. His racism says more about him personally like if he abused animals or his wife. Not as serious as murder but that stuff can’t be justified.
I’ll always love and respect _The Sopranos_ greatly for having the guts to unflinchingly tackle controversial topics - and doing so in a highly entertaining yet brutally honest fashion. That's a large part of why it's my favourite TV show. There was no sugar-coating or pandering; it wasn’t afraid to offend anyone if doing so was in service of the story it wanted to tell. That quality is becoming rarer and rarer every day. In that sense, I understand perfectly well why fans laud the series for depicting scenarios like this in the way that it does. On the other hand, I can’t help but feel that many viewers seem to enjoy it for all the wrong reasons. They fail to understand that the show is a scathing indictment of the mafia lifestyle, their flimsy ultra-conservative values, and their utter hypocrisy. We are not meant to support the bigotry of Tony and his goons. If they truly understood how miserable and ignorant these characters are, they would realize that the joke is on them. Seriously, just look at how everyone on this series ends up. Almost everyone on this show - including those not in the mafia - is a complete hypocrite in one form or another, in that they rationalize their compliance with evil and only espouse their values to the extent that it does not interfere with their own personal benefit. All this without even one mention of their innumerable crimes. The truth is that the viewer is tricked into rooting for and sympathizing with these horrid, monstrous people because we just so happen to be exposed to their villainy from within the inside of their circle. We too learn to rationalize their actions because we do not want to admit that their wickedness resonates with us. In that way, the series serves as a test - a mirror that reflects your own sense of morality and forces you to ask yourself some tough questions. That’s what makes _The Sopranos_ exceptional.
Good analysis. Yes indeed nearly everyone who watches the show has a soft spot for these characters, who could realistically murder them for stepping on their shoes out on the street and not think twice. Many people call the ending tragic; dark; but at the end of the day we watched a crime family of sociopaths responsible for dozens of abhorrent crimes on and off screen crumble. Is that not good?

It's universal. In South Africa, immigrants from other African countries are being attacked by working-class black South Africans who accuse them of causing crime and taking jobs.
Tony is a violent thug, as most of them are, but he doesn't mess with ordinary people - at least intentionally. Not saying tony is a good person or that he shouldn't be in prison but there's a distinction to be made here.
I feel like Tony would've been somehow more pissed if the thief had been Italian.
"He's giving our people a bad name . . . now if you'll excuse me, I have to go murder my best friend"
The smirk sums up Tony perfectly. He loved being right about things and never cared about other people's opinions.

That ol' tired "poverty causes violence" argument is so lame. After the great depression - where suddenly millions of white Americans were in the poor house - there followed a DECREASE in crime.
Crime is heavily correlated with poverty, studies upon studies prove this.

According to the libs it would.
@@VCthaGOATdunker The libs are fakes.

That’s what makes _The Sopranos_ exceptional.
rage paragraph
Good analysis. Yes indeed nearly everyone who watches the show has a soft spot for these characters, who could realistically murder them for stepping on their shoes out on the street and not think twice.
Many people call the ending tragic; dark; but at the end of the day we watched a crime family of sociopaths responsible for dozens of abhorrent crimes on and off screen crumble. Is that not good?
Excellent comment. Reflects exactly what I think if The Sopranos, and basicalky every show/movie where the bad guys are the protagonists

The thing about this show is that even though the characters are racist, it's far from the worst trait about them.
