    My pick for best claustrophobic thriller is easy: The Descent. That movie scared the crap out of me before the “scary” stuff started happening. I actually started to feel more comfortable once it turned into a horror.

    The novel 'Lucifer's Hammer' -- written by Larry Niven & Jerry Pournelle in 1977, while the cold war was still very hot & 20 years before the ISS even existed in the real world -- had a sub-plot identical to 'ISS', but shit kicks off after civilization is devastated by a massive comet impact. I don't recall what it was named in the novel, but it was a joint space station with both American astronauts & Soviet cosmonauts on board, with communication breakdowns, secret orders, murder & mayhem, etc.

      @fuzzuck Před 5 měsíci +1

      @@F0xH0und7 I read it over a decade ago, but it held up then as an expansive, nightmarish vision of a pre-digital age cosmic apocalypse, and I think it still does hold up; an alternate (end of) history, for a time when it truly felt like the nuclear sword of Damocles was hanging over humanity's head, infusing everything with a nihilistic subtext. The scope is (obviously) massive, & the tidal wave passages definitely stand out, but the savagery, greed, & vicious tribalism that immediately sweeps over the surviving population like a contagion is also memorable, feeling brutally realistic.

    The Cave with Lena Headey and Cole Hauser is pretty claustrophobic. It is about a cave diving team that comes across something they didn't expect. I don't want to give away too much.

    Favorite claustrophobic movie? Favorite is hard but maybe the most interesting use of confined space: Fall (2022). It's a pretty good movie and its was kind of interesting that the characters were confined so tightly to such a small space yet they were literally in the open, able to see for miles in every direction.

    Saw it tonight, and really enjoyed it. The first half is a bit more suspenseful, but I think that’s because it’s establishing the characters and setting the scene for how each person will play their part, and it still surprises you.

      Argh… someday we will learn to live in peace. As a Russian-Ukrainian I can say, on average ordinary people in russia don’t have hate for Americans. But the government does everything to instigate the hate and tension. A lot of older generation fall for this propaganda. It’s a shame we are being ruled by stupid old people and an old insane authocrat.

    A claustrophobic sci-fi/horror movie you might not know about is "Crawl or Die" from 2014. A squad of marines on another planet are forced underground by alien monsters. They need to get the last human capable of procreation to an escape ship, but to do that, they have to crawl through a seemingly endless tunnel system, all while being pursued by the monsters. Very thrilling!

    Dead Calm (1989): Sam Neill, Nicole Kidman (her breakthrough role), and Billy Zane. Two yachts, one is sinking, and only one survivor from it climbs aboard the other. Great moments of tension on each boat in the middle of the ocean.

    I want to recommend a movie I translated for work (I make subtitles for a living) called "Capsule", where Britain is secretly the first nation to put a man in space and other forces work against them. We spend almost an entire movie in the capsule with the astronaut, it's very claustrophobic and intense.

    Sounds about right for January film. Seems to have the same fundamental flaw as Sunshine. Conceptually interesting movie but devolves into a horror slasher film and unfulfilling ending. Oh wait that was Life as well. Best claustrophobic survival thrillers? The original Poseidon Adventure (never saw the remake) Sphere, and Das Boot though I should really see Crimson Tide some time.
