- The Lisbon Earthquake (1 November 1755) reached a magnitude of 8.5 to 9 (estimated) on the Ritcher scale. It was followed by a tsunami and several fires that destroyed around 85% of the city buildings.
It was one of the deadliest earthquakes in history.

So, many of you have commented about the earthquake. "Was it real?", "Did it really happened?"
The question is yes, and for those who want to know about it, I will now explain what happened.
So, first of all, it's kind off an irony, because it all happened during the "All saints day", an extremely religious holiday that we still celebrate. As you know, Europe was suffering a religious fanatism (if you read the book "Baltasar and Blimunda" you will understand it), which means that, this holiday, was one of the most important holidays of Portugal.
And it all happened that day.
It's november the 1st 1755, people woke up early to go to church and pray. It was a normal holiday, just like the others, until 09:30, when a 8.5 -- 9.5 earthquake, hit west Europe, starting near Lisbon (Gorringe Bank) and being felt everywhere.
People are scare, they've never seen anything like this, they are terrified, there's nowhere to go, the streets of Lisbon were a mess, random, with no pattern. Lots of people died, lots of them ran away the the oppenest area of Lisbon, near the port.
They thought they were safe there, there's nothing to fall, nothing can hit them. And, them, the Tsunami came.
It was a 10 meters wave, that penetrated 250 meters inside Lisbon, killing everyone in the ports.
Everything that wasn't hit by this tsunami, was destroid by the huge fire caused by the earthquake. All survivors escaped Lisbon, so the fired lasted 5 days.
Between 10000 and 90000 people died in Portugal because of all this.
Then, a very powerfull man, Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, or the Marquis of Pombal, decided to reconstruct the city, creating the "Pombalin Cage" ---> the first anti-earthquake infrastructure in the world. He created a city of parallel and perpendicular street, 3 - 4 floor buildings, large streets...
The city you can see whenerver you come here was made by him.
There are still ruins of the earthquake, like the church you say in this video (The Carmo Church), that is now a museum, but lots of things burned, like Carlos Seixas's classical pieces, lots of important and religious documents, entire libraries and others...
And this is the truth about our November the 1st 1755: Earthquake, Tsunami, Fire, Deaths, Destruction, The Marquis of Pombal, New Lisbon...
This earthquake was the result of the movement of two gigantic Tectonic Plates, near Lisbon.

Thank you for reading this testimony.
Great job, man. I get scared when I read about earthquakes because I lived the big one in México back in 2017 and I notice that people don't talk too much about the aftermaths.
Honestly i'm so scare while playing this. I never know about 1755 lisbon earthquake before but I know this game based on real events and I search for it. And it very horrible.
Magnitude was probably 8.5
Also big waves. This thing about being in a boat watching a city burning was bull shit
Filipe Domingues For help you can also look up a show called Perfect Storms: Disasters That Changed The World. Look up an episode called God’s Wrath. It is about the November 1st, 1755 Lisbon Earthquake, Tsunami, Firestorm, Anarchy, and reconstruction of the city.
Portuguese gamer living in Lisbon starting this mission and immediately seeing the intro title: *sweats nervously*
Yes, that describes me perfectly
When I saw "November 1755" I thought "wow, how cool it will be to see the city recovering from the earthquake." Then I realized everything was still fine...
*Nervous tuga noises*
Opposite situation here. As an American I had never even heard of the Lisbon Earthquake so first thought when Shay headed there I was like "Huh... random place to go off to, but okay..."
5 minutes later and I was given a rather suprising and memorable history lesson
And if you had paid attention to what he says in the beginning (all saints) then you know why the first of November holiday is called "Dia de todos os santos" day of all the saints, in honor of those who have died that day
Finally Portugal appeared in a video game with some relevance as well.
Pimpa Gamer Sim, mas ainda é uma parte pequena :)
Moss Mas aparecemos, algo que é bastante raro :)
Pimpa Gamer Sim, já é qualquer coisa :)
Pimpa Gamer ya the first time portugal is in a game and its burnd down to the ground
+Pimpa Gamer medieval total war tem Portugal...não podes esquecer que o país está em crise desde 2001....são muitos anos, ninguém se quer associar a algo permanentemente em crise.
This sequence... I can't imagine what Shay was feeling. Hearing all those screams, and having to ignore all of them for the safety of himself. Him, an Assassin, whose responsibility was to protect... Heavy stuff, man
I stopped to help someone trapped under rubble in the church, never imagining the whole city was crumbling. I thought, just past the church walls he should be safe if I can carry or drag him there. But there was too much rubble to get to him and I had to leave him. And THEN there were all the dying people in the street. No wonder Shay became a Templar.
I got goosebumps when i played this sequence
@Dragon Dimosthenis But you must know that the Templars want us all to not have free will or any type of liberty... You know that, right?
And also, with power comes *corruption and tyranny* , no wonder why the Assassins gain the simpaty of the lower-classes after they arrive.
@Dragon Dimosthenis thats the beauty of Assassin's creed franchise
And then months of depression, anger and loneliness traveling to america just to get kicked out through the door by his best friend, Hope and his mentor. His best friend tried to kill him with rocks and pointed a gun at him when there was nowhere to go.Even when he tried to kill himself they shot him.

😂😂😂
I LOVE when the Assassins creed games integrate real life historical events into the story
This earthquake was so powerful, modern researchers rated it an 8.5 to 9 in the Richter Scale, making among the most powerful earthquakes in human history. Itnearly leveled the city of Lisbon. It was felt across the Mediterranean, and even as far afield as the British Isles.
So shay outspeed this.
No, he didn't. We clearly see buildings collapse in FRONT of him. You don't outrun an earthquake. He just navigated the chaos.
The church represented in game is the Carmo church. It's ruins are still visible today and host an archeological museum.
Serio?

Is that latin spoken? Doesn't sound like portuguese
Going on the ship wouldn't have saved them. After 30 minutes a giant tsunami hit the city.
Unless his ship can fly through the air i don't see how
Jack the Gestapo shay makes his own luck
Hunter BIrd I don't think sailing for 30 minutes is gonna get them away from the tsunami unless they are sailing along the coast away from the city and not straight into the ocean.
Hunter BIrd If they were out at sea then they wouldn't have escaped the tsunami. A tsunami starts hundreds of miles away from the coast.
Hunter BIrd sure!
My Mother was portuguese and she used to sit on the living room watching me play games w/ some story mode as I've translated some important sentences os the speech. She was surprised when this part initiated, and happy about it, and she started to cry as the panicked people, on the streets, spoke in european portuguese. A scene that I'll never forget, and old lady that loved her home country xD
best mission in the game
one of the best missions in the series IMO
The moment they mentioned Lisbon, my heart started racing, but I wasn't sure. The moment when he reached Lisbon and showed the year 1755, my heart stopped.
I immediately thought to myself, "No way, isn't this the same year of the... Don't tell me that the piece of Eden is gonna... SHAY DON'T TOUCH IT!!"
In came the earthquake, and my heart sunk making me realize that both Assassins and Templars had negative traits about them.
dawg chill issa videogame, did your heart start flying too?💀
@@mariocordova7585 it was a shocking moment in a video game. Don't tell me you haven't had a moment like that in another.
"I knew we shouldn't have just let that guy climb around the church and go into the secret basement!"
As a history buff, when the opening scene came up when I was first playing this game and I saw "Lisbon, Portugal. November 1755", I immediately went "oh...oh no...."
I got shivers while I played this. One of the all time best Assassin's Creed moments ever, this was just so masterfully done. Hats off to the developers of this whole sequence.
The Carmo Church interior was packed to the gills with people, not just a handful like in this game. At least 400 people were squashed to death by the collapsing roof of the main nave, while several more were burned alive in the ensuing firestorm.
Well this game wae made on older hardware so it would of been impossible to have that large number of npcs on screen.
@@micpere1991 I see, it makes a lot of sense; thank you for the explanation!
Also, creative liberties
I love that the background voices are Portuguese
To me this will go down as one of the scariest moments in Assassin's Creed history.
One of the most horrific moments in AC series
If you ever go to Lisbon, go and visit the Carmo convent ruins tour. It’s poignant when you think it looks exactly the same after the 1755 earthquake hit
I've only experienced small magnitude earthquakes so far, and playing this mission gave me an entirely new experience.
9:42 it’s the Undertaker
I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed. Undertaker isn't stressed at all.
whaaat?? this quake was actually featured in a video game :o
+Eemil S. Just a fantasized version of it :)
During the actual earthquake there was also a massive tsunami so they probably would not be safe on a ship either.
One of the best AC smaller levels they've designed.
I am going Lisbon in December so will attempt this entire sequence myself....
lol
Imagine the situation.
You just played in your friends house a part of the ac3 with haytam but only from the part in the boat to save Benjamin Franklin. Then you decide to tell your parents to get this game (ac rogue) on Christmas as a present. Then you open it, it's your first interaction with the franchise and you think it is just about an order of assassins who makes justice by killing bad guys, it tells you everything about the Creed, how the order works, a simple tutorial beginning, then you get to this part of the game in Lisboa, after seeing that thing in the center and being like punched in the face by this plot twist that you couldn't even imagine, you got this, everything crumbles and the city gets destroyed, you are now confused on what the hell is going on. After, Shay betrays Achilles for a greater good, but that's not the real plot twist from me, then the game decides to break the story and you are now on an office and a woman is screaming at you saying "this is an animus, A-NI-MUS, it sounds you off something?!", you can't imagine how shocked you are and you say "what the hell is going on with this game..." , you played the game but since you are a noob on rpg type of gameplay you got stuck on the final boat battle. Then you decide to play all the previous games and you enjoyed them all, you pass Rogue again, then unity and syndicate, you are a little bit disappointed on Unity's ending but still you were kind of greatful but worried on where is the actual present storyline, waiting 2 years for Origins.
Then the inevitable happens, you then realize that Juno, the main antagonist of the entire franchise, is dead, that Desmond had a son, and that all the lore that you wanted to know was all in Comics and novels that you didn't even know about it's existence, and then Odyssey happens. You stopped buying everything Ubisoft will make except for some remasters.
My name is [REDACTED], and this is my story.
Okay
Mine’s not that far off, but I started with Origins, then went all the way back to the first game
you guys got portuguese voice actors (i was able to recognize some of the voices if not their names) that leaves me so happy...
Damn the first time I played this mission, I was scared as hell and just running for my life and shocking I made it with no mistakes.....
Easily my favorite free running moment in Assassin's Creed, i don't know how i pulled it off first try without failing, but damn this was fun. Also probably my favorite non Ezio Assassin's Creed
6:48 when hope is home alone
Real event, biggest earthquake to hit the whole of Europe for at least 10,000 years. Maybe longer. Felt as far away as Finland, irony is that tsunamis were recorded in Portugal's rich colony of Brazil.
I'm just here cause I'm from Lisbon and I don't own the game xD
Crazy to find out this was a true event. Insane.
There are 55 dislikes.
The year 1755 ends with 55.
Illuminati confirmed! :P
Ah, dislikes. How I mourn thee
No one:
Chile in the 1985 earthquake
More like Mexico City:
- Inês... Inês, onde estás?
I am from Portugal so I can confirm that yes Lisbon was "Destroyed" by an Earthquake which changed the country forever
don't forget the tsunami 😂
I remember assuming Ubisoft had just made this part up because I didn’t think something so horrific could happen. If only…
dude its called Richter skala :D
nice vid btw as always
"God had nothing to do with It"
This was Shay's turning point
Oh for sure
Interestingly enough, this scene is quite accurate to the eye witness accounts that still survive to this day. If anyone is interested you should listen to "Voices of the Past" which reads the letters left behind from this event from survivors.
Didn't know AC Rogue was that epic
Did the assasins know this would happen? Or was it a mistake? Or did they make it on purpuse using the player as a sacrificial soldier who managed to survive somehow? i didn`t play this game.
"God had nothing to do with this", true but sadly, most people thought otherwise. And it's something that a few anti-theists (extra-douchey ones) like to joke about.
I'm sure even 2016 people already know the cause of earthquakes.
God had nothing to do with it, and neither did Sauron, Voldemort, or Cthulhu.
Well, if god indeed exists then he created a universe knowing this could happen.
@@unknownuser4816 However you slice it, god is a bit of a c*nt. Or at the very least as "neutral" as nature itself.
so weird that they can still run while the ground is shaking in magnitude 7
Honestly, gotta side with Shay in all this. He had no idea what he was in for and I BET if he and Ezio met in person, being from different sides, somehow I feel like there would be no problems at all in the world.
My thoughts after this part. "Damn, if this is what makes him join the Templars, I can't say I blame him."
Now if i am thinking about, it would be great see assassin set in san francisco before and during earthquake in 1906.
"Which city would you doom next?! New York? Chicago? SEATTLE?!"
And the earthquake actually happened ,but in the game is terribily inacurrate.
yeah after this scene i finally understood the hype about this game. Wow still gives chills after many years from release, i would put it on top of Monteriggioni attack in brotherhood even. Epic af.
"Feast of all saints, what a sight"
... hoo boy...
not for long buddy
nice video ;)
All merit goes to Ubisoft, I just played :)
And I am wondering, how he managed to get away by ship, since there was a major tsunami coming his direction... Would send him and his ship straight back to Lisboa.
Daniël De When out at sea, tsunamis are barely taller than the other waves. They don’t become giant until the deep water of the ocean becomes the shallow water of the coast and thus all that energy stacks up on itself. The Morrigan would be more than capable of getting far enough out to sea before the tsunami hit.
@@pretzelbomb6105 plus it wasn’t the Morrigan shay’s ship looked more like a Manowar here
I just don't get how no one in the church said a word about the man desecrating the walls of the church or the hole that opened up in the floor afterwards. Wtf?!!
Just going to point out the historical error of using the republican colours in the small flags instead of the monarchical ones. Republican is green and red. Monarchist is white and blue.
Well done
No one likes my country (🇵🇹)
But when i see this i get shocked
Lmao I live in Lisbon at the moment. I travelled the world for 5 years. Now I choose Portugal as my 3rd home. This country always amazes me.
best scene in game
It's only missing the tsunami.
Up to 90,000 people in the city out of 200,000 died was this disaster. Almost half of the population....
Erm, why was William Byrd playing in the background?
Who would’ve thought
they should had included the tsunami
I live in lisbon. Eu vivo em Lisboa
Memory 4 title is "Kyrie Eleison" meaning "Lord have mercy"

Obrigado Chico da tina
not a single curse word while the city is going into shit.
What about the Tsunami that hit Lisbon after the quake? I heard people who fled the quake went towards the coastline and were tragically hit by the Tsunami. I am sure Shay won't be safe sailing after the quake.
As a portuguese all the boats got destroyed No way to escape either you die or survive by luck
@@drippymonke166 "I make my own luck" ~ Shay Patrick Cormac ; )
Lore accurate
What guys are doing there on November 1, 1755???
I find it odd seeing this... and...he just escaped on a goddamn boat.. and...i wonder where are the damned waves? the colossal tsunami?! What all the boats were affected but one right next to the shore? Nice to see the beautiful area of Alfama on a game tho.
The safest place to be in a tsunami is inside a boat in the open ocean since tsunami waves only become dangerous when they hit the shore
Bury the dead and heal the injured.
E n sabia que tu o owner do canal Tmb és português....ou n?

as a portuguese gamer, i have to say just one thing..

1755 be like
Portugal underrated. 💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔
This earthquake is even worst than Japan?
This earthquake happened in 1755. Comparing destruction and number of deaths won't be "fair".
Please don't get me wrong, what I mean is that quality of construction wasn't the same as in present time, living habits weren't the same, for instance candles were used at the time instead of electricity and that contributed a lot to the fires but, on the other hand, Lisbon was smaller than present day cities. All those things influence the consequences of the events.
The earthquake was around the same intensity, but it was worst in Portugal cause back then architecture wasn't ready for earthquakes, and as the Moss said, it was a religous holiday so thousands of candles around Lisbon lit fire, and then a tsunami came, but the city wasn't big and it was pretty much entirely located by the river, and the buildings weren't high as well.
So, even before the Tsunami, Lisbon was already destroyed with the earthquakes and fires (as fairly portrayed in the game), and what the people did to feel save was to stay on the open squares, away from buildings and fires, but then the tsunami came and they weren't educated about tsunamis at that time so yeah... It was pretty destructive.
In Lisbon. The earthquake was betwen 8 and 9 in Richter's scale.
LIBSON !?!?!? bruh
What?
What happened in haiti HAPPENED IN PORTUGAL!
1755
So it was an irishman that f'ed us over uh?
6:36 우당탕
How did they escape the tsunami tho?
Shay probably escaped the city fast enough in about 10 minutes or so before the tsunami could hit the coast and he sailed out to the open sea away from Lisbon and tsunamis don’t have much impact in the open seas.
or maybe its set in alternate history during Assassin Templar conflict when only earthquake happened and no tsunami happened.
in which sequence ?
Maybe the worst parkour ive seen done in an ac video
PORTUGAL CARALHOOOOOO
Irish accents
really Ubisoft !!!! a whole freaking city and map design for this !!! wtf
all that just to destroy it all !!?? i'm asking : whats the point again !!!???
because it's accurate, it really happened
Because this real life event was used as a plot device to turn our character into a templar.
Gaaaa
that's cheap. Achilles and the assassins are suddenly badguys. They aren't shocked or they don't even try to justify what happened. Is the rest of rogue like this? i hope not :s
bitjezeverpeisek, This game shows that Assassins are not always good and Templars are not always bad. Actually this is shown from the very first game. Well, except for Borjias. Templars themselves call the era of Borjia's rule in Italy dark for the Order.
So was the ingame Haiti earthquake real aswell?
And...They forgot the tsunami...
Really??...there is a big wave coming there and they are like "ohh we sailed far enough" and did not even mentioned that? Guess you just said that without even thinking...
Well what causes the earthquake was the artifact, then the earthquake epicentre wasn´t in the sea, so there´s no tsunami...makes sense
the tsunami hit 40 mins later, they would be out at sea by then - tsunamis are harmless in the open sea
Doctor Doom doctor of dicks
Its only based on real events... they are not going to be 100% accurate
