yeah. enemies don't just die from a stealth skill anymore, there's no counter one-hit kills with fluid combat movements and the game becomes more and more depended on good lootboxes that has "legendary equipment" instead of having to gather collectibles and craft for endgame stuff. People also have levels now that makes them able to tank hits that's supposed to kill them in real life, which takes away that bit of realism that the old games has. Even parkour movements on maps is becoming less prevalent. Assassin's Creed is becoming more like a generic grindy triple A combat games rather than the stealth-themed action-packed series it was before.
And it seems like Ubisoft has this little knack of going back in time lately eventhough Assassins doesn't mostly exist yet back then. If it's a one time thing that contributes to the story like Origins then sure, but going as far back as the Spartan era or Vikings is way too farfetched for a game that's supposed to be about Assassins imo

Watch Dogs doesn't count eventhough it's technically set in the same universe.

True Desmond was like a true Major Protagonist. Now its just some random guy working for Abstergo. Its like they couldn't even have some other Assassin taking Desmond place as the new Protagonist 😒

When I played this game for the first time, the mortality of it all never really hit me. Looking back, Desmond and the Assassins really were just slaughtering random people lol like "Assassins don't kill innocents" but somehow 9-5er security guards (and other random guardsmen just doing their job) weren't innocent? Makes me think of a version of the earlier games that could've been where you'd only be allowed to kill your targets, or certain factions of enemies (IE the British soldiers in III - NOT the guards wandering the city - or the folks of the ships you'd board or forts you'd invade in IV) thus making the games more focused on stealth and being clever with your gadgets to avoid killing innocents.

Really unlikely that they hired Bob from Walmart to guard one of the headquarters of their top secret organization. If they're allowed in the building past the lobby, they're Templars, not 9-5ers.
As for guards during the Animus part of the game- I see it as this: they immediately move to kill you if you so much as trespass; literally no attempt to arrest or detain just straight to killing you, so I don't really lose much sleep over killing those guys.
The parts where you board ships and forts in IV and do raids in Valhalla though is fucked up but that's what Pirates and Vikings did 🤷🏾‍♂️ nobody said they were good people.

Alex Cross was a weird Easter Egg to make into a full blown antagonist. You don't learn anything about him if you hadn't read up on him through supplementary material, and he and Desmond's 'rivalry' was barely allowed to build before he dies without even a final word. Like his initial reveal was cool having read The Fall before playing AC3, and seeing him go crazy from the Bleeding Effect and speak Russian was neat, but that's kinda it.
I will say at least Warren Vidic was handled well. His taunting and eventual rage out at Desmond and by extension the Assassins was satisfying. Seeing him break that snide demeanor to vent his frustration on the history of the Assassin and Templar Conflict after so many games was awesome.

I've been playing through AC Valhalla, and man... I really miss Desmond as the through-line character. This was one of my favorite moments in the entire series, (really, any chance we had to be Desmond moving around and being an Assassin was a massive highlight.) They tried to make Layla the new Desmond, and Layla blows. Not even bringing back Shawn and Rebecca could save her, and I'm not wild about how they changed Shawn's looks and Rebecca's voice actress, either. The focus of the game is always on the historical part, but this central narrative with Desmond, Lucy, Shawn, and Rebecca really held it all together nicely. The series hasn't been the same without them. I was really hoping that eventually, we'd get a full game of just Desmond, until the end of III happened and it became impossible. But a modern AC game with Shawn and Rebecca would actually be really fun, especially since Watch Dogs is part of the same universe and there could be crossover mechanics and story.

I guess the Watch Dogs series gets somewhat close and there are a few references, but it's still very distinct from ever getting close to a full on Assassin's' game both plot and gameplay wise. Would still like to see this properly happen one day.
