Namaste :) Let me know in the comments if there are any other words that you'd like me to cover in a future video. I'd love to hear if this video was helpful for you? With Love from Ontario Canada! :)
Namaste I love your teaching. Thank you. I just completed my 200 RYT. Your teaching motivated me to learn more. Love your baby. Perfect! Beautiful. Made me smile the entire time.
Pronunciations of koshas, chakras, bandhas, pranayama, 8 limbs, et cetera, would be appreciated.
Thanks, Ally, for this. I’m in a 300 hour training in LA and they are all about Sanskrit. Though I have been teaching for years, my audience needs the English versions, but for the training I need to be up on my Sanskrit, so bravo!!!
Thank you so much! Very helpful 🙏 Namaste 🙏
Really helpful to know the Sanskrit and have the Asana name broken down like this. Plus seeing you with baby Jonno is so sweet!! He stole the show eh?! 💕
Thankyou for sharing this resource of Sanskrit🌻🙏✨
This is so helpful! Grateful for you and your little helper!
So appreciate this video Ally. I'm loving being a part of Embodied Wisdom YTT 🙏
Thank you ! This is so helpful for me. Appreciate this so much.
Thanks Ally. This was a great review of the pronunciation of the Sanskrit asanas. Enjoyed meeting your little one too!

I just found you video reading more into the yoga practice. I have been practicing for 4 plus years. Recently lost my yoga instructor. Trying to learn more.
I agree that it is important to respect the language of yoga! Thank you.
Thanks for making this video. Sanskrit does not drop the "a" at the end of words. That does happen in Hindi because of the schwa reduction rules. So, in Sanskrit, it is "asana", in Hindi, "asan". Camel is "Ushtrasana" (Uṣṭrāsana) in Sanskrit, so it has the "sh" after the first letter.
This is SO helpful!!!! Thanks so much for making this for us Ally. I'll definitely be revising this video. :)
I'm really really glad to hear it Jackie. I was hoping that you guys could come back to this one! :)
Thank you for this, especially all the time stamps. These will be so useful for returning. Also, have to say I loved the Yoga is Dead podcast series. I listened a couple of years ago. I may need to revisit.
Loved this Ally, so helpful! Thank you 💕💕 from 200hr YTT
Love this resource, so helpful to refer to as I learn Sanskrit during the Embodied Yoga Teacher Training.
Glad it was helpful Mary! You can always use the time stamps in the description too to find each pose. 😊
Amazing video with so much great information. I love that there is a growing knowledge of the traditional form of yoga opposed to western yoga which most people think of.
Absolutely!! It's so important to honour the roots and traditions of these practices. Namaste!
I really appreciate you breaking down why you feel learning Sanskrit is important. I love that you study with Indian teachers and add their names here. I agree it is so important to centre Indian teachers in our learning. I think you come from a very sweet, kind and caring place. I will say one thing that concerns me slightly.
While I am far from a scholar in Sanskrit it was really important to me to pronounce Sanskrit words properly and understand the why and how of the language so I have taken courses from Indian teachers (university professors of the language) and many of the pronunciations you say are incorrect. I was the same for many years until I did proper trainings. My biggest concern is that you hold teacher trainings and you have learning materials where you are teaching people to say the word incorrectly. I highly encourage you to take a high level of Sanskrit so this can change in future trainings. You may have done so already. I had no idea I was pronouncing things wrong for many years. Then I studied and understand why there is a line over some letters, why the sound is different when there are two A’s vs one A. What is a dental sound, aspirated sound etc. These are all very important to the proper pronunciation of Sanskrit. I don’t want to come across as rude at all. We are all unlearning and learning together. It’s just that you are training teachers so it so important. If you are looking for a short but comprehensive training I would highly suggest www.yogaphilosophy.com/ has a very good Sanskrit training. This is not a sales pitch. I have no connection to them. It is just a wonderful resource.
That was great, and on queue with the Balasana. Helpful saying the words out loud. EWYTT

There is often misunderstanding of the two ways of pronouncing A in Sanskrit. One is ay and one is uh. Depending on which sanskrit A is used.
