Sorry, we have been a bit late on this video. Things have been crazy busy with jet lag and other projects. After this video, we will get back into the normal swing of things as well as training videos. Thanks, everyone for following along. -Talbot

I was on the course with you in Coeur d’Alene…a first-timer. I yelled, “Great job, Lionel!” as you blasted past me on your second lap on the big bike ascent headed south out of town. You glanced slightly over your right shoulder and said “you too!” I’ll never forget it. Your honest and personal journey inspires us all. Thank you! (13:15:01 in CDA, by the way…YES!)

Jan is the fastest Triathlete on the planet but Lionel is the most inspiring. People can't relate to Jan, he's too perfect. Lionel is obviously gifted af, but he still seems like one of us who worked harder than everyone else to get where he is, and that inspires me to work my ass off.

You don’t need to waste years, just try to run for 3 months and get to 100k per week, and if you’re not sub 9min for 3k or maybe 16min for 5k, you can just stop right there (unless you’re still quite overweight).

I was watching the whole race. Was great to watch what you both were doing with pace, support crews, the ramp to keep the speed up and coping with the weather. That looked torrential rain but you motored on like it wasn’t there, except the corners, pleased you eased off for those. The commentary they were noting you seemed more hesitant on the technical sections going by the splits during the heavy rain compared to Jan. Don’t blame you, i am the same with my race bike in wet ironman races, my bike doesn’t handle that great tbh. Rubber side down is best. Your power was so consistent too like a metronome. Wasnt expecting it to be so addictive to watch. The organisation for it looked immense, credit to everyone involved even to the detail of the way your bikes stood waiting for you after the swim. Was half expecting you to start riding on the turbo the way they looked. The support from the comments all day were all coaxing you on. Probably a few got RSI from it ☺️
Love the fact you werent happy setting such a super time, so focused on the next challenge, will be cheering you on again with that mentality and the promise of getting even closer to Jan. Keep up the brilliant work.

I’ve raced many IMs and it took me a while before I new what to consume to avoid any gastric issues on the run. I’ve been taking Hammer nutrition that relies solely on maltodextrin (slow release) and absolutely no simple sugars; Lionel I highly recommend reading their take on endurance nutrition online or in their booklet. In hot conditions as I’m sure you’re aware, you need to reduce your nutritional intake and up your electrolyte and water intake. On the run I usually carry two small bottles, one with 3 gels decanted mixed in with some water and another with ‘x’ no. of electrolytes dissolved in water, then I take a small sip from each immediately before an aid station and wash down with water. This has always worked for me and thankfully did in Kona 2018. I don’t know if this helps but I wanted to share this with you and also all long distance triathletes.

Improve your form in the water, on the bike and run and you'll knock off a huge amount of time.

Excellent reflection as always and inspirational. You probably already looked at this and I feel "strange" to mention it. During the event it seemed that you had similar or higher power outputs than Jan, but he was going faster at times. Aerodynamics may be key to get a bit more speed out of the effort. His position and new 3D printed front part may get that extra speed.

I think Lionel was going faster for a while but Jan’s power remained more consistent throughout.
They are different body and weight so pure power numbers don’t tell the whole tale.

I'm kinda hoping to having a reason to watch Kona this year.
So really hope you are in condition to get the job done in Copenhagen.
At the least you're going to have some great airmiles from all that flying....:0)
I think you have the right idea with the swim, somewhere you will get the answer why he held lower watts at a fractionally higher speed and if you get the first two right, the third will fall into place and if it comes down to grit.......my money is on you.

Hi Lionel, we Germans respect your honesty and commitment to the triathlon Sport. You will get the Kona spot for sure, if not you have seen how huge you inspire us Germans as well next to Jan. Train hard and don‘t put yourself under mental pressure
