  • Building an overland/expedition truck was always going to be a challenge, but when you've got to cut holes in the cab and box it's nerve racking, and when the weather’s not playing ball it causes a problem.
    Find out where we've got to in our habitation box build, our thinking, the challenges so far, Ohh... and does Phil cut the holes in the right place?
    But that's only the tip of the iceberg, cos there's so many other things to think about and get right, if we want this to be our dream overland rig.
    Will we bring it in on time, and more importantly, on budget?
    Subscribe and join us on our truck build journey, where we share our highs and lows.

    Hey Phil, don't get ill. Classic situation, you've been head down bum up and then you take some time out and bang...you get ill. Plenty of Vit D, sleep, decent nutrition (including the wine of course..) and try to stop thinking about the project...easier said than done!

      Hi Aiden, I know you're right... I've always been this way but yeah, as long as I get some quality sleep, I'm good. Cheers 🍷🙏😀

    Had to watch this one from behind the sofa (if we had one) 😮 cutting holes in habitation units is a very scary business. So Fair play to you. Can you believe the UK is predicted to have a water shortage this summer. 🤷🏼‍♂️

      Hello you crazy kids 😃, big catch up and yes it's a scary moment when run the saw through the wall, you're just thinking "shit, I hope I've got this right" and with ten apertures to cut, it's daunting... so far, so good 👍🏻😀

    Who would have thought that watching a box get built would be interesting. But after watching all your adventures, I can understand (a little) how important it is to get everything built right. I keep thinking about how things would flex when you go off-road, etc. Truly fascinating, and educational.

    • @TheGapDecaders
      @TheGapDecaders  Před 5 měsíci

      😂😂 thank you, the importance of getting the rigidity in the sub-frame balanced with either springs or torsion-free system is absolutely key.
      We should in theory have zero flex - and yet still have enough controlled movement in the chassis/subframe to enjoy our off-road adventures.
      Otherwise, windows start popping and the box would ultimately break.
      Here's to no popping windows 🍷😀🙏

    I notice that your box has a large aluminium plate around the base on the inside. Ours has too and I've had a bit of an issue with cold bridging and condensation on the inside. It might not be an issue with yours as my daughters bed is low down just about it. I've had to insulate with stick on foam and put an air vent in the floor to cure it. Good work and best of luck to you both 👍

    • @TheGapDecaders
      @TheGapDecaders  Před 5 měsíci +1

      Thank you, we had exactly the same trim in our other truck and never had a problem - other than the garage space.
      Good ventilation is key, and this time I'm going to heat the garage with a few small vents for cross-flow ventilation.
      It's definitely something I'll keep an eye on, but I think the 100mm panels may well help.
      Appreciate your thoughts. 🙏☺
      Cheers Phil

    Clearly measure 17 times, cut once, works.
    I know what you mean - 'build' becomes everything and you cannot stop thinking about it. I recall my best inspiration time was about 5am.
    I hope the break in Northern Ireland means you are able to switch off.
    Incidentally, you haven't mentioned the budget recently. Do you remain confident to achieve a £100k build?

    • @TheGapDecaders
      @TheGapDecaders  Před 4 měsíci +1

      Hello Peter, apologies for my ridiculously late reply - it's been a tad manic recently, and yes, the build takes over our lives 😩.
      Feels like the NI break is long gone but I'm definitely with you re 0500hrs, I actually keep a notebook by my bed for those light bulb moments 😀.
      Our latest video is on the back of this comment, we've had a few people ask specifics, but this prompted us to put something out there, so thank you.
      Hopefully it answers your question 🙏
      Cheers Phil & Izzy 🍷☺

    If it helps, 3/4 of my truck build time is spent looking for my tape measure, my pencil and my head torch :)
    BTW - we have the same tape measure! :)

    My patience is way too short for rain and wind delays, I would have rented a garage to do all of the cut work, installed and sealed all of the windows and door. This way work inside can proceed. One has to value their time on large projects. Other than that this is looking to be an interesting project!

    • @TheGapDecaders
      @TheGapDecaders  Před 4 měsíci

      Yeah, that's the ideal... but the reality is that multiple tasks are happening consecutively throughout the weeks involving the box and base rig, plus renting such a space at present is upwards of £800 per month, plus logistics.
      Being the wettest winter on record didn’t help.
      Cheers P&I 🙏🍷😀

    Just think of the good times to come it will be worth all the rain in the end! Wanted to know how did you seperate the aluminium from the steel for the corrosion issue between aluminium and steel on the cab through? Just starting a Unimog build but i have had to wait for better weather! i live in Australia and its been to hot to work in the workshop and outside, so now its getting colder i can start to work on it! (I am from uk originally so used to the rain stopping play) looking forward to seeing the build evolve! As a Brit "Keep Calm Carry On!"

    • @TheGapDecaders
      @TheGapDecaders  Před 5 měsíci

      Cheers Andy, indeed and that's exactly what drives me forward 😀
      We used a Polyurethane tape, ridiculously adhesive and water-tight. It's not finished yet as there's a curvature in the cab and we need it to be flush with the hab box, so box on before it can be finished.
      I do love a Mog (my next build, just don't tell Izzy).
      Good luck with the build 😀🙏

    Hi, great videos as always. I’ve been a long time lurker, read loads of articles on your website years ago (so forgot most of it) I know you mentioned that you were going to go into it on the build, but I was wondering what the pros and cons of different toilets? ( am I right in thinking that a composting toilet you can dig a hole and get rid of the stuff?
    Another little question is, can you use home battery storage units in a van? I’ve never really looked at it so don’t know if they don’t like movement but the Tesla Powerwall 3 is getting released soon and it can discharge at 11.5 kw which is pretty amazing

    • @TheGapDecaders
      @TheGapDecaders  Před 4 měsíci

      HI,
      The best thing to do is watch our video in the Separett Tiny compost Toilet, Izzy did loads of research and she explains the difference between a Compost and composting toilet.
      See Toilet link below
      czcams.com/video/f5QiSYXB41U/video.htmlsi=AT9hGE6A4Tke7hHX
      Re batteries, very possibly but the biggest issue will always be the battery management, yes 11.5kw is impressive but are they deep cycle, maybe a question for Tesla. 🙏☺
