It's a shame. Mafia 2 just feels so empty. With some life sim elements, where you can buy things and manage criminal rackets, and a storyline that wasn't cut down, it could have been the best crime game ever made.
If it wasnt for 2K, the game would be 8 chapters longer with 4 different endings...When it was being developed solely by the Czech team, it was all different and it might've turned out better, if Daniel Vávra was the head of development

Man mafia 2 was already great as it is, but learning about the cut contents is just a shame. Heard originally they were gonna make a entire campaign where you were in Sicily during the War, instead of one sole mission. Maybe more chapters in prison as well. Option to join the Vinci Family. Etc. Its probably too late for them to make a remake and add all this in, but Mafia 2 seriously had the greatest potential
Sadly it's a repeating trend, big money buys creative franchises only to turn them to crap.

They delayed the game by like 3-4 years but yeah its sad they removed a lot of things
They had to delay the game because of 2K joining mid-development...whenit was made solely by Czech developers, the game was suppossed to be approx. 8 chapters longer with something around 4 endings...however 2K games went into the process and made way too many changes which resulted in a lot of cut content and shorter campaign

@@atlasprime6193 The final game doesn't look like GTA IV like 2k primarily wanted. Just look at it, they tried to make it a GTA, but thank God they didn't have enough time so the game was cut, and without all of this alpha stuff the game just is better. Empire Bay is a small City, without much to do, adding all of these just wouldn't work. The game is good as it is.
Jurek Łopuszański its not really a good thing when the development is messy and the game is only 1/3 of what you were making it tbh because of the development it feels more like its trying to be a movie than an open world game even when playing the game its extremely noticeable its far from what the developers were trying to do with the open workd

KMac not the devs fault they were pressured my higher ups at 2K Czech to just throw away the unfinished content and release the game APAP and when the game didn’t sell as much as they thought it would they fired some of the devs some of whom worked there for years

Its incredible that even with removing a humongous chunk of the ambition they had for this game originally, it's still one of the best games ever made. Thats compassion right there
Yes I give them credit for still being able to make a great game despite a lot of deadlines and having to sacrifice content in order to do so.
It just pisses me off that this and Mafia III weren't given the same treatment as GTA V and the Red Dead Redemption games. I honestly think if the Former(s) were they would put GTA V to shame and would at least match the quality of Red Dead Redemption 1 & 2 to say the least.

Mafia II is a average game at best.
The story and setting is great, but the rest falls extremely flat.

GTA V was developed by a team of 1000 developers, over a 7 year period, with a budget of 250 million.
While Mafia III was developed by 150 people, at a budget of around 80 million....

There was a lot of videos from devs diary, where you could see a lot of cut content. Those probably removed now after 10 years. From 2010 game industry has changed. Devs were told to rush the game out. I remember when DLC era has started. You have to pay same amount after game release two weeks later for additional shitty content. Its same situation these days. Games has good graphics (but everything else is quite piece of shit) and us (buyers) are attracted by "first look". Me as a game developer can clearly see how much effort was put back then and how much is now.

I think they should make a new mafia game with all of these contents instead of remake old game, keeping remake old games is kind of lazy and some of the cut contents here if being brought back could affect a lot on the story line

Now it makes sense. Open world is not-so-open, even the story is feels rushed near to the end and ends without real conclusion.
With those cut content, Mafia II could've been a masterpiece. But it's just feels... not enough.
It would have been nice to have a lot of this content added to the Definitive Edition

Seeing cut content always makes me sad. I wish game developers would just leave cool little details like these into games like this even if it does mean a few more months and even a year working on the title. Red Dead Redemption 2 took years to complete and what we got was a huge interactive and living open world, and we all know how well that game was received. Well, the singleplayer anyway.

The closest detailed game to this I’ve EVER played is RDR 2, and that was released in 2018 so for back in 2010, this game was way ahead of time... with these tiny little details, it would make the game a whole lot better but with mafias details already it’s a great game... I personally would’ve liked to have the barber shop and the real estate place that was cut...
And yet, even with all this lost stuff and a decade or so long gap between it and Lost Heaven, this game still turned out fuckin incredible!
Just imagine all this features are fully developed in Mafia 2 and playable. It would become a real contender to GTA

i was playing mafia2 yesterday and i was near a boatyard and there was literally stealth-grass. It was like 3ft tall grass, when you walked inside it he automatically crouched and walked slower. I think it was a stealth system or something that never got added

At 2:50 you can see some picture of cars on a board, maybe there are a couple of missions there, maybe some heist or stealing some cars for the car vendor.
Maybe this way you can unlock unique cars that you can buy after stealing them for this car vendor maybe some discounts aswell who knows 😏🥂

They remastered it, and they ignored all the cut content that could have make this a HUGE game! The combat system and house buying could have been amazing!

I think those finishing moves all made it into the final game, i'm not 100% sure but I feel like I've seen them in game.

I always felt Mafia 2 was not complete. It felt pretty bland compared to Mafia 1. Also there were a lot of options in place that did not really have a use. Opening the trunk for example.

Wow I always thought mafia 2 was amazing when I first played it. Mainly because I loved the 50s atmosphere. I really hope they get a chance to make another game in this Era with all of this stuff included. I mean just imagine buying a car or house. Imagine free roam online.. That's stuff GTA online did years later. If only they just had more time 😔

Mafia 2 and halo 2 almost have the save dev story. both had different engines from the ones they first started out on, they both had alot cut from them, the making of the game was hell. And last but not least if both games had just a little more time they could have been the best games. still very good games but not the status these gamnes deserve! really sad to see that they need to put games like this out when there are still so many things they could make and add on to thats why i like how some game studios mostly indie :( take their time and say the game is done when it is done.

Those who expected the Mafia 2 definite edition adding them back seems to be too hopeful. Considering the original devs probably no longer works with 2k games. Its probably better that way.
Original devs were cut away from 2K games...2K Czech is non-existant at this point...they are also making the remake of Mafia 1 without Daniel Vávra who is the man behind the story and idea of Mafia series...

There are rumors that they are remastering this game. I wish they would bring back some of these cut content so we can play this game as it was meant to be played :)

It's a shame that things happened the way they did, but game development is risky and expensive, so that just happens sometimes. But I find the definitive edition to be inexcusable.
