  • F1 Racing Championship was a game developed by Ubisoft in 2000. It featured all the 22 drivers and 11 teams from the 1999 Formula One World Championship, as well as the 16 tracks (including the brand new Sepang Circuit. The game featured great graphics and realistic handling. At the time, it was facing steep competition by the ever-popular Grand Prix 3 and the rising F1-series by ISI. The sales were behind expectations. Reasons were a poor artificial intelligence and damage model and the bug-prone initial release. A patch to fix the reported issues was announced, but never released.

Damn this channel is so underrated, whenever I want to know something about an N64 game the first thing I do is type in your name and then the title of the game. I can always rely on top quality content and I really hope your channel blows up one day.
This game actually looks like it could be pretty fun in short bursts. I've never cared for F1 but the graphics are really good on this one as well as the handling seems really tight.

I think every next gen gamer...as in gamers under age 12 need to experience the n64 and super nes to truly understand great games and masterpieces.....

This is my favorite F1 game on N64. The controls are excellent! It's a more complete game than FWGP 1 and 2. The graphics and physics are better too.

For me this is streets ahead of F1 World Grand Prix II. I played both excessively back in the day and would always go back to F1 Racing Championship. The AI is much better. AI cars actually slipstream and overtake each other and you. They don't follow a set path like F1 World Grand Prix II or do weird catch up tricks like all other F1 games on the N64 (even Monaco GP which otherwise is very similar). This means if you're on a strategy that leaves you out front while others pit, the others don't just automatically catch up becuase you're out front. Excluding when the opposition cars are in catc up mode on the other game F1 Racing Chamipionship actually has faster AI and is consistently more challenging to race against. The cars actually collide with each other in this game and spin in a non predetermined scripted way (in F1 World Grand Prix II I knew when the other cars would retire even with 1998 events turned off.
I never felt screwed over, if I lost on this game I just felt like I wasn't fast enough and could do more to improve, and the next time I played the game it would be a new experience. The performance of the AI drivers was sufficiently ransomised from race to race to keep things fresh but not too much that it was unrealistic. This a concept the racing games struggle with to this day (some of the F1 PS2 games were the worst and had almost the same race order almost every race)
In the F1 World Grand Prix games there are bugs in some of the tracks that will cause your car to crash or lose control in the middle of the track which is completely absent from F1 Racing Championship. The collision detection is also far more consistent on this game albeit more forgiving. These might be because in F1 Racing championship (and Monaco GP) cars are pretty much glued to the surface of the track rather then the pseudo 3-dimensional physics of the F1 World Grand Prix games. While the F1 World Grand Prix games were technically more ambitious in this respect I think they tried a bit too much and didn't quite pull it off and F1 Racing Championships simple engine was more polished and enjoyable to play. The simpler physics may have allowed better AI to be implemented on F1 Racing Championship as cars could actually drive the near 2D track based on simpler equations and work out new lines if they were slipstreaming, overtaken or slowed by other cars etc. Whereas in F1 World Grand Prix the best line to take was often more illogical due to the quirks of the game engine so the AI cars appear been forced to accelerate or brake within set lanes (normal or catch up) to overcome this.
I really loved this game and is even one I've dipped back into years later.

I really want to like F1WGP but I have to admit that F1RC is really better for me. I think the feel is just more accurately simulated in F1RC. F1WG is a not a bad game, it's also quite good, just a bit below the level of F1RC.
      Update:
After trying again on F1WGP2 i feel like maybe This F1WGP series is just very hard for a beginner. It seems like F1WGP is unforgiving for any small mistake on cornering timing.
So I take back my words. I think F1WGP is just as good as this one, it just is a bit jumpy on steering/cornering part, make small mistakes and bad timing then you got out of the way.
Hey, I'm just playing on android emulator, who am I to judge?

I think this particular saga ( Monaco Grand Prix, racing simulation and F1 Racing Championship) aged pretty well compared to other contemporary games. as you said, AI is one of the best even for today standards. They race you hard without being extremely dirty, almost always gives you space when overtake, and if there is contact is almost in all cases your fault as a player rather than a dumb AI move. Great handling, physics , tire deg, fuel strategy ,damage model . is funnier than other ones cuz you can make mistakes and still win if you are a good enough. IMHO this in general is one if the race games that i loved most, with NFS Porsche

I'm really happy to see that someone finally acknowledges that this game was released outside of Europe. I remember seeing this game a few months ago on a pickups video on Adam Koralik's channel, where he said this was one of N64 Europeans exclusives, and I told him it wasn't, even showing him some pictures of it. Last year, I helped finding and buying a copy of this game to a fellow American collector who wanted to play it on his NTSC console (Brazil used to use PAL-M, a mix between PAL and NTSC-U/C). Too bad F1WGP2 didn't find its way to Brazil, tho.

Hey Glenn, this is a comment from my friend Gabriele, not me.
"Usually I like your reviews but this time I have to disagree with almost every point.
    - car models aren't original, only colors and decals are original. Polygonal models are the same for every car and look different only in the vehicle selection screen
    - Indianapolis is not in the game, it was introduced in 2000 championship
    - you said that arcade fans should prefer Monaco GP. Why? It's the same game without licence (time on tracks are the same and cars physics too) but with less arcade features like the Pick Up and Play mode and without the autobrake introduced in F1RC (that removed the career mode too). So why Monaco should me more arcade? It's definitely less arcade without any kind of doubt of space for different interpretations.
    - I'm a huge F1 fan and I can assure that in simulation mode driving physics (especially understeering and oversteering) are more realistic than F1 WGP 1 and 2, and if you play full laps races even the race dynamics are much more similar to real life than the Paradigm titles.
    - also there are minor mistakes in the arcade/simulation differences explanations."
He tried posting earlier but it never showed up unless he was logged in and even then only he could see it. For a moment I thought you were deleting comments but this seems to be a CZcams problem. Terribly sorry for suspecting you. You work very hard for the n64 community for 1 man. Some mistakes are inevitable he just wanted to point them out respectfully. We couldn't tell any expansion pak difference either. What a mystery

For me, this is just an ok title. I never liked the handling, it feels way too D-pad like, whereas in F1 World Grand Prix 2, it felt like there was very good force feedback. The cars also look really tiny to me, and the collisions feel like hitting the safety car in modern f1 games. The tracks are also very flat like in F1 ‘98, and because of that and the lack of scenery, they all blend together, unlike in F1 World Grand Prix 2 where all tracks had distinguishable features. The AI also feel like they’re just set pieces, in F1 World Grand Prix 2 they were erratic and the collisions you had with them felt a tad glitchy, especially if you’ve seen my first video on the game where I ended up inside of a sauber, but in this game they feel like mobile blocks which you have to navigate and they don’t put up too much of a fight, unlike F1 World Grand Prix 2 where the leader could make your life a misery if you didn’t overtake him quickly. People have mentioned the lack of rubber-banding, but I honestly think that for a Nintendo 64 game, F1 World Grand Prix 2 benefits from it as the leader only gets so close to you, and he doesn’t just stream past you like in Mario Kart 64, he stays behind you in an attempt to pressure a mistake from the player, which is actually a really convincing effect. In this, every driver is the same, they follow a set path, they are really slow in the corners, and once you pass them, you never see them again. If you get on the grass on this game, you are guaranteed to spin out no matter what if you don’t come to a near stop, which feels very archaic and not akin to a “simulation” as this game is attempting to brand itself as. In F1 World Grand Prix 1 and 2, there was an effect on the wheels which simulated motion blur for the Goodyear/Bridgestone logo, and it was really impressive for an N64 game is it slow transitioned into a model with a transparency effect. In this game, instead of the seamless transition on the tyres, it just switches to another texture which just looks like the paint is still wet and getting smudged, it’s a minor detail but it just adds to the theme that this is just an alright alternative to the excellent WGP series which goes all out with the minor details and goes the full length to make it the definitive Formula simulation of the 5th generation of consoles. So I agree with the judgement that this is just an alright alternative, and you should really be playing F1 World Grand Prix 2 if you want the best F1 experience for the fifth generation of consoles.

I like that your channel's video list alone highlights one of the big flaws of the N64 lineup. There was a glut of racing games on the system, both licensed and unlicensed, arcade and simulation. The problem was that there were so many that it was easy for them to get lost in the shuffle next to each other. The other problem was that it was hard to ignore the fact that racing was done better on competing systems, such as Sega Rally and Daytona on Saturn and Gran Turismo on PS1.

I know this is off-topic but I recently got a new old game called Castlevania 64 and James Bond 007 for the Game Boy Colour yesterday from my friend. He's moving to a new house so he have to sell his old games to his friends. Luckily, I received a friend discount. He's going to sell it on Ebay for £40 but he sold it to me for £30. As for James Bond 007, he gave it to me for free. Since I never played these games before period, they'll be new experiences for me.

N64 Glenn Plant Hopefully, I'll be able to review this game and Castlevania 64 in the future. For now, they'll be put to one side due to me being swamped with a backlog with articles, reviews and news articles to write. Besides, I haven't played Skylar & Plux: Adventure On Clover Island yet and I want to play it first.

I just got this NTSC copy to do an episode of "it's expensive but is it good?" It looks like it won't be, and I say this looking up a review AFTER I've already played it for a couple hours. God damn is it stiff and just not fun, it's annoying as hell.
