    6 exceptions to backbiting:
    - If the person has wronged you in any way and you are telling someone that can fix the situation
    - if you are warning someone about someone else
    - if you are seeking a fatwa (ruling) to know if a situation is halal or haram and it involves someone else
    - if you are seeking help about a situation + have to give details abt a specific person
    - if they are a public sinner (make it intentional so u dont slip into idle talk)
    - if that person is committing open and clear innovation (bidah) after having advised him privately

Backbiting doesn't require the intended person to be unhappy about it instead saying anything evil is forbidden whether that person likes it or hates it. But if that person has been openly found involved or in danger of falling in any forbidden activities you may speak against him both in public or in secret. Also saying against oppression doesn't fall into backbiting but here too you must protest with good words.

A few mins ago i was talking to my brother about backbiting and we were trying to define it. He used our neighbours as an example and i signalled to him to stop talking about it because it is common in our household to talk about those neighbours in a bad way. He finished his sentence and there wasn't backbiting, he just said something along the lines of "for example if the neighbours arent here and we talk about them." Was this backbiting from my side?
    May Allah protect us

He didn’t say anything bad about your neighbors according to your comment, so there shouldn’t be any wrong in that, Allah knows best

What about warning someone about bad behavior? For example, my wife has a lot of bad behavior in her family, and I also have a lot of bad behavior in mine, and I want to be sure that we do not take after our families in this way. She understands these things to be normal, and so I bring up such and such a person, and what they did, and how actually it is harmful for these reasons, and how we shouldn't be like so and so. Is that backbiting?

Many scholars say that you should make up for it by talking in a positive manner about the person in the same gathering. This is an excerpt from a scholar explaining what one should do (apart from repenting from the sin):
"(A person should) Try and make up for what he had said earlier before others by denying the presence of things and qualities he had alleged were in them and clear the person or persons involved. Follow up by mentioning and asserting good qualities of those he had spoken ill of in the presence of the same people in whose company he had slandered them. Defend the people he had slandered when they are slandered in his presence. Pray to Allah in private to forgive the sins and shortcomings of those he had wronged."

I said a sheikh had no filter. It wasn’t meant as an insult or backbiting, even though I guess it could be interpreted as one. Could this be considered backbiting?

Salam. Brother Rhyad mentions the exceptions as to what is NOT backbiting in the video. I am unsure of his sources, so use that information at your own discretion.
Cross-reference what is being said by the sheikh in question and you will be able to tell if he is back biting someone.

Salam. Say Ameen instead of in sha Allah when making dua, be certain that Allah subhanahu w ta'ala will grant you what you ask of Him. ♡
You can delete this comment and repent sincerely to Allah The Most Merciful (saying AstaghfirAllah w atou-bu elay) and correct your mistake to the people you hurt by admitting your wrongness to the people you spoke the backbiting to, and asking forgiveness of the person you hurt. And of course not participating in it again.

Generally speaking, there is no gheebah for the kaafir except the dhimee. However, although not haraam, it’s still not good Islamic etiquette to do so. Allah knows best.

    • @freestylegamingartist8192
      @freestylegamingartist8192 Před 2 měsíci +1

Salam. They might become your brother/sister and accept Islam later. Unless if you mean denier (kafir)?
Regardless, this could fall under idle talk or gossip. If it's a serious issue then it should be confronted directly. Often times backbiting is cowardice and hypocrisy/lack of self awareness to our own sins, flaws, current poor state and failure to prepare ourselves for The Day of Judgement (too busy looking at others' flaws).
A made up scenario to illustrate your question would help greatly.
