Is it safe to buy Rolex on eBay with eBay authentication?

  • eBay recently launched an authentication service to help ensure you receive a real Rolex, not a fake Rolex watch. But is the service foolproof? In other words, is it safe to buy a Rolex GMT, Rolex Submariner or other luxury watch on eBay?

    I recently purchased a Heuer Monaco new on eBay and it went through their authentication process. It was a few hundred dollars less than list. The watch was fine I even brought it into a Tag AD because I had some questions about the watch and they didn't say it was fake.

    Ebay authentication will only tell you if a watch meets the minimum requirement to be considered authentic Rolex. Don't expect them to verify original Rolex parts. You have to specifically ask the seller if they can guarantee the watch has legit parts, and have this convo in writing.

    Recently bought a SD 16600 from Fed at Delray watch. Amazing neo vintage example with a full set. Took it to my AD to get an extra link, and they thought I paid thousands more. Great advice!

    I only trust buying from an AD. So many Franken Rolexes unless new but there in lies the problem. No steel pieces

    Do your homework. A frankenwatch can be OK, but then know about the crown, hands, fonts, bezel, case, caseback, crystal, movement, and whether each is year-correct, and pay the right price only and not full price or slightly lower price. Research, research, research and check everything. Then buy.

    As the previous owner of an old GMT do not trust a bezel that has a faded blue. Only the red fades.

    I bough a Rolex on eBay, watch was real. The down side was they sent it with a broken second hand that fell off in a week. I wouldn’t buy anything off there.

      Maybe it was damaged while being inspected by the authenticators.

    Today I saw someone selling a fake Sea-Dweller (judging from the bezel minute track) and I just laughed at how ridiculous it was. Not only did the listing read "GMT-Master II," but the dial said "Submariner." Again, it had the Sea-Dweller bezel and was 43 mm. Simply put, everything was wrong. It was 2-tone but clearly the "gold" was plated, and (get this) it had a push-button clasp. That alone was evidence enough, even without the suspicious case shape, wrong size crown, non-engraved rehaut and stubby hour hand. EDIT: Just to clarify, I did report the item.

    Why are we not discussing the most important aspect of Ebay, watch buying and having the watch case opened? Ebay tells me they open the back case for inspection, unless its a clear back. So a Rolex will be opened, allegedly, because some say, they take watches in and the same day they ship them out, but lets assume that they do, which is what concerns me. Are they properly checking the seal and if need be, are they replacing it with a factory standard seal? Are they properly pressurizing the watch to factory standards. Ebay says yes. Ok, so they have high quality gaskets for all makes and models and are properly closing them and again, pressurizing the watch? Who is responsible if I buy a high end Divers watch and the watch gets water in it, even though the crowns are properly closed, I asked. They had no response, other than, their company in Ohio is very reputable and please don't worry. Why no mention of this?

      Interesting. I am new to watch buying. I was interested in an older Rolex datejust on eBay. The price was reasonable and the seller said the watch was recently serviced. The seller had 100% positve rating on over 1000 sales. Seems a totally legit seller and was selling much higher end Rolex than the one I was interested in. The Authentication process was not listed as an option for this watch, he said it was a mistake because all his other watches had this on their listing. If I am not mistaking eBay requires it for watch purchases over 2000$.
      The seller let me know he was not a fan of the Authentication procedure for exact reasons you stated above. My question is, if you do not go through that process will it affect your abilty to return the watch for a refund if there is an issue? I wonder what is the percentage of watches the authenticators fail and send back to the seller.

      @nerychristian Před 10 měsíci

      I think it's all a scam. New watches shouldn't require this type of inspection. Unless it's a Rolex, I can't really imagine that many people are selling fake "new" watches. And what if I buy a new watch on eBay, and it gets sent to these authenticators, and they end up scratching the case? When I receive the watch, and I notice a scratch, do I blame the seller or the authenticator? At that point there is nothing you can do, because it is basically your word against theirs.

    Not always a vintage watch is a franke, I sold my 4 vintage Rolex datejust collection for $10k 3 years ago, every single watch was 100% authentic and I know that because I took those to a Rolex store, now 3 years later is probably $30k, 😩😩😩😩
