Be Seen, Unseat the Elites

  • The elites are taking advantage of our existential loneliness and paralyzing anxiety. We need to unseat the elites by embarking on a grassroots revolution which would involve: self-seeing, storytelling, and networked community cells. When no one else sees us, we see ourselves as a form of self-soothing. Narcissism is everywhere, even in fashion, the food industry and physics! It is an organizing principle of our civilization, not merely a clinical entity.

This reminds me of something Vaclav Havel (former President of the post Soviet Czech Republic) said along the lines of surviving under totalitarian rule (pre 1989) by building 'alternative structures'. It was about opting out of the existing order and for example meeting in small, trusted groups to discuss what really matters to personal happiness, by creating authentic communities and so 'being seen'. As I recall, music often played a role, campfire song style, poetry too. We default to thinking that everything worth having has to be somehow tech or internet based (as ironically is this channel) but that is a paradigm that can be broken. We need a bottom up, back to basics, 'return ourselves to ourselves' approach and that way to learn to love ourselves and one another again. Technology can never do that so recognise its limitations and look elsewhere and work towards what really matters.

In her book A Biography of Loneliness, the cultural historian Fay Bound Alberti wrote that it has little to do with being alone: “It is a conscious, cognitive feeling of estrangement or social separation from meaningful others; an emotional lack that concerns a person’s place in the world.” It is harder to define, and harder still to treat, especially the longer the feeling lasts.

To be seen in our society we have to “call out” our perceived pain. Ironically the pain of not being seen. Wicked smart Professor Vaknin….to “call in” self perceived empaths and saviors.

Not all of us are unseen. I am seen and I see in my family. That's why family is important. I know not everyone has this experience with family; some have terrible experiences. But, as difficult as family life can be, I'm thankful that we have love in our family. You must be self sacrificing but it pays off as you work to self sacrifice for each other. This is why the family is so important and it's also what the power behind narcissism aims to destroy. If you have it, its a difficult thing to protect in this world, but not impossible. If you don't believe in God, it's much harder. ❤

While I agree with most of what you say here, I must demur on the "property owners / PhDs should have more votes". When an economic system is rigged so that people who start out in poverty can hardly climb out of it, and have no access to $$ for down payments or a good education so they can pursue higher education, then no, the elites who have these things should not get more votes than the great unwashed. I know society cannot ever be perfect, but there are systemic reasons why elites continue to maintain their position - and the system we have here is the US is not a meritocracy, no matter how often it is argued that we are. Still, much of what you say here is accurate IMO. Just my $.02

maybe what we need is to be NOTICED, which obviously includes being seen.. but noticing also includes to really perceive, respect, pay heed to, taking account, consider, feel/sense something in regards of the other person. Being noticed is a premise, that you can be CARED FOR in an appropriate way.
Just seeing something does not require any interest or personal involvement. I see a lot of things I don't give a shit about, don't care about. I also see the garbage, that needs to be taken out, but I might prefer to ignore it.
It's interesting that we chose the technical term over the relational to describe an emotional need we have.
Maybe the SEEING is causing our objectification, that turns us into a thing? So consequently we should need to reinstall the original NOTICING instead - because it is connected to the basic human feeling of "caring about/for" our babies, children ec. So yes, the picture takes the place of the living being, we are obsessed with all these pictures because that's all we have left - as soon as we would be actually noticed, and therefor cared about in a loving way, our addiction for pictures would disappear magically. It's a dead surrogate. Our language is full of such "mistakes", I suspect this is a huge problem, a cage, we created for ourselves. Our living verbs disappear, the dead nouns take over.
This language itself is our most solid gatekeeper. At least this is a theory I developed recently on my weird quest.

Am I the only one feeling a tad suicidal right now? Lol. This was a tough one, even worse than the one where he explains how the narcissist perceives his own existence. Goodluck to human kind, we surely need it, seeing that we can no longer count on our own minds, nor the minds of others. I'm gonna go lock myself in my bedroom and cry in desperation for a few days now. And after that I should really try to make some friends.

I’ve reached the point where his videos are the main source of calmness, of all things.
I mean, I’d rather have the threat identified and analyzed. Even if it crushes the most cherished delusions. Or maybe that's the main reason. I find the state much more endurable than the vague feeling that something is off with the world, with me, and being unable to put my finger on it.
awareness is depressing but it's also a first step in healing.
