Most Consistent Dripper I've Used: Orea V3 Overview

- For those curious- most consistent does not necessarily equate to favorite. I think, out of the box, this brewer is arguably more consistent than others because it a) doesn't stall (i've not had one stall yet), b) has superior thermal stability, and c) is a flat bottom brewer, which tend to be a bit more easy to control.
Anyway, I hope you enjoyed the video! It was a short one, so if you dig that shorter format on occasion, make sure to hit the like!

Humbling to hear your thoughts Lance! Keep up the great work and thank you for the inspiration and feedback 🙏🏻
I cannot wait for mine to arrive in a few weeks.
Never been more excited for a new brewer to add to the coffee bar.
Also their sense cups/Carafe are above and beyond!
Great video Lance! And a really good title - I had exactly the same thoughts as I started brewing with it a week ago. Best flat bottom brewer I have ever used. Quick flow, great consistency, very even tasting brews and super high extractions. And the circle negotiator filters work perfect
You're a stud. Thanks, Alan!
Thanks for another nice review.
Have a great weekend, Lance.
Hi Lance: I love your longer videos! Its the extra detail that really helps me improve. This brewer merits a longer video with some of your talented tuition and added tweaks!
My man Lance with another great video!
I got my hands on one of these from Horia in Sheffield this past weekend. Great insight and overview as usual Lance. Looking forward to using this as my daily filter brewer. Luckily I also got the negotiator and papers too.
As an amateur in this whole ordeal of coffee making, i want to thank you. You've helped a lot!
Thank you for commenting! So glad you enjoy what I create! Means a lot
@@LanceHedrick Out of curiosity what setting were you grinding on for the Orea with the Ode?
Just got mine today. Thanks for the video!!
Nice! Ordered! This will be my first flat brewer, very excited
Oh nice! You'll unlock a different world of coffee. should be excited!
@@LanceHedrick will have 200 papers to experiment 😅
great video as always keep it up man!
Agree. The previous models did not pique my interest. But this seems like a great little brewer.
Great review Lance!! Keep these reviews/educational seshes coming!! =)
Thanks! Will do!
Cool little brewer!
Having custom fit / seamed filters will be important. The circle smash looks like it works, but it also looks like it may suffer from similar problems to the Chemex with the pleated parts of the filter having multiple layers of filter unevenly distributed around the sides. Won’t be quite as egregious since the filters adhere to the walls better so the bottom is the clear exit point, but you definitely still get some coffee side-exiting, so that seems like an obvious improvement. Glad to see a flat bottom, steep walled brewer that is getting rid of those frilly filters. 🙏
Pre-order in can't wait to try it out 😊
Fantastic! I think you'll quite enjoy it! Very fun brewer, indeed
The idea of negotiator is genial. Why wasn't this a thing until now?
That filter insertion was intense 😳
Flat bottom brewers make the coffee world go round.
The holder is removable with different colour options of recycled plastics... And if you mod one of those holders, you can make yourself a Melodrip holder! (not backwards compatible with the Orea dripper).
#goat keep up the great content! Best coffee content creator on CZcams!
Appreciate that so much! thanks for the support
Great video as always, I'm just curious how exactly do you fold trapezoidal filters to fit in a flat bottom (Kalita) brewer?
Lance, you are amazing brotha, hope to share a cup of coffee with you one day.
Keep these videos coming, absolutely love them
Thank you! If ever in Arkansas...
Negotiator master!
Phew, glad I got my order in a week ago, Horia is going to be inundated with new orders now! 😅 Thanks for your review! 🙌
This video literally made me pre-order mine!
I'm sure that's the case for many! My 185 size arrived today in the UK.
Hey Lance! Decided to try flat bottom brewers now that I have had a lot of time with V60… I wondered if you have kept up with what is coming up with Orea. Specifically, I was going to buy the Orea V3…. Then I saw the V4. Love the idea of modularity. I was stuck between narrow and wide options. Wish I could have enough money to try both, but thought it might make a nice video! Especially since we haven’t seen much on pour overs lately ;).
Keep up the good work!
Same here, would love to hear thoughts about the V4! Looks like an actual game-changer (as opposed to most "game-changers" which never really change the game).
Great info. I am looking at the latest Orea but also considering the April brewer. Do you have video for the latest April brewer ? Thanks
I loved the review and it really felt honest of you. I bought mine some weeks ago and I cannot wait to have it.
I wanted to ask, would you mind to share where we can but those paper filters you used? I have the same idea as you with the kalita papers but I din't know this "trick". TIA.
Cool review. I’d love to see you do a taste comparison of filter vs espresso extraction for various beans and roasts.
Awesome review. I kinda want to plug it into the switch to see how that would work out 🤔
Me: 10 min ago- checked CZcams for new LH video. Sad face. 2 min ago, saw notification on IG new video just posted. Me: now- happy face.
:)
haha! Love it! Thanks for watching, as usual, Brent.
Favourite, didn’t think I’d hear it
haha! My favorite (currently) flat bottom. tricolate is my favorite no bypass and kono my favorite conical
Just wanna say that I wasn't the biggest fan of your stuff earlier on.
This new content is great, I think you've found your style and are settling into it really well.
What about my earlier content didn't you like? I ask because I don't feel I'm doing anything differently haha! Cheers
@@LanceHedrick
Haha oh that’s interesting.
I’d say you’re less verbose now, much more straight to the point and you don’t repeat or ramble.
I think it’s a lot tighter editing too.
Keep it up!
@@LanceHedrick I'd echo this as well. I always liked your content overall, but feel that times you'd meander a bit too much. The last few videos have been shorter and more focused. I don't want to say "never digress", but that I think the last few videos have found a really good balance! 😁
Thank you for everything!
I like the ramblings. You can't please everyone Lance, you do you! 👊
Great video
Hey lance , love your content ! Would it be reluctant to get this brewer if I already have a stagg x ? ( Modified with an origami wood base and flair puck screen on the bottom)
Sounds amazing. Unfortunaely not available here in my country. Whats your thought on Mesh Metal / Stainless Steel Pour Over dripper...any good?
Could you do a comparison with the kalita filters? Measure extraction etc. Those flat filters are not so easy to get hold of
Amazing video. I also never use my Stagg bc of the papers. I want this now.
Stagg takes 185 Kalita papers just fine
Looooove my OREA V2, looking forward to getting a V3.
You got a flat bottom brew tutorial pending? 🥺🥺🥺
Would be so curious to get your thoughts on the upcoming Orea V4 when it comes out! Did you get a chance to try it yet? Would be awesome to get your take on narrow vs wide versions!
could you use the negotiator with kalita and fellow filters? It would be nice to be able to use readily available filters,
was that using the Ode+SSP ? ... my beds look similar at the end (quite a lot of "muddy" fines, even if the drawdown time seems okay) and I'm trying to figure out if that amount of fines is normal/optimal, especially for SSP Unimodals. what are your thoughts?
very compelled by this brewer, thanks for the video! ... never was interested by the previous models (especially the price tag) but this one looks interesting! cheers!
Hey lance, thanks for another great video. With this brewer I can't seem to get a flat bed (no issues with a V60), seems to slope to one side despite the swirls. Any idea why this might be?
I am lost, like someone opening a door to a advance level chess tournament. Everything you said made no sense and with all the terminology use I literally didn't know we were talking about coffee until the middle of the video. Yet you seemed like an expert talking about what you loved was every interesting! Great vid
do you think this way of inserting the filter paper into the brewer would also work in a v60 with the proper “negotiator” (I always fight against the paper cone to have well stuck agains the walls…)?
Hi Lance! Any idea on the diameter of the filter? For the lab grade option?
Also, i'm getting a large orea. Planning on using it on 10-15g coffee brews. Should I get the 155 or 185 filter? Thanks
Negotiator with Espro filters also works pretty well in the StaggX 😉
Do you mean the Negotiator will flatten the crimos out of the Espro filters?
I'm thinking about geting one to use with the Tone 03 brewer because I like that it has a small top diameter. Not sure if you've used the Tone but do you think this could be the best fit?
Great video mate! Looking forward to getting mine at some point in the future! What did you say the brand of the circle filters are? Could quite make it out.
He said lab/lab grade filters. You can buy them on the Orea website.
Have you found any alternative to the orea filters ? They have a long wait time on them
@@adamharber5590 nope lol, alternative might be to get some trapezoid and their are methods online to make them flush against the walls
@@joelraivid5581 I have read in other comments that people have flattened kalita papers and that works
Hi Lance, I'd love to see a V60 recipe for Medium Dark roasts!
Waiting for mine but it’s shipped so it should be soon👍👍
Heck yeah! You'll enjoy it!
@@LanceHedrick printing the negotiator this weekend! I do have the frilly papers too though lol
When it comes to filters, those kalita filter can be negotiated if needed. They overlap on the sides but you won't have to go out and find some lab grade filters
For sure! Or you can get the sibarist flat papers!
Any leads on the size of lab grade filters be? :)
Hey Lance, you mention that you were folding trapezoidal filters before using the flat filters. Is it possible to explain how you were folding them?
I have a stack of about 100 trapezoid filters for my clever dripper that likely won’t get used anytime soon and would like to make use of them if possible. Thanks!
I haven't ever had flat-bottom drip coffee but have a go-to V60. How does this compare? I'm super interested.
Ordered 1 matt black after watching your clip. 😁
oh heck yeah! Youll love it!
Lance, Have you checked out the Cuptimo brewer yet? I would be interested to to see how you would approach brewing with it. To me it's kind of like a cross between a Clever Brewer and a AeroPress.
Sorta! I saw it in action at the Boston expo. Lewis from the UK showed me. He is selling them in England
Just in case, try not to use water over 60ºC to wet the filter with the negotiator on. Some of the 3d printed plastics start to deform at 60ºC.
I use tap
Hey Lance, do you still like the kono? Or do you like this better
Looks like such an simple coffee brewer to use, fast brewing, and easy clean up too!
It is!
I have an Orea V3 arriving today. Where is a good grind setting to start? (Commandante)
I actually like your longer videos more. This dripper needs more discussion. Most of the people who use this do not have a negotiator and use just regular Kalita papers. Coffee with April released a video about this dripper too and they did the opposite of you with using only kalita papers. And Patrik talked about how this dripper stalls near the end :O
I would love to watch an hour-long video of you talking about the possible ways of using orea, especially considering your energy while talking, it would be so much fun to watch haha
BTW, did you try using trapezoid filters? There is a trick with this kind of filters that do not require a negotiator.
Yes. I have done trapezoid, sibarist, kalita, fellow, and folding circle ones. I presented my favorite iteration. I do not like kalita filters in it at all.
I Didn't feel like presenting things I didn't like. Just showing how this was my favorite flat bottom.
This other ways of using it, I don't enjoy much.
@@LanceHedrick thank you for the response, I really appreciate that. Since this dripper is not cheap, I want to learn everything before purchasing it :)
Can you tell me if you liked the trapezoid or not, when you compare it to the method you showed in the video? And why?
Thank you again
I prefer the paper of the cafec trapezoid to the paper I got from horia but not enough to have to do origami daily to get it to fit snugly.
@@LanceHedrick thats great!
Hey Lance. What’s your favorite non plastic dripper?
Would it be possible to use a 8 cup chemex filter, or is it too small?
Just got mine in the mail today! I only have kalita 185 filters but super interested in a negotiator and some of those filters.
it works perfectly, kalita filters are actually circular when you flatten them, they just folded them into that ripple shape
@@henrytung9324 I took 25 of them and flattened them. Put them underneath 5 heavy text books for a couple days, pretty much flat. Works perfect.
I've been wondering if this would work flattening the fliers. Glad to hear it does as my orea and negotiator are in the post and I can't find the flat filters
Does anyone know where I can get the flat filters to use with the negotiator?
What was grind size did you use on the ode for this?
My chat with the filter: "Hey man how's it going family good, ya, yah, BOOM!
my daily conversation when negotiating.
Please review the Orea V4.
Great video. Found out about you from my friend Jools at Adventures In Coffee podcast from the UK, where you were an excellent guest star !
Im guessing your friend Horia is Greek. So please have him teach you the correct prononciation of the name Orea, « O ray uh » which means beautiful in Greek ! Love your tutorials. Sunscribed
Had I known the word was intended to be a modern Greek word, I would've asked. I actually am/was proficient in ancient Greek, though there have been cataclysmic changes in the languages since then. For instance, orea wasn't beautiful in any of my ancient texts I translated.
I also would've known had it been written in Greek lol
@@LanceHedrick Ancient Greek, that’s unique! I lived in Corfu 40 years ago and learned to speak some Greek, and when I went to his website it jumped out at me that why he named it ! Watched a bunch of your tutorials and although I’m love my syphon, i do a lot of pour overs in a Italian designer pour over pot I found at a flea market in Italy. Since I live in France, I find Melitta filters easily, but now I’m obsessed with all your unique bloom time recipes :). So that will keep me busy and buzzed, plus your beatbox technique was extra !!
Hi Lance, would you release a video recipe for this brewer?
hi Lance, great video, would you happen to have the diameter of the lab grade filter paper? also is your Orea the 155 or 185?
That's a 185, the 155 is tiny
The diameters of the papers are 185mm and 155mm 🤝 - Personally have not had luck with lab papers, as they tend to be too dense and pores too small (the ones I could find). In the video, Lance is using various coffee filters in flat circular form. One is actually a Chemex filter, which does work well if you cut it to size - it's thick, with a good flow rate. We sell an alternative too currently, in the right diameters, but the flat project is very much still a work in progress! Hope this helps!
thanks Orea! looking forward to the flat project!
April brewer also have a massive hole in the bottom. But if you brew it with a lot of agitation it will clog the F up 😅
Hi! Thanks for sharing! Is that one the small or the large v3? Thanks
Small!
Hi may i ask, what are the spiral ribs for in the v60?
Do 102 size trapezoidal filters fit snug in the Orea with the negotiator?
1.5 years later, any further recommendations for off the shelf filters and/or negotiated raw paper?
So to rinse this thing, does it always drip like crazy? Like, do you have to really make an effort to get the water out of all the holes?
Does the negotiator fit in a stagg X?
I could swear i have seen you cover the fellow stagg dripper but i cannot find the video, has it been removed?
Wouldn’t you be able to mimic that technique with just an Aeropress?
Or the smaller diameter and the holes can’t get you the same results !
Thanks for the video 🙏🏼
Debatable on how much difference it would make, but fitting 255 g of water in one pour into an aeropress is pushing it's capacity, right?
What lab filter papers are we buying from amazing squad?
Could you teach us how to origami a melitta style filter into flat bottom?
Can you do a video on the Tricolate brewer?
I have!
When I've tried to switch to faster brewers - Espro Bloom and Simplify - I wasn't able to produce a well-rounded brew. They were always dry and bitter, presumably from having to grind so fine. Is it just because both of those are TOO fast, whereas the Orea is faster than a Kalita but slower than the others?
The Orea is faster than anything. Faster than the Stagg X with a metal mesh on bottom too. To me it's too fast and I can't get good brews with small doses, always too astringent even if I grind coarse. A little "immersion" phase is needed IMO and Orea doesn't give you that, it's fast erosion all the time
Good stuff! Do you know if the negotiator fits the Stagg X? Have you tried the new Sibarist flat filters?
It does! And I have tried the new sibarist. They do not fit the Orea or the Stagg well
Thanks for your reply! I saw you’re testing Stéphane Ribes’ coffees. His current Kenyan on Stagg X is my daily driver these days, it is so good! Hope you try it.
I think I’ll need to get an Orea now :).
Hi, I designed a tool to fit the Stagg X specifically. I think that the heat retention of the X's dual walls really helps extraction, and I removed the need for a screen to keep the filter from clogging. I think it works really well!
@@daRock1212 your tool looks very promising! If it manages to solve the issue of the screen and makes putting the filter in place a one step process it would make the Stagg X a flawless brewer! I'll definitely give it a try.
@@daRock1212 Your variation of the negotiator seems very interesting - hope you get to try this in an Orea brewer one day too!
Would a disc of filter paper cut to the size of the bottom work as a filter instead of having to negotiate (like the tricolate)?
Probably, but then clean up is messier and there's risk of the disc dislodging or pulling into the large drainage holes, which results in slurry in your cup
You really drilled holes in the Kalita? What bit size?
You do know that the ceramic Kalita Wave doesnt have the same stalling issues of the metal one right? It flows about as fast as a V60 but with a rounder flavour profile.
I do know this. It is what the shop I work for uses (onyx coffee lab). Ceramic is awful though for thermal stability. I also hate frilly filters. Hard to get a filter to lay flat in it, other than the new expensive sibarist flats
The paper u used in this video. What is the size of it ?
Someone needs to make a 3-D printable "negotiator" for the Kalita. Why not just drill bigger holes in the Kalita?
Did you mention your grind size?
how about Hario Mugen?
I've only used conical brewers, but is the main difference VS a flat bottom is that the flat is capable of more body/sweetness and the conical can get more acidity/fruitiness?
That's essentially what was found at UC Davis in their massive study on the issue. It also aligns with what I would assume, but nice to have a study back it
@@LanceHedrick Great good to know! Is there a close 3rd for you after this Orea and the Stagg X for a flat bottom brewer?
I was just about to ask this! I am loving my clever dripper but I have always thought about someday getting a v60 and now I am wondering about v60 vs flat bottom
Lance in America with a Waitrose sandwich bag for some reason feels somewhat strange 😂
Any chance the negotiator would work on the stagg x?
...Ordered the orea, negotiator and flat filters anyway through 🤷♂️
Did you get the flat filters from orea? I'm looking for an alternative to the orea ones as they have a long wait time
@@adamharber5590sorry just saw this.
ya I got the flat filters from orea. The orea, filters and negotiator all came in today. Really like it.
During the wait, I also got a a negotiator type thing and a base 3D printed for the stagg x and have using kalita wave filters with that...just smashing the filter into the wall with that 3d printed tool. Also drilled bigger holes in the stagg. Works great. Very similar thing as what you get with the orea and its tools after hacking the stagg x.
why don't you like the version 2 Orea? just because of the lower thermal stability or some other reason? bc other than the material, they're exactly the same, ya? i'd be willing to sacrifice some thermals for the superior look and feel (my opinion of course) of the aluminum version if all else remains equal
also couldn't you just use the negotiator with a kalita filter?
Bought the brewer and the negotiator. where can you find this size round filter online please?
the filter is also on the orea website.
@@JMcClure81 4-8 weeks for delivery. Are there any other sources for a flat filter that will work?
@@blutcherama Look at Orea's Instagram. He has some videos of him using different filters for the V3.
How does it compare to the tricolate?
Well, it still has some partial bypass, so it is still not in the same category as tricolate. I kind of view brewers in three broad categories: conical, flat, and no bypass.
How do you find this compared to the Kono?
Apples and Oranges. One is conical and one flat. I love the Kono and probably use it more often.
@@LanceHedrick I am interested in more of this. I use Kono. What types of coffees would you use in Kono, what for Orea?
Are you paid to promote Orea brewer or hired to work for the company ? Which one ?
You seem pretty confident that there's significantly more bypass with kalita filters. Have you measured it? If you measured the tds with the different filters and otherwise identical brews then you'd know for sure to what extent the bypass is worse with kalita filters.
