    I watched a master carpenter cover the last end cap nails with tar, then rubbed two colored pieces of a shingle together to get a small pile of colored particles, then sprinkled them over the tar-covered nails and pressed them in.... totally blends in with the cap -- you never see the nails. I thought that was soooo cool! :)

      The only problem with this(not saying it's bad) is over time you have points where water can eventually seep in. If u were to dip or cover the nails in caulk or sealant then do the tar and color match then most definitely a good idea but I'd say it be a bit time consuming. We know everyone is in a hurry to get the roof done

We figured out how to cut the shingles and they went on like a gem. Thanks for sharing your know how - I don’t think my husband and I would have been able to figure it out. I have been on google and youtube for an hour trying to see if i am supposed to cut off the top of my shingles or just lap it over to the other side and now i finally have my answer! With your help, my shed roof is looking pretty damn good and im confident it will hold.. i used to do siding and windows but never really did any roofing so your videos really helped!

    • @snowsurfr
      @snowsurfr Před 2 lety +3

      @@gmd1417 Since storms rotate counterclockwise in the northern hemisphere and clockwise in the Southern Hemisphere, if you’re in the US, the wet part of a storm will usually come from the SW blowing toward the NE. However if you have monsoon weather (thunderstorms and flash floods) during the summer, that will be something to consider. Also if you’re on a hill or mountain that could have some local effects. I suppose what it all comes down to is which rain storms have the most wind in your area; winter or summer.

    Nice tip on cutting the 1st & 2nd to last ridge shingles as starter shingles... It might also be a good idea to put a bit of a tar strip under the 1st top ridge shingle & final ridge shingle to help the 2 tar strips bond better. That's how Owning Corning starter & 1st row of shingles mate/lock up for the strongest bond.

      Me too. I'm actually sitting on top of my shed right now wondering what to do with the Ridge capping. Very handy to see what the pros do. QUESTION: What kind of hooked knife are you using? I've been using one of the Olfa extendable break-off blade knives, but my shingle slicing isn't nearly as easy as you make it look. Of course, that's probably all know-how on account of you being in the trade, and I'll just have to suck it up. But if the kind of knife being used helps much, please do tell.
      Thanks. Much appreciated! Oh, almost forgot: is the Lake Street Tavern still a place to go? Back in the 80's, it was a decent place for a pint or three?

    • @Average_Roofer
      @Average_Roofer  Před 3 lety

      @@eejuice the snap off blades are flexible and that would be the reason you are struggling. We use primeline or Stanley hook titanium hook blade that fit in most standard knifes. Approx $5 per pack of 5. One blade should lay 1 full roof unless it’s cold then they do tend to break more often
