How to get a Job in IT with no Experience (2020 - Information Technology):
STEP 1: Develop a technical knowledge base. Studying the exam objectives from CompTIA's A+ will help you with this. I would recommend getting a cheap, refurbished computer from Amazon that you can practice on during this step.
STEP 2: Get an entry-level certification. This is much easier than it sounds. Certifications serve as an HR filter and are very helpful in obtaining your first job. I would recommend getting the CompTIA A+ certification. Alternatively, you can get Network+, Security+, or ITIL.
STEP 3: Experience - Make your own. Pick a topic in IT that you find interesting and do a bit of a deep-dive into learning it. After you have built your lab, or played with the technology enough, create some kind of simply blog post or CZcams video teaching others about it. You can use your publication and lab work on your resume as Experience!
STEP 4: Resume - High quality and succinct. Generally, you want your resume to be as easy to read and as succinct as possible. A lot can be said about this, but take a look at the sample resume linked below.
STEP 5: Application Process. Fill out your LinkedIn profile COMPLETELY, and fill out profiles on all of the popular job hunting sites (Indeed, Glassdoor, Monster, etc). After this, start searching for jobs with keywords such as (CompTIA A+, Helpdesk, support, technician, etc). Apply to as many jobs as you can. If you live in a remote or rural area, strongly consider relocating just to get that first bit of experience. It may be worth it in the end. I have personally relocated to Japan and Hawaii in my career. It's not that bad, and can be a great experience.
STEP 6: Interview Preparation. Gather as many practice interview questions as you can, not necessarily to "learn" the answers, but to practice articulating your responses. See the link below for some sample interview questions. This will greatly help you, come time to do the actual interview. Because you've practiced saying what you want to say and how to say it, it's one less thing to think about during your interview and you will end up being much more relaxed.
Summary: The more of these steps you implement, and the better you implement them, the greater the chance you have getting at hired somewhere and getting the job you want!

New subscriber. Thanks for your information. I like how you break it down into steps. It feels more approachable. The resume outline is great. Thanks again!
Thank you so much for your channel! I really want to get into tech, not sure what niche I want to do. I spent the last year learning programming but I also enjoy a lot of other things. I work as a legal secretary but even a lot of people there come to me with I.T. support type questions on a weekly basis so it's making me want to learn more about I.T. since I want to be offer better assistance to people so maybe I should look more into the I.T. route. đ

Thanks for info !! Awesome channel đ
Thanks so much, really appreciate that! And no prob of course ^^
I have always been into tech my whole life and wanted to get into the field in some way. Even in my b.s. IT degree they don't give a good path for what I should be doing to get a job. However this structured path you have in the video is amazing and to the point! You definitely deserve more attention in the CZcams space.
Thanks so much, that really means a lot. I'm glad you like the content. There is another video that MIGHT be useful for you, check it out whenever you get time :p

Thank you for your awesome video, it really helped me to know where to go, and how to do that.
No problem! Thanks so much for watching!!
Hey Josh! Having someone like you as a mentor will be great.
Thanks for these. Have been interested for a while. I want to or at least I think I want to do security as well. Any recommendations for a first job in IT? Should it be something like a help desk position or something more closely related to security? Something thatâs âmoreâ technical? Thanks.
Thank you!
Iâm in WA State also! Currently interviewing for an IT help desk position in Olympia. Appreciate your knowledge :)
Hey Jen! Glad to see another Washington person haha. Best of luck with your interviews, I hope you get em!
Hi Josh
Thanks a lot for boosting the energy to look for the IT jobs in systematic way
I am glad that I found your channel and subscribed.
Thanks so much for subbing, I really appreciate it! And no problem đđđđ I'm all about systematic methods haha. GL with the job hunt.
Love your videos Josh! I just completed both A+ exams and now I'm A+ certified! So, I am looking building a good resume and creating a Linkedin profile. This is very helpful thank you!
Super!! Congrats on fishing those exams, that's no joke. GL!!
hi , where can i take the A+ exam? Online it says its hundreds of dollars, idk if this is right i googled for a while but im a bit confused what did you do?
super video and thanks for presenting it. I wish you good luck.
Thanks Josh
Josh, thank you so much for all of the videos you put out on helping others with starting a career in IT! They are SO helpful (as someone who is a total newbie haha)
Big thanks
Youre so so likeable. Thanks for this detailed video.
Sweet, i was actually looking for a video about this. I am trying to find a job in IT or programming. But i will need to do some extra school years if i do want it.
Dope! WGU offers Software Dev and BS in CompSCI. I'm actually working on the math for the CompSCI degree right now!
This video was super helpful! I'm currently getting into the steps of going back to school at WGU and I feel like IT management would be a great fit. I want to work for a music tech or publishing like Complex and work as a Business Analyst or Web Development.
That is very cool, and good for you! Best of luck with WGU. It helps to prep as much as you can before you start. Consider transferring in some certs or other classes from study[.]com (just an option). Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment :)
my dawg i literally clapped out loud in my room from how succinct and actually useful the information that was presented in this video you are a fucking legend!
Thanks alot for this vid started WGU this month. I worked in help desk for 2 years and I'm looking get my degree thanks for this video man.
Hey, no problem! Good luck with your degree. Out of curiosity, which program did you go with?

Nice, same here! Good luck with it đđ
Your the man josh.
Haha, thanks so much. Appreciate you watching!
Definitely agree with the whole small town thing I live in a country town with a population of 27,000 So even smaller than Walla Walla lol and yes I can attest that it is very hard to find jobs here for every occupation Iâm definitely game for moving anywhere especially Seattle Iâve always wanted to go there
Highly recommend moving for work! Haha! But donât move INTO Seattle itself, it sucks in there. Maybe Lynnwood, Shoreline, Everett, Bellevue, Kirkland, Redmond, Bothell, or Edmonds đ. Sounds exciting though!

I'm thrilled with your voice Josh. Is it natural, trained, or the gadgets? I really want a voice like that to get started as a vlogger. Great insight.
Haha thanks for the compliment. It's all natural, I just tried to get halfway decent equipment for my audio (it's in the description). I also use noise gate and audio compression filters to keep the sound evened out, but my voice is just me talking normally đ. Thanks again
Just wanted to come back and say thank you. I used this method to land a System Administrator position with no professional IT experience and just a few certs. Thank you so much for this!
No problem! Thanks for taking the time to come back and share your success story!!
What certs did you have??
@@ayonahmed965 CCNA and Security+. Even if you don't have those certs be sure to put that they're currently in progress on your resume so that more employers can find your resume. Hope this helps.
@@Eze_Cloud Great advice Oga. Thanks
@@Eze_Cloud Is CCNA and Security+ dependent on each other (in lack of better phrase) meaning you have to learn both to get a job? Also, this might sound dumb because I'm completely new to this but does any of them require coding?
Amazing video. I am trying to finish up my a+ currently. I just need the 1002 exam. I graduated with a BA in computer science back in 2003. I changed career paths and went to cooking school and worked in the hotel industry the past 17 years until the pandemic hit. This motivated me to get back into IT because my restaurant in the hotel closed. I was just wondering what information I can get how to make a blog for my resume. What resources are on the internet.
Thanks
Hey! You can use a free site like medium to publish your blog too. I'm kinda weak in this area, but there are probably some really good CZcams resources to help with SEO and other sites as well. Best of luck trying to get back in. You have that nice CS degree too đ
Yup I'm looking to do IT TOO
Hello josh thank you so much for this wonderful video , I want to get into cyber security and I watched your video about cracking into cyber security and It was very useful but my question is , what to do if your country doesnât have any company that hires pentesters, is there any place you know that hires pentesters or sponsors work visa so I can move somewhere ?
I have a bachelor's in MIS and I'm still looking for work. I just started a job today and my goal is to save up and take a comptia a+ exam. From what I hear it is supposed to give me an overall understanding of IT and serves a good way to decide whether I want to study for cybersecurity. So I'm gonna save money for this. I finished school in 2020, during covid, so I'm pumped about getting the ball rolling again. Wish me luck! đŻđđŒ
If you have a degree and a job, why would you take the A+? Why not just do a quick review and jump on the CCNA?
I am getting back into IT after 15 years being out of it. I still have my A+ cert and I got it in 1999. It is still valid :)
Thanks! I'm just starting IT as I EAS from the Marines... What's a better combo 1) CCNA W/ CCNP Or 2) CEH W/CySA+ Or 3) CySA W/ Splunk? The goal is to work from home and having a little trouble determining which certs I should do?
Thank you for making this video! I spent hours and days wondering how can I obtain a job in Information Technology without experience but experience only comes from jobs.
This was very helpful, I'm retiring from the Air Force in 2 years and wanted to get into the IT field. I'm going to apply these steps in hopes of landing a job. Thanks brother.
Glad it was useful! I have a kind of more updated, part 2 of this video I just released that goes into a bit more depth. Check em out if you get time :) czcams.com/video/OHdFmQvpsvA/video.html

NP! Thanks for watching! I'm making a whole, nice course based off this video. Top secret tho, nobody knows about it loool
@@JoshMadakor that's dope, I definitely want to check that out if possible. I really appreciate you for uploading all of this valuable info. This is video is exactly what I was looking for.
Iâm so glad Iâm coming across this video. I had a Tier I help desk job interview yesterday and totally bombed it on the technical questions even though I have a great amount of experience from being in the Navy just shy of 9yrs but as a computer operator not an actual IT. Needless to say I didnât get the job, but I was just about to ask my job recruiter what I could do to build my basic IT experience when I saw this video on my CZcams Home Screen and itâs basically answered my questions. Thank you for this video đđœ.
Im super glad the video was useful! Sorry about the interview, but at least you got some decent interview practice in :). You'll get it eventually for sure! The sample interview questions might help too (in the description). Best of luck! Excited for you!
@@JoshMadakor Thank you đđœ
Hey Josh, I love your videos and appreciate you taking time to share this valuable info. I'm looking to transition into IT and decided to complete the Google IT Support Professional certification. I enjoyed using Linux over Windows in every lab scenario, with that in mind, what do you suggest I focus on to become knowledgeable enough to land a job? Are there entry level individuals that only use Linux in IT? Or do I still need to learn to use Windows/Powershell? I'm trying to narrow down an area of expertise just like your wife did with networking.
I would say you need to be proficient using both Windows and Linux. The Google IT Support Professional Certificate and the CompTIA A+ cover both Windows and Linux in-depth because you will encounter BOTH in an IT support environment.
Yoooo Josh youâre wife is insane đđđ you made a good choice being with her âcompleted the CCNA firstâ Iâm sure not very many people would expect that; I donât even know her and Iâm proud! I just completed the CCNA 08/09
Thank you! Very informative video. However, what you say at around 16:00 about a small town (btw 34k people is not small at all where Iâm from lol) makes me feel hopelessâŠthe biggest town within a 2-hour radius is 10k people. Most of these small towns are 4K or less.đ

Top quality tips, Thank you. I'm a current IT student with 5 certifications. Trying to get a job now.
Dang 5 certs, you are good to go. Make sure to check all your other bases (interview practice, physical presentation, job search radius, etc). Good luck! Getting that initial experience is very very important, so even if the salary is slightly lower, so keep that in mind! Good luck :)
As someone whoâs trying to get a job as a data analyst- should I only keep the highly relevant data analyst certs on my resume? (I have 4 that are relevant)
Or should I also include my google project management & google marketing / E-commerce cert?
This video is very helpful now I have a road map
I believed in one of your videos you mentioned being in contact with recruits to get contracts. If you've made a video on this can someone direct me to it, and if not. I would love it if you elaborated on the process of finding a good recruiter... or I guess getting found by a good recruiter. I'm not too familiar with this process and have only gotten jobs directly from the company.
I haven't made a video on this specifically, but I can add it to the list of videos to create :)
Iv been searching your videos. I would love some comments on remote or a video on remote working. For example: Someone like me who is very family oriented and recently forced to change careers. Is it likely to be able to land remote work being new to this industry? Do you always have to go into work or are there companies that only work remotely? Also, Iv watched your video on a day in the life. There are a lot of videos online but no one ever mentions time. How may hours do you normally work a day? Is it super stressful? Please make a video for the average working person switching career and what to expect..... Thank you. I love your videos and you are by far the best out here. Keep them coming
Hey, thanks so much for watching! I'll try to answer in-line:
_Is it likely to be able to land remote work being new to this industry?_
I know one thing for sure, it's much more likely now than it was 4 years ago. As long as your Resume/Portfolio is looking good and you apply consistently, your chance aren't bad.
_How may hours do you normally work a day? Is it super stressful?_
My job is a really strange job. It's a mixture of Cloud and Software Engineering. I honestly do about 4 hours of "labor" per day on this job and the stress is like a 2/10, maybe even 1/10. You will run into this a lot with Software Engineering at large companies that aren't Amazon, lol.. My Tech jobs were pretty similar, as long as you aren't doing consulting.
Thank you so much for the kind words. I will definitely make a video on this. I added your comment and name to my list. I'm going to get a helper to help me with editing so I can put out more content, but I'm doing a lot of stuff right now so it's pretty hard haha. But yeah, seriously thank you :)
If we go through professor Messers part one and part two, will that help us pass the CompTiA A+ certification? Also where can we take the CompTiA A+ certification?
thanks man I just beat cancer and after treatment I lost my job and was thrust into this god awful job market these tips will def help on the way

How'd it go?
Update: I now have my A+ Net+ Sec+ and over 1.5 years experience in IT, and Josh also inspired me to start my own small YT channel! (Vincent Humble)
Thanks for everything Josh, and well wishes to others out there who are on a similar journey!
Hi Josh. I'm new to IT and I see that the A+ exam will be retired next month. Any tips on what to do for the new exam coming up? Will it be modified? If not, can I still use the current resources you provided to study for the new exam? Thank you for the helpful video.
Hey, I just looked and I didn't see it has a retirement date. If it gets retired, 100% a new A+ will be created with updated curriculum. A+ is like, _THE_ main entry-level IT cert so they won't remove it completely :P. Most of the old resources will probably still be applicable--there is generally a decent amount of overlap. Hope this helps!
Am about to start a course course at a college soon. I want to start with comptia a+ however, there's a bundle course where you can do comptia n+ and cisco routing and switching all at once. My question is do you think it's advisable to study them all at once or is it too much?
Would you recommend ccna over the network plus
Yup I just bought the study guide for comptia A+
Hi Josh, in how many weeks can I complete the Comp TI certification. ?
Lol.@ "my active directory lab is pretty bad ....don't look at itđ " .....LOVE THE TRANSPARENCYđ
What platform would you recommend to start a blog on? written one that is
Which is a better combo certification to work from home in IT? 1)CEH W/Splunk 2)CCNA W/CCNP or 3) CySA+ W/CEH
